  • WWE Superstar Ken Patera on who is greater Hogan or Sammartino
Terry Eugene Bollea (/bəˈleɪə/; born August 11, 1953), better known by his ring name Hulk Hogan, is an American retired professional wrestler. He is widely regarded as the most recognized wrestling star worldwide and the most popular wrestler of the 1980s, as well as one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time.[8]
Hogan began his professional wrestling career in 1977, but gained worldwide recognition after signing for World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) in 1983. There, his persona as a heroic all-American helped usher in the 1980s professional wrestling boom, where he headlined eight of the first nine editions of WWF's flagship annual event, WrestleMania. During his initial run, he won the WWF Championship five times, with his first reign being the second-longest in the championship's history. He is the first wrestler to win consecutive Royal Rumble matches, winning in 1990 and 1991. His match with Andre the Giant on WWF The Main Event on February 5, 1988, still holds American television viewership records for wrestling with a 15.2 Nielsen rating and 33 million viewers.[9]
In 1993, Hogan departed the WWF to sign for rival promotion World Championship Wrestling (WCW). He won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship six times, and holds the record for the longest reign. In 1996, he underwent a career renaissance upon adopting the villainous persona of "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan, leading the popular New World Order (nWo) stable.[10] As a result, he became a major figure during the "Monday Night Wars", another boom of mainstream professional wrestling. He headlined WCW's annual flagship event Starrcade three times, including the most profitable WCW pay-per-view ever, Starrcade 1997.[11]
Hogan returned to the WWF in 2002 following its acquisition of WCW the prior year, winning the Undisputed WWF Championship for a record equaling (for the year) sixth time before departing in 2003. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005, and inducted a second time in 2020 as a member of the nWo.[12]
Hogan also performed for the American Wrestling Association (AWA), New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) - where he won the original IWGP Heavyweight Championship - and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA - now known as Impact Wrestling).[13][14][15]
During and after wrestling, Hogan had an extensive acting career, beginning with his 1982 cameo role in Rocky III. He has starred in several films (including No Holds Barred, Suburban Commando and Mr. Nanny) and three television shows (Hogan Knows Best, Thunder in Paradise, and China, IL), as well as in Right Guard commercials and the video game, Hulk Hogan's Main Event. He was the frontman for The Wrestling Boot Band, whose sole record, Hulk Rules, reached No. 12 on the Billboard Top Kid Audio chart in 1995.

Bruno’s fame came without any of today’s cable access, technology or marketing or social media. Imagine what it would have been like if it existed back then. Wrestling was on UHF stations if anyone even knows what that is. The dedication of fans dealing with fuzzy UHF reception!

Bruno IMO. Bruno sold out Madison Square Garden 187 times. He held onto the championship for 7 years. Hulkamania was real, and Hulk did start Wrestlemania. But Sammartino had this natural draw that Hogan never had: let’s be honest, Hogan’s draw was real, but it was more manufactured than anything else.

It wasn't anywhere near that. He wasn't even in MSG 187 times. There was several years in the 60s that the WWWF wasn't even on TV in NYC, and MSG(not the current one-that was opened in 1968) wouldn't even be half-full.
That said, it's Bruno and it isn't close.

It depends on when you started becoming a fan. I go way back to the days Buddy Rogers was champ until he faced Bruno. In those days they made it look more real than in recent years. The smart fan knew deep down it wasn't a real contest. Bruno gave it more legitimacy, he was so real and so strong in his heyday - everybody in the Northeast loved him. He had an indescribable magnetism and drew sellout crowds. And it wasn't just Italians. He was loved by all ethnicities. Since I lived during those times Bruno was the man. But if you became a fan during Hogan's reign he might be the man. It's a little unfair because these fans never saw Bruno in his prime. As for me, I thought the whole Hogan era was a joke. He was very predictable, his character was diametrically opposed to his lifestyle (eat your vitamins while I take steroids), and wrestling became a boring cartoon caricature of itself. I stopped watching shortly after Hogan won the belt.

The whole hulking up routine Hogan did every match, i couldn't take it anymore, and then Vince turned it into more of a kids cartoon than wrestling. I stopped watching around 87-88.

Hard to compare the two. Two different stars both of whom were perfect for their eras. Both reigned under two completely different business models. Bruno had to get the same fans, in the same towns, over and over, and for that they had to really identify with him as a man they could believe in. A strongman, a demon in the gym, but still a man you could reach out and touch and think of as someone you could bump into walking down the street. Under Hogan they went to the PPV business model, and the idea of going all over the world once or twice a year instead around the territory over and over. Hogan didn't draw everywhere (especially those NWA towns that were loyal to JCP and Mid-South) but the money he drew on PPV meant more than a couple dozen sellouts. The merch, the toys, his popularity was the foundation of that whole shift.
Both were wildly successful by the standards of their time, and neither would likely have been able to do what the other did if you swapped their places.

I was told decades ago by marketing people for MSG that when Bruno Sammartino was going to headline a main event his draw was so solid in Madison Square Garden -- no hockey game, basketball game, circus, Ice Follies, or rock concert was scheduled on that night. That's how much money they stood to make.
This was not the case with Hulk Hogan or anyone who followed Bruno as champion. They had sold-out events with WWE but not consistently like when Bruno was in attendance.

The presentation of wrestling was different in Hogan's era than Sammartino's. The introduction of musical entrances with pyro, flashing lights, excitment was generated on the way to the ring. Whenever a run-in happens the guy or gals music plays. In Bruno's era you had to work the crowd yourself, Flair was very good at that. Flair was the only performer that could draw tremendous ratings for TV simply based on his interviews. I think that is where the performing comes in. The toughness and tough guy part, Harley Race for example, was doing those matches often for an hour in length day after day and all the grueling traveling from place to place and overseas. People think Brock Lesnar is tough and inside the ring he is but to travel and maintain that grueling type schedule he quit the business in the early 2000s. Hogan did not do one hour broadway matches. I believe Bruno could, Flair could, Race could, and there were others but those guys, especially Race and Flair did it regularly and rarely missed time due to injury. Hogan actually had hip surgeries because of that leg drop and says he wishes he would have done the sleeper hold instead (lol). Good wrestler or good performer? How about it takes two to have a good match? Also, it STILL is a wrestling match. Not sports entertainment jargon just to be different. No one likes to sit there and keep remembering that it is just a show or just entertainment. They want to sort of get high on it and get into it and then cheer like crazy if the face wins or boo if the heel wins. You have to still work the crowd inside the ring. Good wrestlers and performers are experts at filling time during matches working crowds, stalling, etc. You can't just always take bumps. The multitude of those bumps kills the health of the athlete. Why do a high spot just to be doing high spots? Ken Patera? He had the full nelson, a few slams, a few holds, he was a very strong man. Sorry for these long comments, I just think a guy or gal can only get over now with a title belt on them. Too many belts now. That gimmick is watered down. World Champ and nobody cares about U.S., Intercontinental, TV, just too many belts and no more jobbers. Having Main Event Matches on TV every week uses up all the finishes. You get DQ, and count outs to death. Don't go to a house show expecting a title change, it ain't happening anymore.

Some of your facts are off. For one, Hogan's rise to fame started with Rocky 3 before his WWF return in '83. (He got sacked by Vince Sr. for that cameo). For another, Hogan did not leave WWF for WCW in '93. He did the short lived series Thunder in Paradise, then he got persuaded to join WCW by Eric bischoff, Ric Flair & B. Brian Blair.

Hulk Hogan can actually wrestle. It's just that Vince McMahon didn't want him . To wrestle because Vince McMahon hates wrassling. . Hogan was wrassling inn Japan. The north American hulk Hogan is very different from the hulk Hogan inn Japan where he actually was a technical wrestler. And wrestled .The only difference is Bruno was allowed to do what he wanted to do. Plus there is an agenda against Hogan. So both of these guys were great draws. Inn their own way..
