This woman is one of my hugest musical inspirations. As an artist, she's a shining example of how someone can explore every facet of themselves in front of the world, creating something amazing in the process.

Look?! Nothing was about “look” then. It is all about BEING…
In your case I suggest: Die. And get reborn proper. Live proper. This approximation you kids attempt.. it isn’t life. It won’t satisfy. You will look back with regrets. What is the point of living like that?
If you at all relate to what she does, make your own way and luck. It’s not gonna happen on its own. It’s not about earrings and buns and stuff (honestly….🙄) . It’s not about aesthetics... That’s a byproduct. Trivial almost…. If you find the real meaning that would already be there, no effort. No reverence needed either.
Even if I sound ornery, what I’m trying to say is a good wish: Good luck, young people, you’re gonna need it!

When she plays that first riff she knows the power she has over a huge and potentially unruly crowd, and almost disarmingly,it’s apparent she knows she can live with it. A lot of stars literally go mad because of the God complex induced by massive adoring crowds, and then further accelerate the decline with hourly doses of stimulants ( delivered by courier , free to all recording studios and live venues throughout the 80s and 90s I promise you ).
But Polly didn’t go that way, she always saw the audience as a trusted old friend , even when she was so young, and so she’s had a long ,happy and ,not coincidentally, a relatively drug free career.

Pj went through two rough mental breakdowns in the 90s and was underweight as a result of it. She felt invaded by all the attention at some point. She has spoken on this elaborately. I’m glad she survived it.

Walk down 5th avenue and stop 100 people and ask them who PJ Harvey is. 99 will have no clue and the other will be PJ Harvey. Ask the same 100 who Miley Cyrus is? 99 will know and the other will be a dude from Ulan Bator.
9 albums released in the US and the highest got to #29 and the last one didn't even crack the top 50.
      I think that's fairly underrated.
I know she's better known back home in the UK, but still nothing like as highly rated as she should be.

Great song from one of the true musical geniuses of Rock. A Sheela-Na-Gig is a Celtic fertility idol found on many medieval churches and castles in Britain and Ireland. A vestige of pagan times, it is a nude female figure with exaggerated genitalia. Women wishing to have a child but having trouble getting pregnant would place money in the err... appropriate hole, hence the lyric "put money in your idol hole."

Yes: Nirvana kicked opened the door to the return of Guitar-Rock. Oasis, PJ Harvey, Blur, Pulp. Thom Yorke said that without Nirvana, Radiohead wouldn’t exist. He said that Nirvana’s enormous success meant that record companies were suddenly trying to sign young Guitar Bands, and Radiohead was a Young Guitar Band. Pulp started way before Nirvana, obviously, but their big successes came after Nirvana made it big in 1991. Nirvana was like The Beatles in that Record Companies were signing “similar artists” that were playing their type of music. PJ Harvey DEFINITELY fit into that category. I love PJ Harvey, by the way.
