    Hi Bret, thanks so much for the videos, I watched them all in 2 days. I bought a 2017 GS, not the Adventure and am really looking forward to learning how to take it off road as well as practicing the on road or parking lot exercises. My question is, when you talk about using 2 fingers on the brake and clutch for a bit more finesse, do you always use that, even on the road and coming to a stop? It seems like at a full stop I might not be disengaging the clutch fully. Is it true that you can really feather the clutch on these bikes without damaging it or putting extra wear and tear? I really wish you taught some classes closer to Los Angeles. The local ones seem to be quite expensive where as yours seem more reasonable. Plus I like your positive explanation and love of riding these and willingness to teach people from the ground up. Thanks again for the great work.

    • @0xsergy
      @0xsergy 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your clutch is adjusted correctly it's disengaged within an inch of travel. Lotsa room. Hydraulic clutches can take more abuse than a dry clutch but keep it to a minimum as always. The replacement time is the main thing, on a bike a couple hours for a guy like me that's never done it before. it's literally about 12 bolts on most bikes and the engine doesn't come out, timewise that's not much,.

    Thanks for vid. I'm 6'2" and even with bar risers and tilting the bar forward I still find it uncomfortable to ride standing up and often pull the handlebars rather than leaning on them and being relaxed. Riding an Africa Twin.

    • @JimmyNewCakes
      @JimmyNewCakes 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same height and trouble here, but on a Tiger 800. With the way it feels to me, I actually think I need to dump the risers. When I'm standing, it feels like I'm not pitching my weight forward enough, so it's like I'm always falling backward-thus, I pull on the bars to stay in position rather than rest on them. I think that ditching the risers will allow me to put that weight just a little farther forward in a nice equilibrium point to not pull or push. Might be worth a try for you as well!

    Great job Bret on another super detailed vid. Been learning so much from you. I'm 6'0 and I get these random pains on upper right shoulder, do you think this could be due to throttle or brake angle? Maybe bars are too far away? I purchased ROX Pivoting Bar Risers 2" for my BMW GS 1200 (2016), will this help? Also read many comments about whether I need to adjust my cables or not once risers installed, will this needed for this GS model? Thanks!

    I have a nerve inside my right shoulder blade that becomes painful after an hour of riding. I am riding a GS 1200 and it has risers from PO. I often wonder if the risers were removed would my pain be less likely. Maybe my hands are to high. I am only 5' 4" tall so may be my hands are higher that n should be. Sure would like to ride all day without this pain. What do yo think?

    Great info as usual! I spend a lot more time on pavement than dirt, so I have my bar set up for that, then when I do hit the dirt, I carry a dedicated wrench (have a Rox riser, uses socket head caps on the clamps) that allows me to loosen-tighten two of the bolts and rotate the bar to be comfortable for standing position, and the wrist-hand-lever position doesnt change significantly for me. I thought I saw somewhere that there is a toggle-type bolt that replaces the threaded bolts eliminating the need to carry a tool.

    • @BretTkacs
      @BretTkacs 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      orangelion03 they do have a lever for the older GS that replaces the bolt. I tried the ROX but they were REALLY tall.

    My 2014 R1200GSA is just different enough to prevent the gear shifter adjustment. Spline gears are not all equal. There are
    wider teeth about 3 o’clock one 9 o’clock. You can not move up or down as the wide two gaps and teeth will not line up. It appears BMW engineered this so only the fine tuning adjustments with the bolts is what you get to work with.

    I realize I’m a little late to the party here, but do you have any advice on where the handguards should be set?
    If I start moving my levers around, they’re no longer sitting perfectly in-line behind the handguards vis-à-vis drop protection.
    If I start moving the bars forward, the handguards go forward with them, and they’re no longer sitting perfectly horizontal vis-à-vis elements/debris protection.
    Does any of this even matter? Perhaps I’m overanalyzing this, as I’m wont to do (raised by a German mother, so I can’t help but consider every last detail in absolute minutia, lol), but I’d really love to hear your learned take on it either way.

    All the ergonomic telling is correct until You are 6'5 feet tall! Bret is I think 5,5 feet and then it works out well. the position of the gear shifter position doesn't work if your foot is a 11 or 12 or more! nothing to find on the internet for us ☻

    Cool video, I will check these things out on my bike. Do you have suggestions or a video for suspension adjustments? I'm still at factory settings but I keep thinking about fiddling with all the knobs.

      Sean McQuade suspension can be a complex subject. We have a few episodes planned to try to demystify it a bit

    One of the things I learned years ago about riding off road was to ride with your elbows up when seated, gives more control over the front end.
    If you have the bars too high that makes it almost impossible, makes it better when standing I guess but people spend more time sitting than standing especially on road.
    Guess it is all a compromise.

      WhiteDRguy 650 it’s not elbows up it’s the relationships of the forearm to hand. Elbows up may not fix this but if it's all correct your elbows will be up.

    You ended the video tips list with « setting the preload to the lowest to lower the bike ». Well, I’m tall enough to not be doing that woth my bike but this has been sort of a debate between us friends. I argue that suspension preload adjustement is for seeting the bike to the rider’s weight, not for simply lowering a bike. The bike’s suspension can start responding badly to the road and can become dangereous to ride. My friends say I worry too much and that it doesn’t really matter. Can you shed some light on the matter? Can setting the suspension incorrectly « just to lower the bike » affect the way damping and traveling behave? I thought I knew, but now I’m a bit confused.
    Great video as always though. Thx!

      Factory settings for preload are intended to utilize all of the suspension travel available. Lowering the bike won't affect it other than you will have less travel in the suspension for big bumps. You can increase sag (lowering the bike) by easing off the pre-load spring. The downside is if you go too far the bike will become unstable at speed. Ideally, you want to lower the bike evenly front and rear the same amount. Most bikes you can't do that because the fork pre-load springs are non adjustable. You can lower the front via the fork tubes in the triple clamps but that changes the bikes steering geometry.

      S has it on point. Suspension is a black art in many ways. We have plans to cover suspension for ADV bikes in several episodes

      Preload is about where the bike sites in its travel (as S D stated) and attitude (think of a truck heavily loaded and ridding high in front compared to a truck with overload springs riding level).
      Preload will not fix springs that are too light for the intended load

    Remember not to rotate the bars so far forward that they hit the windscreen when you fully rotate the front wheel from either side.
    This is an easy mistake to make.

    Very insightful, I would like to know please, zero slack on the throttle is also ideal for on-road riding? i'm 5' 9" with boots hardly reach the ground 140lbs wet i ride a F800GSA can I lower it in any way? shocks maybe? again thanks for all the light you share.

    • @BretTkacs
      @BretTkacs 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Les Ramirez I set all my personal bikes to minimum slack in the throttle. The F8 GSA doesn’t have a lot to work with. At 140lbs you may look into putting new springs on better suited for your weight. (Don’t forget to count your average luggage weight)
      Lighter springs will have proper sag with a smoother more compliant ride. Don’t believe “stiffer is better". The long stroke on heavy braking is OK too. Most people are used to street bikes with less travel.
