I work in the airline industry. Many pilots told me Leslie Nielsen used to pop his head through the cockpit door while boarding, and actually tell pilots “I just wanted to tell you both good luck. We’re all counting on you.”
I'm upvoting this only because I can believe it. Was this before or after he made the movie? I only ask in a clinical sense. I understand Dr. Welby was unavailable, due to a funeral he couldn't miss. I surely understand.

If it were me it would have taken dozens of takes. By todays standards this is absolutely not PG. Fantastic movie. People need to lighten up. This is comedy. It is supposed to be outrageous.
If I was old enough back when this came out, I would’ve given my arm & leg to sit in on the rehearsal. I think I was 4 y/o then. Now being close to 50 y/o I’ve pretty much done lost my mind.
And what always blew me away from the very first time I saw this movie in a theatre was the sound effect we hear when she snorts a line of toot up her nose and then cocks back the nostril skin for the full upward blast.
This movie taught me about comedy. What I love most about this movie is that it doesn't prompt you to laugh. They throw all sorts of jokes out there and YOU decide what is funny to you.
@@gbwildlifeuk8269 It certainly SHOULD be how comedy works. A lot of comedy will go the other route of shoving a joke down your throat. They can repeat it too much or linger too long on the joke or just explicitly explain the joke. Comedians can also take it personally if someone doesn’t find a joke personally. And far far too many people will take it personally if another person doesn’t find something funny. It becomes an “humor is objective and you just have a bad sense of humor” and “okay. Lets move on.” That’s not getting into the dreaded laugh track.

An unconscious pilot, co-pilot and flight engineer being dragged through the airplane aisle while the stewardess rambles on as if everything is ok. Love that scene.

There are two possible replies: 1) It's the same, if lasagna or lasanga or both of them. Main thing, neither nor was available. 2) Like version above, only vice versa.
The cleverest joke in the entire movie went overlooked by many: at the very beginning, Striker (Robert Hays) drives to the airport in his cab, and a man gets in. Striker then tells his fare that he'll be right back, starts the clock, and runs off after Elaine (Julie Hagerty). Of course, then he boards the plane and the entire movie happens. After the credits, we cut back to the man, still waiting in the taxi, looking at his watch and going, "I'll give him another minute," while the clock has run up the fare into the millions...
Strangely enough, I got that the first time I watched it. It stressed me out because I thought the guy in the cab really was waiting the entire time. The panic scene with the topless girl jumping in front of the camera relaxed me, though. :)

@lana lake In the original film (Zero Hour) the characters have an identical dialog, but with fish and meat, and the guy remembers he had meat. Compare that with the fact that Nielsen's character was also remembering it was only between those two options, but then he says he had lasagna... What makes it funny is that he remembers something it wasn't in the choices.

Airplane is one of those films that won't ever get old. It wasn't afraid to poke fun at everyone but at the same time did it in a clever way and not just for the sake of making controversial jokes. My favorite segment was where the main characters have just accepted the absurdity of the situation and proceed to play jazz in the cockpit now that was truly hillarious.
Not only is this one of the funniest movies ever made, but it's one of those movies that everytime you watch it you notice something funny you've never seen before.
It's unbelievable knowing that every individual joke, every small insignificant skit was choreographed. Nothing was improvised. And every single one is funny as hell. Some movies nowadays try so hard to make us laugh and fail miserably. God bless Airplane!.

At first, I thought she was Beulah Bondi - (from The Walton's) who would have been 90 at the time, but it was Nora Meerbaum. darn! Bondi played the part of old lady's, in the 1930's.
Saw this at the Glasgow IMAX last night, as part of their 80s comedy festival. First time I'd seen it on the big screen. I've seen it dozens of times but it still had me cracking up. So many brilliant moments.
For some reason Nielsen's deadpan delivery of "You can't take a guess for another two hours?" (3:32) just absolutely kills me every time. He had the most inspired comic timing.
Funny thing is no one in Hollywood thought Leslie Nielsen could do comedy before this film. He typically played bad guys and heavys. After this he was almost always cast in a comedic role. My favorite bit was about calling him 'Shirley'
Movies paced like this are pure perfection. And the fact Lesley's in this made it even better. Not many comedies use this route anymore where characters don't react to the outwardly things they say or do as if it's the norm. I love it thanks for the upload I'm gonna go watch naked gun trilogy now 😁
Interestingly, the Zucker bros. had another actor in mind to play Dr. Rumac... Christopher Lee!! He turned it down and later said it was one of the biggest regrets of his life.

anotherkat4u that line cracked me up in the theater. And I was extremely impressed with Mr. Stack's acrobatic flip when assaulting all those solicitors. He wasn't exactly a spring chicken when this film was made by paramount pictures - where I worked in production for 5 years.
I once watched this in the pilots briefing room in the Air Force while on alert. I was a B52 mechanic. The comments from all the flight crew and maintenance personal were absolutely hysterical. It’s been over 40 years and I can still hear the laughter! ✈️🇺🇸Great memories!
On TH-cam there’s a quantas flight 72 on True Stories where the airbus dropped suddenly and lost a ton of airspace and the pilot turned to the copilot and said looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue. Great line. Cheers Bill

This film is so groundbreaking. Serious actors playing serious roles but great writing and producing turn it into Complete farce. Nothing will ever make me laugh as much as this did.
I still use the "I picked a bad week to..." line when I'm in a stressful situation almost 40 years later. Surprised the scene with the old lady translating jive for the stewardess wasn't included.
One of the best parts about the jive translation scene was that the translator was June Cleaver. For its time, June Cleaver translating jive was hilarious.
Decades later after dozens of times watching this I laugh so much I miss jokes being they’re stacked and heaped on each other. I have my favorites scenes but am still amazed at how much I’ve missed while laughing to the point of tears. Tempo and stoicism make the one line or recurrent jokes timeless and a masterclass in writing, acting and directing it grows each viewing for me still in 2023!!!
So much subtle humor. I love that whenever there is a cut to the outside view of the plane flying, which is a jet plane, you hear the droning sound of propellers.
Fun fact: Lesley Neilson had never acted in a comedy movie before this. He had spent his whole career in serious roles. He was hired because the comedy actors they tried out kept hamming up the lines. They wanted someone who could be funny while acting completely unaware that he was funny. In other words deadpan delivery of the jokes. Perfect example: the one about the hospital ( 3:06 ).
@@fuscinula I believe it was Robert Stack who didn't understand "the funny" behind Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker movies while working on this one and it was Lloyd Bridges who explained to him that _they_ were the joke. He nailed it from that point on.

This will forever be my favorite comedy film. I can't think of any other film with a higher jpm (jokes per minute) ratio. It's like it was made for people with short attention spans like me.
Man-boy grooming techniques - don't see that in films today. Turkey has actually opened a "gay prison" for that minority of men who identify as totally gay (most men being sort of in the middle between being attracted to women and men).
This movie brought the long hidden scourge of drinking problems out of the shadows and into the light of day. And life got better for those of us who can't consume a beverage without pouring it onto our shirts! Thank you, Robert Hayes!
A good friend of mine used to keep a childrens' sippy-cup by his computer at his work desk. When I asked him about it he replied; "I've got a drinking problem", we laughed out loud!

The cleverest joke in the entire movie went overlooked by many: at the very beginning, Striker (Robert Hays) drives to the airport in his cab, and a man gets in. Striker then tells his fare that he'll be right back, starts the clock, and runs off after Elaine (Julie Hagerty). Of course, then he boards the plane and the entire movie happens. After the credits, we cut back to the man, still waiting in the taxi, looking at his watch and going, "I'll give him another minute," while the clock has run up the fare into the millions...
The passenger in the cab was Howard Jarvis of California's Proposition 13 fame.

Strangely enough, I got that the first time I watched it. It stressed me out because I thought the guy in the cab really was waiting the entire time.

@lana lake In the original film (Zero Hour) the characters have an identical dialog, but with fish and meat, and the guy remembers he had meat. Compare that with the fact that Nielsen's character was also remembering it was only between those two options, but then he says he had lasagna... What makes it funny is that he remembers something it wasn't in the choices.

Airplane is one of those films that won't ever get old.
It wasn't afraid to poke fun at everyone but at the same time did it in a clever way and not just for the sake of making controversial jokes.
My favorite segment was where the main characters have just accepted the absurdity of the situation and proceed to play jazz in the cockpit now that was truly hillarious.

Saw this at the Glasgow IMAX last night, as part of their 80s comedy festival. First time I'd seen it on the big screen. I've seen it dozens of times but it still had me cracking up. So many brilliant moments.

Funny thing is no one in Hollywood thought Leslie Nielsen could do comedy before this film. He typically played bad guys and heavys. After this he was almost always cast in a comedic role.

anotherkat4u that line cracked me up in the theater. And I was extremely impressed with Mr. Stack's acrobatic flip when assaulting all those solicitors. He wasn't exactly a spring chicken when this film was made by paramount pictures - where I worked in production for 5 years.
I don't care how often I watch this film it still has me creased with laughter and tears rolling down my face.

I once watched this in the pilots briefing room in the Air Force while on alert. I was a B52 mechanic. The comments from all the flight crew and maintenance personal were absolutely hysterical. It’s been over 40 years and I can still hear the laughter!

One of the best parts about the jive translation scene was that the translator was June Cleaver. For its time, June Cleaver translating jive was hilarious.

Decades later after dozens of times watching this I laugh so much I miss jokes being they’re stacked and heaped on each other. I have my favorites scenes but am still amazed at how much I’ve missed while laughing to the point of tears. Tempo and stoicism make the one line or recurrent jokes timeless and a masterclass in writing, acting and directing it grows each viewing for me still in 2023!!!

So much subtle humor. I love that whenever there is a cut to the outside view of the plane flying, which is a jet plane, you hear the droning sound of propellers.

Fun fact: Lesley Neilson had never acted in a comedy movie before this. He had spent his whole career in serious roles. He was hired because the comedy actors they tried out kept hamming up the lines. They wanted someone who could be funny while acting completely unaware that he was funny. In other words deadpan delivery of the jokes. Perfect example: the one about the hospital ( 3:06 ).
That's why people call him "the Laurence Olivier of spoofs", at least Roger Ebert.
They got 4 serious actors in Nielsen, Bridges, Stack and Graves so that the absurdity of their lines/roles would be even moreso hilarious.
