sheela na gig , i searched all of ireland for her even when i hardly knew she existed, i now proudly exibet out on my wall, sheela, " down by the water" is another that touches me profondly cos of a lost daughter, then i moved home and now live in the area where pj harvey was born, saw it in a local paper a few days ago, pj r u trying to tell me summat? apart from yur music is fab and heartbreakinng
Was born in 1996 and my dad had recorded this from a CD (or I think it was even FM radio) on a cassette he made in the early '90s. Originally he thought it was Down by the Water. Nevertheless, that acoustic guitar lick at the beginning of this never gets old to me.
Im totally with you, that guitar riff gets me so hyped, however I don't think its acoustic. It does kind of have that quality since Polly recorded it with a semi-acoustic guitar.
🙌 go 'head lil sis! PJ Harvey has badass music out there. Tori Amos and Sarah maclachlan are badass too. give them a listen when you have that chance💖🎉
I've been trying to show you over and over Look at these my child-bearing hips Look at these my ruby-red, ruby lips Look at these my work-strong arms You've got to see my bottleful of charm I lay it all at your feet You turn around and say back to me He said Sheela na gig, Sheela na gig You exhibitionist! I'm gonna wash that man right out of my hair Just like the first time, said you didn't care Wash that man right out of my hair Heard it before, no more Wash that man right out of my hair Turn the corner, another one there Wash that man right out of my hair Heard it before He said Sheela na gig, Sheela na gig You exhibitionist! Put money in your idle hole Gonna wash that man right out of my hair Just like the first time, said you didn't care Wash that man right out of my hair Heard it before, no more Take my hips to a man who cares Turn the corner, another one there Take my hips to a man who cares Heard it before He said Sheela na gig, Sheela na gig You exhibitionist! Put money in your idle hole He said Wash your breasts, I don't want to be unclean He said Please take those dirty pillows away from me
sheela na gig is a celtic warrior mother goddess in welsh history i think. maybe where the austalians got the name. this is the song of hers that got my attention a while back
Blue 'contacts'? Thats far from tact towards a Spanish speaking little old lady and man who desperately tried to reach out to the 1st group who, dryly, didnt plan to respond to either of them. Songs were a no go or were capped at their deaths. Now my mom Francisca has died and thats Europes Cannes Filln festival "Amelie". That was a trest to me by another and that doesvt give one soul a leglly bound lien on me or my immediate family. The 2nd and 3rd of us are now at the years 50 and the third Wave of ignorant thieves is upon us. You may end up in worse places to keep too much for yourselves because our loss makes them an attractive target, but I still dont want to host these Filipinos and clinicians nor be Dared in and El Seven on the return. should be louder---I'll never forget this in concert with her early trio
Me neither! Saw her loads of times back up north and she was amazing back then. I remember the Dry tour at Hull Adelphi - amazing, so powerful.
No. Making everything louder is what has destroyed good quality audio. You're clueless as fuck.
Yep ! For an indie band (which they were back then) the drum kit was massive.
If you listen to this song ones it will be stuck in your head for 5 days

Fun Fact: Facebook will not allow this video to be shared. It goes against their “Community Standards”. Sheela Na Gig!!!!!✊🏼
😱🤦♀️why bc the song was abt a certain religion?? and censorship still exists as of March 29 2024
@@RRDB92who knows? The song isn't about religion. It just uses the Sheela-na-gig as a metaphor.
I'm posting it right now lol fucking FB
@@jenblock1609heck yeah!!
All her songs are catchy
As brilliant a song now as it was then... timeless
this is a very good song
haha so young, so small, but so powerful!!! "YOU EXIBITIONIST!!!"
Still awesome after all these years!!!
I've been trying to show you over and over
Look at these my child-bearing hips
Look at these my ruby-red, ruby lips
Look at these my work-strong arms
You've got to see my bottleful of charm
I lay it all at your feet
You turn around and say back to me
He said
Sheela na gig, Sheela na gig
You exhibitionist!
I'm gonna wash that man right out of my hair
Just like the first time, said you didn't care
Wash that man right out of my hair
Heard it before, no more
Wash that man right out of my hair
Turn the corner, another one there
Wash that man right out of my hair
Heard it before
He said
Sheela na gig, Sheela na gig
You exhibitionist!
Put money in your idle hole
Gonna wash that man right out of my hair
Just like the first time, said you didn't care
Wash that man right out of my hair
Heard it before, no more
Take my hips to a man who cares
Turn the corner, another one there
Take my hips to a man who cares
Heard it before
He said
Sheela na gig, Sheela na gig
You exhibitionist!
Put money in your idle hole
He said
Wash your breasts, I don't want to be unclean
He said
Please take those dirty pillows away from me

Sheela is from Sanskrit and Is the first language created on the planet ~ to which all other languages have subsequently been derived . . .
Timeless!

Idle hole or idol hole? The theories on the sheela na gig origins are super interesting......

Rock N Roll!

I'd expect a "woman" who's willing to take on all comers to say "yess" to this song.
She is so cool!

This album needs remastering
Michael Fearless yes! all her earlier material
I thought the demos showed it doesn't :-)
Just use your volume button. It sounds fine.
And lo! It came to pass....
Absolutely! Making it louder would be a great starting point.
🖤🖤
I just remembered Heathcliff 🤣
She was just trying to help us find and appreciate the Holy Grail.
Those silver wedges again.
💙
wow 0:40 it sounds like Nirvana's Curmudgeon.
Kurt Cobain was a huge PJ Harvey fan. Listed this album (Dry) as one of his all-time favourites
