the buildup is pretty good, but the 2nd layer is to large and should be placed in crossed patern. the 3rd layer should be smaller wood. round wood does not catch fire as good as split wood. Large wood -> less large wood -> (diameter of the 3rd layer split in half is good enough) -> kindling on top of that and your OK.
Thank you so much! When the Chimney Sweep said pre-warm the damper I was like....WHAT? lol Made no sense. You explained everything well. Cool Bellows. I found one on Amazon.
while you obviously don't need help, i've noticed it easier to tear the end of the newspaper so its got more surface area when starting the draft. You want a big push of hot air to get the draft going.
Just watched the video, I have to say it is informative, but the singing is hilarious. It had me rolling.. Tell your wife to send in your AGT submission request.
I could kiss you! I’ve spent literally several years fighting my fireplace with what I thought were the standard practices. Yet it was always a battle and so frustrating. Discovered this video two days ago and have done two fires and it is life changing. Very low maintenance and now I can actually enjoy the fire with my family instead of spending an hour desperately scrambling trying to keep it going. Thank you!!!
My dude, this is the only way to do it. I learned about it from one of my comments when I first posted my "Traditional Method" fireplace video. I am glad it helped, and thank you for the comment and viewing.
I lived in CT for my entire life, and I have to say that I never heard of Pomfret until today lol. I had to look it up . You're never going to light your fire any other way whether it's your stove, fireplace, or fire pit, the Top Down Method is king. Thank you for viewing Robert!!!
This was an excellent tutorial! I recently moved into a home with a fireplace and have be learning how to use it. I was doing the bottom up method but my wood was burning too fast. I’ll be using the top down method moving forward. Thanks so much💕
That all depends on you and how long you need it to burn. You're gonna have to continue to feed your fireplace with wood. Once you do it a few times, you are gonna know how to time it and feed it. And if you buy those bundles of wood for the stores, buy you a chord of wood from Facebook Market and let it season for next winter. You will save a shit load of money in the long run.
Patty, for the fact that question had to be asked, I recommended that you don't light a fire in your fireplace. Turn that heat on HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. ALL JOKES ASIDE, NEVER LEAVE YOUR CRIB WHILE YOUR FIRE IS STILL LIT. BE SAFE!!! Thank you for viewing.
I'm from CT and I could tell you were too when I said to myself "This guy's accent doesn't sound weird. Must be a local." Thanks again for teaching. There's a lot of old 1800's stuff around CT. Not so much singing...too darn cold for that.
If you are referring to the ashes, nah. Just shovel it out. However, it's good to keep some ash on the bottom. My fireplace is ashy as hell, but i got this magnetic cover that hides the ashyness and keeps the draft out. This is what i purchased and it's great: Magnetic Fireplace Blanket for Heat Loss - amzn.to/3MzaK6C Fireplace Tools - amzn.to/3g0fH6O I hope this helps and thank you for viewing!
I've been doing it wrong, did not sing to the wood.
The priming is what I really needed thank you!
Prime the duct. That is a slick trick. It makes total sense though
Thank you for viewing!
that humming crack me up no lie lmao, fellow Connecticutan

Enjoyed the old Gospel hymns, thanks for this! Very helpful video. LOL
I am glad you enjoyed it. Stat warm and thank you very much for viewing!!!
Thanks for this! Just moved to a house with a fireplace and I’m learning soooo much
Thank you so much! When the Chimney Sweep said pre-warm the damper I was like....WHAT? lol Made no sense. You explained everything well. Cool Bellows. I found one on Amazon.
I'm glad it worked out for you. I put the bellow in the description if you didn't purchase yours yet. Thank you for viewing!!!
Great video. I’ll be testing out my fireplace this weekend, as soon as I buy a “sweet chariot” from Home Depot.
I'm straight crying over here. Good luck, you got this. Thank you for viewing!!!+
Excellent video, and very clever. I'm having an issue with the fireplace smoking and this method appears to better direct the smoke up the flue.

That is so true. Thank you for that and thank you for viewing.
Great tips there , thanks, where can i get a spark guard like yours ? edit - just found one online 😊
Thanks for making this simple!
Just watched the video, I have to say it is informative, but the singing is hilarious. It had me rolling.. Tell your wife to send in your AGT submission request.
I appreciate the love, but you know I can't sing for shit lol. I'm glad this video helped you. Thank you for viewing!!!

Wonderful Vicki! I'm glad I was able to help. Thank you for viewing!!!
Hello from Scotland Connecticut. Just moved into an old colonial. This video was very helpful, especially the tip on priming the flue.
That’s the most awesome trick ever!!! Thank you!!!!!!
You bet...Thank you for viewing!!!
Lol now I'm lighting my fire singing this tune. Also from a random cold place in Connecticut. Also want to thank you and your wife! 🙏🏽👏🏽 Mmmmhmmm
Shoutout to my CT sister. Thank you for viewing!!!
That Charlie Brown music makes it more interesting for amateurs
I use this method when i need the fire to burn for hours without adding wood to it.
Loved the music and singing! Lol! Another great video!💕
Cool fire basket!!
9:00 You, sir, get my subscription! 🎉
This works great for a wood stove also! I love how I hardly have to tend to the fire.
I totally agree!
Excelente el video mi amigo 😂
Good tutorial! I’m up in Pomfret Connecticut Heating with Woodi making maple syrup lol I’ve gotta try the top down one of these days in my woodstove.

I've never heard a bellows referred to as that
This was an excellent tutorial! I recently moved into a home with a fireplace and have be learning how to use it. I was doing the bottom up method but my wood was burning too fast. I’ll be using the top down method moving forward. Thanks so much💕
You got this. You are going to love this method. Let me know. Thank you for viewing!!!
How long can the fire run? All day and all night for days and days? Or is it important to let the fireplace cool down?
That all depends on you and how long you need it to burn. You're gonna have to continue to feed your fireplace with wood. Once you do it a few times, you are gonna know how to time it and feed it. And if you buy those bundles of wood for the stores, buy you a chord of wood from Facebook Market and let it season for next winter. You will save a shit load of money in the long run.
Very informative! I love the choir song. Lol
Thank you for viewing Eva. I hope this worked out for you.
You're so cool! ❤
Thank you Nathasha, and thank you very much for viewing!
Thanks so much!
Wow, great method! Thanks for the clear simple tutorial. We’re up and burning in no time! 🔥
Do you have to stay home until the fire goes completely out?
I don't know anything about fireplaces at all, but I wouldn't leave a fire in the house unattended
Thank you....I'm scared for Patty lol. Enjoy long weekend if you are in the U.S.
Tried this for the first time today. It was absolutely beautiful. Thank you 😊 Can you do a video on how to extinguish your fire ???
I'm from CT and I could tell you were too when I said to myself "This guy's accent doesn't sound weird. Must be a local."
Thanks again for teaching. There's a lot of old 1800's stuff around CT. Not so much singing...too darn cold for that.
Do you have a video on how to clean the fireplace in between fires?

Would this technique work with my non operational gas fireplace?
it's not worth risking it
