    Honestly, sailing a Sun Legend, a 41 feet (12,5m) long, 13 feet (4m) wide, 7,5 Tons heavy sailing yacht is not exactly what one would call 'sailing on a budget'. Go out and look at the anchorages along the tradewind route around the world. There you will find lots of people, young or old, sailing around the globe with really modest boats in the 22 to 30 feet range. You will find boats like the Hurley 22, Achilles 24, Achilles 8.40, or small older Westerlys, Contessas, Sadler 25, 26 and 29, Vancouver 27 and 28, Allegro 27, Laurin Koster 28, the small french Ecume d' mer or the Sangria, from the US the modest Pearson Trident, the Shannon 28 and some smaller Lyell Hess and Carl Arlberg boats and additionally some selfbuilt boats in Steel ,Aluminum or plywood. Most of them 50 to 60 years old but still strong and seaworthy to go literally anywhere. These are the sailors and the boats that really stand for adventurous sailing on a tight budget. The 41 feet Sun Legend is a millionairs toy of 35 years ago. Still fast, roomy and beautiful. But not modest by any means.

      Budgets are relative ofcourse. some spend a lot more. some a lot less. I’m trying to give an insight into the cruising community and hope to share a lot more on all ends of the spectrum. Hope you liked the video though 😇

      Yes I agree. The concept 'budget' is very relative. Hugo does not seem to fit the average 'budget sailor', but the important thing is that he enjoys it and gives the possibility to some other people to share with him.

      Thank you for your comment Helmrich! Hugo here :) Budget is always relative. My boat definitely is not the cheapest or smallest, and my budget is not a "Shoestring" budget. That's the fun part about being out there cruising. There is always someone with a bigger or smaller boat, always someone out there spending more or less. From what I see being out here sailing in the med, I would say I'm probably spending less than 90/95% of sailors I see or meet. And half of my monthly budget I can make by taking people with me and sharing the experience! That would leave a gap of only about 750 euro's a month to come up with yourself. There are definitely things you can do to do it even cheaper, smaller boat, don't go out for food or drinks and don't do anything that you need to pay for while ashore. That wouldn't be the right balance to me, but to each their own. I think this budget is very attainable for a lot of people and it is at a convenience and luxury level a lot of people would enjoy. But don't let my budget be the reason why you don't go out sailing! Love how Jessica is showing all different people and lifestyles really doing it and being out there!

      @@Thepintaproject Hi, Hugo, please don't get me wrong. You have a nice and comfortable and fast boat, and yes out there in the Mediterranen Sea are a lot of people with bigger better boats and spending a lot of more money. I was just a bit irritated by the headline 'sailing around the world on a budget' in capital letters. I like your approach to 'throw off your bowlines' in younger age and earn your life while underway. I didn't have the chance to do the same at your age as a husband and father of 3 children (an experience I wouldn't like to miss). But indeed, now retired, I do like a minimalistic aproach to sailing, I love to touch the water with one hand while sitting in the cockpit. I have been out on the atlantic and in the caribean with my heavy 37' steelboat years ago after retirement . And singelhanded her back to Europe. But now I enjoy to sail a much more modest boat, an Allegro 27. Mostly single handed. Sailed her home this summer from the Botnian sea to the river Ems (1000nm) and then west to the Ijsselmeer and back. Next summer Ireland and back. In 2024 hopefully to the Azores and back. And I enjoy the freedom and more unfiltered experience of small boat sailing.

    Funny you pulled out Rick Paige's "Get Real Get Gone". That's the book that inspired us to buy our 35ft Barbican in May 2021 to sail the world while remote working. My partner and I had no sailing experience, not even in a dinghy but we learnt very quickly and have sailed last two seasons in UK. Yacht travel is amazing if one can handle the few inconveniences and maintenance. Fair winds and hope to cross paths with you one day

      @Boatlifeisbest  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Budgets are relative and different for everyone off course. There will be more videos coming up with sailors doing it for even less. But some things like installing a new engine make more budget sense in the long term. Added resale value, no expensive repairs on an old engine, money back from selling the old engine. All in all it was a cheaper option in the long term to swap the engine then try and fix the old one.

    I would love to do this. I only go on small passages as I work full time and only have a few weeks of vacation every year. I envy you. If I win the lottery one day I'm gone. There's just no way to finance it for me if I leave my job. The boat is already there, sea-worthy and all. But I wont be able to generate any income :(

    • @Boatlifeisbest
      @Boatlifeisbest  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jasper, don’t wait for the jackpot. It may never come. You are already halfway there, man. You have the right boat. Start writing down what you need to make the dream a reality. Is it 20.000? 50.000? 100.000? It doesn’t matter. but as soon as you have a number, start working towards it. Make a plan. Set a time. Where can you save money? Can you get some extra income? Can you start working towards a job you can do remotely? There are more options than you think. You just have to see them, start moving towards your goal and more opportunties will arise. Believe me.. our dream also started with ‘if we win the lottery, we will buy a sailboat and set sail’. until we realized that if we leave things up to luck, they may never happen.

    • @agvgv9263
      @agvgv9263 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Boatlifeisbest My aim is a 3 month annual leave. When you work 100% remote you are paid much less as you compete with people from everywhere. If you have to work remotely from your boat, will you be really relaxed? If you want kids, how are they going to go to school? What about illnesses of parents when they get old? You will miss your big home, so a mix I think is the best long term solution. Seriously, having a 3 month vacation period during your whole working life could well be the most practical and balanced way (kids and Uni students get that), and it would solve 99% of the issues mentioned.

    • @agvgv9263

    • @Boatlifeisbest

      Definitely! Lot's of younger and older cruisers take crew to help pay for the costs and have great company as well. Average prices depending on the area and services would be between 25-50 euros a night. Commercial chartering is a lot higher than that.

    This is a very nice boat but the maintenance and running costs of a boat like this are very significant. Personally if I were going to go solo or maybe 2 people I'd go a bit smaller than this because it makes a big difference in cost (sails, gas, components generally are about half price from 42ft to 36ft, which is huge). I'd rather go a bit smaller than invite random strangers.
