Love the camara views. Allows everyone watching to see how the boat reacts to what you doing!! Awesome video! Keep them coming! Thank you for letting us aboard!
I was living in Auckland in 2000, when Team NZ successfully defended the cup and the whole of Auckland became yacht crazy. I used to wander around the racing village in my lunch hours and was able to go out on spectator boats for a couple of the races. That is also when I first fell in love with super yachts. It was during the last America's Cup that I discovered all the TH-cam channels that allowed a glimpse of life on board these beautiful boats and I have so enjoyed this insider's view of race day on board with you today. Thanks for that.
I am from Canada and I absolutely agree with all what you said. AND...watching a professional yacht captain in action is pretty cool too. I'm glad I found you.
Thanks Tristan for your "input" on elders thought... I agree and glad there's still critical thinking amongst us. Thanks for sharing this wonderful part of the world!
Making way: vessel is moving through water, excludes drifting and moving with current, includes moving through water with momentum after engine stop or taking down sails. Has control of rudder and direction.
I really like the videos when the boat is going somewhere. There is just something special about boats under way, just sliding through water. Also, the camera angles and the explanations are great.
Just an amazing life and the boat handling skills are just inspiring. Truly fun stuff and a lot of learning about other places, cultures, and styles. Thanks!
love the video's. i am working on my captains license now. I also couldn't agree more with how the world has become to easily offended. i agree with every word and respect the fact you had the moxy to say it on video. keep the great videos coming
mmm foiling sail boats … always wild seeing 50+ft boats hitting those kind of speeds up close just wind powered. Helluva experience there with that berth. Keep it up with those beautiful drone shots ❤️
Nice to have you back on TH-cam as captain again , Tristan.......always enjoyed your videos ...... Nice to meet Alejandro to, really cool guy.... not to forget Morgan to of course...... hope to find a video soon to get knowing your crew little more. Cya from middle of Sweden. .... regards Dan .
I often think about purchasing a 500 gross tonne explorer yacht but then I would give up the maneuverability of my current 4.5M tiller steer all aluminum vessel.
Thoroughly enjoying this new venture content and locations. Obviously, your relationship with crew is building quickly and a solid team is forming!! As a long-term subscriber, it is enjoyable seeing you in this new role and interesting venues. I hope this has longevity for you as it seems to be a better place for your skills and interests. You have grown a lot since AWOL days!!
Great job Tristan. A vessel is making way when it’s free & clear, using its own propulsion, sail or motor or is assisted by other means; towed by another vessel or moving with the tide/wind. Hope that’s right. 🛟🙏
Cool to see AC prelim from a spectator point of view. Been watching racing that is getting better as they get bolder with the boats! Would love to see the view of racing you get. ( I can watch the video too) Love watching the maneuvering, can apply principles to small yachts . Making way , going thru the water ahead or astern , not drifting or moving in the current .
Hi. Very cool multi angle with the cameras when maneuvering. That's a lot of work, but it was very cool to watch. Thanks. And you seem to be more and more relaxed. Is there a learning period with the vessel before you feel confident?
Been avidly watching the Americas Cup preliminaries on You Tube. I think my monies on the Italians, Luna Rosa seems to be getting better and better. Very envious of you being there. 😂😂😂
Hi I do not know about the Itailians but they are good racers - the New Zands people know how to wind --but it is going to be a great race program: speaking from north Canada, snow tonight
Sailing Parlay Revival had a couple episodes in New Zealand a few months back with America's Cup teams featured. He even went out on a practice run. Very intricate, technical foiling sail boats. I had read a little but even seeing on TH-cam was amazing. In person must be special. Enjoyed the docking.
When I was a kid, I passed the USA boat for the America's Cup ("Stars and Stripes" was the boat, circa 1985ish) heading out for a practice session. I remember it was impressive seeing the entire team going out. Just as you said. Just really cool to see. Oh, and underway just means you've weighed anchor. Making way is the boat is going somewhere by propulsion of any means.
Another excellent video. I really like the multi camera views. They are crystal clear and really complete the story of your manoeuvres. Looking forward to the next one.
Yes, you need zero speed stabilizers! btw there is a hydrogen fuel station set up for the chase boats during the event. Normally it's pretty hard to refuel...
The way I think about "underway" is not attached to the ground by any means. So that would include aground, at anchor, at a mooring buoy, alongside a pontoon (which is ultimately attached to the ground) etc... You are making way if your motion relative to the water is non zero. That is to say that you are underway and under some means of propulsion; be it under sail or engine.
A vessel making way is a vessel that is moving through the water and responding to its rudder. This can also be described as being underway, which is a nautical term that means the vessel is not anchored, aground, or berthed alongside. When a vessel is underway, there is enough water flowing past its rudder to allow it to be steered. When a vessel is making way, it will display its stern light and side lights. If it is not making way, it will only display all-round red lights to indicate that it is not moving.
I'm not sure, but I would guess a vessel making way is one that is actively moving under its own power, whether it be by power or sail. So, "underway" is any vessel that is floating freely (so you cannot assume it will stay in a fixed position) and "making way" is a vessel that is actually moving in a direction by it's own power.
Was nice to see you in Barcelona. (you guys looked busy, so I didn't approach you, and my brake was rather short...) Maybe in another port at another day...
Fun video and great cameras & editing. This never gets old; every single one is unique. I have a thick book Nautical terms and references on my table so the so the urge to lookup the questions are real but w/o looking I'll say powering by different means. I believe hydrogen generation systems on bigger boats and others have to use special 10k psi cylinder tanks.
As I said before, you are so fortunate to be right in the thick of the America's Cup action. Yes, Mr. Bertarelli, the owner of Vava and the main backer of Alinghi may not be ecstatic about his boat's performance, but the boat is reasonably fast and not out of contention at all. I am rooting for American Magic, but I am very pleased to see that at least four of the America's Cup competitors are quite even in terms of boat speed. The matches seem to be all coming down to the starts or to boat handling mistakes. I hope the owners or charterers of Espiritu Santo are thrilled by the America's Cup action. it is great, even though it seems utterly daft to be spending around $100 million on a racing campaign just for bragging rights and possession of a gracelessly ornate silver trophy.
A vessel is "making way" when it is moving through the water, propelled by machinery, sails, or any other means, and has enough maneuverability to take action to avoid collision. Essentially, it's not just drifting or at anchor but actively navigating.
My understanding of making way is under their own power and steerage. The engineer getting chatted up was priceless. I wonder what she’ll think if she sees this video 🧐
Making way (the vessel is making way through the water) If Drifting and moving with the current (The vessel is underway) A making way vessel has control on its rudder and direction.
Saw the Americas Cup in 2022 when they were catamaran. How does a sailing boat with 12 knots of wind move at 33 knots?!! Some serious voodoo going on 😄 Am obsessed with Patrick O' Briens novels at the moment C19th Royal Navy ships. Master and Commander Russel Crowe movie based on them.
A ship making way is moving through the water. If it is underway, but not moving relative to the water it is NOT making way. However, let´s say your ship is drifting, no sails or engine on, and the wind is pushing you through, emphasis on through, the water you are actually making way. Since you are moving relative to the water you can steer the vessel, it doesn´t matter that the motion is caused by wind against the hull instead of wind against sails.
If a vessel has a considerable speed relative to the water, such as with propulsion it is considered to be "making way". Propulsion includes sails by the way.
These foiling multihulls are nice but I'd like to see a return to monohulls or better yet classic wooden fishing schooner rigs like the Blue Nose. They wouldn't be as fast but the seamanship display would be fanstastic.
A vessel Making Way is a vessel which is Underway and is being propelled by either machinery or sail. e.g. a vessel not under command may be underway and making way, or underway and stopped.

Love the camara views. Allows everyone watching to see how the boat reacts to what you doing!! Awesome video! Keep them coming! Thank you for letting us aboard!
Making Way is getting the lasses phone number. 🤣
😂😂👍
Making Out - next step into a harbour!
Keenan is demonstrating Making Way Haha
@@mrvertigo23 then on to making child support.
It's also getting ahead

Thanks Tristan for your "input" on elders thought... I agree and glad there's still critical thinking amongst us. Thanks for sharing this wonderful part of the world!
Huge thanks to the boat’s owner for allowing you to make these videos.
God Bless your Grandfather! He was right! And thank-you for sharing your sentiments also. Love your channel EVEN MORE!
A vessel making way has control with her rudder. Capt Chris.
The added camera views and the fact you were able to get the crew on board of being on camera makes the videos awesome. Keep up the great job.
Almost turned into an episode of The Love Boat! :)
😂
Loved your insights on the bridge and much respect to your Grand Father, keep the videos coming and great to have your skippering again.
Making way: vessel is moving through water, excludes drifting and moving with current, includes moving through water with momentum after engine stop or taking down sails. Has control of rudder and direction.
Everyone is on the bridge watching the race on TV as one of the race boats goes by in the background 😁
😂😂😂 great observation but the boat that passed wasn’t racing at the time. 👍
So enjoy the little stuff you do to manage the boat.
Thank you Robert and I’m especially greatful for all your positive feedback in all the videos. 😊🙏
I really like the videos when the boat is going somewhere. There is just something special about boats under way, just sliding through water.
Also, the camera angles and the explanations are great.
Welcome to Barcelona guys, enjoy and stay safe
Just an amazing life and the boat handling skills are just inspiring. Truly fun stuff and a lot of learning about other places, cultures, and styles. Thanks!
I really enjoyed this one, been wanting to learn larger boat handling, this was valuable insight.
love the video's. i am working on my captains license now.
Keep it up with those beautiful drone shots ❤️
yes but foiling sailboats is NOT yacht racing. Sailboat racing yes. But not yacht racing. Just my opinion.

Thank you for the great view of the regatta happened and the perfect Docking maneuvers.
This bow bridge is fantastic, like in a real professional ship...😮
I love this bridge. It’s a good thing I’m not the owner, because I would be hanging out up there all day, getting in Captain’s way 😂
You look very happy and fulfilled, captaining. Beautiful place.

Great videos, it would be interesting to see other aspects of the boat life, fueling up engineering etc
Great job Tristan. A vessel is making way when it’s free & clear, using its own propulsion, sail or motor or is assisted by other means; towed by another vessel or moving with the tide/wind. Hope that’s right. 🛟🙏
Great stuff Tristan, we enjoy your videos and your enlightened insights. God bless your Grandfather for his service
Thank you 🙏, he was truly a great man. He served in the 624 Squadron. I still remember all the stories he used to share with my brothers and I.
Great video Tristan, hope you all aboard have a great time over the next couple of months. Oh he pulled
The name you were looking for is Ernesto Bartarelli. His sailboat won the America’s Cup twice.
* Bertarelli.
Good to see you at the home again
Hola capitan muchas gracias por tus palabras sobre mi ciudad que es barcelona
Cool to see AC prelim from a spectator point of view. Been watching racing that is getting better as they get bolder with the boats!

Love watching the maneuvering, can apply principles to small yachts .

Loved the split screen for docking.
Thanks, enjoyed that.
A bit of extra colour for the Cup. 👍
Can you introduce the rest of the crew?
I think you watch the earlier videos we have met all the crew already
Could literally watch your videos all day long, great stuff, thanks
The end just made my day! Thanks so much. Hope it works out for your man.
Hi.
Very cool multi angle with the cameras when maneuvering. That's a lot of work, but it was very cool to watch. Thanks. And you seem to be more and more relaxed. Is there a learning period with the vessel before you feel confident?
Still learning 😎
Thanks to the owner for allowing the videoing of some of the action

Love the camera off the stern to see the crew at work! Great content as always!
Nicely done,,thanks for sharing this adventure,,😊
Enjoy your time in Barcelona. AC is the best
Love the quarter viewing screen... !

An awesome video. You have that stern in docking down to a fine art. pleasure to watch.
Bravo honesty
And info and and... Thank you
Need an update on Keenan on the next video. :)
We will! 😉
The multiple camera views are a great addition!
Having met Branson a couple of times, I found him a genuinely nice guy.
Nice multiview editing!
Yes, you need zero speed stabilizers! btw there is a hydrogen fuel station set up for the chase boats during the event. Normally it's pretty hard to refuel...
We got to see the Volvo Ocean Race from the water 6 or 7 years ago. Such a much different experience being in the mix like that.
Enjoyed your Bridge Discussions, oh, and the rest of the video was fun to watch too. Thank you.
Nice that you have three cameras Tristan,😊😊

Making way is the vessel is still moving with engines still on but not necessarily in gear and you have rudder control.
Hope Keran pulled !!! :)
Well done
making way = moving through the water, responding to the rudder.
A making way vessel has control on her rudder and direction. Either with engine or using momentum.

Could you go through how you setup/tune the radar and maybe cover balancing between clutter and clarity so you can identify obstacles versus noise.
Very nice love the stern Camera!
A big Upgrade in my Eyes.
Keep up the good Work Captain.
👌🤘🙏

Making way indicates movement either forward or aft… I guess I would also have to include leeway..movement away from the wind
realy enjoyed the video thank you
It will be fun to have a beer with you, with your views on the world 😁

hi there, there is a hidrogenplant in the zona franca in Barcelona.
Making ways is when a vessel/ship has speed through water and is controllable by the helm/rudder.
A vessel Making Way is a vessel which is Underway and is being propelled by either machinery or sail. e.g. a vessel not under command may be underway and making way, or underway and stopped.
Making way is moving through the water and with control over her rudder and direction
Like the addition of the stern camera. Been wondering what shenanigans have been going on back there.😅
Vessel “making way” is responding to her rudder. Can also be referred to as “under way”.
Awesome watch thanks
