I live in this town. It's very sad what happened to it. Because of PG&E, There used to be 40 homes on my block in particular, but it's now down to 16. The school that both my sister and I went to is not only closed, but torn down. The same goes with the Hinkley Gas & Market.

Do you know what that building was at video mark 7:14 ?

@@SherylFanelli I'm not sure, but I know it sits at the corner of Hinkley Rd. and what is now Old Bakersfield Hwy.

I explored Hinkley in 2017 and drove by a lot of those buildings. I remember that sign “PG&E did it and always knew, since 1952” - except, it wasn’t on the ground like that.

It hard to imagine that a company something as large as PG&E could cause such catastrophic in the US and still exist not to be rectified or shut down.

Not hard to imagine at all, really.

Fascinating, but so heartbreaking. Thank you for sharing this video. I only knew about Hinkley from the whole "Erin Brockovich" hype back in 2000. I had no idea what became of the town. I've done some deep-diving and looking for more info, but there isn't a ton to be found. Just FYI, the link on the sign (the one that says PG&E did it, and always knew, since 1952") ended up getting high-jacked. It's not safe to visit it at this time.

Trying to imagine that house with the pool was once nice before. Family outside bbqing while their kids excited and swimming in the pool.

It's sad, but I think it serves as an important lesson as what happens when we don't take care of where we live better. In the west, because of droughts, water is already becoming more scarce so we should try to manage it better and part of that is preventing groundwater pollution like this.
In researching this video, I learned that PG&E also had the same contamination at Topock, California right next to the Colorado river. Luckily the plume didn't impact the river, but imagine if it did considering millions rely on the Colorado river for water

This community was once a thriving town. Its now a desolate wasteland. PG&E now owns most of the properties as they purchased them from the property owners which they poisoned. The only active business in the whole town is Riley's Place(The bar where Erin Brockovich took place in). We did not receive fair or adequate compensation at all. The plume is steadily growing and there are still about 300 residents still living there or that own property. The Hinkley School, Church and Market are closed down. The post office is no longer there but the old community center still stands. Thats where Erin Brockovich and Ed Masry held the town meeting to discuss the Cr6 lawsuit. Sad and heartbreaking.

I wish they would tear them down so you could see the beautiful desert landscape. It should be really nice after all these rains and the snow.

That's sad so many people became ill and lost their homes due to PG &E and greed. Some of the places were probably nice back in the day. Too bad we couldn't figure out a way to decontamination land and water safely and more quickly from harmful chemicals and radiation. Restore our earth to health.
