Man I miss these games. I thought it was absolutely mindblowing at the time you could hook this up to Sonic 2 and replay the levels with Knuckles and find all kinds of hidden secrets... loved it
Sonic the Hedgehog; Sonic the Hedgehog 2; Sonic 3; and, Sonic and Knuckles were all masterpieces of game and sound design. There's been nothing like them before or since. Not even Nintendo's Mario series is as good as these are.
Man this game was so hard when I was a kid. Each stage was epic, specially the last part of Flying Battery, Sandopolis Act 2 and the boss fight of Lava Reef. Really great game
God this, man, THIS is the real deal. This game is enjoyable to play no matter how many times you did it and mainly for me it gave me the real hype when you hit the Lava Reef until the end it's just, astonishing. The soundtrack, you're pretty much in the center of the Earth where the Death Egg crashed, going towards your final encounter, Knuckles part... God, simply perfect, I remember when I was a kid I saw my brother playing it in the Secret Palace and I cried because I thought Knuckles was dying, and actually he was just tired since he has been through a lot taking care of either Sonic and the Master Emerald... Then he helps you out since Robotnik actually betrays him to gain power... Then you rush to fight Metal Sonic and then into the Death Egg to finish it once and for all and also that "giant talking egg"... The design of all the levels... You can clearly see when you are in the end of your adventure by only looking at it... This was a real game... Nostalgia completed, just wish I could go back time to watch my big bro play that once more, at least.

My parents never had enough money to buy me a gaming system when I was a kid. But my older sister worked overtime to buy it for me after many years. We couldn’t afford to own the games outright, so we’d rent them from a local VHS/video game rental place for $3 for 3 days. For 3 glorious days, I’d play the game for hours each day until my time ran out. Now at 42, I make a mid six-figure salary and could afford any gaming system I want. Yet no amount of money in the world could buy me a ticket back to my youth and those simpler times.
Loved sitting down for a day and playing through all of Sonic 3 plugged into Sonic 3 & Sonic and Knuckles. Getting hyper sonic was like WHHHAAATTT?! Back in the day. No real difference, but fun.
I wonder how they can keep getting hyper sonic mode? When childhood time play i remember don't have such self activation mode... I past all stage through persistent play.

The boss of lava reef looked legitimately like Robotnik died. His machine exploded in lava with the window shield destroyed and then the lava cooled over it... he’d have burned alive or suffocated. We always see his ship eject but not there.
Always going to remember that game intro of Sonic jumping to the floor with Knuckles waiting there and the Death Egg falling in the background. First time I saw that, I was at my cousin's house. Good times!
The good ol' days when he was called Dr robotnik, Sega seem to have amnesia and now call him Dr eggman which was a nickname given to him by sonic on the Dreamcast as a slander.

This game was great, but insanely hard for me as a kid. Loved this playthrough, but wish it just didn't have as many of those tedious chaos emerald zones
Oh damn this takes me back, truly a blast from the past, Sky Sanctuary Act 1, it was probably hardware limitations but the way the BGA instruments cut out everytime you get a rings just adds so much tears jerking soul to the struggle of the story with knuckles half dead and that. Nice upload.
The bonus levels on the Star Poles is a chance to gain an extra life by beating the challenge, plus when you go back to the main level, all of the rings are respawned. That’s how it’s always been with the original Sonic games
This is the greatest Sonic game ever made, yes Sonic Mania is good but it feels like a fan made novelty with some of the level design being quite questionable. This is the real thing from Sonic and Sega's heyday.

maunty1984 yeah but the way they made the stages - they don’t seem challenging bc they’re challenging. They’re all one mistake and it’s over. In one of the stages, you hit a yellow sphere to jump over a whole bunch of red spheres into another section of red spheres with 3 blue spheres and a yellow sphere and you have to practically guess which way to go to follow the BS layout to go back to the YS to get to the next section. You can’t even see it until you get to the section. It almost a guaranteed “here’s a stage you’ll have to place at least three times bc each section is different and you’ll have to remember which way to go after playing through 20 more stages to get another chance” and one of the stages was almost a rehash of one of the BS stages from S3K but with extra BS and YS. I don’t know about the Xbox version but the PS4 version suffers from EXTREME controller input lag on these stages. Not anything like the genesis version. I struggled on the BS stages on the genesis but THIS is ridiculous. Especially where they design the levels to where it’s purposely sped up as you collect the few BS here and there out of the handful on the stage and by the time you get to the last few the stage is going by way to fucking fast for you to even make a conscious decision and it’s lucky if you can even correct yourself. Mistime a jump and your stuck between bumper spheres with no choice but to hit a RS.

To clarify everyone, Sonic & Knuckles is not the 4th game in the classic series. It's the second half of the third game (while Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (also called Sonic the Hedgehog 3 part 1) is the first half of Sonic 3).
One of the things I found useful about the Invincibility shield, as well as being Super/Hyper Sonic was that you could destroy badniks by running into them
Tails and Knuckles are fun characters but Sonic with his higher standing jump and 'magic' abilities makes mince meat of the boss fights. Has anyone played Sonic 2 using Knuckles? The end boss fight is very hard.
I used Knuckles in Sonic 2. Easily completing the zones until the death egg, were I had 17 lives and 10 continues and still lost. Knuckles's short jump makes it extremely difficult to get pass obstacles at times even when timing correctly.
Cianitris Khhours I can’t stand the BS stages on Mania. The stages don’t seem to be hard because they’re difficult and challenging, but hard because it’s oooooooh there’s a speed change, navigate down this tight corridor with red spheres everywhere and one wrong move and it’s all over! Or use the yellow sphere to jump then make a quick decision about where.... ooh couldn’t see the next move, too bad try again. Oh and see if you can remember the specific direction you need to go after playing 20 more stages. AND TH GODDAMN INPUT LAG! I always had trouble on them in S3K but THIS? I’m pressing the buttons and Sonic is just not moving at all but you press it too quickly and he’s all over the goddamn place. And the one level where you get a sphere or two and then nothing as it speeds up and you have to turn the corner - FUCK THAT SHIT! I absolutely DESPISE the blue sphere stages on Mania. Like just absolutely despise them. Even though I have about 4 left to finish, they just weren’t fun at all.
Old School Playthroughs The Saturn version was actually a quick port due to the cancellation of Sonic X-treme - the Genesis version was what was originally intended :)

God I love the style of the old games. The backgrounds and music are amazing and the environments are really interesting and motivate you to see what's next. I hate to be cynical but i really don't like the direction sonic was taken after these games

Tails and Knuckles are fun characters but Sonic with his higher standing jump and 'magic' abilities makes mince meat of the boss fights. Has anyone played Sonic 2 using Knuckles? The end boss fight is very hard.
I used Knuckles in Sonic 2. Easily completing the zones until the death egg, were I had 17 lives and 10 continues and still lost. Knuckles's short jump makes it extremely difficult to get pass obstacles at times even when timing correctly.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles was where it was at. Hyper Sonic, all of that other good stuff, you could even open up Super Tails.

Cianitris Khhours I can’t stand the BS stages on Mania. The stages don’t seem to be hard because they’re difficult and challenging, but hard because it’s oooooooh there’s a speed change, navigate down this tight corridor with red spheres everywhere and one wrong move and it’s all over! Or use the yellow sphere to jump then make a quick decision about where.... ooh couldn’t see the next move, too bad try again. Oh and see if you can remember the specific direction you need to go after playing 20 more stages. AND TH GODDAMN INPUT LAG! I always had trouble on them in S3K but THIS? I’m pressing the buttons and Sonic is just not moving at all but you press it too quickly and he’s all over the goddamn place. And the one level where you get a sphere or two and then nothing as it speeds up and you have to turn the corner - FUCK THAT SHIT! I absolutely DESPISE the blue sphere stages on Mania. Like just absolutely despise them. Even though I have about 4 left to finish, they just weren’t fun at all.

Old School Playthroughs The Saturn version was actually a quick port due to the cancellation of Sonic X-treme - the Genesis version was what was originally intended :)

one of the best sonic game i've ever played in someyears ago and the music about this game is amazing its such a modernism game which i very like it and its also a friendship game but also the music never gonna forget it its so action and fun sounds have i feel this game came out today but it almost 30 years going thanks sega for making our days i still loves this game and have enjoyed thank you
IKR and very well said. Retro Sonic games are so glossy, timeless and perfectly made with excellent game play. All anyone needs to do is compare any retro Sonic Genesis/ MegaDrive game with anything made in that same year and they will see how ahead of time Sonic games are. 🤩👍

Same here! I first got the genesis as a get well present from my grandma when I was little and the first game was Sonic and knuckles! I did however use to watch the original first sonic when I was really little when my older sisters played them.

@@RetroGameStream I knew I was right and No Actually Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles both Released in 1994 and Sonic 3D Blast Released in 1996 since I know that one came out Around that time I just knew that 3D Blast is the Last Sonic Game that Released on the Genesis Until the end of it's Lifespan when the Sega Saturn Released Shortly After so when I looked it up on the Internet Years Ago and it said that I was right after all these Years I knew so not exactly what you're asking

God I love the style of the old games. The backgrounds and music are amazing and the environments are really interesting and motivate you to see what's next. I hate to be cynical but i really don't like the direction sonic was taken after these games
