Didn't have this on 8 track but I the day I got rid of my 8 track player & about 60-70 tapes I remember thinking, don't do it! But I moved so often as a teenager & in my 20s I was sick of moving everything. Should've kept it all- just for the memories.
They are a Native / Mexican mix. That is why the group is called Redbone.
I don't get that. Which is the Red and which is the Bone? I'm guessing Red is for the Native Americans, being the derogatory term is based on the fact they all supposedly have red skin. Which they don't! Just like Asians aren't yellow. Etc.

Back in the day, we never knew what the artists looked like until they did The Midnight Special. I remember watching this when it aired. I had no idea either, but I loved it then and now.
So true. We never knew until we saw them on TV or concert. Some record albums we bought would have pictures on tbe sleeve.

@@TheCpage66 I’ve been introducing my grandkids the oldest is 12, to music from the 80’s back, they all love Dio, I took the oldest to see Ted Nugent. She had fun though near the end it got to be a little much for her because of how loud he is.
They're Shoshone just like me. I grew up listening to these guys.
They were Yaqui, Shoshoni and Mexican Descent.
I don't know anyone that can listen to this song and sit still. Even my mom, at the age of 70, gets up and dances when this comes on.
Redbone was one of my favorite groups of the early 1970s. I saw them in concert at William and Mary College on Jan 21, 1972. They rocked the house. They were all dressed in native outifits, white leather leggings with fringe, naked from the waste up with breast plates and turquoise arm bands. They had a number of hits, this, and probably Witch Queen of New Orleans were their biggest hits. You can hear the Native American musical influence in all of their songs. Come and Get Your Love has become such an iconic song of the period. I've heard it in movies and TV again and again. I think the most fun and satisfying thing I've ever seen is Christopher Walken dancing to this song. BTW, I think the moustache is called a 'fu manchu', but I think this was face paint.

Redbone was a term used by the cajuns to describe a native american and european half-breed. The native tribes used it to describe people of two tribes.
The Red Sticks movement. Baton Rouge is named after them!

That was a form of charcoal on his face. Native Americans use what is called smudge sticks for purification ceremonies. They are bundles of dried herbs which they burn and then smudge some of the ashes on their face. Just like they would use war paint, they had other ceremonial traditions which were offerings to the spirits.

About nine years ago I did a cover of this song (vocal). One day I was shocked to see a comment complementing me on it, because it was from one of the band members, Butch Rillera (drums, percussion, backing vocals 1973-1977). That really meant a lot to me.

There is a great Native music scene in the US and Canada ranging from rock, hip-hop, rap, blues, country and traditional that people never hear about because it's not mainstream. Hugely talented people combing cultures.

There is a mustache called a Fu Man Chu (sp?) That is from centuries ago Asian countries ( primarily China) that looks similar to that, but this gentleman was the one who did the native dance, and that is "painted" on. (possibly they used soot).
You need to keep going down that '70s rabbit hole some of the best music ever! Midnight Special was something we all looked forward to every week just to see what bands were going to be on there playing live.

There was a song written by another Native American artist, Jim Pepper, the more popular version was recorded by Brewer and Shipley in the late 1970’s. The song title is: Witchi-Tai-To. It was more a FM hit, meaning that it was played more often on the progressive FM stations of the time line when Scott Muni ran WNEW-FM in NYC.
My Junior year in high school and this was my jam forever! (Is still one of my favorites). I think they are Native American & some Mexican/Native American. ❤

Have you heard of Snotty Nose Rez Kids? Native Hip Hop duo, kind of fun. It's always good to see a new guy meet Redbone - authentically indigenou. Others used it as a gimmick but were not actually native Also, great meaningful lyrics on Cherokee People from Paul Revere and The Raiders. This was in the time of those great Billy Jack movies I loved as a kid.
Chief Joseph Riverwind dances (worship dance) in full native, often. He'll be opening (again) for Aaron in Florida this year. The chief is the one who does songs like War Dance. Beautiful video. He explains what the dance song is about, during one of his live chats.

Don't feel bad. With The Midnight Special if you missed it, it was gone. I missed this performance until a couple of years ago and was delighted to see it. I've known this song since I was a teenager.

I'm 65, and this was such a popular song back in the day. Midnight Special, and shows like it back then, were our form of being introduced to the actual artists. You had to wait until a certain time and day to see them on TV. We're older than you, so of course you're "late to the party" - us older folk love watching people discover what we already were blessed with! 😊

You should listen to Babe Ruth the lp 'First Base' 1973 you'll hear alot of Hip-Hop influence. Especially with "The Mexican" and you TH-camrs should go back to the original roots of Hip-Hop.
