Exploring An Amazing ROUTE 66 Art Installation | Elmer's Bottletree Ranch
Explore the story behind one of Route 66’s most unique roadside attractions-Elmer Long’s Bottle Tree Ranch. In this video, we take a closer look at the famous bottle tree sculptures situated in California's Mojave Desert.
Starting with a collection of discarded glass bottles, Elmer Long Jr. created a distinctive art installation that has become a well-known stop for travelers on Route 66. The ranch stands as a creative tribute to his father and their decades of exploring and collecting in the Mojave Desert, reflecting both the Long family’s legacy and the spirit of the Mother Road.

I lived right there in the shop area with my mother when i was 14/15yrs old. We were driving to vegas and had our truck overheat. A very old man named gus lived there in a corner. It was much better looking back then. We were pretty poor, all i remembered ever eating was toasted bread with butter and cinnamon. Before we ended up leaving, i remember gus talking about moving to arizona, i believe. Never seen or heard from him again. Been by here twice since my 30's (I'm 32 now) still can't believe i lived here for awhile.

A friend and I explored Rice airbase in the 1970's. Needless to say, it was in a lot better condition back then. The runways and roads were in pretty good shape, unlike what you saw. We found 50 caliber ammunition not far off one of the runways. I took one of them. The gas station in town was open and maybe another business. Hard to remember 50 years ago. Also, just to the East is the Rice Divisional Camp. By the way I still have that 50-caliber bullet. Thank you for posting the video and bringing back memories.

Thanks for going there. My dad owned 5 acres there from back in the 60's. We went out there to visit around 2012 and YES, it was very wierd. We were looking for his land using a map that a local realtor had drawn up for us. Some of the roads that are shown on maps don't really exist. Some are washed out, etc. We did find the remains of some signs warning us to keep off of a religous cult's land, complete with human like effigys stuck into 55 gallon drums for bases. There are lots of shacks, but then there are a few normal houses too. Clean air and far off vistas complete the view. I don't plan on going back, so thanks again. I'm glad you did not get stuck. Remember to air down your tires when driving in sand, but your floor mat trick sure worked! Be well.

My dad worked at Kaiser steel when I was about two years old so that was 74, 75 and we actually lived in the trailer park that no longer is there. There was only one gas station, and one little store at that time. Kaiser Steel was getting ready to be sold to a foreign company we would have had to move over seas. I have old pictures when I was a baby. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for picking up some of the trash. It has become a popular spot and many people have no respect for nature. We were there a few days ago and I filled up a bucket with trash. There are other local people that help keep it clean and try to eliminate some of the graffiti also. Try the Jenks Lake trail. It’s fairly easy.

The motto I’ve always followed for exploring: Take nothing but pictures. Leave nothing but footprints. Break nothing but silence. In 100% agreement with you on the trespassing. A lot of exploring has a balance…risk vs reward. I’ve passed up on a lot of spots simply due to the risk far outweighing the reward.

SO I just managed put 2 + 2 together on something. That restaurant used to be a Van de Kamp's coffee shop. They had a chain of them including in Los Angeles. The defining feature these coffee shops had was their trademark windmill. The last remaining surviving in use building is actually in Arcadia California. Not explaining too much, never could! Feel like I'm aging myself a bit, but remember seeing this place as we would travel in our old station wagon on Rte 66 to Arizona to see grandparents in the desert and up to Utah, sometimes over to New Mexico. My Mom liked old places, the older the better, so we were introduced to many a "fun" adventure. Tarantulas, snakes, jumping cactus, old cemeteries ghost towns. Was thinking how these old places can be sometimes sad, but like to imagine them at their prime when we would look forward to seeing them year after year. They'd get older snd older. All these places were once someone's dream...they must have bern so proud to have a new business or home or a new shop or a new anything. The dreams are all gone and going. Was a throwback to see the old service station, my dad used to sell the equipment that they used to fix cars in the bay area. Have seen many old now but new way back then service stations. Appreciate your thoughts on people destroying everything they can put their hands on. It really is just incomprehensible that someone would want to ruin things that aren't theirs and that are memories of the past. I call them punks, but that's probably too mean. Appreciate your videos they really bring back a lot of great memories...little bit of longing for the "better days". Thanks for sharing your adventures!

Appreciate your video and your commentary. A really good view of something that people don't ever see, the devastation thats left behind due to shortsighted "environmentalists". I'm from Northern California, San Francisco and Moss Beach on coast and it always astounds me how viciously protective California's current regime are of the coast and the coastal environment and sea life and animals. The environmentalist screeching and shouting about the rules and regulations they need to put in place so their precious beaches are kept pristine. I don't understand why ocean animals are more important than the animals found in abundance in the central and desert environments. California, especially recently, seems to have a real and devastating problem with shortsightedness. They don't seem to understand their nanny-state measures have consequences. They never see things through to the end...the consequences of these policies they espouse. It's all about the money I know, but it's still hard to see my beautiful state being shredded and destroyed like the plastic on those ghost town greenhouses. Humans and parasites...the only creatures that feed off others, eating away until their own host (land and resources) are dead or dying. The greed and grossness of these humans who left all this crap behind disgusts me and it should disgust every other native Californian who holds their state dear.

Pristine? People are going to go and mess this up? I think you've completely missed the point of this video. Maybe if you actually watched it you would have seen what he's talking about. What a ridiculous thing to say to someone who works hard to show the reality of a situation, instead of candy-coating devastation. He didn't say where he was, he didn't give the road or the address...so who exactly is going to go searching around in the desert to find this destroyed place so they can go and destroy it? So go on with your bad self...why don't you get out there and do something good instead of coming here and wreaking ridiculousness on someone else's work?
