Was there a greater master of jazz piano than Oscar Peterson? I once was walking in the park on holiday in Sweden 1987 and I came across a free concert with Oscar. The only time I saw him live and there was only a small audience. Absolutely magical.
I have never heard a pianist so dexterous and at the same time so intellectually competent. He knows his stuff and that's more important than that he plays so well.
I know this comment is really old, but you should check out the recent interview with Brad Mehldau, extraordinary skill and clarity of thought. You should be able to find it pretty easily. It’s about an hour and a half and the guy talks in great depth, all the time giving examples of his thoughts on the piano. It’s a phenomenal interview, accessible, yet full of technical detail. Is he called rick beato, something like that.
Brought tears to my eyes again, just to see and hear the humanity of this giant man. Seven minutes in which anyone can come to understand the mechanics and the soul of the great jazz piano.
Wait a minute... show me all of that again like 10 or 20 times. I didn't fully comprehend it all the first time. Wow! What a brilliant and fascinating musician!
Oscar was such a cool guy as well as super talented. While some of the best players look like they`re doing their knitting, Oscar was like a rock star whos smile lit up the stage!!!
Ya Oscar was awesome. And DIck is still alive and well and still witty. Oscar lived near me for a long time when I was a kid, like just houses away and I knew who he was because my dad was into jazz , but I never saw him out and about even to get the mail or what not! Too bad.
A great interview -THIS is what TH-cam is for.

Wow! That must have been amazing to hear him live in a small place like that. He was something else.

Just luck I suppose.
It was in natural surroundings and
felt very relaxed.

Right, even in the first example. He knows (and then Dick Cavett realizes).

He was a Monster, listen to his trio with NHOP and Joe Pass, that's incredible.
