    This is a great video Phil, thanks. It's good to get the facts out about just what can happen to a car at a body shop. Most of us see this kind of thing once in awhile and it's heartbreaking. The only way to stop it is to shine a light on it and call these shops out and make it absolutely unacceptable to turn out work like this and stay in business.
    On a lighter note, I used to love regular super cheap Turtle Wax spray carnauba cleaner wax. It had decent surfactants in it and could actually take care of light water spots on all surfaces. Never find it anymore. Meguiars DA Finishing Wax works great for light spot etching on painted surfaces with its mild clay abrasives. Thanks! 👍👌✌

    This type of video is a huge graduate level of information that could not be passed on without years of experience and the knowledge gained from the good and the bad results when working on a car that should look wonderful after a new paint job but instead, well this video explains the "Instead". So many people like myself with limited experience are thanking God for this kind of video. All the answers given while encountering every issue. Terrific!

    I completely agree with you that nothing a detailer can do on the back-end of a bad paint job.
    I grew up with a father in autobody and have helped repaint 3 of my own vehicles (2 were color changes). The body shop needs to remove the trim (i.e. taping off not sufficient) to do a proper job on a color change as a mm of taping error could leave traces of the old color at the edge of the trim. I'm betting the sand marks on the trim were dry sanding from using the DA to buzz off the clear on the old paint job.

  • @404notfound.....
    @404notfound..... 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    When The Body Shop doesn't take the time to even sand out the sanding marks before the base/clear is applied. It's pretty much downhill from there unfortunately. Fantastic documentation & advice on the paint phil.

    Great catch Phil! I used to do a black car that was repainted on the drivers door in the "quality" you showed us in this vid. I took this oppurtunity to talk to the customer, explain the situation and then make the call to wetsand, compound and polish the whole door. It was perfect after, but I had spent another additional 2.5 hours just to fix this correctly. I didn't have to deal with fisheyes or dustnibs, but it had runs as well. The customer was willing to pay the additional cost and was very happy after. But doing that to a whole car, no way ... I would also have stayed away like you did.

    Dang Phil, that's pretty rough. I've been in the collision industry for nearly 40 years. I have a distinct feeling that's from one of the Richmond Maaco centers. We own a Maaco center in Hampton and while we specialize in economical paint services, our shop is also an I-CAR Gold Class certified collision facility. Sadly, not all Maaco centers care about the product they put out. I assure you, something like that would never leave our shop. Seal & Squeal is a great product, but a bit more aggressive AIO might have cleaned that. But that isn't what the customer was looking for.

    My advice to detailing a car that was recently repainted is to not work on it until the shop is completely done with the vehicle because they can say that the owner didn't give them a chance to fix any imperfections which in turn CAN make YOU liable. I'm in Connecticut so your state laws might be different. Let the shop be completely done with the vehicle and then do your magic. Big fan of Miranda Detailing.

    • @MirandaDetailing
      @MirandaDetailing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yeah I agree. But that’s only IF the shop agrees. The shop told the owner to give it a “wax job” 😖. So they obviously were “done” with it and didn’t want to touch it anymore. Shameful. But yes I told the customer to bring it back even before we touched it. But they went by what the shop told them. So I had the customer sign our acknowledgment form and documented this very well for both the owner and shop.

    • @robertorodriguez6772

    Unfortunately car painting is one of those things that you really do get what you paid for. A cheap paint job really is a cheap paint job. There is so much more to a painting a car than paint /compressor/gun! . Some TH-camrs show painting to be easy but its not. I'm not a painter but know what goes into a decent paint job and I couldn't do it. That body shop whoever they are give the industry a bad name don't you think? A great video, scary for people who are having their cars painted!

    I know it’s a black paint job, and dark paint shows swirls the worst of all. But that is some crazy swirls for a month old paint job? Could that be due to a soft clear sprayed at the body shop? Being that it was a horrible paint job. Or could be that it was washed too soon after being painted?

    Replace the rubber seals and plastic trim that was painted over because removing the paint from them will damage them.

    What a mess the boy shop created on that car. Paint takes at least 30 days to cure and the body shop should be ashamed of that work. From not reverse masking the jambs to painting the rubber seals. Customer should never have accepted the car back. Also the DA sander work on the trim, such poor quality work. There is nothing you can do to fix this as a detailer. You can’t make chicken salad out our chicken $hit..... best is just to wash it and let the customer get with the body shop. Hey Phil I wanted to ask, wouldn't Koch Chemi p601 all in one, seal and remove those water marks? Or would this take longer ?

    • @MirandaDetailing
      @MirandaDetailing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. Maybe it would have with the LC Orange pad or the Koch Chemie Pad that works with P601 but Koch Chemie products where not here yet in the US at the time of filming that job. I would have totally tried it. But again it wasn't a paint enhancement service and the customer didn't want to pay any more then what we did at the time.

      @@MirandaDetailing ah I see thanks Phil by the way you have taught me a lot and it’s pretty awesome to see ya work wish your wife. I hope the Camry guy came back paid ya cause crap isn’t free and got it done ✅

    damn that sucks :(. The customer does sound a bit strange though.. Would have been far easier to just buy the car in the colour that you wanted if its near factory colour. Thats one of the worst quality paint jobs ive seen. Kind of makes you wonder how much he paid for it

    • @MirandaDetailing
      @MirandaDetailing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah. I would think the same thing. Why repaint and risk all of this? 🤦🏻‍♂️

    Horrible paint job! Some of the “Dust Nibs” those are actually Fisheyes from improper cleaning before spraying. I am a custom painter and detailer for over 30 yrs. Good luck 🤦

    • @MirandaDetailing
      @MirandaDetailing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks yeah I used to do body work and painting back in the day. Some are fisheyes but mostly dust nibs. I can feel the difference and see it up close in the light.
      Thanks for sharing.
