The one gag that got me the first time was the deploying of the emergency vehicles. The ambulances and fire equipment was de rigeur, but the Sparkletts truck, cement mixer, road grader, Budweiser truck, ice cream truck and delivery van had me on the floor, I laughed so hard. And what made it funnier was the others who were along with me to see it couldn't figure out why I was laughing so hard. Believe me, it is hard to explain.

Well there really is such a thing as being too low. Aircraft typically approach the runway on a 3-degree angle to the runway, called the "glide slope". If they are below that, they could touch down short of the runway.

I remember seeing this when it came out and not wanting them to land, because it was so funny I had tears in my eyes and didn't want the film to end! And I love how the brought in so many veteran actors who were known for serious roles before like Leslie Nielsen, Pete Graves, Ken Toby (The Thing), and so very many TV actors in that plane and in the control tower. Almost everybody in this film is recognizable from something else. Genius.
I always loved how Johnny is the only one who seems to realize he’s in essentially a cartoon world and is just having fun with it. Meanwhile everyone else is taking it deathly serious, despite how ridiculous every scene is. This movie’s definitely one of the all time greats.
If you've got the DVD, I suggest listening to the commentary track. They originally meant to have a prop plane like the original movie, but the studio wanted them to use a jet. So they turned it into a gag by having the jet sound like a prop. A little bit like Monty Python and the Holy Grail, where they couldn't afford horses, so they used the coconuts which became part of the lore.
I'm British. This has to be the funniest American film ever. There's so many gags one after the other. Most of them have passed on. This movie launched the career of Leslie Nielsen who played Dr Rumack. Check out the Naked Gun movies he starred in after this. Robert Stack was in Caddyshack. Lloyd Bridges starred in Hot Shots which is similar to Airplane.
Also, I was so amused by the duck that I'm not sure if this is the first time I noticed the stupidity of lifejackets when you're over land. :-) In real-life, a friend of mine had to calm a fellow passenger who panicked over not having a lifejacket, by pointing out that none of the trip was over water..
I'm 58 yrs old and to this day this is the funniest move I've ever seen in my life. The sequel to this was ok but doesn't hold a candle to the original. Leslie Nielsen was pure genius with his expressions, his lines and mannerisms. Every time I watch this I crack up and I've literally seen it thousands of times

Just seeing Stack and Bridges pretty much pioneer dramatic actors' leap into farcical comedy was amazing at the time and still funny as hell today. Peter Graves, too. And Stephen Stucker left us way too soon. RIP, gentlemen.

They usually say "No, thats just what they'd be expecting us to do" in movies when there are villians or enemies or what you would call them. But in this scene it's a dead serious situation where they could potentially save 100+ lives and he just says "No they expect us to save them in this way" kinda.. What makes this movie work is that they were previously all serious drama actors who never did comedy in their life. If you put a cast of real comedians in here, even with the same lines, I really don't think the movie would have the same impact. It's the serious tone and deadpan delivery of hilarious lines by serious actors that makes this movie such a classic.
I seen Airplane dozens of times, and many more of the 5 or 6 minute clips, and im just sure there is bunch of things I've still missed! Unmatched in comedy history!

My aunt introduced me to this movie when I was 8-9. She had to translate it in real time tho, because I wasn't good at english yet. So most jokes went over my head. All my knowlegde came from dora the explorer (im dutch and dora thought english over here instead of spanish) but now that I'm 22 and this is one of the funniest movies out there!
0:32 - The thing I liked about this (and all the Zucker Brothers films!) was that some of the jokes were just so corny nobody else would bother. Like this "Pouring lights" gag. It's such a groanworthy joke I recall being really glad someone else wasn't trying to be clever, sophisticated or obscure about their comedy. It was like some cheeky kids had been allowed to make a movie without adult supervision. Possibly because this is basically what happened...
I saw this in the movie theatre when it first came out. None of the gags would be funny by itself, but they were all so shamelessly bad and piled on so fast that the overall effect was a scream. The high (low) point: "The shit's gonna hit the fan!" Annnnd right on cue... SPLAT.

I know, it was like the whole theater was laughing continuously. Contrast that with the movie Platoon. Everyone coming out of the theater as if they'd just attended a funeral. ...Except for Leslie Nielsen in one of the Naked Gun movies (I think it was), LOL.

Robert stack, Leslie Nielsen, and Peter Graves in the same movie. Only one word masterpiece! They are all my favorite actors of that generation and to see them all in the same movie just makes my heart warm. Mission impossible is also another great with Peter Graves and Leslie Nielsen

I remember seeing this when it came out and not wanting them to land, because it was so funny I had tears in my eyes and didn't want the film to end! And I love how the brought in so many veteran actors who were known for serious roles before like Leslie Nielsen, Pete Graves, Ken Toby (The Thing), and so very many TV actors in that plane and in the control tower. Almost everybody in this film is recognizable from something else. Genius.

I always loved how Johnny is the only one who seems to realize he’s in essentially a cartoon world and is just having fun with it. Meanwhile everyone else is taking it deathly serious, despite how ridiculous every scene is. This movie’s definitely one of the all time greats.

If you've got the DVD, I suggest listening to the commentary track. They originally meant to have a prop plane like the original movie, but the studio wanted them to use a jet. So they turned it into a gag by having the jet sound like a prop.
A little bit like Monty Python and the Holy Grail, where they couldn't afford horses, so they used the coconuts which became part of the lore.
I picked the right week to see this movie once again...
I'm British. This has to be the funniest American film ever. There's so many gags one after the other. It's like our Carry On films. 😂

Most of them have passed on. This movie launched the career of Leslie Nielsen who played Dr Rumack. Check out the Naked Gun movies he starred in after this. Robert Stack was in Caddyshack. Lloyd Bridges starred in Hot Shots which is similar to Airplane.

Too funny. Watched this movie hundreds of times and that is the first time I caught that one myself. Had to rewind a hundred times to catch up.
Also, I was so amused by the duck that I'm not sure if this is the first time I noticed the stupidity of lifejackets when you're over land. :-)
In real-life, a friend of mine had to calm a fellow passenger who panicked over not having a lifejacket, by pointing out that none of the trip was over water..

I'm 58 yrs old and to this day this is the funniest move I've ever seen in my life. The sequel to this was ok but doesn't hold a candle to the original. Leslie Nielsen was pure genius with his expressions, his lines and mannerisms. Every time I watch this I crack up and I've literally seen it thousands of times

Just seeing Stack and Bridges pretty much pioneer dramatic actors' leap into farcical comedy was amazing at the time and still funny as hell today. Peter Graves, too. And Stephen Stucker left us way too soon. RIP, gentlemen.

JesusChrist This is one of the only gags I don't "get". Is it supposed to be a reference back to a recurring phrase on the Tv show "The Untouchables" that Stack starred in?
They usually say "No, thats just what they'd be expecting us to do" in movies when there are villians or enemies or what you would call them.
But in this scene it's a dead serious situation where they could potentially save 100+ lives and he just says "No they expect us to save them in this way" kinda..

What makes this movie work is that they were previously all serious drama actors who never did comedy in their life. If you put a cast of real comedians in here, even with the same lines, I really don't think the movie would have the same impact. It's the serious tone and deadpan delivery of hilarious lines by serious actors that makes this movie such a classic.

One of the best gags in this movie is the consistent propeller airplane noise during cutaways... on a jet. Genius.
7:06-7:09 is beautiful. I love how everybody was running to their gates, the “we counting on you,” and finally the sweat my goodness that’s me when I walk home in the summer😂
My aunt introduced me to this movie when I was 8-9. She had to translate it in real time tho, because I wasn't good at english yet. So most jokes went over my head. All my knowlegde came from dora the explorer (im dutch and dora thought english over here instead of spanish) but now that I'm 22 and this is one of the funniest movies out there!

0:32 - The thing I liked about this (and all the Zucker Brothers films!) was that some of the jokes were just so corny nobody else would bother. Like this "Pouring lights" gag. It's such a groanworthy joke I recall being really glad someone else wasn't trying to be clever, sophisticated or obscure about their comedy. It was like some cheeky kids had been allowed to make a movie without adult supervision. Possibly because this is basically what happened...
Things can get so good when you take the stuffiness out beforehand.
I saw this in the movie theatre when it first came out. None of the gags would be funny by itself, but they were all so shamelessly bad and piled on so fast that the overall effect was a scream. The high (low) point: "The shit's gonna hit the fan!" Annnnd right on cue... SPLAT.
