When a teenager, March, 1953, in Copenhagen, I had the thrill of attending a Jazz at the Phil. concert with Ella, Lester Young, Gene Krupa. Oscar, Hank Jones, Ray Brown, Barney Kessel, and Buddy Rich. My love of Oscar Peterson began that night. I saw him last in Seattle the year before he died. He was physically diminished, but musically on top of his fabulous self.
I've had the privilege to see quite a few amazing pianists in performance, but of them all, Oscar amazed me the most, and remained thereafter a life-long hero.
I would have loved for him to have been my teacher. Such a warm, calm and eloquent man. My drum teacher used to know a bassist who played with Mr. Peterson. He told me he met him once; said that he was an incredibly kind and well-spoken man. Apparently he was also a man of great stature and had massive hands which allowed him to play God knows how many chords simultaneously (according to my teacher).
The gentle manner of 70s prime time chat shows...I wish we could revert to the casual respectful style of Dick Cavett. Primetime shows now often involve lurid tales of drunkenness or salacious gossip (especially here in the UK). This was a genuine curiousness that Oscar boiled down beautifully... :)
Oh My God. And Oscar is right up there with him! What an incredible video!! This is just so wonderfully educational, regardless of your musical level or if you can or can't play the piano, in what different kinds of music, all surprising and terrific, can be made from a same source (here, from a song). Thank you!
Oscar just doin’ what he had been doing his whole career . A true student of the game . Just humbly displaying that he was a mere instrument of jazz, and through that study and honesty, became the greatest, due to his respect and love of his forebears and peers . It is this display that demonstrates the utmost respect as an artist .
Any racist who ever throws the intelligence of black folk into question need only to hear the genius of this man, or Nina Simone, or Stevie Wonder, or Sammy Davis Jr, or Aretha Franklin, or Duke Ellington, the list is really endless.

An outstanding lesson in talent and humility
Absolutely, pure class.
How immeasurably blessed we were to have this astounding genius and his transcendent talent. He was as humble as he was singularly brilliant.
and Oscar Peterson was pretty good too, huh ?!? 😜
[ of course DC is still alive and well ]

Dick Cavett Show - where an intelligent knowledgeable interview becomes a master class in jazz piano. Unprecedented, unparalleled and unreplicated

OP apparently had very painful arthritis in his hands and it hurt him to play. You'd never know it. What amazing grace.
What a charming guy. I've heard studio recordings but never saw live shows. Oscar just moved up on my playlist.
