    A video on neck brace, advantages, concerns, prices, choices ? I see both you of riding with one, even on road, while this is quite rare in France. I probably never saw any biker on the road having one... Thanks once again for sharing your thoughts. Paul has a very clear and loud voice, facilitating understanding, at least mine. Keep going !

    You guys are spot on about rolling backward and sliding the front wheel. I've learned the hard way that grabbing the front brake in a panic is NOT how to stop from rolling/sliding downhill. Best thing to do is actually just stall the bike and use the clutch as an auto brake.

      The Tiger might be my next bike. I'm also considering an Africa Twin, F850GS, and KTM 1090 Adventure. I'll be moving up from 310 lbs and still want to do the gnarly off-road passes in Colorado. I don't consider forest roads to be off-road until there are one foot rocks to deal with.,

      So much truth to that . I ran dust 2 dawson with a small guy on a CBR with tkc 80s and stunt bike crash bars and wasnt afraid of the gravel .it fit him and had a blast.

      I agree, that is actually very good advise! I ended up on a secondhand BMW 1200 adventure bike. I am smiling a lot too!

      I moved from the triumph Tiger 800 XCX to KTM 1090 Adventure. If you are going offroad, forget all the other shitty bikes than KTM! The KTM is awesome!

      😆 I'm riding a yamaha wr400f that I got a license plate for. Its light and I don't have to feel bad about dropping it. Long as you're having fun who cares what you ride.

    IMHO your point of view on big vs small also depends on who you are. 6'2" 240lbs Paul may have different point of view than 5'2" 120lbs Paula, and then there's a whole seat height vs inseam. I tried GSA once and couldn't reach to take it off kickstand.. it is a liability even in parking lot just saying

    I'd say getting the bike that keeps you smiling while you lovingly look at it in your garage VS when out riding it in challenging conditions may be two different things. Lots of old guys with more than comfortable budgets buy the big bike they couldn't afford when younger, but forget they are now 60 yrs old and not prepared for the physical demands of ADV riding. Those bikes go up for sale not even used.

    I never disengage the ABS off-road. It's interesting that the front brake will slow me down in loose sand. My first experience with traction control was in wet grass. Normally I would have gone down, but the bike corrected and I stayed up right. I love the combination of Traction and brake control. I still have my Honda SL 125. And I have a Royal Enfield Bullet 500. Haha, it's fun.

    2:55 Awesome, you answered a question I wondering about. I recently got an older model 650GS Dakar with ABS, so I tried the front on a gravel road, and it went skid, roll, skid, roll, in quite a slow cycle, like maybe half a second or a second, and the rear is even slower, which puzzled me. Now I know it's just older tech. - Don't think I will be using it off road, though, rather trust to my feel and I don't like ABS on the rear. Cool. Great channel BTW, excellent presentation.

    The big bike little bike thing. So it boils down to patience b/c the little bike is, what? slower? What's the hurry? Are we racing between tourist sites? I rode a bicycle around the world, and, true, I couldn't come up to traffic speed. But my WR250R will do 80 mph and seems to love 65. It'll gather speeding tickets just fine...but I don't and I've had no trouble fitting into traffic. BTW, when you stand up on the pegs on the WR it makes A DIFFERENCE! Oh, another little thing. So the little bike won't carry much weight? How much weight do we need to carry? As I said, around the world on a bicycle (with 20 kilos of gear)... I was camping, and I still could arrive at dinner clean and dressed well. If you ride a big bike, ride the big bike because you love to ride a big bike. No excuses are necessary. A little bike? It's a blast. I'll just keep that a secret. Habla Español? Me voy a ir a Ushuaia en el WR... despaciomente, y por los caminos traseros. Voy a llegar a conocer a la gente. Voy a pasar un tiempo de calidad.

      Great! I cannot imagine picking up a 250 kilo bike on loose surface, with 20-30 kg luggage. That’s why i bought a Varadero 125 next to my Deauville 700. That is a 90 kg weight difference (!).

      They aren't referring to highway speeds when they're discussing little bikes and not being in a hurry. If you only have a 9 L tank, you're going to be stopping for fuel every 30-60 minutes. There are places where I ride (Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho) where you can easily go 75 miles without a gas station. If you look at a map and your next 2 gas stations are 35 miles away and 110 miles away, you're stopping to top off again in 35 miles. Bigger bikes easily have 200-250 mile ranges and I've known people with a 1200GS say they have done over 300 mi on a tank. It's all about how often you want to stop.

      @@nelsont9650 I LOVE the 450L. I had to get rid of my insanely heavy KTM 625 (heavy for off-road) and gave into pressure from my riding buddies. I honestly took delivery of the new bike thinking I'd sell it in a year or two. I am amazed how good it is. And, I'm 250# and haven't changed suspension springs yet. It can likely be much better!!

    Wisdom!!!
    From scooters to megasaurus cruiser, all bikes make me smile. Newbie to ADV but this Triumph TigerExplorer fits my tall heavy carcass and put a doofus grin on my face from the test ride.
    Service manager jumped on his 800 tiger and took me on a 45 minute race through the countryside. Who does that?

    Great video!
    I can relate to big vs small. I've done the Washington BDR on a WR250R, with stove, tent etc etc. With all that gear, I could do 65 easy on the highway.
    It was so much fun off-road, even with all the gear. Fantastic bike.
    Here's the catch. Hard to quantify, but it was exhausting riding it an hour or more from Seattle to the trails. At 70mph the engine is turning quite fast. Amazing for a 250cc, but still.
    Not to mention when you pass a semi.
    I love this bike, but I wish there was a 600cc version.
    Africa twin someday, but I'm scared my skill is not up to the task of all that weight.

    I have a WR and a Tiger 800 XCA, the WR....great off road and for fire trails....just ride it on the road like you are in no hurry on the road.. My Tiger 800 XCA is a hoot on dirt roads chasing smaller bikes, but too heavy on single track, and too nice to be bashing into trees.
    But when doing Adventure trips, I consider where I will be going and what the road/track conditions would be like, thus I choose the better bike for the conditions. For average riders a smaller bike is more forgiving off road, a bigger bike is more comfortable on road. Also consider can I pick up a fully loaded bike by my self, that also determines what bike.

    I don't ride much offroad, but I'd like to do fire roads, dirt, and gravel. I opted for the R1250GSA knowing I wanted to do long trips and not much single track. If I want to do more offroad and single track I'll invest in a bike suited for that. I love your show because you're realistic and tell people the truth. My takeaway so far from the series is I got the bike I knew I'd enjoy the most, I will go out and get some training which will then just amplify the enjoyment I'm already getting from the bike.

    Great video as a 44yr off road rider unable to ride off road any more I am now a Dual Sport Adventure rider .Because of my back .I have a XR650L turned into more of a adventure style bike for the backroads forest rides in Central Oregon. Dual Sport camping.I finally get to slow down enjoy it. You say smile how about tears . So many things in life we race by and don't stop to enjoy whats right in front of us.       C G thanks for asking I have crushed two discs a third one is almost there. My Chiropractor has been able to get me walking again. My whole spine was compressed. Inversion therapy is good when done at precise times. I can ride now. no more getting crazy those forest roads and scenic rides sure help. talking and thinking about the Lord. The next time everyone goes out to ride and your going 60mph on a single track SLOW DOWN could be your last even though you know the trail and have done it for years. God Bless ""RIDE ON"" BE SAFE.       I suffered from a fractured C3, endured many many years of blinding headaches, easiest way to describe the pain was having your head being squashed in a vice :-S it hurt a lot! anyway the headaches were due to some trapped nerves in my neck, that lead to a numbness on one side of my torso, loss of being able to distinguish between hot and cold on my legs which I'm used too now so that doesn't bother me much really. I used inversion therapy and morphine to relax my spine which released the trapped nerves and no more pain! I still have the numbness and the strange thing with temperature on my legs...no more pain in my head though so I'll settle for that!

    Big vs. small isn't a debate...get both! But I will always have a soft spot for small bikes ever since touring on my WR250R. They do great on highways! And you get to have so much confidence to goof off on terrain you would not consider on an ADV.

    Was in the same dilemma about the big bike or small bike earlier this year. As I already had a GTR 1400 as my long distance road bike but I wanted something as an off road adventure bike. In the end I went with a 2018 DRZ400E as my weapon of choice, mainly due to it being lighter if I was to drop it and cheaper for spare parts or upgrades. Since then I’ve had so much fun with it and look forward to many new adventures over the coming twelve months.

    OK, the whole ABS thing is new to me. Growing up riding small to medium ( 80 to 350cc ) old Yamaha & Honda dirt bikes / Enduros from the 1978 to 1991 range, ABS was not even thought of! hahaha! This new "baby ADV bike" that I got and abso'friggn'lutely *LOVE* has selectable ABS on it. (BMW G310GS) I don't plan on descending steep rocky slopes, and have no clue if it turns off just the rear or both front and rear. But I do know it has a button to turn it off. lol Mmmmmmmm............ I will just leave that button alone for now! :-D

    Great videos guys. I have a 2012 G650GS and have been considering an 800GS. I like backroads as much as paved highways. I understand the trade-offs you're talking about with weight, etc. What are your thoughts on how much better an 800 would be on the blacktop ~ I'm not a speed demon, but want to be able to cruise comfortably. Are they a lot heavier feeling off road? I sure love the 650 though...and they don't make them anymore!

    True, I turned off ABS on old Bmw 2004 and crashed off road on a slip. I just leave it on all the time now and ride not like a hooligan and voila no crash.. Same with tires I leave the pressures in the middle of the tire factory recommendation no problem no crash plenty of grip on and off road.

      I have a 2010 r1200gs and I always ride with the ABS turned off except in rain.
      It saved my ass a couple of times being able to slide and lock the wheels, but I do very rough terrain and not the casual gravel road. As for tire pressure I run them on the lower spectrum and it works great both on and off road.
      Everybody is different so just go with what you are most comfortable with :)

    Great video. I would like to add an observation and some advice for new riders.
    I find that most people asking these types of questions, or perpetuating false info, either don't yet have a motorcycle or don't have enough experience on them.
    Nothing beats experience. Don't take someone's word for it. Riders should always test their limits, and the bikes limits, in a controlled comfortable environment.
    A blanket statement like, never use your front brake in dirt, is silly advice and should always raise the suspicion of a safe rider. Riders should test braking in varying road/ground conditions to learn first-hand what different levels of front brake is effective. And every motorcycle/rider is different.
    I’ve seen potential owners that want to ride but are hesitant about what bike to buy. They often pick a motorcycle for the wrong reason, maybe because they are afraid of what their buddies might think, or how it looks parked in front of Starbucks 😊. If a rider is afraid of the bike, they will either rarely ride it, or hurt themselves. Craigslist is full of motorcycles with low miles, often because someone bought the wrong bike or too much bike for their riding skill. Sadly they never found out how much fun riding could be.

    I would love to have a 1200 gs .Sadly I dont have 20K to get one .. I bought a 1700 Road Star because it was a great price & bullet proof .Rode it 15K and traded it in on a little Triumph Street Scambler this year because of the roads I ride .. 20% dirt roads 10% highways and 70% bumpy back twisty farm roads .. I love the 460 pounds and the tires lasting longer and the 57 miles to the gallon .. Great conversation , Thanks

    After riding my GS for almost two years, I bought a "small" XR650L. The Pig is not only better for me on rougher ground, it gives me experience that I can then apply to riding the GS. Speaking of big bikes: I got my fully loaded GS stuck in sand this past weekend to the point it was "floating" on the panniers , and had to be towed to firmer ground by a 4x4 truck.

      If you insist! A comedy of errors: solo, loaded bike, Shinko 705s, unfamiliar road. Started off as hard-packed dirt, then ran into sand trap next to creek, fell over, caught foot under left pannier, dug foot out, righted bike, explored creek crossing but deep wet sand so decided to turn around, got stuck doing that. knocked bike over to try and drag it clear, but dug in deeper again. Called buddy that was one hour away, unloaded bike while I waited. After pulling it out, mistakenly took different road out and ended up riding through several small mud holes and a rocky creek crossing. It's called adventure riding for a reason.

    Another great video. In the debate about size I will add a couple of other factors. Budget and seat height. Because of my 5' 8" frame many of the adventure bikes with seat heights of 34" to 35" inches do not work. My son rides a 1090 adventure and I cant even stand it up. If I had unlimited funds a R1200GS with the lower suspension and seat would be perfect. Right now the bike that fits my budget and my specifications is a new V-Strom 650. Because my adventure will be more on-road with a few trips on forest service roads the V-Strom will work well. Many will question why not buy a KLR650 or DR650. Both are good Dual-Sport bikes better off-road than the V-Strom but not great for long distances on-road. Part of my new bike wants is ABS and Traction Control.

    Great video, agree with the big bike small bike opinion. Also like the comment of getting a bike to meet women. Most of the women I have met on my bike are deathly afraid of bikes. Disclaimer: I know there are women who like bikes!

    It's all about the riders ability and what you feel comfortable on . I travel on a 650cc mid range bike and it can do all I want on or off road 90% of big bike riders don't know how to handle them off road . Just be comfortable and enjoy the ride . 😉

    The best thing is to have small bike and big bike. If you can afford, a medium size bike as well. But, let's not forget, there are also boats, jet skis, quads, snowmobiles, trikes, travel trailers, off road "jeep" rigs and bunch of other stuff we can have fun with... One thing I did forget. Have you ever tried small (or big) John Deer tractor? Fuuuck, that is fun on a whole different level. Try pushing down small trees, digging holes and braking motorcycle trails through brush and gullies.

    The sweet spot for me is the middleweight class (e.x. ténéré 700) plenty of power to carry two passengers at highway speeds and not too heavy to go offroad. Its not the best for either of those two purposes but its the best at doing fine on both. Compromising is a part of life, the key is to make the right compromises to get the most out of your needs

    If I had all the time in the world, then maybe I would take a small bike, on all the back roads to get where I wanted to be. But time is limited, so I take the highways to get to the mountains or wherever I want to ride. My 1200 GS lets me do both. I live in the south of France, a paradise for riding all year round, as are Italy and Spain, both close, but more accessible by highway and I can spend more time where I want to ride. Anyway, love the advice!

      Nice bike. They were not on my radar back in 2006 when I bought TW200. I should have gotten one and not Super Tenere. Since I got both Yamaha cheap years ago and paid I think I am in the Market for a 400cc to 800cc dual sport next time I buy a bike.

    Yep great video but about front braking...it's all about how aggressive you use it. Whether with ABS on or off, you can easily lose the front tyre if applying too much front brake and if your on road tyres on the mud too especially. On the road you'll go 75/25 ish braking front/rear but on the dirt you'll go 50/50 or more 75/25 rear/front. Again it depends on the surface, how compacted, dry or wet, what kind of tyres etc, but I'd still favour the rear for control and feather the front

    Well I owned a Scrambler Ducati before and with the ABS on, on loose soil, the rear was struggling to find traction so it kept cycling resulting is poor braking when needed, it was scary! And this is a 2015 bike so not really old school ABS either, so I really don’t know if I agree with your point of riding with the rear abs on Offroad apart from the fact that it helps to lock the rear to turn too.
    Having said that, I hear you’re on a coaching trip and coming down to India as well.. I hope you have a great trip.. keep yourself well hydrated and feel free to leave a message if you want to bum around Bombay or ride some dirt roads. :-)

    One bike is NEVER enough!! For me, try and choose a bike that does what you do most of the time the best. I ride a 1250GSA in the UK. We don't have huge areas of off road and it's a long ride into Austria/Switzerland etc. It's comfortable and fast to get me where I want to be, and then it's capable of doing the forest trails etc when I get there. An ideal world?? - ride the GSA to Austria and have a 450 following you in a van for when you get there!! One day!!

    I've been riding for more than 49 years now, mostly off road, rear brake on my KLR-650 hasn't worked for several years now and I really don't care. Also, almost never use the rear brake on my Road King, I find the pedal to be inconveniently located.

    From my personal experience on farm bikes i almost never use the front brake unless i need to stop fast, especially in the mud you lose all ability to steer when your front wheel starts sliding from using the front brake

    I ride a big bike because 50% of my rides involve my S.O. We ride 2up, loaded panniers, hwy and gravel roads. The SuperTenere is a beast in weight but the torque in the engine makes it an awesome long travel bike in any kind of situation. The other 50% of time she's stripped down to one soft luggage with my camping gear for when I ride solo on and off the road, she's not so bad (yeah my bike is a "she").

    What about mid size bikes? the KLR 650, Versys, Wee Strom, F700, 800GS, etc.
    I think those are a great in between.
    Although I'm getting a 1000cc bike after my KLR 650 because I'll mostly do road and some hard packed gravel.

      Yeah, I'm very happy with my Wee. Light enough for me to pick up solo (barely), pretty comfy for long rides, enough power to carry plenty of gear. Not perfect, but pretty darn close.

    I would love to hear your opinion on non-adventure bikes for adventure biking. I love my old Honda Rebel 250, but I have been feeling that I should get NC750 because it is a bit bigger on the CC, has DCT, ABS, etc. I just worry that I am buying for expectation rather than need. I don't need to do 100mph, and if I could ride down most country roads on the really low bike, I could just sty with my "Baby." It is sort of like loving your VW Beetle when you know you should probably get something practical.

      NC750 is built for efficient commuting including on highways but predominantly in cities and with the capability to be a bit faster than most traffic. It’s not designed for high speed or performance.

    Living in Africa right now and at least over here in Tanzania, even 250 ccs is big given the vast majority are 125s and 150s - I've only seen a couple 400s and 650s at all, and no big twin ADVs :0

Never rode motorcycle (always dreaming about one) I am big time mountain biker and I have to tell I can see lot of similarities between MTB and moto/enduro..... bottom line decided to get the bike sometime in future, thinking about BMW 850 and for my wife BMW 310, hope it will happened , for now I am learning a lot on your channel, thank you, cheers from Colorado, V!

      It is the BMW touring screen. It fits the GS or GSA.

    I would like for someone to a real "panic stop" lock up both brakes, with and without abs. ever try it? Ridng here in the philippines ive had to do this three times this year, pround of myself, kept upright, both tires squealing tho. smaller bike 300 lbs

    on the ABS part ... i had to throw away my bike 2 times allready because the "street ABS" refused to break while driving down a 15% - 20% gravel road. so to be honest. you need to test that for yourself. on the 1190 adventure R, street ABS on gravel is a nogo! offorad ABS is perfectly fine .

      achmed20 not all ABS is the same... Even street ABS. My 2014 Tiger was great off road., my 08 R1200GS is pretty good, my 09 F800GS was Terrible. The point is to know your equipment and limitations. Riders need to stop applying blanket advise to their equipment a riding.

    Ok, big bike versus small bike. Big is easy enough to understand, but what constitutes 'small' to you guys? I have an 1150Adv, it is my second having put 125,000 on the first one. I also have a G650 Xcountry (156kgs fuelled, 53hp - so BMW tell us). I got taken out on the motorway on the 1150, so have been using the lightweight 650 for the past year or so while I recovered and got the 1150 fixed up. Yesterday I got her finished and went to ride to the MOT station. I wasn't sure I would be strong enough to get her off the centre stand and out of the garage to be honest. I struggled, but I managed it. Then, as soon as I swung a leg over the 1150 I realised just how much of a behemoth these big 'adventure' bikes are, I wondered how I had ever managed to ride the thing in the first place. After becoming used to the slim, lightweight 650 the 1150 was like an elephant! It is going to take some miles to get me back used to the sheer weight and size of the 1150 Adventure. I am wondering if I really need it. That 650 single has had me doing long distance commutes (536 miles return and a day working last week - in the one day) That isn't the only 500+ mile day commute I have had on her either - she just purrs and is so nimble on the back lanes and I get over 80mpg. It just seems so sensible to go middle weight. Right over to you.....

    ONLY time i use my rear brake is when riding slow to keep the bike balanced, filtering etc other than that im all on the front brake, thats why they have huge duel discs, cause they want you to hammer those front brakes

    Best solution would be to take a small bike on the back of big bike for the long fast easy sections. When it gets gnarly, put the big bike on the back of the small bike and you'll be good to go! 👌👌👌😁😁😁
