50" LG smart TV repair. A great score from e-waste! Here's how to replace flashing LED backlights 😊

  • As this TV is basically only about 5 years old and in excellent condition (except for being unwatchable due to flashing LED backlights!), I thought it was worth trying to fix the problem and save this nice TV from the waste-stream..
    It's a 50" LG smart TV model 50LB5820, but I believe the process is pretty much the same for many models. Also, something interesting I discovered was that the default setting for the LED brightness is 100% - and this can lead to them burning out prematurely. A quick online search shows that this appears to be a fairly common LG problem which for many people means the death of their expensive TV. Turning down the LED brightness is an easy process through the menu (settings) button on the remote and you should then protect your TV from an early demise! 😊

    Just an update on this TV - it has now been two years since this repair and it has become our main living room TV, used everyday for quite a few hours typically. I have the backlight intensity set to about 60%. It is still performing perfectly! 😊😊

      Good luck BS. It's time consuming but pretty straight forward 👍 Remember to check the LED backlight intensity setting when you are going again - they shouldn't be set at 100%

    The LED diodes are 3535 6V with larger cathode (-) and smaller anode (+). Could be 1W or 2W, can't say.

    Following your video to the T, I am stuck at the part where you took the mainframe off while leaving the LCD on the towel. I have the small screws on the side removed, but I think you mentioned something about clips getting attached/reattached, do you remember how you got the darn mainframe off to the red makeshift table?

    • @TheUltimateRecycler

      Sorry I'm a bit late with this reply! Hope you managed to work it out.. yeah, little plastic clips all the way around the housing from memory.

    • @Simion_T
      @Simion_T 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Insert some thin cards between the metal and plastic clips. Like playing cards or old bank cards. Then lift the chassis out of the frame one corner at a time. 2 persons are recommended fir this part.

    It's e-waste day. I paraded the line with the car idling for an hour for our free drop off. Got rid of 3 totes of boards. Didn't (couldn't) have to get out of the car as friendly men in safety vests took stuff. It hurt to see all the flat screens heaped into skid sized boxes. Hurry hurry keep the line moving. Never been any picking allowed as insurance liability kills all recycling efforts. So sad! The curb is the only place to pick these screens up. By then they are always cracked though they make great daylight "skylight" panels.

    • @TheUltimateRecycler
      @TheUltimateRecycler  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is such a shame that liability issues put an end to so much easy repair work (and sometimes no fixing is even required!). Too much goes to landfill unnecessarily!!

      Good luck with it mate! Yes, just replacing the faulty LEDs should work 👍 Remember to check the LED brightness in the TV settings once you are done - If they are at 100%, they are indeed prone to burning out! This TV is our main loungeroom unit now and still working perfectly after almost 6 months daily use. I think I have the LEDs at about 70%. Let me know how you go! 😊
