I learn alot from both of your videos - i live in Banyuwangi 1 year and was making music videos in Osing and singing all the sings with the music artists - and i had to translate backwards after memorising and translate back Osing - java -- indo - english ... it was ... alot!!!! but so fun. Nothing like mu first concert 5000 people maybe, MC speaking to me and i had no clue what he was saying

Steps: 1. Buy reading books for kids 2. Find the words that appear most 3. Write down to paper and memorize it 10-20 words per day 4. 3 months, you get 900-1800 words 5. No bule conversation, just with drivers sellers from native Indonesian 6. When they feel awkward take a mental note of it, don't repeat the same mistake 7. Listen a lot to indonesian music that you like, find more words! 8. Just talks and keep talking. You'll be able to speak functionally.. 9. 1 year keep doing this you'll be fluent and fix your accents 10. Find words that make you have bad accents and try to mimic native speaker GOOD LUCK!

if you want to be sound like a native Indonesian, trying to use only the root words in conversation. Indonesian people most of the time using the root words, not affixational words.

I'm agree with you Sacha.. Sometimes prefix-suffix system in Indonesian is kinda random and complicated.. I can never explain to foreigners how to use them properly because me myself learn to use those from daily conversation, not because I try to understand why we should use me-, meng-, ber-, -i, -kan, etc. And even me myself as Indonesian never really know exactly how many combination of prefix-suffix could be use for creating new words, it's too many, last time I was trying to figure it out, it's like more than 100 combination So it's like, I speak Indonesian not because I understand the system of the language, but because everybody spoke it, so I follow the root and as the times goes by, I got to used to the language

Yang saya tekankan di sini adalah jati diri dan bangga dengan bahasa ibunda. Perkara inilah yang ditekankan oleh dato seri rais yatim. Majalah? Baca fakta dulu puan. Menurut saya aksen Bahasa Indonesia Sacha adalah perpaduan antara aksen Bule dan Sunda. Mungkin karena Sacha banyak belajar Bahasa Indonesia sama tukang, ibu warung, sopir, dll. (orang-orang yang kebetulan aksen kedaerahannya kental) dan kebetulan Sacha tinggal di Jawa Barat. Memang tidak ada satu pun aksen Bahasa Indonesia yang otentik. Tapi kalau Sacha ingin aksen yang "dianggap normal" dan "baku", amatilah aksen-aksen yang dimiliki para pembaca berita.

These are such good hints! I used to learn Arabic this way. Starting with children's book, writing 10 words a day from the books and children short movies and looking up the meaning, and reviewing them daily. Later on I'd do the same with Arabic news and national geographic in Arabic, to learn more complicated words and sentence structures. Then buying Arabic books for adults about subjects I really like. It was only after 12 years that I finally met Classical Arabic speaking people (I went to Morrocco) to have Arabic conversation with, and they didn't even know I wasn't Arab, they thought I was Syrian haha!

Bagus banget tipsnya wk, dulu majalah bobo jadi temen boker wk. Aku juga lagi belajar bahasa asing, bahasa itali (karena pronounciationnya ga beda jauh sama bahasa indonesia wk), dan aku berhenti soalnya aku ngerasa cara belajar bahasa di dalem kelas itu kurang efektif, paling enggak harus ngebiasain diri dulu kan denger bahasanya, nah aku kurang sumber di situ, film film itali kebanyakan not my type lah wk, lagunya sih aku suka beberapa tapi dikit banget (dan let it go versi itali masuk ke list ini wkwk). kalo gitu gimana ya? secara aku sekarang hidup di tanah sunda tapi populasi orang yg ngomong sunda di kampus sama yg ngomong jawa di kampus banyakan jawanya wk. Anyway: me + kata dasar berawalan K, T, S, P, awalannya jadi lebur (bukan mempelajari tapi memelajari, bukan mentulis tapi menulis, bukan memperhatikan tapi memerhatikan, dan sejenisnya) dengan pengecualian kata dasar yg awalannya K,T,S,P itu diikuti huruf konsonan lagi (bukan mengritik tapi mengkritik, dan sejenisnya).

These are really helpful and practical tips to learn not just Indonesian I think but any second languages! I'm fluent in Indonesian and English and I'm now pretty functional in Spanish (if I got stranded somewhere in Spanish-speaking countries, I can probably still get by, even Portuguese if we all talk slowly), and I've also been working on French. I know the mechanics of some other languages like Mandarin and German but I only have little vocabulary. And German grammar is pretty hard. Tackling accent problem is not that hard for me. The problem for me is actually isolating a certain dialect/accent. My English accent is a well mix of general North American/New England/South Britain/Scottish (with soft Ts but somehow rhotic R) and my Spanish accent is apparently a mix of Mexican/Puerto Rican/Cuban/Spanish (well for Spanish is probably because I use North Spanish vocabs and pronunciation). But really repeating what native speakers say would help a lot. My Spanish teacher in college for example sounds like Venezuelan and has been asked a lot whether or not she is from Venezuela, but apparently nope she's a very Irish lady from the midwest. By the way, "your spelling is your pronunciation", this means Indonesian is a phonetic language (a strictly phonetic one really). This means every letter (and diphthong) (grapheme) only one corresponding sound (phoneme) and vice versa. Included in this category would be, with some really few exceptions: Russian, Spanish, German. A lot of languages were also highly phonetic but then have undergone simplifications in pronunciation, with old spellings kept for historical reasons, like Czech, Polish, and Greek. Believe it or not, English was also once a highly phonetic language as well because of it's Germanic and Norse roots, but supposedly changed especially after French influence came in.
I did sort of the same way :P was learning 100-200 words a day my first 4 month in indonesia (no job or much to call a lifeback then), then I only hanged out with locals and until now I have nooo bule friends :( would like to have that too so I could practice my english too and talk about things that are weird here in a bule perspective, eventhou I love my indofriends. I learnt pretty much the same way. I'd buy SD books from Gramedia the sd1 had pictures which were great for learning. I still have the book somewhere that I used to write down all the words I was learning. I would translate Peterpan songs and hang around at my friends skater shop where zero English was spoken. Agree after a year I was pretty fluent and understanding full speed Indonesian. Oh and to add pillow talk increased to the speed of learning too ;)

The most important message that I get from this video is how much you're eager and willing to learn something. For example, to only hangout with the lower-class locals in an attempt to improve local language skill is quite an effort. I just came back from indo three days ago from being there for a month and I love your ambition, I wish I saw this a month ago! I listened to a bunch of videos and screened shot some basic stuff and I was super surprised how much I was able to communicate! Bahasa is similar to Hawaiian and I am very happy about not conjugating verbs! You’re amazing btw even with your slight accent.
sacha, im 100% indonesian but i was born and raised in australia - you are so much better than me in bahasa 😂 and oh my god, my cousin owned so many of those bobo magazines when we were still little and i used to struggle understanding it and reading it
I'm Indonesian, and prefixes, suffixes, and affixes are the hardest part of Indonesian language, especially for non-native speakers. That's because there is no definitive rule on the combinations and how they affect the meaning of the root words. It's very different from English where there is a standard rule on how affixes affect the word meanings. The only way to learn the correct combination of Indonesian prefixes and how they are used is to observe and hear them in daily conversation and books.
I don't speak any Bahasa Indonesia (even after watching your videos for a few months I can only understand a tiny bit, a few words here and there), but I've taught myself a few languages to varying degrees, and I've also taken language classes in university. I'm an academic, and I love schools and universities, but I have so much respect for you and this method of learning a language. I've always been highly impressed with your knowledge and ability with Indonesian, and this only makes me even more respectful. Universities are great places filled with knowledge and cultural exchange, but they can only do so much (and classes are generally expensive to an extent). This method is so real, so immersive, and so much more friendly and fun than classes, and it encourages so much more cultural exchange! Thanks so much for making this video, it's great! :)

Selamat Siang - I am very interested in your videos and in learning Indonesian. I am a New Zealander and speak English and Maori. I also speak basic tourist Thai and travel in SE-Asia a fair bit so I'm quite used to learning languages. I'm coming to Indo in October with a group of NZ teachers for a cultural/education exchange for 10 days, which will be my first time there. My ear tells me that Indo and Polynesian languages have a fair bit in common and the fact that they use the same alphabet as us and that it's not so tonal (like say Vietnamese) makes me hopeful that I can learn a lot from my NZ base (obviously immersion is where it's really at but I'm not yet in a position to do that...). I will certainly be delving into all your videos Terima kasih!

Untuk org2 Bule yg baru belajar bhs indonesia, selain mjlh Bobo, lagu2 yg didengar seharusnya lagu anak2 spt lagu Balonku, Pelangi, Bintang kecil dll, krn liriknya sangat simple, mudah dimengerti
Sedikit koreksi Sacha. Padanan "spelling" dalam bahasa Indonesia adalah "pengejaan" sementara "pronounciation" itu "pelafalan". Aku pikir mayoritas orang Indonesia tahu ini, tapi memang jarang dipakai dan (sayangnya) versi keminggris (Englosnesian) yang salah kaprah itu yang justru sering dipakai ("spelling" sebagai "pelafalan"). Mengenai perbedaan akhiran -kan dan akhiran -i, ini lebih ke urusan tata bahasa/gramatikal. Dan memang kedua akhiran ini rumit (saya yakin orang Indonesia pun banyak yang tidak paham kalau ditanyai). Perlu pembelajaran panjang untuk paham penggunaan dua akhiran tersebut. Dua-duanya punya banyak fungsi, salah satu fungsinya, misalnya sebagai untuk membentuk kalimat imperatif (imperative form), atau kalimat perintah. Masukkan buku ke dalam lemari! Masuki kucing itu ke dalam rumah! Dua-duanya betul. Perbedaan antar amasukkan dan masuki ada di apa yang mau kamu tekankan (emphasized) dalam kalimat perintahmu. Di kalimat pertama (dengan akhiran -kan), kamu lebih menekankan pada aksi/perbuatan, sementara di kalimat kedua (dengan akhiran -i) kamu lebih menekankan pada lokasi/tempat/tujuan/sasaran dari perintahmu. Aksi dan sasaran. Itu salah satu perbedaannya. Dalam kalimat indikatif (indicative) misalnya: Suatu jin sudah memasuki tubuh laki-laki itu (A ginie has possesed the man): Kamu lebih menekankan pada sasaran, yaitu tubuh si laki-laki itu. Saya (sedang) memasukkan buku ke dalam tas (I am putting my book into the bag): Kamu lebih menekankan pada aksi memasukkan buku. Hi Sacha. I've always been envious of your fluent Bahasa, and now I know why. I have one little problem; I'm dyslexic. (I use voice recognition software to leave my remarks/comments, as I do here on you tube) So your method of buying Bobo is not going to work for me. And all the constant reminding from me, to my girlfriend to help me, I still haven't learnt much after all the time I have been in Jakarta. She's too busy wanting to talk to me in English, so she can improve her English skills. And I do take your advice, and I hang out at my local warung, and talk to the Ojek guys for example. But their English is very limited, which makes them trying to translate my English, into Bahasa, for me to learn, very difficult. So my question is, do you have a way of learning Bahasa, without using the written word?? Much appreciated.

I'm just learning Indonesian and came across this video in my search. This is a great tip. I have several magazines in Indonesia that I will start doing this with! The only thing I will do differently is the amount. For me personally 10-20 is very overwhelming! I will probably start off with 5 then when I memorize those move on to 5 more. Hopefully I will work up to 10 each time! Thanks for the suggestions.

2. Find the words that appear most
3. Write down to paper and memorize it 10-20 words per day
4. 3 months, you get 900-1800 words
5. No bule conversation, just with drivers sellers from native Indonesian
6. When they feel awkward take a mental note of it, don't repeat the same mistake
7. Listen a lot to indonesian music that you like, find more words!
8. Just talks and keep talking. You'll be able to speak functionally..
9. 1 year keep doing this you'll be fluent and fix your accents
10. Find words that make you have bad accents and try to mimic native speaker

I'm agree with you Sacha.. Sometimes prefix-suffix system in Indonesian is kinda random and complicated.. I can never explain to foreigners how to use them properly because me myself learn to use those from daily conversation, not because I try to understand why we should use me-, meng-, ber-, -i, -kan, etc. And even me myself as Indonesian never really know exactly how many combination of prefix-suffix could be use for creating new words, it's too many, last time I was trying to figure it out, it's like more than 100 combination
So it's like, I speak Indonesian not because I understand the system of the language, but because everybody spoke it, so I follow the root and as the times goes by, I got to used to the language

Menurut saya aksen Bahasa Indonesia Sacha adalah perpaduan antara aksen Bule dan Sunda. Mungkin karena Sacha banyak belajar Bahasa Indonesia sama tukang, ibu warung, sopir, dll. (orang-orang yang kebetulan aksen kedaerahannya kental) dan kebetulan Sacha tinggal di Jawa Barat. Memang tidak ada satu pun aksen Bahasa Indonesia yang otentik. These are such good hints! I used to learn Arabic this way. Starting with children's book, writing 10 words a day from the books and children short movies and looking up the meaning, and reviewing them daily. Later on I'd do the same with Arabic news and national geographic in Arabic, to learn more complicated words and sentence structures. Then buying Arabic books for adults about subjects I really like. It was only after 12 years that I finally met Classical Arabic speaking people (I went to Morrocco) to have Arabic conversation with, and they didn't even know I wasn't Arab, they thought I was Syrian haha!

Anyway: me + kata dasar berawalan K, T, S, P, awalannya jadi lebur (bukan mempelajari tapi memelajari, bukan mentulis tapi menulis, bukan memperhatikan tapi memerhatikan, dan sejenisnya) dengan pengecualian kata dasar yg awalannya K,T,S,P itu diikuti huruf konsonan lagi (bukan mengritik tapi mengkritik, dan sejenisnya).

These are really helpful and practical tips to learn not just Indonesian I think but any second languages! I'm fluent in Indonesian and English and I'm now pretty functional in Spanish (if I got stranded somewhere in Spanish-speaking countries, I can probably still get by, even Portuguese if we all talk slowly), and I've also been working on French. I know the mechanics of some other languages like Mandarin and German but I only have little vocabulary. And German grammar is pretty hard.
Tackling accent problem is not that hard for me. The problem for me is actually isolating a certain dialect/accent. My English accent is a well mix of general North American/New England/South Britain/Scottish (with soft Ts but somehow rhotic R) and my Spanish accent is apparently a mix of Mexican/Puerto Rican/Cuban/Spanish (well for Spanish is probably because I use North Spanish vocabs and pronunciation). But really repeating what native speakers say would help a lot. My Spanish teacher in college for example sounds like Venezuelan and has been asked a lot whether or not she is from Venezuela, but apparently nope she's a very Irish lady from the midwest.
By the way, "your spelling is your pronunciation", this means Indonesian is a phonetic language (a strictly phonetic one really). This means every letter (and diphthong) (grapheme) only one corresponding sound (phoneme) and vice versa. Included in this category would be, with some really few exceptions: Russian, Spanish, German. A lot of languages were also highly phonetic but then have undergone simplifications in pronunciation, with old spellings kept for historical reasons, like Czech, Polish, and Greek. Believe it or not, English was also once a highly phonetic language as well because of it's Germanic and Norse roots, but supposedly changed especially after French influence came in.
I did sort of the same way :P was learning 100-200 words a day my first 4 month in indonesia (no job or much to call a lifeback then), then I only hanged out with locals and until now I have nooo bule friends :( would like to have that too so I could practice my english too and talk about things that are weird here in a bule perspective, eventhou I love my indofriends. The coolest people I ever met ❤️❤️

I learn alot from both of your videos - i live in Banyuwangi 1 year and was making music videos in Osing and singing all the sings with the music artists - and i had to translate backwards after memorising and translate back Osing - java -- indo - english ... it was ... alot!!!! but so fun. Nothing like mu first concert 5000 people maybe, MC speaking to me and i had no clue what he was saying

I learnt pretty much the same way. I'd buy SD books from Gramedia the sd1 had pictures which were great for learning. I still have the book somewhere that I used to write down all the words I was learning. I would translate Peterpan songs and hang around at my friends skater shop where zero English was spoken. Agree after a year I was pretty fluent and understanding full speed Indonesian. Oh and to add pillow talk increased to the speed of learning too ;)
The karaoke vcd's were good for finding out new words too.

The most important message that I get from this video is how much you're eager and willing to learn something. For example, to only hangout with the lower-class locals in an attempt to improve local language skill is quite an effort. But since you love Indonesia so much, those things are most likely easier to do and get done. Good luck to everyone who's currently learning Bahasa Indonesia!
aku juga belajar bahasa indonesia sendiri. aku belajar di universitas tapi tidak ada banyak practice karena itu aku belajar sendiri. when i used to live in indonesia i bought me child books too haha and tried to learn it. sekarang aku di jerman dan belajar tentang nonton youtube video, membaca buku (untuk anak2) dan coba memfilmkan (untuk berbicara) dalam bahasa indonesia. i don't have much people or anyone around me who can talk with me. so i usually talk to myself ahahah aduhhh :D makasih untuk video-videomu. aku belajar dengan nonton videomu juga :) makasih ya sacha!

I just came back from indo three days ago from being there for a month and I love your ambition, I wish I saw this a month ago! I listened to a bunch of videos and screened shot some basic stuff and I was super surprised how much I was able to communicate! Bahasa is similar to Hawaiian and I am very happy about not conjugating verbs!

I'm Indonesian, and prefixes, suffixes, and affixes are the hardest part of Indonesian language, especially for non-native speakers. That's because there is no definitive rule on the combinations and how they affect the meaning of the root words. It's very different from English where there is a standard rule on how affixes affect the word meanings. The only way to learn the correct combination of Indonesian prefixes and how they are used is to observe and hear them in daily conversation and books.

I don't speak any Bahasa Indonesia (even after watching your videos for a few months I can only understand a tiny bit, a few words here and there), but I've taught myself a few languages to varying degrees, and I've also taken language classes in university. I'm an academic, and I love schools and universities, but I have so much respect for you and this method of learning a language. I've always been highly impressed with your knowledge and ability with Indonesian, and this only makes me even more respectful. Universities are great places filled with knowledge and cultural exchange, but they can only do so much (and classes are generally expensive to an extent). This method is so real, so immersive, and so much more friendly and fun than classes, and it encourages so much more cultural exchange! Thanks so much for making this video, it's great! :)

Selamat Siang - I am very interested in your videos and in learning Indonesian. I am a New Zealander and speak English and Maori. I also speak basic tourist Thai and travel in SE-Asia a fair bit so I'm quite used to learning languages. I'm coming to Indo in October with a group of NZ teachers for a cultural/education exchange for 10 days, which will be my first time there. My ear tells me that Indo and Polynesian languages have a fair bit in common and the fact that they use the same alphabet as us and that it's not so tonal (like say Vietnamese) makes me hopeful that I can learn a lot from my NZ base (obviously immersion is where it's really at but I'm not yet in a position to do that...). I will certainly be delving into all your videos Terima kasih!

Sedikit koreksi Sacha. Padanan "spelling" dalam bahasa Indonesia adalah "pengejaan" sementara "pronounciation" itu "pelafalan". Aku pikir mayoritas orang Indonesia tahu ini, tapi memang jarang dipakai dan (sayangnya) versi keminggris (Englosnesian) yang salah kaprah itu yang justru sering dipakai ("spelling" sebagai "pelafalan").
Mengenai perbedaan akhiran -kan dan akhiran -i, ini lebih ke urusan tata bahasa/gramatikal. Dan memang kedua akhiran ini rumit (saya yakin orang Indonesia pun banyak yang tidak paham kalau ditanyai). Perlu pembelajaran panjang untuk paham penggunaan dua akhiran tersebut. Dua-duanya punya banyak fungsi, salah satu fungsinya, misalnya sebagai untuk membentuk kalimat imperatif (imperative form), atau kalimat perintah.
Masukkan buku ke dalam lemari!
Masuki kucing itu ke dalam rumah!
Dua-duanya betul. Perbedaan antar amasukkan dan masuki ada di apa yang mau kamu tekankan (emphasized) dalam kalimat perintahmu. Di kalimat pertama (dengan akhiran -kan), kamu lebih menekankan pada aksi/perbuatan, sementara di kalimat kedua (dengan akhiran -i) kamu lebih menekankan pada lokasi/tempat/tujuan/sasaran dari perintahmu. Aksi dan sasaran. Itu salah satu perbedaannya.
Dalam kalimat indikatif (indicative) misalnya:
Suatu jin sudah memasuki tubuh laki-laki itu (A ginie has possesed the man): Kamu lebih menekankan pada sasaran, yaitu tubuh si laki-laki itu.
Saya (sedang) memasukkan buku ke dalam tas (I am putting my book into the bag): Kamu lebih menekankan pada aksi memasukkan buku.
Masih banyak perbedaan lain, dan saya aku memahami imbuhan/akhiran dalam tata bahasa Indonesia bisa sama panjang dan pusingnya dengan memahami tenses dalam bahasa Inggris (terutama karena bahasa Indonesia lebih mengedepankan penekanan daripada konteks waktu dalam kalimat, yang mungkin akan membingungankan orang asing yang sudah terbiasa dengan tenses).

I hope with the video u made I could use some tips for my française. until now what im doing is always practicing each word i know with french peoples. Im also listening and singing many french songs that i like. and yeah watching the movie/video on youtube with/without English subtitle. What i really want to get is the book for kids with française on it. but its little bit hard to fine. so now im doing only using the internet to work it out. ;)

I've always been envious of your fluent Bahasa, and now I know why.
I have one little problem; I'm dyslexic. (I use voice recognition software to leave my remarks/comments, as I do here on you tube)
So your method of buying Bobo is not going to work for me.
And all the constant reminding from me, to my girlfriend to help me, I still haven't learnt much after all the time I have been in Jakarta.
She's too busy wanting to talk to me in English, so she can improve her English skills.
And I do take your advice, and I hang out at my local warung, and talk to the Ojek guys for example. But their English is very limited, which makes them trying to translate my English, into Bahasa, for me to learn, very difficult.
So my question is, do you have a way of learning Bahasa, without using the written word??

When I've seen Indonesian people speak on TV or you tube, they talk very quickly, and it's a little hard to understand them.
Sacha's suggestion of buying Bo-bo every week is good.

pengucapan = proses, cara, perbuatan mengucapkan (kata; perkataan)
pelafalan = melafalkan/mengucapkan kata (huruf demi huruf)

from my experiences, i learn english from school, music, movies (esp. when i pirated thr movie without subtitle lol), and some tourist guiding while im in univ. :)
Aditiya Budi Music, TV shows and Movies helped a whole lot for me. As an Indonesian now I can produce words easily in English and speak it in a standard American accent, though I get tongue tied a lot.

I'm just learning Indonesian and came across this video in my search. This is a great tip. I have several magazines in Indonesia that I will start doing this with! The only thing I will do differently is the amount. For me personally 10-20 is very overwhelming! I will probably start off with 5 then when I memorize those move on to 5 more. Hopefully I will work up to 10 each time! Thanks for the suggestions.
