SURABAYA, INDONESIA: Welcome to Surabaya, the second biggest city in Indonesia, and an Indonesian street food paradise. Get ready for an ultimate and unforgettable street food tour!
Huge thank you to my friends:
Fammy Wijaya: / surabayafoodies
Budi Tarjo: / indonesiadiscoverer (He offers incredible tours in Indonesia)
Here’s all the Indonesian food we ate today:
Pecel Kriuk Dan Rawon Bu Lili (maps.app.goo.gl/bHCCisFsJSrJY...) - If there’s one single dish that represents Surabaya, it would have to be rawon, an Indonesian beef soup with black keluak nut. It’s so delcious and has been rated as one of the best soups in the world. We also tried another classic breakfast dish called nasi pecel - rice, vegetables, and peanut sauce.
Lontong Balap Mbah Ato (maps.app.goo.gl/D45YunL8ziQMD...) - Next up we went to an amazing stall to eat Lontong Balap - compressed rice, bean sprouts, peanut sauce, sweet soy sauce.
Soto Ambengan Pak Sadi (maps.app.goo.gl/5fSDXArvuh8e5...) - This is one of those heritage institution restaurants that’s famous for serving Soto Ayam, Indonesian chicken soup. I loved all the herbs in the broth and the toppings.
Sate Klopo Ondomohen Bu Asih (maps.app.goo.gl/qcrcqJhKLJqy1...) - There are many variations of sate in Indonesia and one of the unique versions in Surabaya is Sate Klopo - sate with shredded coconut.
Rujak Cingur dan Sop Buntut Genteng Durasim (maps.app.goo.gl/wREsCaczhjUgL...) - Another dish Surabaya is famous for is called Rujak Cingur, a very unique combination of fruits and vegetables with cow nose. The greatest thing about the salad is the peanut sauce with shrimp pate and green mango.
Bebek Goreng Papin (maps.app.goo.gl/TMB8SSbzrX6mn...) - You can’t go to Surabaya without trying their local “bebek goreng” deep fried duck - I’m going to just go ahead and say that it’s the best fried duck on earth. This legendary Indonesian street food stall makes it like no other - so juicy and moist on the inside and so crispy on the outside, with insane amounts of flavor.
Tahu Campur Cak Sadak (maps.app.goo.gl/PJuY3MktXKG74...) - Finally another unique dish to Surabaya is a mix of tofu called Tahu Campur - Mix of tofu with vegetables, noodles, and beef tendon soup.
What a day and what an incredible Indonesian street food tour in Surabaya!

I'm Malaysian but am so in awe of Indonesian cuisine coz its an extremely diverse cuisine in all aspects like the very local ingredients used, the immense ammount of endemic knowledge involved, the long precolonial history and philophosy of even the most humble-looking street foods, the ever-so creative continuous food invention and innovation... among others
Not forgetting the exquisite flavors of the foods themselves and the sheer pride of the locals for their cuisine.
as if you are praising Indonesia but you are also claiming it 🇲🇾💩🤡
Thank you.

As a Surabayan living in NYC, I’ve been waiting for a video of the street food through the perspective of a foreigner. Its amazing how you describe the food as complex, not just in the flavors but also in the texture, because that is what Surabaya food is mainly about. Food in Surabaya is generally umami driven, with the hint of sweetness. We use a lot of petis in our food. You can even eat fried tofu with petis, fried garlic and chillies. Thank you for coming to this sweet hometown of mine, Mark Wiens! Watching this video reminds me of home. Enjoy Indonesia!
so come and get some, in here, city of hero, surabayan cuisine is the most tastefull food, don't cha😁
Lah ngopo panjenengan nang NYC? Kerjo ta?
Surabayan living in Japan 🙋🏻♀️ I tortured myself by following a lot of Surabaya local food bloggers 🤣 . That Rujak Cingur and fried duck are my family’s favorite for so long.

I'm from the UK but live in central Java. Had to come back to the UK this winter but I'm heading back to Indonesia next week. Bebek goreng with sambal ijo will be one of the first things I eat when I get back.
it's not too healthy though
Literally my mouth is watering seeing you guys eating. Surabaya is indeed one of the best places in Indonesia for food. Thanks for coming back Mark.
I am very proud to be able to accompany Mark to try street food in Surabaya, thank you for coming and introducing Surabaya food to the world

Thank you for showing Khun Mark and his family/crew around, ko! No doubt that you know the best places in Surabaya! Biar dunia tau makanan Surabaya bukan cuma toge campur kuah kacang doang 😅 Semoga nggak tersinggung, and thanks again for being a good guide to our guests! 🍻
Good job mas Budi! Matur nuwun!
Kurasi makanan sampeyan uedhian Mas, jempol empat!
My mother spent some time in Surubaya, when she was a young girl, and later in Singapore, where our family lived, she always reminisced about this wonderful time for her and her family, and about the glorious flavor of this dish she so much wanted to have again, called petchil. Although she never did get the chance to, I want to thank you Mark, for giving me some insight into what she was describing and how tasty it was to her. I love it when you do Asian countries!
It is called Pecel. Nasi Pecel is usually boiled vegetables with peanut sauce which is a common dish in East Java. The other pecel is called Pecel Ayam/Lele which is totally different to Nasi Pecel. It has plain rice/aromatic rice (Nasi Uduk) with chicken or fish, sambal, and lalapan (fresh veggies). Both of them exist in Surabaya :)
Thank you very much for sharing, appreciate your support!
i think its pecel
Thank you guys for correcting me on the spelling. My Malay/Indonesian spelling was before “c” was pronounced as “ch”. Sorry about that. At any rate Mark has given me a wonderful insight as to what it is and how it tastes. Since I have a knowledge and experience of Indonesian and Malay food and cook those well, I can almost taste it! Thanks everybody!!
Hopefully you can collaborate with Indonesian food bloggers like Nex Carlos and hobby makan
My gosh mark! Now, I need to go to Indonesia oneday. The food? Looks delicious. A smorgasbord of aromas and unique cuisine. And Mark, thank you for describing each food you taste with their textures, smells, etc. 👍
You must try food in Indonesia rich delicious food
I want to taste food Indonesian I am from Cambodia
I loveee marks food vlogs like this!!! He never ever complains about being full or makes any rude comments about the food like so many other food vloggers do when being shown around like this.
Mark always do alot of homework & research before he visit the country. So that he will get some basic knowledge of food & people, plus some geographical story too.
He travel from big city, to small town & even rural area. From one place to another just to try the food uniqueness.
Moreover he respect all type of people, regardless of races & culture
Mark Wein you are fantastic. Good job. 👍👏

Great to have you roaming through Indonesia again, Mark! It's a thrill for expats like myself to see our homeland's culinary adventures through your lens. Dive into the bold, zesty essence of Indonesian food and enjoy every bite for us!
Thank you very much!
Mark, next destination go to Manado, North Sulawesi. So many delicious food and culinary in there. Beautiful place to go to! You won’t regret it ❤
The thing with Indonesian food is that they are extremely generous with sauce like they drown it which I absolutely LOVE literally love drowning my foods in sauce and some people say it ruins it and I get what you mean but for me it makes it 10 times better. Also they love spicy food obviously and I love spicy food I eat literally everything spicy so yeah Indonesia is definitely a priority country to visit when I get a chance in life 👍
Considering how much Americans love peanut sauce, I think we should have more Indonesian restaurants
You totally should have more Indonesian restaurants over there, but I promise you peanut sauce is not all there is to our cuisine 😂
@@KilanEatsandDrinks for sure!
But i see alot of people allergic to peanut in the US

Mark, Surabaya is famous with its delicious food! there are lot of places selling fried duck, but for sure you need to cross to Madura island, try Bebek songkem (spicy steamed duck), Soto Madura (beef soup) and Bebek Sinjay in Bangkalan city Madura island. visit the Arabic square in Surabaya, you will see lottttt of street food from all over East Java! I used to live in Surabaya for 14 years and still in love with this city!

As indonesian, i was mixed ethnicity, from sundanesse, east javanesse ( madiun and madura ) , and what made me so happy are, culinery from them are one of the best culinery, tho i love cuilinery from other etnicity or provinces. If i got a husband like him who love to eat and love to go to find the good one, i will be so happy. Come to indonesian, asked the local for the recomendation street food stall or restaurant. Mostly, indonesian people loves to help, tho you have language barrier, they will try harder to help you. We have 38 provinces here, 300 etnicity grouo, 1340 tribes, try the diversity in culinery, and the nature. Now i am hungry.
Thankyou Mark for showing Indonesian cuisine to the world through your channel..
Fried duck with oily sambal...perfect combination..im glad Indonesian cuisine have more recognition now..it was underpromoted 10 or 20 years ago..have a great culinary journey in Indonesia,Mark..
After Seoul, now Surabaya. Welcome back to Indonesia, Mark! The land of sambal! Enjoy the food! 😁
really enjoyed the variety of foods and the range of flavors in this video. Mas Budi's humility in showing Mark around Surabaya's food scene was great, giving Mark the freedom to explore the tastes on his own, without imposing his own preferences, which I found enjoyable. The Soto experience was a bit underwhelming, with the choice of the place and with tasting a personalized version instead of the standard offering. Anyway, the choice to visit Bebek Papin was excellent! although I believe that ANY fried duck dish in Surabaya would be a delight!
Lots Indonesian miss u ....
5 year long time mark
Im still remember in ur Indonesia journey with 200k subs
We appreciate Mark's dedication and hard work. He's truly one of the best.

As an Indonesian, I've the privilege to try Thai Food, Malaysian Food, Singaporean Food, Filipinos Food, Vietnamese Food, and even Laotian Food..
And i have to say, South East Asian Food is just the best.. Exploding flavour in every cuisine, combine by the best of western and eastern culinary.
It is up there with French, Italian, and Latin American food.
Nah, Southeast Asian cuisines is a rank higher than any Western cuisines.
Only Middle Eastern, Africans, South Asians, and Chinese cuisines deserves to be on par with ours.
i never been in indonesia. so this video is a really good example to show us there food. always happy about learn more about unknown food
Indonesia is the home of flavor and spice. The cuisine uses the best combination of spices and food texture.
Food texture? Did we watch the same video? Half those dishes had the texture of creamy shits…

Really mr. Mark you are is nomer one culinary youtuber after Nex Carlos always make me hungry everytime you give explanation . Thank you Mark wien. Get healty marks. Bless u and your Family
If my memory serves me correctly, the last time Mark used the expression, "life changing," to describe something he ate, it was the chapli kabobs that he had in Pakistan. Seasoned meat patties that were fried in fat inside a large, shallow open air cauldron. This fried duck must also be amazingly special. I'm confident that Mark wouldn't have uttered "life changing" if that duck wasn't the top of the top. And, he's eaten a lot of stuff around the world.
Great choices this past year for destinations! Thanks for your work and glad to see you back in Indonesia again.
Thank you very much!

Mark, you have been to so many places and enjoyed food that many people only dream of! Your reaction to that fried duck sellers product was so pronounced, genuine, and enthusiastic that I think you, with your reputation, should recommend that Michelin visit this lady' stand! It's been awhile since I've seen you so impressed.
Ayyyy. Welcome back to Indonesia, Mark.
wow .. now he declares our fried duck is the best in the world .. 3 years ago he said the same thing about our roasted chicken taliwang style in Lombok .. what else .. we should record our best according to Mark Wiens somewhere ..
Navigating Surabaya is like being in a culinary amusement park - from iconic rujak stalls to legendary soto warungs, every bite is a thrilling ride for your taste buds. I'm currently in Thailand as we filmed one of our TV show episode. I'm contemplating whether a dropby in Indonesia sounds perfect?
Mampir ke Indonesia Bro. Disini surga Pariwisata
Sounds great, make sure you prepare the route first. Otherwise you'll end up eating too much.
And be careful with the sambal. The Surabayans is a different breed in terms of spiciness. Some people said, "it does feel like getting slapped with a hot train tracks in your mouth, throat, and stomach."
just make sure you have a trusty local guide on your side. The local gems are pretty hard to find. You might end up on touristy traps or just mediocre restaurants.
@@literallyhuman5990If you can handle sambal from Minangkabau, Lombok and Manado, then there's no sambal in the world you need to fear. Especially Manado.
@@nejw8w9ws well, most non-Indo friend that has visited me can't even handle sambal kecap. So I told them to watch out. Personally, I could handle them sambals. Though not in large quantities.
