Found out that, yes, that's Yvan Cessar conducting. I've enjoyed listening to his evolvement as a conductor and a musician since I first heard him leading a large band over 20 years ago.

He fakes the trill with a fast vibrato. But this is otherwise an immensely accomplished and wonderful performance.

The lighter color you hear is due to his being a light lyric, specializing in Rossini/Mozart/Bellini. You're probably used to a more robust lyric tenor or even spinto, who sing Verdi and Puccini.
This is a light tenor...perfectly normal tone for a light tenor...you've been listening to Mr Kaufman too much!... ;-)
