You are amazing and inspiring. I found your video looking into boat living. I’m preparing to start a land journey with almost nothing. Writing music. Thanks for sharing your story!
Congratulations on your boat, your hopes and your efforts. The Alberg 30 was my first inboard sailboat and I lived aboard it from 1975 until 1983 until I got married and started a family. The thing that I loved about living aboard was that I could come home from work and hop on the boat and be gone in just a few minutes. The winters of 75-76 and 76-77 were the worst years in history for the Chesapeake Bay. I was frozen in from January 1st until the end of April, both years. I decided that I didn't want to live through another winter up there, so headed out for Florida. I ran out of money in Daytona Beach and have been here ever since. But, I have gone lots of places in other people's boats, making deliveries as far north as Canada and around the gulf coast, plus the Bahamas, and have raced to Bermuda on the last race sponsored by the yacht club here in Daytona. Since then, they inaugurated the Gulf Streamer Race, which runs every even numbered year, form Daytona to Charleston. But back to your boat. Maybe the previous owner told you this, but in case he didn't, Alberg 30's and other similar modified full-keel boats with long overhangs don't beat to weather in choppy or large seas, but they do great if you crack off (called footing) the genoa until the leech is 4"-6" off the shrouds, and, if you make sure that anything heavy is stowed somewhere between the mast and the companionway. The stowage issue is standard on all boats. The heavier the ends, the more the boat hobby horses and just stops or slows way down in a chop. If you have the Atomic Bomb for an engine, make sure that you put a little Marvel Magic Mystery oil in the oil and in the fuel, because they have a tendency to get sticky valves and have only two crankshaft bearings instead of 4. If you have a diesel, you're lucky. Lastly, please, please, please take the Coast Guard Auxiliary or Power Squadron classes (they are virtually identical, or at least were when I took them in the '60's) because, not only will they teach you the rules of the road, but they will teach you coast piloting and chart plotting. On the last 3 deliveries I made, the electronic navigation systems stopped working, and, if I didn't know how to get from where I was to where I wanted to go, things would not have gone well. While you are in Key West, see if you can get someone to swing your compass. My delivery to Canada had a compass that was 42 degrees wrong, and most boaters think that GPS is the answer to all their navigational cares, so they don't bother to make sure that their compasses are accurate. With all the commercial activity in Key West, hopefully you can find someone to do this so that you can then use a chart and have confidence that you are going pretty close to where the compass says you are going. And, practice that skill. Just turn the GPS or the Chart Plotter off and test yourself regularly. One of the problems with chart plotters is that you lose valuable detailed information if you zoom out, and you can't tell what's coming next if you zoom in. Good luck and have fun!

I also left from Port Charlotte March last year in a 30ft. Some local dude fishing by the lock was screaming at me for trying to go through solo like there was something wrong with that but i didn't care and it worked out fine. Kind of amazing all the fishing bouys to dodge going south on the Gulf and how shallow it was even 40 miles out from shore. I went down to Marathon in 4 days from PC., then through the 7 mile bridge and on up to NJ. I'll be watching for your next VLOG 👍.
It'll sell fast the snoots from up North are chasing out the natives as we're all selling out to move atta this place it ain't what it once was NOT EVEN CLOSE!
When I was 17 (summer of 1974) I woke up one day and realized I had never been west. In 1 week I was on my Norton 750 Commando fastback going from NJ to CA. It took all summer and in the end I broke down in Glendale AZ sold the bike and got home in time to finish High School. I was not the typical biker, I worked 20-30 hours per week and was a straight A student. But I always had an adventurous spirit mostly because I would spend my summers in Newfoundland with my mother side of the family. One funny note a teacher asked the class what we did during the summer. When I told her she thought I was making it up. My friends and mom let her know it was true. I got my engineering degree and have traveled to 20 different countries about 15 work related. My retirement will start in June 2024 (67 1/2) and I am not sure what I will do for adventure. Maybe sail my boat to the north channel (I live in Cleveland OH) an Erie Canal trip and do some winter camping. I have been married for 40 years (same women) have 3 grown boys and still found time to do fun outdoors stuff. My wife does not have an adventurous spirit but she does not stop me from having fun.
@@OffgridOceanLife Since you are new to sailing I would recommend you practice some heave weather sailing. What I do is to go our just after a front has passed This way the wind and waves are still high but each hour the weather will get better. Do this in an area where you can quickly take shelter just in case you have a problem. The last time I did this a second front came in and after fighting for 4 hours I was done and had to hide behind ballast island (Lake Erie) for the night. It was on an Alacrity 19 with just a small electric trolling motor which I sold a few years ago. At my age 4 hours is my limit for heavy weather sailing. You may wonder why I did not just heave too. Well I was around the Islands in Lake Erie and the wind and waves kept changing direction. If I was in open water I would heaved too maybe also with a drogue. Remember the Roman Legion Motto "Practice like war so war is like practice"
@@genglandoh yea thanks for the tips, it’s been a out a year of living on board now, I’ve sailed through some crazy stuff, jst sucks I never get it on tape cause I’m more worried about my life hahs
The sailing video life might not be the easiest way to make a buck. There are a few channels that make bank - La Vagabond, Delos, Zatara, and a few others, but most don't make much. The top 20 channels are Rock Stars. It is tough to compete with those channels. We will be finishing our Circumnavigation in a few months. We will party like rock stars in St Thomas February 17th to celebrate our circumnavigation. If you would like to share some sea stories , try to stop by. I wish you the best of luck in your dreams, sail on brother! Don't think in any way I am saying to stop making videos. I am saying continue, work on your video making craft, create your brand, and live by it. Become the brand, but don't try to be Riley, just be the best you, you can be, and be happy. You will find your audience. Fair Winds
True, you do not need much out there, right up until you run out of food, or god forbid, Something major breaks on your boat, Trust me god cannot help with that, But money sure can, a lot of people sail on a shoestring budget, But nobody can survive without any budget! Hope for the best, of course, but prepare for the worst, and you will not go far wrong, Fair winds young man.
@@roberttalley2404 ehh yea I dunno about the loan, you’ll have no way to pay it back. Maybe just get a job 20-25 and hour with 70-80 hours a week and you’ll get there quick

Not just when you’re talking, but also the ocean sounds while you’re moving along and doing things. 💜💜💜 @adventurecreatorpodcast

Damn how did you come up with 48k?? Lol but he'll yeah man, I'm going to save for the next 2yrs and do the same. Think I'll start in the med though. Fly there. Spend some time backpacking and buying a cheap boat there.
Took a few years, jst kept dreaming about the life and it kept me going haha that’s what’s up though that your trying to take the plunge to. My next video is actually “how I quit my job to travel the world”
I really hope this works out man keep it up. My only advice on the video is if you are recording for TH-cam make sure to keep the phone on its side to get the full view. Other than that the content will be good as other people will live through your journey.
Congrats with your boat and decision to live that lifestyle. You know you can earn a living by using your boat to take tourists for short charter trips in the harbours you visit. Something boat related.. You are a young man. You could learn some skills to offer services to other sailors while in port. Spend some time on shore and get someone to teach you. For example sail repairs, upholstry, or anything boat related that may earn you some money. Just a small tip from me to keep you afloat financially. Good luck and fair winds.
You can make it happen if you want to. There are several ways to earn a living while sailing, it is a question of abilities and imagination. Hang in there. Good luck and fair winds.
@@OffgridOceanLife better that than becalmed I guess. Extremely;y impressed that you have chosen to do this. I wish I had had the guts to do the same when younger, enjoy the adventures !
Not sure what your using to shoot the video but hopefully you will get more wind and eventually you'll want to get a windmuff - ie something to put over your microphone so that you have decent sound when it's blowing out. You may want to get GoogleFi to save money on phone bill.

All alone...🤯😳 I admire your strength.
Omg the buoys were driving me nuts.everytime I looked forward I was about to go over one lol ..thanks.appre iate the support
Be your best you! Congrats!
New sub, good luck 👍 will be waiting for more videos 📹 😊
Appreciate the sub more than you know :)
WoW living the dream I'm doing the same thing I'm at the point of selling my house hopefully it will sell fast...I live in Tampa Bay, FL
It'll sell fast the snoots from up North are chasing out the natives as we're all selling out to move atta this place it ain't what it once was NOT EVEN CLOSE!
Greetings from Ft Myers
Hey man, I’m not far from there at all I’m in Charlotte harbor :)
I subscribed. You seem sincere.
Thanks I really appreciate it,more than you know
Love the channel. Keep at it!❤
Thanks for the support. I’m to stubborn to stop it :)
New suscriber here! This was great. I wish you the best.
sweet thanks for the support
I like the video, its great to see real.
Awesome :) thanks for the comment
Hahaha that’s awesome man, and people are saying I’m the inspiration. I love it. Let me know if your ever around :)
@@OffgridOceanLife Since you are new to sailing I would recommend you practice some heave weather sailing.
What I do is to go our just after a front has passed
This way the wind and waves are still high but each hour the weather will get better.
Good luck guy. Keep the camera going!
Haha yeaa it’s a tough habit but I’ll get it. Thanks man :)
Cheers !
Please do a boat tour. Interested to see what you spent 45k on.
Next episode I’ve got it commin :) I spent half of that on the actual boat though, the rest was to make it self sufficient and dive/fish gear mostly
I'm 62 getting my sailboat next week I'm a late starter but looking forward to killing it. No experience just giving it a go
That’s the way to do it,only got one life. I hope u have as many good times as I have
Pimp!! Gotta have a GPS!!! #1!!! Storms/ships!! PIRATES!!!
U mean ais? I have gps but I’m going broke out here lol
Im just saving up to get started in 12 months for the same thing👍🏻
Niice. You’ll love it it’s amazing out here
Good for you. New sub.
Heyy thanks man :)
I have been seriously considering doing the same thing you are doing, but I don't have almost 50K to drop on getting a good sail boat up and running.
Not even if you sell everything you own, cars house furniture tools?
I bought my sailboat at the top of the market to, u can get a good old one for 15k now
@@OffgridOceanLife I would have to take a loan out, my car is an old beater worth about 1k and I have never owned my own house
@@roberttalley2404 ehh yea I dunno about the loan, you’ll have no way to pay it back. Maybe just get a job 20-25 and hour with 70-80 hours a week and you’ll get there quick
Happy Sailing
Thanks man :)
Yes bro!! Can’t wait for more content
yoo thanks man :)
I would keep your camera horizontal. Vertical is normally just used for shorts. You're a handsome young man (I'm guessing about the age of some of my kids). I am sure your videos will do well. Good luck. - Cheri'
Where were you before I put this out lol.i fixed it for the second episode next week though thanks haha. I'm a lil older than most people think, 34
So I guessed right then. My oldest son was born in June of 1989. Your videos will get better as you get more experience. We all are learning.@@OffgridOceanLife
That golden tan though!
Good luck man. I’ll be waiting for other vids man
Thanx for the support man
Fair winds!
Live life and be happy.
That’s the goal :)
Hey, good videos man. Watched them all. I have the same boat and am going to be doing something similar to you soon. Wondering if you could talk more about your sailing experience. Know you touched on it in one of these videos but can you talk more about being new to sailing. Has it been a hinderance that you are learning as you go? Any safety concerns so far? Any advice?
Thanks for the awesome comment and feedback , illl put more of that in,id say just make sure you have a big anchor and itll ease your mind alot.ive dragged a few times and thats probly the worst part for me
I wish I was with you!
Man you are awesome!
Haha thanks, better start working on getting a boat :)
Good luck man! Sing out if there’s any topic I can address in my newsletter or podcast to help your creator journey! This is definitely not a bad start, and don’t be so hard on yourself. You come across as super authentic, which will be key. My advice to start: pay attention to the audio experience. Not just when you’re talking, but also the ocean sounds while you’re moving along and doing things. 💜💜💜
@adventurecreatorpodcast
Honestly just your positive view helps me a lot..there's a lot of people that are nothing but negative towards what I'm doing I could use some positive
@@OffgridOceanLife I’m always up for sharing some positivity, but brace yourself, it gets worse, but also better. It’s amazing watching your community grow. 💜
Thanks,I'm gonna be putting everything I got into these videos and I'm annoyingly persistent so hopefully they should take off
Good luck
Thanks I need it lol
@@OffgridOceanLife you got it. I’m going to look at a boat today. I need a little luck as well. You are already out there.
looking forwed to how you get on.
remember your golis
Yeaa it’s gonna be a hell of a journey :) thanks for the support
Reminds me of Adventure of Tarka, adventure stopped where carribbean sea stopped.
new subscriber here.
Awesome it means a lot to me :)
You need a pet monkey or dog or something to help pass the time ! They help you sleep better also ! You must have paid around 40k for that vessel ! A tour would be cool ! Oh and im a new subscriber
Haha yeaaa I was thinking about a pet of some sort, I paid 25k for it :) and I’ve got a little boat tour on my second episode if you wanna check it out
Damn how did you come up with 48k?? Lol but he'll yeah man, I'm going to save for the next 2yrs and do the same. Think I'll start in the med though. Fly there. Spend some time backpacking and buying a cheap boat there.
Took a few years, jst kept dreaming about the life and it kept me going haha that’s what’s up though that your trying to take the plunge to. My next video is actually “how I quit my job to travel the world”
Turn the camera round so everything is full screen. That’s helpful.
Yea I wish I would’ve known that before recording all of this lol
I really hope this works out man keep it up. My only advice on the video is if you are recording for TH-cam make sure to keep the phone on its side to get the full view. Other than that the content will be good as other people will live through your journey.
Nice yea I figured that out lol wish I woulda known sooner
just found ya.love it. btw, keep the vids real. dont over produce. old salys like the authenticity.
Thanks I need to get back on the videos here soon
Congrats with your boat and decision to live that lifestyle. You know you can earn a living by using your boat to take tourists for short charter trips in the harbours you visit. Something boat related.. You are a young man. You could learn some skills to offer services to other sailors while in port. Spend some time on shore and get someone to teach you. For example sail repairs, upholstry, or anything boat related that may earn you some money. Just a small tip from me to keep you afloat financially. Good luck and fair winds.
Thanks, need a captain license and a commercial boat for that though
You can make it happen if you want to. There are several ways to earn a living while sailing, it is a question of abilities and imagination. Hang in there. Good luck and fair winds.
Dig it...
:)
How you getting on?
Getting on?
Sorry an English ism, it means how are you getting along? How are you doing?
Ahh lol i gotchya, there’s alot of wind here all week where I’m at but other than that it’s goin great :)
Yea I've noticed that to.ill get it fixed thanks for the feedback :)
Sargasm? Yes.
