This is the track that Todd woke up in the middle of the night and wrote start-to-finish in one session, but was convinced it was someone else's song that he'd remembered! He played it everyone he knew asking if they recognised it, and no-one did, so he put it on his album, and for years Todd was convinced someone would come out of the woodwork and sue him - hasn't happened yet! 😅
This is from the Something/Anything? LP, a double-album in which he plays and sings every single note on sides 1-3 (including this track), with side 4 played live in the studio with his band... he's a genius, amazing producer too, try "I Saw The Light" next...

Not the usual entry song for Todd Rundgren, but its' great to hear someone react to it! Its one of my favorites! Most reactors start with 2 other songs from this album - I Saw the Light and Hello It's Me.This is from his seminal 1972 double album Something/Anything. Considered one of the most influential albums of the 70s (maybe that's why the song sounds familiar?). Sides 1-3 are all Todd - instruments and backing vocals. He wrote, recorded and produced it himself for the most part. Side 4 consists of songs he recorded live with a band and backup singers. You can't go wrong with checking out more Todd! 🙂

My all time favorite musical artist. His music is so eclectic. Pop, Prog, Soul, Rock, Rap, you name it.

And then…react to Todd Rundgren’s Utopia to understand the true breadth of Todd’s genius

Todd was a Pop's Renaissance Man in the 1970s. Aside from his considerable output he produced some of the great albums of the 1970s. They included the debut album by The New York Dolls, The Band's Stage Fright, Straight Up by Badfinger, We're an American Band & Shinin' On by Grand Funk Railroad. and Meatloaf's Bat Out of Hell. That's barely scratching the surface.

From Upper Darby, PA, my neck of the woods. If you were inclined to listen to Todd, you picked a pretty good place to start. From one of the guitar gods of the 60s with the group Nazz to one of the most in-demand producers (notably XTC) and everything in between, Todd was always an innovator. The studio banter throughout this album kind of makes you feel like a "fly on the wall".

'''I Saw The Light'', 'Hello It's Me'' and ''Can We Still Be Friends'' were his big hits in the 70's. I had a few of his records and although he explored a LOT of styles, he never let down that ''Hello It's Me'' sound. If you're picking up something familiar, it is most likely because you heard one of the songs mentioned above.

Todd is a true genius who is still doin it today. This one was recorded when he was 21-22….double album…three sides (including this one) are all him, all instruments, vocals etc. this album had two very big hits, but as became a habit with him, he totally changed direction the next album (much to the chagrin of the label). He has covered just about every style imaginable. Very deep rabbit hole here….i hope you will dive in

Are you aware that every single vocal, instrument, percussion, and synth performance, as well as writing the music and lyrics, AND all of the production, engineering, mixing, and mastering were done by Todd Rundgren, solo, using analog technology, in 1970 and 1971? Something/Anything was a tour-of-force of that or any other musical epoch!

This was THE song that got me thru a really bad breakup with the first woman I dated after a divorce after 30 years. Todd’s first two records aren’t as well know but MUST listens. After Something Anything he decided to stop writing in pop formula as he was making so much $ producing, he could do what he wanted. Then came out with A Wizard A True Star. So far ahead of it’s time. I could go on all night. He is, hands down, my favorite artist.

You may have heard the Tom Middleton cover; it got decent airplay on Canadian stations, 4-X CKLW, which were heard in the States.

Todd is an awesome talent. Very under rated . Now he is a seasoned veteran musician and still awesome. Check out some his vids with Daryl Hall

all of the voices and instruments on this track are Todd. The first three sides of this double album are all Todd.

There was a Canadian artist named Tom Middleton who covered this in 1972, the same year this came out.

Never been a huge fan of his work, except for the Wizard/True Star album(not entirely sure if that's what's it's actually called) which is mind blowing.
He's probably better known as a producer, not all of his productions worked, but the ones that did were massive.

Does it remind you of Hall & Oates? Has a Philly Soul feel

Absolutely ! A lot of Todd Rundgren songs could pass for Hall & Oates and vice versa. Rundgren even produced their album War Babies in 1974 on which he plays as well as some members of his band Utopia.
