which is also why the meaning of the lyrics don't matter. Sigur Ros is not just listened to, it's felt

Sigur Rós is probably not a reaction that's going to draw a lot of views, but I guarantee you are one of very few reactors who have or will ever take the time to check them out! Kudos for being open to it - love it or leave it!

Same thoughts. I wish so many more reactors would give them a listen! Even if they don't like it, just the fact that they heard a Sigur Ros song makes me happy lol

I absolutely love Sigur Rós and it makes me happy to see you do a reaction video on them. Honestly i almost never look into their lyrics because Jònsi's vocals are just another incredible instrument in the band. They actually have an album ( ) without any lyrics other than Hopelandic gibberish and it is a masterpiece. This is music for you to feel even if you don't speak the language.

Icelander here, the lyrics are close enough to the original. We just tend to have very long words. Although when it ws translated that the boat was ‘leaking badly’ what he actually said was ‘skítlekur’ which directly translates as ‘leaky as shit’ so this was preatty-fied in the translation 😅

The "hopelandic" part is gibberish. He is not saying anything, just using his voice to fit the music. Jonsi is using this technique on a lot of songs and fans have dubbed it "hopelandic". Also, people who love Sigur Rós don't need lyrics, we usually understand the emotions by listening to the music alone, just saying.

Yes, this is a little like the 1990's slacker rock's stream of consciousness, yet those were actual english words.
Seeing Sigur Ros is a world treasure.

So glad you took the time to listen to Sigur Ros - they are definitely on the poetic side as far as I can tell. I know you love to know lyrics, but the beauty of Sigur Ros's music is often not knowing - they speak in Hopelandish (Volenska) which is a strange Icelandic-ish gobbledigook language. (gobbledigook is also the name of another incredible Sigur Ros song - I recommend checking out their performance with Bjork) As a non-Icelandic speaker I get the most from their songs when I don't check out the translation - it means you get lost in their etherial soundscapes and can attach your own meanings or stories. It's like a dream where what you're hearing could be everything, or nothing, or anything in between.

Shew this is the. one. Of all of their songs this is the one that gets me the most.
In 2014 my mother was diagnosed with cancer. 7 days later she was dying and I was still trying to compute what the hell was going on. I hadn’t shed a year yet and I didn’t know if I was capable of doing so because it just didn’t seem real at all. I felt so locked up. I played her this song while she laid there and I lost it I finally lost it. I lose it every time I hear it. It’s so therapeutic and releasing to my soul. I never knew the words and I never needed too because the song means something different to me than it may to everyone else. Sigur ros are angels in disguise.

I know how you feel. I lost my Dad to brain cancer as a child, and recently lost my Mum and sister. My sister loved Sigur Rós. I just laid in bed weeping while listening. Now I’ve found out there is a good chance I’m going to die, and I truly hope heaven sounds like this. I don’t want to die. I hope my body can survive, but the music Sigur Rós has created, holds such a special place in my heart soul….I just had to say I get it, and I am so sorry for your loss.

Man, I appreciate you doing this and giving tribute to such a masterpiece. However you do NOT interrupt a Sigur Ros song. This band is literally making people cry. There is nothing like Sigur on the planet, period. They're magically hitting people's internal strings like no one. Interrupting to comment is just killing the vibe, the feeling. Listen to other songs but don't, please don't interrupt. Close your eyes and trip. :-) also "hopelandic" is Jonsi's way of using voice like an instrument, there is no meaning in those words, it's just an angel caressing the sky. Thanks for your effort and please listen to Agaetys Byrun, Valtari, Takk (not the latest, Atta, it's just not at their level). There are true, true gems there. I literally cry on this song :-)

Hey, the hopelandic part that you didn't understand is a made up language which sigur rós itself made up and it's called Vonlenska in Icelandic. Some of those hopelandic lyrics are repeated again and again over many of their songs. I hope you listen to 1. Staràlfur(Original Speed Version) 2. Hoppípola(Live) 3. Svefn g englar 4. Untitled #8 5. Untitled #3 6. Sæglopur and a lot more from Sigur Rós.

One explanation about the fragmented lyrics is that at one point Jónsi sings "gömlum ára - sem skítlekur", which is translated as "with an old oar - leaking badly" and that doesn't make much sense. The lyrics must really have been "gömlum árabáti - sem skítlekur" which translates as "with an old row boat - leaking badly" (ára ≈ oar | árabáti ≈ row boat). So in the only place the name of the song is supposed to occur in the lyrics, Jónsi drops the ending "báti" and just sings "ára", probably because he thinks that sounds better.

The first time I heard this song, I wept. I had no clue what the man was saying, but I was literally moved to tears. This is what defines great art, and this is what separates real artists from pop music hacks.
PS: The lyrics are a bit off because it's a translation from Icelandic, which is notoriously difficult to learn, speak, and translate, and "Hopelandic," which is an entire language Jonsi made up because the FOUR languages he speaks do not convey the emotion he puts into his music. Sometimes $h!t doesn't translate, particularly when it's completely unique and original.

It's very difficult to translate languages truthfully, and even more to translate feelings between languages.
I guess music is a way to to do it, but even that works differently in different cultures.
Cultures are very different, emotions are felt differently.
Even worse if it's a made up language which just one person understands (Hopelandic) ;)
