Oh, man! It started out as an instrumental (because Bernard's always late on his lyrics, apparently) AND in a different key signature (didn't know that). Thanks for posting this. I always like learning about the origins of songs and I love listening to original/demo versions!
Bernard's Overpowered By Funk guitar became the one casualty of this becoming HIS backing band that is truly unfortunate, because of course he couldn't play and sing at the same time... if he had continued to simply supply riffs for Curtis, God knows what this period would have sounded like... its amazing to hear him hacking out the lyrics for this song, which the listener assumes fell out of the sky fully formed... a great historical document!
Shows the amount of perfectionism that goes into production.
Amazing to hear how the song was slowly evolving into the final version.
and which one is the final version???
the album version?
They had so many cool sounds. Seems like they threw everything in and picked out the best parts. Which is what we got in the end. I'm glad what we got
Incredibly beautiful to hear this form and what it became .
Early masterpiece

Barney is a very underrated songwriter and composer
Was bizarre love triangle recorded with the alternate lyrics? I'd really love to listen to it
Just during the first few live gigs. Never professionally that I know of.
