Whenever New Order were asked to do chart show appearances, they always insisted on playing live for real. That sometimes ended up in disaster, as most of those said chart shows lacked the facilities to let a band play live. Their disastrous performance of “Blue Monday” on Top Of the Pops is good example of that. It went wrong because the sound people of Top Of the pops having no idea on how to do a live mix and the band members couldn't hear each other at all. THIS performance however shows what happened when the performance went right.

@@crose7412 Still, there are no tapes and being that sequencers in those days were VERY temperamental (which is also why early New Order live shows were so shambolic) even if they were programmed ahead of time, there was NO guaranty they'd work as intended. Hey, come to think of it, look up early live shows of Depeche Mode (Speak and spell era) and see them use an actual tape player for the drum tracks onstage. Since that was the only way to perform those songs live. And hey, we can continue arguing, but both New Order and Depeche Mode DID play live shows using what they had at their disposal.

Confusion is a pretty good song, it's just the live version sounds kinda wonky, it's much different sounding than the studio and doesn't really do it much justice
