Starting a fire in these new wood stoves can be a challenge because of the way they are designed. This method will help your fire get going very fast without much effort at all. A simple inversion of the methods we all grew up using does the trick. Putting large logs on the bottom in a V pattern with the tinder and kindling in the middle then capping it off with larger logs on the top. Works every time!

Thanks for teaching me things my dad was never around to teach me. 😊
You’re very welcome. Glad we could help you.
So sorry, I misunderstood, I took it like your dad was never around, but he could have been. Have a blessed day!
@@angelagarris4924 No worries. Blessings!
@@angelagarris4924 my dad wasn't around. He left when I was 6 months old, and my mother was in and out my whole life. My Aunt and siblings raised me.

I have found a Heavenly Father in God thru Christ Jesus, His son. His love is amazing! I hope you know Him too.
I’ve been trying to start a fire for three days straight with our new wood stove. Had no idea it wasn’t like the older ones. Tried this and worked the very first time. I’m so happy!! THANK YOU
You’re welcome. Glad it was helpful.
This is the best video ever, never used our fireplace till I came across this video.
Glad it was helpful!
Oh my god thank you! I didn’t grow up with a wood stove so when I moved into my new house I would spend 30 minutes trying to get it working. This is awesome. Can’t wait to show my husband my new skill😂
Awesome! Glad we could help.
This worked very well! Same method for my north-south loading stove. No more slow, smoky fires that snuff out too quickly. Thanks!
Wonderful. Glad it was helpful for you!
Yo man! thank you for this tip, I have a similar wood burning stove. Great help! Instead of using news paper, and cardboard-I used one "enviro-log" and two pieces of dry wood. If anyone is reading this, it's a quick process similar to what we've seen here in the video. Only difference, more heat, and slower burning.
Thanks
No, THANK YOU! I recently had a small stove, just like yours, installed and you were the first video I watched to learn how to work the wood stove to get a good fire going, as I have no experience with them. Thanks again! Now I can look forward to successful fires this winter season! God bless you and yours!
You're welcome Vickie! God bless you too!
Thank you for making my stay at this country airbnb the way I envisioned it: with a warm fire! 🤩 After two failed attempts I typed in on TH-cam 'how to...' and now I'm writing this in front of a beautiful fire 🔥
Awesome! Glad we could help.
This video has been a complete game changer. Lighting fires for over 20 years, always had problems with back draw and smoke getting in the room. This method has fixed that problem! Thank you
Awesome! Glad it was helpful for you.
Really, really great! Worked wonders! The fire quickly warmed us up! Before it took us at least 1 hour to get it really going. Today it took me about 20 minutes. And it was my first time trying this method! Very happy!
Awesome! Glad it helped. Stay warm.
So glad i been burning through cardboard kindling and frustration with this for days and so glad to find this guy!
Glad we could help
Thank you, city-fied first timer. Worked first time I tried starting fire in our wood stove and each time after that!!
Thanks so much for this tutorial!! It helped me start a lovely wood stove fire in the cabin we're staying at near Mt. Rainier. I was so sad when I failed to set it up the first time using different methods, yours was the one that worked and I appreciate that you made this video, thank you :)
You're welcome. So glad we could help.
Thank you for this advice - I have had such depressing failures with my fires especially now my fan isn't working. The wood is not super dry and I can get it lit (used teepee and log cabin methods) and as soon as I turn my back it is dead. Used your method with instant and constant success - a really hot lasting fire. First time I have felt on top of it all. Thanks again.
You're welcome. Glad it was helpful.
Oh my gosh. I just moved into a space with a wood stove... and it would always take me forever... thank you!
You're welcome.
Tried this for the last three nights. Worked absolutely brilliantly every time. No fuss. I also leave a small layer of ash in the grate which seems to work as well. Thanks a million!
Awesome! You’re very welcome.
This is awesome! Fall is coming and we've had a few cool evenings and mornings and I've been having a difficult time starting a fire in my wood stove! I totally understand what you were saying about sitting half an hour and more next to the wood stove....AMAZING it worked like a charm!!
Thanks Sue. Hope y’all stay warm.
Again another awesome video and perfect timing. I was having so much trouble trying to get my fireplace to stay lit up and started.
Thank you Josie. Glad we could help. We were so excited to discover this method ourselves. It helped out immensely.
I started lighting fires in my wood heater like this but wasn't sure it was the best way. It's great to have my method co firmed. Thanks. 😊
You're welcome
Never had a fire log before. First time trying to start the fire I followed your steps... Voilà! Perfect quick and lasting fire. Thank you!
Glad it helped!
I grew up with no dad to properly show me and I swear with my whole heart I got this on the first try, the way you explained everything is perfect
Awesome! Glad I could help.
Just tried this method and wow! Works perfectly and the fire is ripping! I was struggling to get my insert hot and your video was just what I needed! Thank you 🙌
You’re welcome
You sir, have just saved me a ton of time. New to the wood stove and for the last couple of weeks it has been a nightmare. To the point I was ready to give up. Thank you
Awesome! Glad we could help.
So happy to have found you and this video. We just had our wood stove installed and this method will save us so much frustration. Thank you!
You're welcome. Glad we could help.
Ty so much!! I could NOT get a fire to stay lit in my dads wood burning stove until now, thanks to you!! Finally!!😁😁🏆🔥
So glad we could help out! Stay warm!
I had been struggling to get a fire started in my new wood burning stove. I tried everything! Followed your instructions and I now have a ragging fire on my first attempt! Thank you!
That is awesome! Glad we could help.
Looking forward to trying this tonight... just got a new fireplace like yours this month, and have had 3 fire fails already 🔥 🤦♂️
Hope it works well for you.
I’m so happy that I found this video. I have been so cold for so long now, but now I finally started a fire. Thank you for the help.
Glad we could be helpful! Stay warm.
@@CountryLivingExperience I will now.
VERY helpful. We had a similar experience trying and failing to get a fire going. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
We're in the middle of a massive power outage here in the Pacific Northwest. We've had a wood stove in this house for the last 10 years and never used it.
I tried everything yesterday to get that thing burning even took a torch to it.
This method worked when nothing else would. I really appreciate it thank you.
Subbed and don't even know what other content you have yet......
So glad we could help and that you are warming up. Welcome to the channel.
I have a Hearthstone Green Mountain 80, this by far is the easiest way to get a fire going in the stove I’ve tried other methods and this worked the best for me. Thank you
Awesome! You’re welcome
oh my gosh thank you so much hahaha. I just spent the 30-45 mins in front of it to get it to light like that and got nowhere lol. So thankful for this! Will definitely try and do from now on! 🤩
You're welcome!!
You absolute legend! I’ve been failing at this for a month or so until now. Thanks!
Glad I could help
After watching this video, I tried it. WOW Starts the fire FAST and brings it up to temp very quickly..less than 10min. Great video! Thanks for posting
Awesome! You're welcome.
Thank you. I am looking to get a wood stove. People kept telling me how hard it is to get a fire going. It seems you figured it out.

You’re welcome. Glad we could help.
Thanks a lot man I was at home alone and it was super cold but now I got a fire going thanks
You’re welcome
REALLY appreciate this video! Like so many others, was trying using the 'old school' method with no luck and lots of frustration. Using your method: perfect fire the first time.
Wonderful! Glad it helped.
Solid advice! Tried several other methods so was a bit skeptical. Works indeed every time. Thanks!
You're welcome. Glad it helped!
Yaaayyy!!! After hours this morning trying the old school method in this similar stove…I know exactly how I’ll start my next fire! Thank you!!
You're welcome. Happy Thanksgiving
Awesome video! I have a similar stove that you do - a small Napoleon - and didn't understand the principal of those events and forming a v. I also did not know how critical it was to have completely seasoned dry wood. Everything you say makes sense...and the fire started instantly. I didn't even use any cardboard. Thank you so much!
You’re welcome. Glad you were able to get it started quickly.
thank you so much for this tutorial.... I was pulling my hair out to get a fire started in our "EPA" stove... now I know how !
You're welcome. Glad I could help.
Great advice! I started placing the larger logs on the bottom and it has been a breeze starting fires now. Last season it was a total struggle.
Awesome! Glad it is working better.
This is great! I’ve laid my V and can’t wait to spark up. And no need for smelly firelighters either 💥
Awesome!
Thank-you so much for your tip on starting a fire in a small wood stove. I was ready to give up and was totally amazed how quickly the fire started when I followed your advice.
You’re welcome. Glad it worked well for you.
I recently bought an EPA wood burning stove, and got very frustrated. Thank you for the video, it helped TREMENDOUSLY!!
You’re welcome. Glad it helped
Been doing it all along wrong and freezing my butt off here in southern Oregon. Thank you for your instruction.
Glad we could help.
You have NO IDEA how much this is going to help us! We've resently moved to a snowy climate and old methods just DON'T WORK in our new cast iorn wood burning stove. 😭 THANKFUL for this channel! Thank you!
You’re welcome. So glad we could help.
Omg Thank you💯👍 It took me an hour to start a fire yesterday 😬❄️🌨️😰 Now I learned 🤣
Glad I could help!
This video needs more attention. I’ve shared it with many people at work who are currently heating their home in the Australian winter. Please make more videos on overnight burn tips :) cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
Thank you. I will try to make more.
Perfect...The fire is blazing now! Thank you.
You’re welcome
This worked straight away! I didn’t have any cupboard either. I used little sticks and same amount of newspaper as shown in the video. Great video!
Thank you. Glad we could help.
Thank heaps! I was sceptical, it almost looked like it's not gonna work but it lit such an awesome fire! I was proud of myself hehe
You're welcome. Great job!
THAAAAAANK YOUUUUUU!!!! Got it roaring in a minute with your tips after an hour of trying to get the fire going
You're welcome
Wow thanks we literally bought a stove just like yours a week ago! 😄👍
You're welcome
Just got a new stove, my first new stove ever! 7:38 I've always had junky old stoves so now you taught me the right way. Thank you so much!
You're welcome
I have the Ashley AW2520E. What a PITA to start. I found this video and gave it a try! Only difference is I used a fire starter and a torch. What a timesaver--and no more aggravation! Thank you! BTW, to clean the glass in the door, use the stuff you would use on a glass top stove with the scrubby pad that comes with it, then paper towels to wipe off. Another huge headache saver!
Glad we could help.
Thank you, we are travelling and instructions are old method and didn’t work … like you said, works first time. Life saver, it could have been a long cold night
You're welcome. Glad y'all are nice and warm now.
Best method I’ve tried! Thanks for sharing this technique.
You're welcome
Thank you for sharing! I just purchased a wood stove. Will try it out when installed.
You're welcome
Always had issues with fireplaces but after repeating the steps here it legitimately started first try. Thank you very much for this informative video.
You're welcome
Thank you SO much for this. I had a similar experience trying the old method on our new EPA stove. Got it roaring in a few minutes with this method!
You're welcome! Glad it helped.
We have a similar size stove and have struggled with building fires and keeping them going. I tried your method this morning and it started right away and is still going many hours later. Thank you!
Awesome! Glad it helped.
Wow can’t lie this worked instantly! I had been working on this fire for nearly 30 minutes! 😂🎉😅
That was great. I was getting so frustrated and wasting so much fat wood it was driving me crazy. Nice to learn about the new type of wood stoves which is what I have, makes more sense now. Thank you
You're welcome
We just had a new EPA wood burning stove installed. For a week after I kept building fires like I do in my fire pit outside, teepee style or log cabin, but would always get a ton of smoke in the house and would require constant attention for about 30-45 minutes. Tried this method for the first time today and was really pleased
Awesome
Great profile picture by the way!
@@CountryLivingExperience Thanks! Ron Swanson is my spirit animal :-)
Great tutorial! Definitely easier if you can get 2 big pieces in early. I find twisting cardboard into sticks is good, the air flows through better and flames lick round them, like a faster catching kindling. Split some seasoned hardwood for this winter but we burn through it fast and need more storage. Bought a stove thermometer last year and noticed it's better not to add extra wood too often, otherwise it cools down perhaps due to less airflow. Hopefully this will help stretch our supply a bit longer 😊
Thank you
Thanks for the wood staging advice. I'll have to try it. I also have a couple of suggestions. Instead of leaving the door cracked. You can try the ash pan door underneath. But you have to keep an eye on it, or it will overheat and damage your stove. Second, instead of a bic lighter. Try using a propane torch with the push button igniter. It makes lighting much easier, and it will last for years. Thanks again for the tip. I look forward to trying it.
You're welcome
why am i so facinated by this even though i dont own a wood fire thingy
Maybe this is an indication you need to get a wood fire thingy.
Thank you 🙏 🙏🙏🙏🙏I didn’t know how , because of you I will be warm for the rest of the winter
Happy to help!
You, Sir, are a genius! This method worked a treat. Thanks from Australia. 👍
Thank you. Glad it worked for you.
Thank you! My family decided to re do our living room and before, the couch was covering the fireplace. Now it’s an open fireplace and we want to use it
Very cool. Enjoy it.
It is possible to get a fireplace insert that make it produce far more useful heat than an open fireplace. Might want to look into it you are looking for a way to reduce your heating bills immensely?
Thanks for this video. In time for wood stove season.
You're welcome. Glad we could help.
Just tried it and it works great. Thanks!!
Awesome! You're welcome!
I’m watching my sisters house. She has a wood stove and this helped a lot! Thank you so much!!!
You’re welcome
Awesome video as I was also building fire log cabin way, not useing paper or cardboard . And not, leaving door ajar ! Tried it your way and no more waiting 15 - 30 minutes. I got 🔥
Thank you. Glad you got it started fast.
Thanks man. This methods worked for me on the first try.
Awesome!
Just don’t use cardboard with plastic packing tape on or colored shipping labels if you have a catalytic converter.
First time wood stove burner over here, first try, ROARING! Thank you kind sir! 👏🏻🪵👍🏼
You're welcome.
Just tried your method, works perfect. Thanks for the video 😁😁😁😁
Awesome! You're welcome.
Awesome thank you so much I’m going to try this tomorrow night it’s going to be a cold one in Utah I’m sleeping in an old school permanent like tent and it has one of these stoves!
You’re welcome. Stay warm.
OMG I Built one just like you told me and holy smokes that’s a big fire LOL Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
This is the best method ever! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you
Thank you for this! I’ve been doing it very wrong! This helped so much.
You’re welcome
I had been using the top down method and that works as well. I think that I like your method from the old English guy better. Thanks.
Awesome video. Just got our stove and it was taking me an hour to get the flame established.
Thank you. Glad it helped.
Success without fiddling around for an hour! Thank you!
You’re welcome
You really helped me. I was about to throw this out the door. Now I have a great roaring fire now and it works great. Thanks again
Glad I could help
We’ll be trying this later. Thanks.
You're welcome
Good technique. I have a stove like this, and find that on cold winter days there’s often a cold downdraft that prevents the first smoke from rising. To overcome this, before lighting the kindling, make a torch from a twisted sheet of newspaper, light one end, and pass that flame back and forth across the inside front of the stove, where the smoke has to go first. Doing this will start a rising flow of hot air, and when you light the kindling, the first smoke will follow that upward flow.
Thanks
This worked a treat! It's so quick and so simple. Thank you - you're awesome :)
You're welcome
This video was very helpful. Thank you. We now have a great fire.
You’re welcome. Glad it helped!
I wish I had found this video earlier. We had a fireplace insert installed last year (basically a modern wood-burning stove designed to fit into the firebox). I've had mixed success getting fires going quickly using the techniques I learned camping. Through trial and error, I figured out some of the techniques you described, and have been having more success. I'll have to incorporate more of what your techniques going forward.
Glad we could help. I know you will get the process nailed down.
I’ve been trying to impress my grandpa before he gets home!! Thank you!! Got it!
Awesome!
Nice, I use shredded newspaper and sometimes used paper towels, drier lint, paper bags, cardboard, toilet paper, and kindling in a similar fashion.
Cool
This video is GREAT!!!!!! Thank you so much!!!! I got my first wood stove ever and it was about 50/50 getting a fire lit, or smoking my basement out. This trick worked AWESOME!!!!!! Thank you so much.
