    EXPLANATION: Billy Beane felt like he failed in his life to achieve a legacy with his proffessional career & himself. That's why he never sat inside the stafium to watch the team play, he felt like a bad omen. What he really "failed" to see was how special he was, he hit a homerun in his life, with his daughter, baseball etc. But he just never seen it.

    • @Saboo27
      @Saboo27 4 ปีที่แล้ว +101

      I like your explanation but I'm pretty sure it's a little more simple and he is just saying it is a metaphor for the season that had just ended (without winning the world series). Even though they didn't win it all like he wanted, he accomplished something great.
      Of course this is just my opinion but this is how I interpreted it.

      @@Saboo27 The impact was greater than winning a World Series. They built a post season team for a fraction of the price that other teams did. What they did couldn't be ignored. It would change how every other team functioned.

      IIRC, this was supposed to go while he was deliberating the Red Sox offer. He's stuck his nose out to consider a better and brighter opportunity in a storied franchise with legit ability to make a world series winning team... and he was shuffling away from it. And this was the counter argument - he just hit a homerun, but he was too terrified to take the next step and scrambling back to the comfort of first base.

      It fails to mention that the team had Miguel Tejada winning the MVP and Barry ZIto winning the Cy Young Award. The only time that either player would achieve either of these. The 1 through 3 starting pitchers on that A's team was one of the best in baseball and that wasn't mentioned. Eric Chavez was one of the best third basemen in baseball: not mentioned. Carlos Pena was trash that season and they talk him up.
      The premise of the movie was that they had calculated how many more runs they needed that season, and they were trying to find those runs very cheaply. Tejada's, Zito's, and Hudson's production went up drastically. Players already on the roster over achieving Jonah Hill's initial calculation played a larger role than the movie gave credit.

    • @pats4lifebb
      @pats4lifebb 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think you're not really thinking about this wrong. The "initial calculation" is just an oversimplified metaphor used to explain the role their number based approach played in their success. And it's not like this is the only example they use. Remember, this movie (like any movie nowadays) is playing to the LCD, this isn't exactly meant for hardcore sports fans.
      And sure, IRL, luck did play a part in their success, but it's not like thats the only good season they had, and multiple factors played into their success that season, and into the future.

I had never hit a HR before so I wasn’t expecting it. I wouldn’t leave the base because I thought he had the ball and would tag me out. Ump came over and said “Home Run kid”. I went on to hit 20 more home runs in high school. Never got over that first one though. Total surprise. 😂

    I love this metaphor: going for the second base is winning the league. The A’s didn’t win at this first attempt, just as Jeremy stumbles and falls at his. Billy is crushed by that. But getting that team together with no more than scraps, giving abandoned players a chance, and winning 20 games in a row (making them legendary), that’s the home-run. This is what Peter tries show him: he already hit the home run, even though he didn’t make it to second base in one go.

This one time, he was going to go for it, he's going to go for second, he tries, falls down, is completely ashamed and struggles to get back to first. The most commonly accepted list is the UN member states list which is 193 recognized nations. However, it is worth noting that FIFA recognizes 211 "national association" members. And not all "national associations" are part of FIFA (though very nearly). I doubt the final total is 240, but I'd be cautious about making too definitive of a declaration.

    This scene finally tells us about Sorkin's idealistic personal philosophy and the real conclusion of Billy's story... that statistics/math/numbers aren't deterministic nor important. That life can be unpredictable, illogical, and romantic, and that's great. Despite an entire film so far being about mathematicians proving stubborn scouts wrong, Sorkin still believes that some decisions aren't rational or mathematically sound and those moments are more important. Beane is going to follow his heart rather than the voices of others and the voices of experts (who would tell him to chase the money and prestige), and he turns down the position with the Red Sox. He finally accepts that it's okay to be what objectively may be seen as a "loser" move (as his daughter sings at the end). Beautiful.

    • @mobiz711
      @mobiz711 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Well, I think like all great writing it can be interpreted in more than one way. I think on it's most basic level, Jonah Hill is telling Pitt's Bean that even though he doesn't realize it, he hit a home run. That despite not getting to the World Series, metaphorically he still hit a home run because of the amount of success they had using saber metrics to manage their team.

      @@mobiz711 But... isn't that the only possible interpretation of this? It's literally the intended meaning and the only way this scene makes sense in the context of the movie. That's the metaphor - that it looked and felt like a loss, but was actually a bigger win than they knew. They couldn't win the championship, but what they did changed the entire game. It's beautiful because it juxtaposes the movie's main story about logic and facts overriding intuition. That also is the intended meaning, and why it's such an effective scene.
      Moneyball works, but you still can never discount unexpected brilliance and heroism against the apparent script. That's why you can't "not be romantic about baseball" - or all of life (which is the REAL metaphor here, and the ultimate subtext of the movie). That's why the scene moves you. It's offering enormous encouragement and hope.

      Ken Williamson the other way to look at it is that brown the player depicted was one of the players Beane insisted on drafting over the strenuous objections of his scouting team. And this scene in seeming to emphasize hope actually capture the myopia at the heart of moneyball. This kid clearly can’t play baseball at the mlb level precisely for the reasons the scouts identified. He “got on base” but so what- the emphasis on getting on base only works when you are dealing with a pool of players that have demonstrated the ability to do all the things required of a mlb baseball player. It doesnt really help you analyze amateur players. A player that can’t run to second is useless as a MLB player no matter how much he gets on base.

It is one of the best movies i have seen about sport. And ... sport is great metaphor of life. There are so much people that are not given credit because they have some flaws - and often we don't realize how much they are important in our lives, till its too late. This is a hidden truth, that u can find from watching this over and over... and how great is that wisdom on the way u treat people - it made me look on many things from a very different angle. So what does he do makes his peace with penny pinching owners in the best way possible by becoming an equity partner in the A’s.
      Ironically the only way to maintain a competitive advantage as a baseball team is in scouting and drafting players- the exact expertise Beane dismisses.

    • @hypetrained

      @@dannytallmadge2161 the Oakland A's of 2020 have an extremely robust amateur and professional scouting department. Scott Hatteberg is actually a scout for the A's now. Grady Fuson is back, with Kubota (mr. t ball) at the helm. Paul DePodesta (real life Peter Brand) actually says in quite a lot of interviews that the A's of this era relied heavily on scouting to make sure data was correct - a scout's expertise would filter through the noise - look not simply at the numbers, but HOW they were achieving those numbers. Look at Laureano and Matt Chapman for instance. They were both incredibly talented players passed on by other organizations. The data found these players, and the scouts confirmed that they were the real deal, or vice versa. In reality, scouting and data had always gone hand and hand in the Oakland A's front office.

Players are ENCOURAGED to swing for the fences regardless of the situation. Bottom of the 9th inning, game tied runner on third with 1 out? 2 strikes? Don't you dare shorten up your swing just to hit a sacrifice fly. Swing for that two run home run so your meaningless run can score too! Sure, you will strike out more than half the time, but go for that home run! After all, you've hit 3 all year! That makes you a power hitter! Don't you see that the other team has the shift on? And if you do, don't you DARE bunt against the shift for the easy game winning hit. You MUST go for the home run. Modern analytics says so! Ratings be damned! Fans LOVE to see strikeouts!"

    I could not care less about baseball, but this is honestly one of my favourite movies ever. I watch it a few times a year, but since I have watched some baseball and funny enough I dont mind it so much

    I don't know why but the movie made me emotional. I never watched baseball, we don't get it on our TV stations that often. Maybe a game here and there, but it's uncommon. But this movie struck a cord with me. The essence of sports.
