Don’t buy a caravan cover until you’ve seen this video

  • In this video Dave demonstrates why a little more money spent initially can be worth it in the long run.
He demonstrates why a poorly fitting towing cover has caused damage to the caravan but a more expensive custom fit cover gives the protection you need when towing.
Also with bad weather on the way, the main cover has to go back on the caravan, not the easiest job on your own but with a couple of props Dave gets the job done.
Let us know if you have snow in the comments below.
    Cheers,
    Helen & Dave

Hi Dave, top tip from me - pack a lint roller in the van, these are ideal for getting debris or small grit off the towing cover. We found autumn leaves the worst for crumbling and getting stuck on the fibres. The lint roller really helps - then once a year we vacuum the insides to pull any deep crumbs out. 👍
    Hope you’re both well.
    Dan.

Hi Dave and Helen. We had a full cover from Specialised, but now changed to their tailored roof cover. The reasons being it’s easier to remove if we want to go away during periods of bad weather, it protects the roof the front and the back which are the worst affected by the falling leaves and mess that accumulates in the winter and we can easily access the van if we need to. I don’t know about you, but wiping the sides down is easy enough if it needs it. So far we are delighted with it and the sides have remained clean on their own. All the best to you both. Alan

Yes, it's very easy to put on. Very similar approach to the towing cover but longer of course. I think it's one of my best ideas for the caravan tbh

Like the front cover. You made putting the full cover on look easy. We've braved the bad weather in North Lincolnshire. Burst water pipes on the site when we arrived. Soon got the caravan toasty warm, glass of Baileys, weekly dose of caravantastic, how can life get any better. Keep up the good work. Hope Helen's feeling okay.

Hi Stephen, nothing better than a cozy caravan and a little tipple. That was the quickest I've ever put the big cover on to be honest, it can be a pig! Hope you have a great stay and the weather gets better for you. Best wishes, Helen & Dave

Hi Dave, I’m a life long tent man, but have just bought a small 20 yr old van for myself and the dog. In Carlisle we have had 3-4 inches (8-10cm) of snow, love watching your videos as it’s given me a good insight into the differences of camping and caravan. Hope Helen gets better soon, cheers Gary

Hopefully there will be better weather around the corner (after this weekends storms) and then you & the dog can get caravanning and we hope you have as much fun as we do. Stay tuned! We never used a towing cover until recently we purchased a Protec and we're over the moon with it so I'm a convert... when you were on the wall and the film speeded up my wife thought for a second you were falling and it gave us a real fright 🙂 but thankfully it was an illusion and you were actually fairly agile I must say... we live in Bridlington almost on the seafront and woke up to 4 inches of snow this morning... we'll be glad when it's gone so we can get out in the van... it does look nice though... cheers Dave and Jane 👍

We are up in North Northumberland also on the coast, just over 20 miles south of the Scottish Border. Just a dusting on snow last night (Wed 17-Thu 18 Jan), the country lanes here are white and icy, not a lot of gritting.. We use a Specialised Covers full cover, which is waterproof. Tailored to fit our van with clear panel for the solar panel which keeps the battery topped up. Bit heavy and not the easiest to fit, but does a fantastic job keeping the van clean and dry ! Well worth it, and saves all that cleaning to remove winter dirt and algae. Best wishes to Helen for a speedy recovery. Regards, Ian C

I'm off to Bolton on Saturday (staying in a hotel) but I know they've had the white stuff, hopefully they won't have more until I'm safely back home on Monday.

Great vlog Dave! Can’t believe the damage the generic front cover caused. When we get ours I’ll be investing in a proper front travel cover like yours as it also stops stone chips on the window and body when travelling too and also a full cover one for when it’s in storage. We do plan to use ours in winter too but as you say it’ll keep it cleaner!
Hope Helen is not suffering with her shoulders and arms too much and you get back out again soon!! Kind regards to you both, Adam.

Hi, I have watched a few of your videos, a very good watch I might add, we are newbies so it's good to know that a full cover is better for keeping the dirt off, we currently have a roof cover.....
One way of putting a full cover on, I would roll it up like a sausage from both ends to the middle then place it on the top off the van, weighted down with something and then roll it out the desired way, front or rear first, that would make it easier when single handed. Ian & Ruth

Thanks Dave, we invested in a brand new but secondhand Specialised Cover for our caravan for over winter, model specific so it fits like a glove. I’ll take it off in March so will see then how good it’s kept the caravan clean. I paid £270 verses £550 of the website so we were happy to drive the 2hrs each way to collect it. Without a doubt it was a two person job!!! Like you I’m now looking for a Specialised Elite Pro towing cover as they really do look the business!! Hi Dave. Fantastic video, but just a tip for the full cover, I put inflatable beach balls through the roof windows flat and then inflate them in place so it creates a pitched roof and allows the water to run off better, plus it lets the air flow between the van and the cover as well as allowing you to open the top vents with cover on. I used to use the universal towing cover but all those straps drove me mad and one got loose and scratched the van when flapping about, so since then I have always used Specialised fitted towing covers. On my new van I thought I would go for the Tow Pro Infinity Elite to protect the big Coachman top window which is a pain to get all the dead flies off. It does need a small step to fasten the top velcro but can still be done by one person, I would highly recommend it. As for the full cover, I have always used Specialised tailored covers and find the fit perfect.

Hi Dave, great video. I started off with a (Bailey branded) Specialised tow cover; unfortunately after just a few trips the zip departed from the material on the offside part that “zips up” the cover. It was replaced but same thing happened. Returned for full refund and purchased the ProTec towing jacket, really pleased with it and easy fit … zips up the middle. For this winter purchased the ProTec full caravan cover - two person fit but quite easy. Love your good old fashioned H&S … with the use of the wall 👍👍 great stuff

Hi Dave I don’t use a front cover bought my van before they were a thing, after 14 years of towing I’ve only got a couple of minor stone chips so I don’t think it’s worth me buying one.
I’ve had a tailored full cover from Protec from day one. I use it between November to March, which is the worst of the weather. Van is spotless when I take it off. The cover keeps the frost and ice away from the joints. I use the long caravan wash brush handle to pass the straps under the van to the other side, storage is grass so I can’t just throw them under. Cheers.

WOW: It was only last week that we were looking at a winter cover. Like you say it's a personal preference but we have our van at a storage site that has a few trees and are still mulling it over. As you know we are based up in Manchester with about 30mm of snow last week but it soon went.
We have a specialised towing cover (not as posh as yours but the next version down). Wouldn't be without it. It's a godsend.
Still undecided about the winter cover, you need to persuade me ;) Excellent vlog once again. Hope the boss is doing well. Stay safe and look forward to many more. Mossy & JM.

Hi Paul, small world? or great minds? The towing cover is a must as far as we're concerned and in this weekends storm we're so pleased we had a full cover on because the driveway and indeed our windows on the bungalow and the top of the caravan (cover) are covered in twigs and debris off the trees. @@paulmostyn6901 Hi Paul, we have used a cover since we started caravanning 7 years ago and can honestly say we have not experienced any issues with scratches. We have scratches on the caravan but they are hairline and I think are just picked up on the road or through general use, just like you would get on your car. Glad we had the cover on the other night. twigs flying around all over the place in the storm. ATB, Helen & Dave 👍

Hi Dave, not Caravan specific, but I noticed you made the effort to lay all your straps nice and flat. A Rigger told me never to do this as the wind will Whip and Drum the strap causing damage to whatever is underneath, he said put a "enough" twists in the strap to "bugger" the air flow. I'm a mechanical engineer so only have a vague grasp of aerodynamics, but it does make sense. I hope Helen can get sorted so she feels at least a little more mobile. Cheers Squash

Hi Squash, I hadn’t heard of that before but you know what, I’m sure that Rigger guy is spot on because in extreme winds it has made some horrific noises (without causing any damage) but now you’ve told me this, I will deffo try it THANKS 👍 Helen is struggling a bit I’m afraid the pain killers really aren’t doing much and she needs treatment but as you might expect, it’s going to take time to get to that point. Great demos Dave, although we have never had the inclination to use any covers, we have not had any issues in the 25 or so years we have had caravans. For us, the caravan is stored at home where it is exposed to prevailing wind and would be more than difficult to put on and take off and would very likely flap around a lot in some conditions and the damage you have encountered is for me a good reason to avoid. The need to wash the van or the front before fitting them is a pain too, especially after a night time journey home and having work the next day, which has regularly been the case for us. Each to their own of course, just a personal observation.
(Oh, to save you the job, I promise that the van will get that wash before the next trip🧹🪣😉)

    Hi Dave
Sorry to hear Helen is not feeling too chipper. Hope she improves soon! Our van also sits on our driveway and also has trees nearby so I was interested to see what your thoughts were on covers. It was (brand) new last October and the roof is already going a bit green in places so I’m really tempted.
As to towing covers the last time we went away the van got completely covered in mud and road filth. To be fair it all needed washing anyway once we got home so not sure quite what the benefit would be but I suppose we could at least have accessed the front lockers without getting dirty hands and the views out of the front windows would have certainly been clearer.
No snow here in Nottingham but very cold. More rain forecast next week which will be bad news for those poor unfortunates that were flooded out a couple of weeks ago.
Keep up the good work mate.
    Michael

Hi Michael, thanks as always. Helen is taking loads of meds but really needs to get a cure, which looks like it could take a while. I find the towing cover keeps the front clean but then the cover gets filthy so either way something will need a wash but the main priority is stones that get flung up by other traffic. The cover we have was dearer but it gives very good protection. Fingers crossed for better weather all around. Take care, Helen & Dave

Another excellent video. I do question the need to cover the caravan whether it is in transit or in storage. In forty years of caravanning and owning six different caravans in total over that time we never used any covers whatsoever and never experienced any smashed windows or damaged bodywork etc. I know that we may have been lucky but I was always concerned about the covers rubbing against the caravan and marking the paintwork in windy weather..

Thanks very much David. I know what you mean, it's a dilemma, a bit like having an insurance policy. I've never claimed in 40 years of driving or indeed had an accident (that was my fault) but you can bet your bottom dollar if I didn't have it, I would be sure to need it. For me it's the same with the towing cover...it's a just in case scenario. As for the main cover, I have no doubt it keeps the caravan much cleaner through the winter months, the only thing I ever wonder is, should I have an expensive one or the cheap version that I have and that's something I'm not so convinced about. Thanks as always and let's hope it quickly warms up so we can get back out again, we're getting cabin fever! Cheers, Helen & Dave

    Hi Helen and Dave 😊,
Great and informative vlog, really enjoyable.
We do use a towing cover and its from specialised, its more a basic style but does the job, either way cheaper than replacing broken caravan windows if you can get one without waiting weeks.
Sorry to see the damage a generic cover can cause 😢
Full cover, not so sure for us as we keep our van in storage and the solar keeps the battery topped up, thinking maybe a cover would stop the solar working correctly ?.
Looking forward to your next travelling vlog.

Hi Alan, I see posts where people say its not worth the money. But when you have the sun shining through your front windows, you will then see why you need one. The grit and small particles that damage the window is so small, but over time without a towing cover you are sandblasting the front of your van.
