  • We can't believe that we've found ourselves in this situation!
    In this video we explain why we have a different tow car and how disappointed we are to have been potentially influenced into telling lies and making false insurance claims. Is this a racket? Have you found yourself in a similar situation?
    Watch this one through for full details of our predicament and let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

    Dave and Helen, I applaud your integrity and honesty. In April 2022, someone drove through a red light and hit my car and wrote it off. Contrary to your experience in the UK, the insurance company of the other party tried every trick in the book to get out of paying anything. Fortunately for me, the other party was also a good honest person who admitted to her fault and was very nice throughout. My second piece of luck was that my partner works for a major re-insurance company and therefore understood the technical lingo and could catch any spoken 'fine print' quickly and therefore detect any nonsense. In the end I got what was due to me although I was without a vehicle for more than a month as the courtesy car had been taken off of me after 2 weeks. My timing was lucky. Thanks to the pandemic pushing up the prices of second-hand vehicles (I wanted a new one, but would have had to wait over a year), my 16 year old Pajero was still worth just a bit north of a quarter of the price I paid for it brand new! (🇯🇵 experience)

      The problem in the UK is that we have a Highway CODE - its not law and is wide open to interpretation, hence ins co. trying to avoid paying. We should be like Germany and have Road LAW, which is black and white, no discussion.

      Hi Andrew ,im sorry for your accident but pleased the other party where honest ,we good paying folk pay are premiums on time ,but unfortunately when it comes to a valid claim where made out to feel guilty, horrible position to be in. unfortunately this is the world we now live in. there is no loyalty's with regards insurance or any service, they just want your money and run.

    This ridiculous behaviour by insurance companies is why all of our insurance premiums are going through the roof. All this cost for a small mark on a wheel. It’s completely ridiculous and has to stop. I also don’t even see how he can claim for whiplash against his own insurance when he’s at fault and caused the accident ?

    Love your channel for the total honesty you provide, really enjoyed watching as always, having just moved back to a caravan from motorhoming we were considering a change of tow car from our Ford Kuga and were thinking of something like the Helix but taking on board what you say maybe it is not so practical, Maybe we will keep towing with the Kuga for a little longer til we really do know what we want. It is terrible that the insurance companies are pressuring people into making false claims which is mainly for them to make more money whilst the rest of us have to suffer the hike in premiums. Thanks for a great video

    I saw the thumbnail and thought “why has Dave bought a pick up”. Gail sat down and said “They’ve never bought that surely”. I drove a Toyota Hilux around 15 years ago at work and from experience, in my opinion found it impractical. You almost need a step ladder to access the centre of the load area.
    Top marks for honesty though Dave 👍 and an eye opening video. I’ve been driving for 37 years and never claimed, yet insurance continues to rise and it’s become clear now why ! All the best to you both, Rob & Gail 😀

    Hi Dave & Helen. We were given a similar vehicle a few years ago by the insurance company & like you it towed fantastic but the ‘boot’ space was horrendous & this had a cover on it . Try kneeling on the ribbed base when you need to get bags etc from it !! One good point was I was thinking about getting one for work but thankfully decided against it due to the impracticality of it & being so high up at the back aswell! Insurance companies are so bad at pestering you to make a claim!! Still get pestered now 5 years after a major accident! Well done for saying no . Great video again 👍👍

    Goodonya from Australia Dave and Helen, honesty and integrity are sadly lacking in many instances in the UK, here in Australia and elsewhere. As others have said Dave, kudos to you and Helen for not being tempted into what is essentially a fraudulent claim. To be honest, these things really p*** me off. Like you, I've been driving 40+ years. No accidents and no claims but an ever increasing premium. On a lighter note. I have been looking at a new tow car lately but a pickup is definitely out of the question. Unless of course you fancy one of those awful fifth-wheel thingamabobs. I'm guessing not 😆👍

      In the case of a 5th wheel, then it would need to be a pick up, you're right. I have looked inside a few 5th wheels, very nice but also pretty impractical for our roads and camp sites. The whole insurance industry it now seems to me is corrupt. Thanks again, Helen & Dave

    Hi Helen and Dave, can’t say it was a shock to learn about the insurance companies’ shenanigans but well done for staying out of it, you must be one of the few. We’ve had our second trip out with our Freedom micro caravan and eager for more. I notice that your (own) tow car is an automatic. Our tow car is a Citroen C3 Picasso automatic and wondered if it best to drive in auto-mode or gear-selection mode when towing? I notice that the car doesn’t seem to like 6th gear when the caravan is behind. BTW I had the caravan and car matched on the “Towsafe” online service. Keep up the good work!

    • @HelenandDave
      @HelenandDave  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Hi Stephen, good to hear from you. We always drive in automatic mode but the Kia also has gear change paddles on the steering wheel. If I ever feel the car is over revving in a gear I flick the paddle to change it or if I feel the car needs to go down a gear I flick the opposite paddle. It's rare that I have to do it because East Anglia is so flat, so it's mainly when we are in Scotland or the hills of northern England. Thanks for your support. Cheers, Helen & Dave

    I had a similar experience recently. A minor prang in a car park, car that hit me doing only about 2 M.P.H, I was stationary by the way, scuff around the wheel arch and a bit of paint off the centre of the alloy wheel. Thought like you, don't see why I should be out of pocket, car had slight damage and it would not T Cut out so reported to my insurance company. Took it for repair assessment and all was good, damage noted and date fixed for repair to be done. Next thing is I get a call from my insurance saying the car was "unsafe to drive because of damage to the wheel", which was ridiculous and the repair assessor definitely did not say that, if that was unsafe I would guess 90% of all cars on the road with alloy wheels would be unsafe, kerbing, loss of paint, etc. I challenged this and they backed down, I was an aero engineer for 30 years so I have a good idea what is safe, no further comments from them. Took the car in for repair and they had it for about 10 days, hire car obviously, did not see why I should be inconvenienced and I do pay extra for "like for like car replacement", I thought it should have been 2- 3 days but hey ho. The point is, that insurance companies are trying to drive up cost of repairs through use of hire cars, no the wonder insurance premiums are going up in the UK. Incidentally a vlogger I follow " the electric Viking" advises these steep increase in insurance premiums is a UK only issue, not seen in the USA or Australia. To my mind the insurance companies need to be investigated, there is something fundamentally wrong and possibly illegal about the way they are operating.

    Sorry to hear of your problems. I have an incredibly strong dislike of insurance companies, my favourite line when looking to renew is to ask for a quote that is cheaper than the fine for not having insurance!
    As a quick footnote, ask your insurer if they are still covering you even though they have supplied you with a vehicle not fit for purpose. I think you will find the towball is not compatible with your alko hitch. There is a version of it that is though but the ball neck is taller.
    Excellent presentation as usual.

    I hit a fox late one night and it did a surprising amount of damage to my VW Golf. I got a quote for the repairs. I talked to the insurance agent and he said I would lose one year’s NCB on top of the excess for claiming. I asked if that meant that in a year my insurance premium would return to the same as then and he said no, it wasn’t that straightforward as there were other issues to consider. It turned out that by claiming it would take seven years for my insurance bonus to recover to the point it was at the time of the accident. That worked out at several times the cost of the repairs so I said I would not be claiming. I then went to the body shop to make an appointment. They asked for my insurance details and when I said that it was me who was paying he went back to his computer and came back with a different quote about 30% cheaper than the original. He pointed out that the cost was always less for private customers than insurance customers. I presume in my case the extra £600 or so that the insurance company would have paid out would have been shared between the repairer and the insurance agent. No wonder insurance rates keep on rising.

      Hi Margaret, thanks for watching and leaving a comment. I was of the opinion, as I mentioned in the video that with a cover or a hard top it would be a lot different. In the case of the Toyota, even a 6ft 2ins brut of a man like me could not reach into the flat bed very easily to retrieve items and although it wasn't mentioned in the video, getting in and out of the cab on this particular model was a struggle. So a colleague of mine decided to play bumper cars in our car park. Hit my car whilst reversing into a space. Both company cars. We have an accident repair company next to us. They estimated the repair to both vehicles to be in excess of 6k for something that a smaller body repair centre has repaired for less than 1k. No doubt they just wanted to generate a parts list and an invoice, then return the parts.
    With regards the pickup, I totally get they are not for everyone. But I tow with a SsangYong Musso pickup. For me it works very well. Fuel consumption doesn’t bother me as it’s a company car so it’s my only expense. With two kids the space in the pickup bed is very useful indeed, though as you said you do really need a hard top or tonneau cover to make the space useful. It also tows extremely well.

      That’s what’s needed for sure. Payload, towing capacity and looks are certainly not in question. It depends how you view versatility though. Well done for your honesty regarding fraudulent insurance claims. It’s disgraceful that it is actively encouraged ( by your own company!).
    As you say for what was clearly a minor collision it has been needlessly escalated into a many £ k claim.
    Then we as motorists ultimately pick up the bill by having to pay increased premiums, when in fact we haven’t even claimed 🤬🤬.
    With regard to the Toyota Hilux pick up. We tow with the 2.8 litre one, which I personally think is a great tow vehicle ( I get low 20 mpg when towing 1700kg van and high 20’s when driving solo)
    I have it for work purposes and have a canopy fitted over the rear. With a canopy fitted it becomes a huge useable space which when caravanning is great for throwing all types of stuff in without having to worry about it getting dirty etc.
    Totally understand that the one the insurance company have supplied is open to the elements and as such isn’t a lot of use !
    Hope you’re Kia is returned soon 🤞.

      @HelenandDave  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thans Gary, appreciate your comment very much. Absolutely no doubting the towing capacity of the Toyota and what is dead space for us could well be utilised better with a cover/canopy but alas for us it just wasn't practical with just the open bed. Hope to have the Kia back soon, 2 weeks to fix a scuffed wheel is now becoming the issue. Thanks again and ATB, Helen & Dave

    We were hit in the back 3 years ago. I have one of the first new Defenders and in the ice a van went in the back of me as I was waiting to turn right. The van lost its front end and minimal damage was done to the Defender, except they couldn’t decide if the deployable tow bar was damaged or not. The car went away for 5 weeks as it was so new there were no spares. I got a replacement RR because there was nothing similar at over £700 a day! Plus, like you the insurance company tried to get me and the better half to claim non existent injuries. In the end I took my car back early but had to sign a disclaimer saying that I wouldn’t tow until the bar had been replaced. No wonder insurance is skyrocketing!

    Well done David for sharing your experience of a minor incident being totally blown out of proportion. The third party that collided with you should be ashamed/ the insurance company that advised you to claim for whiplash should be struck off & named( i know you can’t do that!!) The evidence of the damage you are asking for should have not even gone through the insurance companies, surely a claim would cost the third party more than the £250 you were asking for in the long run? It just shows the state of this country where insurance companies & lawyers are dragging out stupid claims & must be making money I suppose!!!!?🤔🧐🥳

    The trouble is, even though the accident was not your fault and his insurance company will be responsible, what normally happens with insurance companies, is that they have an agreement to share the costs of claims between them, behind the scenes, (like laying off a bet) and you will definately be required to confirm on your next insurance quote, that you have been involved in a no fault accident, within the last five years, which will definately put up the cost of your insurance for 5 years, each time you insure your vehicle, until after 5 years, when you no longer will have to declare that accident for an insurance quote.

      @@HelenandDave It happened to us on 2 no fault claims, on my wife's car and my own. The first one, my wife was reversed into by a car exiting a car parking space backwards into the wife's car. The other one was on my estate, whilst i waited to turn right, stationary at a give way line, whilst a car was turning left and on an icy surface, he slid into my vehicle. In both claims the other vehicles admitted responsibility but we had to declare both accidents for 5 years on our yearly quotations.

    I have a dashcam, I always park so the nose of the car is facing outwards (ie I reverse into the parking space) and a ALWAYS leave my dash cam running for exactly this reason. Oh, I also have an older version of your hire truck. Yes, the parking spaces are an absolute pain - but there is hope on the horizon due to spontaneously exploding EV's - as most car parks are now looking to increase the space allocation due give people more room to escape if they are unlucky enough to be next to spontaneously exploding said EV's!! Oh, and I have a hard top on the tub and a reversing camera. Brilliant. Does exactly what I want. Shame they didnt give you one with a top. I dont use my truck for work, it is really an SDP vehicle but tows so nicely. I have had cars that are supposed to tow my caravan, and they have all fallen short. This doesnt.

    12:00 Strangely Dave, the back of the pickup is called a bed, short for cargo bed. My wife's car got hit in a car park while she was stationary, with her parents in the vehicle. The poor old boy in the other car was virtually deaf, so had no idea he had made contact with her car but admitted liability. Long story short, our insurer outsources the entire repair process including loan cars to a middle company. The other party's insurer contacted me and offered a reasonable cash sum bonus to handle the repair (cutting out the middle company) and I could still use my preferred repairer. There's no gain with any of this when you factor in the time and inconvenience.

    Not sure how suitable the Hilux is on narrow British roads, but in Australia that is the country's number one selling vehicle, followed by the Ford Ranger. Our caravans tend to be heavier than British ones, so the need for something with a 3,500kg towing capacity is popular. The Dodge RAMs are gaining popularity, along with the Chevrolet 2500 and Ford F-150/F-250 models. British caravan parks seem more like carparks. Do you have caravan parks that are more holiday themed parks with facilities for children etc? Seeing caravans without roof mounted AC units is an odd sight. We got to 37°C yesterday here, and couldn't survive without AC, except for perhaps two months of the year. One of the more popular activities is what we call "free camping", where you grab your caravan or camper and just go find a remote spot all to yourselves. We owned a caravan, but now have a 12.5m tag axle coach converted into a motorhome. With a 1,000 litre water tank, and enough solar to not plug in for months on end (we haven't plugged into a caravan park powerpoint since February), we are pretty well self-sufficient. Good for you too in not succumbing to the insurance request. Fraudulent claims like that do nothing for insurance premiums. Safe travels and best wishes from a new Australian subscriber.

    • @HelenandDave
      @HelenandDave  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, always brilliant to get new subscribers especially when they’re on the other side of the world, thank you and thanks for the comment. We’ve watched with envy many of the amazing caravans you have in Australia. Really quite rugged off road type vehicles and chunky tow cars too. It’s easy to see why you would need something like the Hilux. Yes, there’s a lot of holiday parks with huge facilities, entertainment venues, pools and more over here but ‘wild camping’ is not permitted although in Scotland the rules seem to be more relaxed. Stay tuned! All the best, Helen & Dave 👍

    People at low speed impact crashes are always complaining of neck and back pain, when the vehicle's have very very light damage, and in one case there was no damage at all to the car, but the man said he was unable to get out of the car, his attitude soon changed once the police and fire service arrived, and he was told that if he was not able to get out of the car then car roof would be removed, and the police said a report would be sent to the insurance company with photographic evidence of the lack damage, he was then out of the car in seconds and didn't complain of any pain.
    I claimed for a dumper repair years ago from a man that hit the back of my car, when i went to renew my policy in the section have you had any claims in the last 5 years, I put NO, two days later the insurance company called and said I had not been honest and if I wanted the policy it would cost an extra £50.00. I explained that i had not claimed on my policy, there answer was no but you claimed off someone else, but that not on my policy, the lady agreed but she said they still class it as a claim according to the insurance companies. Have a great time keep warm and safe.

    Can't believe the insurance scenario. No wonder we all pay through the nose for insurance. Just an aside, here in Australia Kia Sportage would certainly not be used as a caravan tow vehicle. We have an Isuzu MUX which is great and more like a car. It's stablemate the Isuzu DMAX ute wasn't suitable for us. Like you Helen and Dave, we like the extra space inside the vehicle. Cheers

    I agree with all your points. However, it’s an unfortunate fact that you’ll probably be loser in all this as your insurance renewal will increase which I think is totally unfair when in instances like this it’s a no-fault claim. Would be interested to hear what it actually goes up, although it’s going to be difficult to get a true comparison due to the hefty increases everyone is paying this year.

    If you are claiming from a 3rd party who has admitted fault, your insurer not only gets the sum due to you, but they also charge a fee (%) for processing additional claims for you, increasing their cut and income as your insurer.
    Hardly surprising that they are so keen to add extra claims when they are not paying, but… if they are doing that to other insurers do they honestly believe that others don’t do it to them when it is their insured that is (even partially) responsible.

    My experience. I have a Toyota Hilux, a Ford Ranger and a Ford Everest SUV. The Hilux is crap at towing more than two ton but a great work truck. The Ranger can tow 3.5 ton easily, i do that all the time and is also a great work truck. The Ford Everest is just so much better to live with as both a tow car with the capacity to carry luggage without it getting wet or damaged.
    Putting heavy items in the caravan is a good way to destroy the seals around the walls.

    It's often unscrupulous solicitors that make those phone calls.
    I've lost count of the number of calls I've had like that, despite not having had an accident. I think all solicitors carrying out this practice should be banned from trading, because in reality, it is costing us all a small fortune.
    We've also owned a Hi Lux Invincible in the past. It towed very well, but was a little bit light on the back end, especially when going around roundabouts in the wet.
    We had a fibreglass hard top fitted to ours and it enabled us to take an inflatable dinghy and a decent size outboard motor away with us.
    You obviously wouldn't want to take that sort of equipment in an SUV or car due to petrol fumes etc.

    Well you can get a lot of Ghost Ship to bring with you in that. Had a Navara way back as a tow vehicle, not so stable with nothing in the back, but now thinking about an Amarok so I can get a mobility scooter in it with a crane thingy, that will help stability. Trouble is all the issues with lithium battery EV fires, am somewhat put off, so scooter may need a V8 or similar, bigger crane will be needed, more weight in the back, even better stability, should be well sorted.

    So what have you done about your insurance company encouraging you to make a false injury claim? These calls are generally recorded so submit a Subject Access Request for a transcript or copy of your conversation. Then once this evidence is in your possession make a formal complaint to the insurance company and when that goes nowhere, refer your complaint to the insurance ombudsman.
    Report them to Trading Standards. Get in touch with Martin Lewis the financial expert. Report them to the Police, last time I checked, fraud by false representation was still a crime. Although you didn’t succumb to their suggestion I’m sure many others will have so there will be numerous lines of enquiry for the Police to follow up if they make the effort. You have an opportunity here to put a stop to a multi million pound fraud loophole which I have no doubt many if not all the insurance companies entertain in one form or another.
