Hey David! I’m the tenor the sax player from the subway! Amazing job on the transcription! This is the first time someone has transcribed me which is so exciting!!!! I spent years in high school transcribing so I feel your pain for how long this must have taken keep it up !!!
Is there a full version of you playing this on high quality audio? I think it sounds really good but your channel has too many videos for me to skim through.. I really really like the part at 0:19 so smooth, so much emotion
This is the easiest way to think of organized chaos. They're battling, but also staying in harmony of eachother. Example: 0:57. Once one of the two go higher, the other follows, and once the impact has been left they both reside a bit more.
I literally have no music theory background, but i am a Bboy and i listen to many genres of music. Especially Jazz Funk since it's what i usually love Breakdancing to. I noticed in the original battle, when i replayed it. That they had been sitting on that melody for the maximum allowable for a melody to replay, i think i counted 4 repeats. If they had went on for another count, it would have been dragging. So i was like "HOLY SHIT RED PANTS GUYS DID SOME GENIUS!" when he quickly raised the tone with that rapid climb on the notes. But the amazing part is they would allow each other to shine equally in between and took turns carrying the rythym.
@@B.Scruby also sapphire said that he soloed most of it like this part because the baritone guy big one Zach keep doing the beat I think and at one point in this both of them did it because sapphire wanted Zach to do a solo but in the full one about six minutes Zach did a solo and sapphire did the beat
That may or may not be the reason I looked for this video. I'm a trombone player so it would've taken me forever to transcribe saxophone music. But now that I have this I might try making some music. I've been wanting to for a while but never had the time or the right thoughts/bits for it.
There were some beautiful melodies, counter melodies, harmonies, and amazing dynamic parts between the two, all of which was entirely improvised. This is exactly what you get when you get two people who know their instruments and art so well, that when they got together, it was like two people who had played together their entire lives getting together to jam. I remember watching this for the first time, and just being in awe when the first sax came back in at 0:16, and then dropped the sustained G...I knew it was gonna be epic. And it was. I almost like to think of that sustained G as the acceptance of the challenge. Like, I see you. Let's go.
I was trying to transcribe it and was trying to figure out why I was having such a hard time. Turns out it's a really complicated piece of music. Great job!
Awesome transcription! It seems a bit diff from the orig, but I'd be lying if I said this didn't harmonize better. Also, considering that this is still pretty true to the event, I'd be thrilled to see other people learn and play this piece in memory of that pleasantly surprising improv
Thank you so much, I haven't been studying music theory for that long, but I heard the original and really wanted to see what was happening but Im horrible at transposing. Ty, Ima go analyze it now.
It is a thing called altissimo. Basically, very difficult notes that you sort of have to squeak out of your instrument. I also play alto sax, and there are some not to difficult ones on there. I can only play up to altissimo G though. Hope this helps!
