The GENIUS Way Man United Beat Liverpool At Their Own Game

- Manchester United got their biggest win of the season, twice coming from behind to beat Liverpool 4-3 in the FA Cup Quarter Final. But rather than this being a "bad day at the office" for Jurgen Klopp, the game was a long-awaited justification for how Erik Ten Hag has built his team. Adam Clery explains why, despite all the chaos, it's the Dutchman who deserves the most credit.

7:00 Not only Antony scored, but he did it with right foot AND he did it after a spin.
I looked deep inside myself after that and said anyone but him.. and with his right foot to jfc 😂. Order must be restored to the natural world and Anthony has to go back to continuing to be a flop for the love of all that is sacred
Finally his spinning training for 2 seasons has paid off! ;)
remember the confidence he played with in his first few months. he scored his trademark goal in one of his first games and was doing tricks just to show off. It's amazing how far he's diminished. Other players have said he's the most skillful player in the team in training. There's a decent player in there somewhere. Maybe not first choice right winger for Man utd though.
@@dessertstorm7476it was literally his debut, against arsenal, then also later in the season, popped in one against Barca, with a few goals in between, he definitely is affected more mentally than anything else, and my priority any day would be to see him get that confidence back, his work rate and hard work is always present, but he can improve only if he gets that confidence and composure back.
Laugh my ass off
All the anthony's fidget spinning was for this exact moment....what a legend 🙌

Yeah and did it right in front VVD as well lol. Has to be him isn’t it lol
He sacrificed all his goals to put into one clutch Goal

ETH was so crazy that he put Maguire as a ST, Bruno and Anthony on Defence. nah, thiis shiit was peak.

He was losing with regular tactics so I guess he thought, "why not?"
Maguire is good at winning aerial duels, Bruno is good at long passes. In fact I thought when Adam said Utd beat Liverpool at their own game he meant Bruno pinging those long passes like Trent alexander.
He didnt want Mager to score own goals
"Regular tactics" do you hear yourself. Dont think anybody can cope harder than this@@ajlouis6038
Forget the analysis, forget the criticisms. It was definitely one of the best matches I've seen. This is why i love football
Last time a manager did something such crazy was Sir Alex when he played 7 defenders against Arsenal and won!
The funny thing is Anthony was really not happy when ETH told him in extra time to play lb, but in the end he played very well there

It's the new Dutch style, it's called 'Total chaos' 😆
Total Kaos
Nah this is Sir Alex football, its probably the reason Fergie time is a thing.
He did an interview with Neville, if you losing by a goal whats the point of keeping your defenders and players who wont take that risk.
You going to lose if you dont get the ball into the opposition box, you might concede on the counter but you already losing at that point but getting that last minute winner or goal, well you saw what that did to the United fanbase and this time football in general, it gets everyone excited to talk about it, it gets the players up for the next game etc.
Totale chaos in Dutch
I'm sold. Lol.
Trademark it mate.
Football is a funny game, but funnier is trying to analyse it. If United lost, then the same decisions would be made fun of
Exactly
Tru but at the same time we were playing so much better than Liverpool in this formation
@VirkStar321 you mean non formation 😂
Well the Red Devils maintained their persona, *the aggressiveness.*
Just imagine if United did lose this game , what a different week it would have been , Eth would have had his last rights , the players would have been slaughtered for losing again to a top 5 rival , etc etc what it did do was Save the season , Eth was in old Trafford early Sunday morning hours before the kick off planning the victory , his team were going to deliver . All the press and haters were gutted at the end of extra time because against the odd United Delivered a performance worthy of the shirt they wore , and its been along time coming . In a season of unprecedented turmoil, with injuries that happened even before this match with Casemiro and Evans dropping out and the early season disciplinary and accusations problems for Antony , Eth steered this team forward to this point in with a shout of CL football next year and possibly another final on the last day of the season , something that looked a long way off before New years day 2024 after defeats to the likes of Crystal Palace , Bournemouth Nottm Forest and stuffings at home to Newcastle and Man City . Eth is a good manager he the tactical awareness, he has a plan of how he wants his teams to play , imo he just hasn't had enough players to fit into his style yet , this next window is crucial to United going forward into next season . Sacking Eth would do more harm than good, continuity is the key for united going forward .
Antony at left back reminded me of how Valencia and Ashley Young smashed it back in the day
When it was 1-1 at the Etihad, I literally said, rather than subbing on Anthony to play RW, why not play him at left back instead of Lindelof, and having Amad more advanced. Then this happened the following game. I genuinely believe we will get the best out of Anthony at full back position. He simply doesn't have the pace, trickery or confidence to do it in Premier League
His proficiency at LB is poised to thrive even more.
Seems like the FA cup is coming back to life, weirdly. Could it be that as pressure continues to ramp up in the Premier League and it gets overwhelmingly tactically intense, players/teams increasingly see the FA cup as somewhere they can let rip and go for it, which is why we're seeing these epic games.
Man city has made epl a farmers league....
Nearly. Without Liverpool the last few years it would have been... And now Arteta is taking Arsenal to that level.
You're right it was chaotic. ETH knew his side could'nt play a systematic football, so he applied man 2 man marking to kill Liverpool's creativity. Basically to ruin their system of play.
Such strategy has a very high risk tho. And it takes a lot of the players energy. I don't think ETH would prefer them as his style of play. It was simply contextual.
However he could build a more actual style of play from it. Considering his players were good at it. With some adjustment ofc, depending on which opponent the team is up against.
I think this game was unusual given Ten Hag's players actually found themselves with higher energy levels than the opposition, and they mostly applied themselves to the game plan. The only player who didn't do that quite so well for most of the game was Rashford but at least he scored a goal to make up for the earlier miss.
Mostly my frustration with United is their sloppy passing and uninspiring movement in games they should win. They were better on Sunday but most of the success was fast pressing to create counterattacks. It's not the first time Utd have tried this but mostly it's half hearted without enough effort. I was amazed to see them so sharp on Sunday.
@@sdemosi you said : "sloppy passing", that's it. That's what i meant when i said "ETH knew his side couldn't play systematical football". Most United players were'nt very comfortable with the ball and keeping possesion. Kobbie Mainoo was exceptional tho. This is why ETH said he couldn't apply his style of play. Which is why he also said he needed to adapt.
So far (before this game ofc), his attempt to adapt were not good enough to give an impact. Hopefully after this game ETH will learn a lot more. If you can't apply your ideal philosophy of football, try to be a bit more contextual. Based on the condition of players you have on your side.
Rashford played well, not excellent ofc. But overall he played well.
@@sdemosi however tho the best approach to go forward is when you have a stable basic philosophy of football. They are more efficient, more sustainable, with low-risk (getting players injured or fatigue).
@@J4bb3rW0ok13 I don’t particularly want the manager to adapt as much as I want better players who can pass the ball accurately
@@sdemosi you see that's the problem between so called "ideal concept" vs "reality". Having an ideal concept is a good thing. That is the kind of concept we must pursuit, or aim for.
However tho, "reality" is a different thing. For the moment ETH doesn't have the ideal players to reach that "ideal concept". So he needs to be a bit more contextual. Do whats best based on the players he have.
Wonderful analysis. You've just added another layer of insight into an unforgetable match. I'm still buzzing.
I am still buzzing - ages since I felt good watching united
regarding the back four not being involved in the press, it's definitely something the players aren't committing to. at one point we were attacking and McTominay was shouting at the defense to move up and Liverpool initiated a counter almost immediately exploiting the space. Maguire came on and he was way more confident and they started being more together
they're not committing to it because the only 3 defenders we have that are capable of playing a high line are Dalot Martinez and Shaw and 2 of them are injured right now
It's definitely a result of the patchwork defense we've had all season and definitely something we won't be seeing next season once we've overhauled our medical department and bought some more players that fit the profile
It's coming together; slowly, but it is
Amad is a very patient player. He has been waiting for his opportunity quietly all season. Bet some players would already be releasing statements and inciting transfer rumours.
ENERGY LEVELS MAYBE BUT.. this time last season no team had played more games than Manchester United and they still got to 2 finals😂

People really going on about tiredness and injuries for Liverpool? Stop it.. United played 63 games last season, more than anyone in Europe, they sent more players to a mid season World Cup than anyone in Europe other than 2-3 sides, but more than anyone in England.. They still reached two finals and finished above Liverpool.. And then this season they’ve had by far more injuries than anyone in the league.. No excuses, when United lose it’s because they’re just not good enough, when Liverpool, Newcastle, City etc lose it’s because they’re tired or have injuries, just don’t.. Not a team on Earth more tired or more stricken with injuries than United this season.. Understand United are the biggest side on Earth and every loves to see the best lose but come on, at least be reasonable, it’s not one rule for one and one rule for others.. Liverpool ain’t as tired or hit with injuries as United, they got hammered by a bunch of teenagers.
Good lord. United fans and their paragraphs of bullshit. Real Madrid is the No1 team in the world. Newcastle and Chelsea have had more injuries. Liverpool had 8 starters injured at one point. United play the occasion v LFC and then get battered by Fulham and Brentford et al, proving they’re a shit team and lonnnnng may that continue.
@@shu550 And Liverpool are some top team with 1 league title? Stop it.. Funny how videos about United are full of bin dippers, big club.
The only problem with this video is the big gap that is left in the midfield is not completely a tactical problem, during a free kick against liverpool, ten hag and mctominay told the defenders to stay high and they retreated leaving the space, the only times we stay high and defend is with martinez and maguire,
Maguire?

9:54 _"Might be a whole other video in [Antony at LB]"_ *Yes please!*
Tactics is the base. Hard work & Talent wins you games.
Ajax under Ten Hag had a similar set up defensively. Ten hag played a deep 3 narrow set of defenders to force teams wide giving time for the team to run back and defend.
If your players run then it’s a genius set up.
By forcing the opponent to play direct in transition you know how they are going to attack each time. This is worth it’s weight in gold.
Playing a high line with a high press can make defending the transition more difficult and unpredictable.
Ten Hags system only works if his defenders stay disciplined and his players run back.
The system he wants to play has completely broken down this season due to injury, poor attitude and disruptive behaviour from players.
Ten hag has his forward line set up. If he can get his defensive set up tweaked next season we could be in for a very exciting style of football.
Everything had to be special. Amad Scoring, Antony scoring with the right foot, Maguire as Center Forward, Bruno center back, Antony Left back, Onana becoming slimmer,
This match alongside Newcastle- City where KDB came back from injury are two of the best games I've seen this season

Thanks for the insightful analysis. So much better than those insufferable geeks on Tifo. You've gained a subscriber in me.
Been saying for a long time now Antony could be a good left back.
He is very talented and has great work ethic, but he's simply not good enough in an attacking sense for ManUtd. Much like Ashley Young or Antonio Valencia, we may come to find he's best as a full back.
He’s not big or strong enough to be a left back, full back is probably the second to third hardest position to play. It’s not easy there is a lot of decision making to make.
Ten Hag absolutely does NOT want to play in a 4-1-5 (with that wide open space in midfield) when they lose the ball and are trying to win it back. He’s being forced to, because he doesn’t have two CBs with pace. Watch games with Lisandro and Varane playing together - those acres of space vanish.
All his bonkers tactics this season came to use in the most important game of his utd career. It's insane.
Mate we defend really deep cause if you use an high line with Lindelof, Maguire or Evans you get done.
That was pretty good analysis
Great analysis...
It was a completely mad game in the end. My nerves were shredded in the end. At the final whistle it felt like I had played. Fantastic game.
Great Analysis. With the players we currently have, what do you think of a 3-3-4 formation going forward and a 3-5-2 when defending, with a high line and ball playing defenders and goalie? like Onana and a defence of shaw Martinez and Dalot, Anthony as a left wing back, amad as a right wing back; mainoo Casemiro and bruno/mount in the middle; and Rashford and rasmus up front with rash on left. This would be a team with more discipline defensively and in the middle and provide more threat going forward. Then try to buy players who can fit this system over next 2 transfer windows, as well as providing completion for places
I must say I couldn't believe how much space Sboszlai and then Elliott were getting in midfield, and indeed the latter scored after being given ages to pick his spot (plus a deflection of course), so I was thinking 'wth is ETH up to here? is he just a rubbish manager? surely you don''t give players like that so much time and space', but this video has convinced me that there is a method to the madness (although on another day Liverpool have their shooting boots on and score seven again).
tbh though I don't see this tactic working long term. any system which requires individual heroics on a regular basis is going to run out of road sooner or later. this is why Guardiola is all about the system and never relies on last-ditch or heroic anything
for the first time in years I felt like we witnessed a game not bound to the sterile tactico musings of the modern game. Just two teams going at it, boat load of errors and interceptions in midfield. No real tactics especially in the final 40 minutes, which saw Ten Hag put Bruno in defense and leace Maguire up front.
And we still have people trying to analyse it like it's that deep
United also faced injury throughout the whole season so far!
I’m really looking forward to the match on 7th of April.
Yeah. It was crazy match. I'm not even that familiar with football but even I could see how Liverpool players were just too tired by the extra time
both teams were shattered, garnacho had only 2 training sessions all week because of a hamstring issue and was bombing it in the 121st min.
ETH never complained of tiredness last season when he had/s a worse squad than klopp and a crazy number of matches plus a World Cup. Klopp could even have rested players midweek@@rajimus
Fantastic game. Engaging analysis. Fabulous.
I really hope we get Silva from benfica . Him and Martinez as our center backs would be amazing. Varane off the bench 😩.
When you play a high risk strategy and you win, you look like a genius.
But Man Utd came sooo close to losing that match. So many LIverpool chances at 1-2!
i mean united had plenty of great chances to end the game too, if anything we were just as good attacking wise as they were
Two goals came from deflections too

Lol. What are you talking about. Man United had 5 big chances where as Liverpool had 1 and 2 defection goals. United had so many chances. Rashford missed an easy chance at the end of normal time to win it. Liverpool were mostly out of ideas when they dominated possession in the 2nd half. United were easily the better side.
All liverdrool chances were either deflection or counter attack but it was Man Utd who countered at the last minute with Dialo 😂
personally i think it was more luck than judgement, the two late goals came from Liverpool errors rather than United tactical decision

Which is more delusional? Being a lil salty your team gave up chances on a game that was in your grasps most of the second half and into overtime or acting like this squad is now on SAF status cause they had some fight in them on a team that has significantly more miles on their legs and has faced/is facing a massive injury crisis the past few months.

Mid table in most leagues? They're chasing top 4 in the Premier League in a year where they've had many injuries and few suitable replacements. This 90 against Liverpool was perhaps the first representative match of Ten Hag's system all season.
Was his genius to allow Liverpool to own the ball? To have a 5v2 break?
Liverpool threw that game away
Nowt to do with ERIC
While I agree with the majority of this analysis, I think it’s unfair to suggest tactics went out the window in Extra Time. UTD sacrificed Varane , brought on Maguire and shoved Bruno CB to essentially take on the role Lisandro and Timber played at Ajax. One very aggressive CB comfortable in possession playing fantastic long balls and committing to tackles up high, not retreating and guarding the box, and one make contact runs into the box. Obviously the dynamic was different due to the physical profiles of Maguire and timber being so different, but the philosophy was essentially the same. As well as that, they switched to a full pitch man to man press. Utd have been avoiding doing that this season, as our choice of CBs are far better box defenders than high line CBs. When we went completely man to man, Liverpool simply didn’t have room to breath. If we keep ETH on, and give him the profile of defenders he needs to play this type of football all of the time without having to make silly compromises like Fernandes playing CB and Maguire having to be the CB who’s making runs forward, there’s no reason why that elite positional won’t be the go to next season. Very exciting times ahead hopefully.
can bruno be converted to do this permanently ?

Genius?? C'mon...took advantage of a tired team in the second period of extra time at home. Liverpool had no legs left. Man U deserved what they got, and it was a great game to watch for neutrals, but let's call a spade a spade...
Adam? From whatculture wrestling? Or am I experiencing the Mandela effect?😂
I've been shouting for Antony to go to LB ever since Reguillion was sent back, the guy is never going to be good enough to play as a winger in the Premier League he has no pace and no final ball. We saw the same thing with Antonio Valencia and he was our best right back until AWB. If he wants a career at United he has to seriously consider a permanent move there or just fuck off in the summer window.
Honestly, as much as antony just isnt up to it on the wing, given we have no left back, i really dont see what we lose playing him there as you say woth license to bomb forward.
We turned ashley young and antonio valencia into pretty good wing backs, might be the secret.
This needs a rethink
Wow!
It's called hight risk hight reward 😆👌
Think the back line without the likes of shaw, Martinez and dalot playing together regularly means they can't play the high line
No,EtH wants the back to play higher up but with all these injuries they cant
United’s splitting of pressing 5 and defending 5 is only for this season, I don’t think EtH wants this way of play for long time, the problem is he didn’t estimate our defensive personnel properly, when 5 people press upfront you need a high line from defenders, so that midfield is not empty, like other good teams do.
That was a reason why Onana was bought, so that he can do sweeping. But except for Dalot, we have no defenders who can actually do that “being aggressive” job. Maguire has the bravery, but not the technical quality. Varane, Lindelof, Evans and Shaw are good defenders but not suited for this job. They are good in defending the box, stopping cross etc.
EtH should have bought a defender before Mount, that was a mistake from his side.
I think Mount will work out. There is a good chance he and Kobbie have the midfield this fall.
I think we (United fans) need to not blow this out of proportion tactically. Yes it was the first game in along time it looked like the team wanted to play in a united kit, but an off form liverpool gave us troubles, and the end tactics reflect a team 3-2 down in extra time that is prepping for pens.
So Man U tactic was counting on Liverpool tired legs and hoped they made mistakes ?
Backfour of Amrabat Fernandes Shaw Antony is going to happen at some point isn't it? 😂

liverpool made 5 subs as well. Garnacho trained twice all week with hamstring issues and 22 first team injuries mean uniteds players have played as many games as the liverpool ones.
