    I love the original PO49 version and have a few tubes of the Daniel Smith. To me, the closest of the mixes is the White Nights Indian Gold. It’s easy to mix yourself. I did it using Winsor & Newton’s burnt sienna PR101 with their Nickel Azo Yellow PY150. (I think W&N calls this Transparent Yellow). I also love PR206 (W&N Brown Madder, DS Quin Burnt Scarlet) which is being discontinued along with PO48. Bought a bunch of PR206 also!

    Look at all that Gold! 😂 TFS a great video comparing all these brands and including PO49. Adding the PO48 was just as helpful. 😊

    I squeezed out the Jacksons Quin Gold into a full pan one week ago and it’s still liquidy! Now I’ve decided to put it in my studio palette rather than my portable palette.

    Great comparison, especially considering how many different ways there are to mix this color, and now the pigment changes. I never had the DS. I do have a couple handmade half pans and they were quite different than I expected - like yours, quite orange and sort of dull compared to those made with PY150!

    I'm not the biggest fan of this color but lately I've been enjoying mixing qors version of it 😊 I would love to see you make a comparison between sap green, hookers green or indigo as they differ from brand to brand.

    I really like quinacridone gold, and orange as well. I have got the PO49 from DellaMagna, a handmade brand from Italy. I find it more earthy, less orange than the rest. The more similar version I have is Rosa Gallery's, the Ukranian brand, which is made up with PY151, PY42 and PR264, a lovely earthy tone as well. Thank you for your video, I have really enjoyed it.

    • @jennw6809
      @jennw6809 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, long time no see! I found out recently that most companies put in additives to make quins and phthalos not flocculate. M. Graham apparently leaves those out. They look funny on swatches but they paint out fine in real life use.

      @@jennw6809 Hi Jen! It’s been ages 😃😄. Good to see you again! Thanks for the info, I was not aware of that. But I thought the additives were added by the pigment manufacturers, not the paint makers?

    • @jennw6809
      @jennw6809 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@awatercolourist I'm not really sure, because additives is proprietary information to each company, and I guess we can only speculate. I do think each manufacturer may put in additives they don't discuss, to make the paint behave the way they want it. I heard Lindsay Weirich mention this flocculation thing in passing in a review of one of the many Paul Rubens sets... an older one that actually contained the elusive PB17 Phthalo Cyan. I think she noted it seemed to flocculate a bit, then mentioned most manufacturers put in additives to prevent that. And the light bulb went on about the M. Graham!

    Back in 2010, I bought both Daniel Smith Quinacrine Gold and Quinacrine Gold Deep. Both are PO49. I stocked up and still have a few tubes. Your hand made PO49 Quinacrine Gold looks like my PO49 Daniel Smith Quinacrine Gold Deep.

Your attention to detail is nearly unrivaled, from the paint selection to swatch form & labeling, to swatching from all dried paints to have a cohesiveness between tube & pan paints. I appreciate it very much and will be looking for all your other (and future) watercolor comparison videos! ☺️👍

      I have ordered some quin gold from a Etsy seller called Prodigal Son. They still have some of the original pigment. My recent obsession is Potter’s Pink, trying several recipes to make my own.

    Great video. I can’t pick one favorite though. I have the M. Graham version of Quin Gold but I think I like the smoothness of the DS version. I’d love to see you swatch a few of my personal favorites, starting with Cobalt Teal. Also, PR 101 - but the version that Winsor newton calls Indian Red and M. Graham calls it Terra Rosa. I love that color and use it often. It’s a rosy earthy red, not orange like Burnt Sienna. Maybe do Perylene Green and Viridian, and maybe Prussian Blue. I’m a pigment nerd so I love watching these comparisons. Thanks!

      @jennw6809 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I heard someone say recently (I believe it was Lindsay Weirich) that quins and phthalos are like that naturally and most companies add things to make them smooth! That explains a lot about the M. Graham -- I get this texture from quite a few of their paints, such as PY150, PR209, PV19, PB60 and PO48.

    The Roman Szmal and the M Graham are the best to me. But I think the White Nights, Jackson’s, Sennelier and Schmincke versions are closest to the original. The RS and MG are closer to the Nightshade version, which Daniel Smith calls Quinacridone Deep Gold.

    The new DaVinci formula, called "New Gold," strangely does not contain PY150?! It's PR101 and PY83. I haven't seen it in person yet, but their swatch seems quite orange.
    If you peel the Jackson's watercolor label back you can find the Sennelier label underneath, according to one TH-camr...

    Very interesting comparison. It makes me realize how fortunate that I am to have 5 1/2 15ml tubes of the original Daniel Smith Quin Gold PO49. Those of us who use and love it enjoy it for its lighter end of the value range because that's where its magic shines. It becomes like liquid sunshine on the page and it mixes so beautifully. I also have 1 1/2 tubes of Winsor & Newton's original Quin Gold PO 49, which interestingly is not quite as lovely as Daniel Smith's. I've never quite understood how two different pigment manufacturers can use the same pigment and it not turn out exactly the same. But I am not a chemist!
    I've got more PO49 than I can use in a lifetime, at least my lifetime, so I keep telling my daughter that she has to start painting in watercolor! LOL. It's actually her fault because she knew how I loved the DS PO49 so when she learned it was becoming extinct she bought me a bunch of tubes for Christmas, along with 4 tubes of Daniel Smith's original New Gamboge made from PY153, which is also an absolutely gorgeous color. The PY153 is also now extinct and DS's new formula for New Gamboge is PY 97, PY 110, but it's not as beautiful as the PY153.
    I'm curious...what is your experience with New Gamboge. I love it!

    • @MinaDoesArtStuff
      @MinaDoesArtStuff  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s funny cause I have also heard py153 is extinct but I know Sennelier and some other brands still use that pigment in their paints so I don’t know where they are getting their secret supply of pigment from

    I like my Quin Gold to GLOW..So, even my handmade PO49 I add a touch of PY150.
    Greens..if you like Holy Halo’s around your natural green? 😂. PB33 + PO49 + a touch of PY150 (OR I got a similar result from my M Graham hue). Absolutely stunning green..almost always dries with a glowy halo…that I haven’t quite figured out how to work it into a painting

    Thank you for sharing! I have meant to get the Quin Rust for a while but think I will actually go with Rembrandt now. I already had Daniel Smith but it looks underwhelming in comparison. I think also Teoh Yi Chie showed in his Jackson's video that actually they are in Sennelier printed tubes. I think they will never say anything official so that is as good a confirmation as you can get but it is pretty damning! th-cam.com/video/bVSVuMfiGzw/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=TeohYiChie

      I don't think it's a negative that Jackson's watercolor is private label Sennelier, it's well known and common practice for retailers to use a paint manufacturer to make their paints, and usually it's similar to or customized versions of the manufacturer's paint lines.

      By numbers do you mean pigment information? Because I feel that understanding pigment info is important when comparing brands that use variations in pigments when formulating a colour
