For those interested, it's not just my hunch that says that Urban Fantasy is a more female-author genre than Epic Fantasy! Here's the numbers from Tor in 2013: web.archive.org/web/20150430072612/www.torbooks.co.uk/blog/2013/07/10/sexism-in-genre-publishing-a-publishers-perspective

    My favorite Urban Fantasies are
    1) Ann Bishop's The Others series.
    2) Jim Butcher
    3) The Iron Druid Chronicles series
    4) Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake series
5)Patricia Briggs any of her series

Great list of recommendations. Lots of interesting future reads. I love Rivers of London and I'll have to move Jacka up the tbr. His Alex Verus series is another good urban fantasy.

Ohhh interesting that you recommended Legendborn for Xanthous Orange (that's me!) because all the other reviews I'd seen had given me the idea it was more character focused and not so much for me...

I would say it's probably got some character focus, but it also has some intense worldbuilding and a few magical trials to keep the plot going

One of the reasons for the popularity of the Dresden Files books, apart from longevity, may be the TV series that was based on them.

But the TV series is so bad haha

One author in this space that I would strongly recommend is Nina Kiriki Hoffman, especially her Chapel Hollow (3), LaZelle Family (2), and Magic Next Door (2) books.
