Dick Cavett has been nominated for eleven Emmy awards (the most recent in 2012 for the HBO special, Mel Brooks and Dick Cavett Together Again), and won three. Spanning five decades, Dick Cavett’s television career has defined excellence in the interview format. He started at ABC in 1968, and also enjoyed success on PBS, USA, and CNBC.
His most recent television successes were the September 2014 PBS special, Dick Cavett’s Watergate, followed April 2015 by Dick Cavett’s Vietnam. He has appeared in movies, tv specials, tv commercials, and several Broadway plays. He starred in an off-Broadway production ofHellman v. McCarthy in 2014 and reprised the role at Theatre 40 in LA February 2015.
Cavett has published four books beginning with Cavett (1974) and Eye on Cavett (1983), co-authored with Christopher Porterfield. His two recent books -- Talk Show: Confrontations, Pointed Commentary, and Off-Screen Secrets (2010) and Brief Encounters: Conversations, Magic moments, and Assorted Hijinks(October 2014) are both collections of his online opinion column, written for The New York Times since 2007. Additionally, he has written for The New Yorker, TV Guide, Vanity Fair, and elsewhere.

@@Bix12 Some do it so they can sit there and stare at the water, others like to hear the sound of the city, or the country, while some have to evade criminal attention. Jimi Hendrix was kidnapped at gunpoint and rescued by a gunfight with record company executives. I'm not just trying to be a trippy hippy.
Duke is the reason why 20th century music sounds the way it does. He was the one who kept coming up with new harmonies, new melodies, new ways to put them both together and come up with something new. And he kept pushing and growing music for 70 years. God bless him and his music. And also the many musicians who gave voice to his compositions. LOVE this man.
Ellington is just one of the composers. Debussy, Ravel, Gershwin, Berry, Davis, and on and on of composers that left their individual mark. In fact, you could make a good argument that Hank Williams left an incredible mark on popular music

That's actually completely incorrect. He had a lot of influence on the direction of Jazz, but not so much so outside of that compared to other composers. The composers that had the most influence on 20th century music would definitely be the likes of Debussy, Schoenberg, Webern, Stravinsky, John Cage, and Steve Reich.
for sure, I think if you asked the average person what modern/classical 21st century composer they like? they'd respond Beethoven or Bach, pretty pathetic
@@spactick Without question, though I would question just what lasting impact Debussy had on American music. Gershwin, yes, Ravel to an extent, Check Berry a bit, and Miles to some extent, though it's largely gone, now.
Ellington set the harmonic pallatte for American music, and did so for decades. He would come up with a new chord progression, and suddenly everyone else started using it, too. He set the stage for how our ears progressed for two generations.
I would put Him alongside Gershwin and Ives as the three biggest composers of the 20th century. But of course, that's just my opinion. And it counts for nothing.

As a drummer, a great thrill in my life was when (in 1973) Duke and his drummer Rufus Jones let me sit in with the band... and of course Duke was playing too. Got pictures or nobody would have believed me.

In any event, his mother worshiped him, gave him such love and confidence to be anything he desired and prepared him for any adventure he wanted. He always said his mother's confidence in him made him what he became. He adored his mom as well.
He passed away three years later from lung cancer. Such a shame he had so much life and vibrancy in him.

A class act. And one of the greatest composers in music. Duke's sister Ruth was my dearest friend. Thank you, Mr. Cavett. You had some of the greatest guests ever.
It was my privilege to play for Ruth one evening with my hotel trio in NYC. She and a younger lady came in for drinks and she just casually mentioned her name…and we played nothing but Ellington tunes for an hour. She was exceedingly gracious.
In 2016 it was my glad and solemn duty to care for my grandmother as we made preparations to move her into residential care. She was suffering from vascular dementia, she was 90 years old. It was a hard time, sometimes she felt like the powerful lady I had known as a child, but mostly she was like a cared but often truculent little girl. One evening after a day of her being in quite the fog, I went through her c.d's and put on a disc from a collection of Duke Ellington she had brought from France. She was looking out of the window into the dusk and "Black and Tan Fantasy" strode out of the speakers and this white-haired little old lady with nearly translucent skin, smiled with a gleeful glint in her eye and said "This is my music...." It was probably the most lucid she had been all day and she even did a little shuffle.
In her youth she had been big into that era of jazz, she was working in some comms job in the war in London and it had been Jazz that had kept her going, in the post-war she loved it even more and it was the only music I recall playing in her house, she once took me to watch Disney' 101 Dalmations and in the car on the way home she told me about Jazz music and gave me a tape of Shelley Manne and his crew doing covers of Mary Poppins, I played it over and over... I have her Duke Ellington c.d's now.
I can't even put into words how much this video means, to see Duke Ellington in full form at 70+ is such a treat!

I used to think the name "Duke Ellington" was too strong a name for any living man.
I felt the name was too heavy and no amount of posture or poise would be able to carry it gracefully...I'm pleased to say I was obviously wrong.
Duke walks and talks like a Duke Ellington in a great film would.
You actually see the sleep bags under eyes that’s when you know he was hard worker….. the idea is more rewarding than the sleep.
Mr. Ellington was a musical genius, and a gentleman in the truest form of the word. A national treasure!

Wow. I'm refreshed by listening to Mr Ellington. He's articulate and urbane. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. After all, he does come from a generation of men who had a larger understanding of things than the vast majority of men these days.
These old shows are much better than ones today.

@Ellie5621 Much of what Duke Ellington's wrote were variations on 12-bar blues, which doesn't require huge expertise with music theory or harmony. Where Ellington really shines is his almost-instinctive (because it's present from his earliest writing) deployment of color; as the great jazz arranger Bill Holman put it, "I hear Kenton with seven trumpets and six saxophones playing, and I know exactly what he's doing; but Ellington deploys a clarinet, a sax and a trombone, and I have no idea what's going on." Duke's mastery of color, and his ability to contrast colors to echo call-and-response between instruments, is why he's the greatest.
His energy is so mellow, I love it. And he’s right, creatives should be grateful for the inspiration in the wee small hours; I always fight it to try to sleep. Maybe I shouldn’t 🤔

I must say, aside from the crass nature they have him in bigmouth. They had the man almost spot on, in terms of how kindly he was how much he smiled and stuff like that. This was truthfully worth a late night gander I must say. As I was curious about him lol. Such a gentleman, really someone for anyone to look up to.
Jordan Peele does his voice (very well). But the real Duke isn't a ghost in an attic, he's out orchestrating a galaxy.
Duke was the fucking man. What a class act. Greatest and certainly the most important composer of the 20th century.
I don't know if this was the style back then or if it's just this show in particular, but it seems incredibly relaxed and natural.

One of the greatest musicians of the 20th century. In the same league as Beethoven, Bach and all the other composers who were on the scene more than a century ago. Ellington will be listened to and appreciated in the same way.
It is important for people who know this to say it as often as possible.

First time pure music brought me to tears.
Most hardworking man I ever read about. Seeing interview it shows he has great insight as a human being and it shine through people he ever worked with. He make sure the cats are alright, nurture them so they are fit to perform when they are touring. And that is just a wee bit about Mr. Ellington. Everybody should aspire to be kind to each other and be understanding so you reflict respect to everybody, not be tolerant, but to be respectful to everybody. Then you will have freedom to what you do best! And that he did. And that is actually the secret how to be happy. Spiritually!

It was hard for me to understand whether dick cavet was in such awe of being next to Ellington or whether Dick Cavett didn't realize who he was interviewing. I mean this is probably the greatest American composer we've ever had not to mention in the history of music. And Cavot was seemingly brushing off his statements
I have most of this man's works. My favorite is his interpretation of Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite". As he said of Tchaikovsky, "that cat was hep!"
