      Sandra Fuentes I agree with your tap water statement. Thankfully I live in an area in Canada where my tap water is safe to drink. Most of Canada is except for a few indigenous communities which is sad.
      I lived in Ecuador for a year and there we had to drink bottled, people forget that many countries don’t have regular access to clean water.

    Also love a vegan, sustainable queen who understands not everyone can afford the upfront costs and respects that parents are busy so they may not be able to use reusable diapers

    • @clarim1204
      @clarim1204 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I did disposables with my first and cloth with my second.
      Buying a whole nappy system is a massive upfront cost, but it’s not all or nothing. I started with reusable wipes (and I’d never go back they work sooooo much better), then I added a few daytime nappies, when they were all dirty I washed and used disposable until they were dry. Then each month I added a little more. Now my daughter is nearly 12 months I’ve only just added final night nappies to be 100% reusable and compared to what I would have spent on 100% disposable I’m close to breaking even. The next year or two only cost a couple extra washes a week.
      Time is a different factor, I’m currently taking a cloth break because I have no childcare or adult support during lockdown so I get time pressures, but again it’s not all or nothing.
      As for having the stomach for it, disposables leak poo far, far more often than cloth. You can’t escape someone else’s bodily fluids when you’re a parent no matter what options you choose!

    • @eanatra
      @eanatra 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@clarim1204 I am currently doing the same with nappies. Especially when my baby was born and reusable were way too bulky I used disposables.

      I did mix with my second child. I sewed my own diapers/nappies with flannel I purchased cheaply at thrift shops, and used disposables when we went out and overnight.

    Even as a cis woman I appreciate you using simple terms like “if you get your period” instead of something like “if you’re a woman” because not all women get their periods - Trans or cis and not all that get their periods are women. That warmed my heart 💖

      Simona S. It means I don’t identify either as a man nor as a woman but as something in between.
      To make it simple (I’m just talking about myself, could be different for others), I identify as a more androgynous being.
      As many non-cisgender people, I underwent a period of “hyper feminization”, since I was born with a female’s body... I thought people would like me more if I dressed more feminine.
      In that period I recorded my TH-cam videos... now I let go most of it, and feel way better when expressing myself the way I am :)

    • @carnamilinga
      @carnamilinga 4 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      It depends on the herbs. Basil for example is just planted to tight. You can take the plants out of the pot and split those up into three to four pots. Welcome to your own basil forrest. It's always a good idea to repot bought herbs. Also know how to cut the stems, so the plant can keeps growing. Some plants like mint are hard to kill. Even if it looks quite dead, the roots are strong and keep producing new stems and leaves after a while, but others don't (like basil).

    • @mimmikibilly
      @mimmikibilly 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      I noticed that the plants my mum took home from the supermarket every now and then were always wilting after a short time. And I think it depends on the fact that supermarkets have a different temperature than our house, bc it's either very low or a bit hot due to air conditioning. The best thing is probably to get plants from farmers and gardeners.

      The way they are grown is usually hugely unsustainable - it's to create plants that look big and healthy on the shelf for a couple of days... the root systems are weak and usually pot bound! Get cuttings or grow from seed!

      About adopting pets- I dont know if this works for all pets, like fish and in some places like out in the country it is difficult to find turtles or things of that sort in the humane society but IMPORTANT NOTE: Their are turtles, hamsters and other animals at the humane society. Still do your research and see if you can provide that animal with a good home because they are mostly dropped off because they are too big (for turtles) but many parrots that have escaped are there too, so just a note! I am not yet zero waste but I try to do better every day, and I reduce my footprint with veganism mostly so I am figuring things out one at a time.

    A lot of zero waste stops have actually made my life more convenient. Bringing my own utensils means I don’t have to walk through a sea of people across the cafeteria to get plastic ones. Reusable water bottles usually hold more water and allow me to carry water with me all day. Bringing my own lunch is healthier and I get to eat foods I enjoy. Don’t even get me started on reusable (metal) pencils. Pricier at first, but for the first time I haven’t needed to replace my pencils every week. It easier to write because of the heavier weight of the pencil, and it’s helped me save money in the long run. Love the recommendations in this video! Remember just by making a few small changes, you are making a positive impact on the world :)
    Edit: I forgot about this but I’ve reduced my dairy consumption greatly and not only has it helped the way my body feels, but it has improved my skin so much!

    I accidently stumbled upon you just now and I luv you! Really! I am 66 yrs old and learned a lot of these long ago from frugal parents who grew up poor in the depression era. I hate waste and I luv your style. A little fast talking for an old southern woman, but since I like you so well, I'll adapt my hearing of what I can find of you. I am a little overwhelmed with too many things right now, so I like the comment, use what you can and leave the rest. I do upcycle and repurpose what I can. We sell at the local flea market and I donate the rest. Very little do I actually send to the dump. I have been trying to declutter and organize. I lost my son almost 2 yrs ago. The grieving process is so strong. But he was my last immediate family member left so I am trying to remove everything I can live without. I do not want to leave all my things for my husband to hoard thinking they meant the world to me. Especially since I'm still trying to do all the sorting from my parents belongings. I really appreciated the board for the bees in the last video. We live in the country and have a lot of carpenter bees. Great suggestions for the ones without homes. Come to me at just the right time. Spring here in USA, Al. Thank you for all your suggestions! gt

      Since quarantine started, I've been making my own bread loaves and other types. It's healthier (no preservatives), much much more delicious (since it's fresh), and more sustainable since there are non stick loaf pans and there's no packaging needed to store it! Although yes, packaging of the ingredients is waste, it's still less waste than buying packaged sliced bread from the supermarket. I've also been thinking of ways and finding eco friendly stores to buy my ingredients from.
      P.s. If you don't have the time to make bread, or don't have the tools to do so, buy from your local bakery!

    I really loved the way you said all these stuff. Btw quick tip - I sewed my cloth makeup removal pads from my father’s old 100% cotton t-shirt and I sewed it as rectangles instead of as rounds - can you imagine the amount of cloth that is thrown away just because it is cut as rounds?

    ZW Century Challenge: The challenge is on... gonna see if I can tackle all 100 of these! I’m going for it! But I must admit I am 56, and five of these items no longer apply to my biological needs, plus I don’t have a child (nappie-free zone) so I am setting my sights on chasing down the other 94 ZW suggestions, many of which are already part of my daily habits. Since I am stuck at home in these times of social distancing, I am going to start with some of your DIY’s... have jars, have ingredients, have internet, have time, have NO excuses. Is anybody else in on this challenge? We can do this folks! Thanks for this timely video Immy, it’s very motivating and makes me feel like I can seriously kick some ZW butt over the next while!!!!!!!

    I’m going to start “zero waste” and your tips are really useful. Made me more open-minded than before. Coz I’m perfectionist and love aesthetical things, now I understand, that I should do my best for now. Buying all natural or eco-friendly things is not our aim. Thank you! My name is Ayazhan and I’m from Kazakhstan 🇰🇿. p.s.: many years I know about the “zero waste”, but didnt start to do anything. It’s really need a time to come this...

    Thank you for reminding us that this pandemic is temporary and the planet needs all of our help all year round instead, and since many of us will likely have more time on their hands, we can all plan ahead on what we can sacrifice for the sake of the environment. My neighbourhood was given a bulk soap shop where you take your own bottles to refill. I didn't know that teabags can carry microplastics. On top of that, loose leaf tea has more nutrients because it has the whole leaf, rather than leaf residues and lower quality parts, just in case some of us don't know. Your videos are always relieving and a pleasure to experience! 😊 Take care.

    #74 is so important. Use what you have. Got plastic baggies but want to swap for beeswax wrap or another eco friendly alternative? Don’t just throw out them out! Use them as much as you can until they can no longer be used, or give them to someone you *know* will use them. Same goes for anything, including single use cups you may have, tissues, napkins, etc.

    I am soon moving into my own space and I am excited to have the opportunity to implement as many habits as I can to create as little waste as possible in my new space. I know that, especially now, it can be hard with stores not allowing folks to bring in outside bags and containers, but I plan to do my best within my budget to buy from the local farmers market and find alternative resources. I got super happy when I found this series because it had a lot of little things that won't be hard to implement once I live alone. Not all of us have the money, the time, the physical ability,.... to implement every change, and the sustainability communitiy (in my opinion) tends to shame people for that, so THANK YOU! Do I have to use paper plates some days because I am quite ill and facing having to do dishes as well will send me over the edge that day? Yes! Will I go out on my good days and pick up other peoples' litter? Also yes! Everybody does what they can, and that is important to accept. We learned recently our nearby supermarket would give us the fat scraps trimmed off their beef and/or pork. If no one requests it, they throw it away. We have been rendering and purifying it, making tallow soap, tallow candles, and using tallow for cooking. I diy’d moisturizer from it by whipping it. Works great!!

    74 is extremely important and one of the most common things that turn into a trap.
    Going zero or less waste doesnt mean "toss everything that is not sustainable and buy sustainable things", it means use as much as you can of it, push its life to the very far you can and only throw it (responsibly, if possible) when it's no longer usable/reusable, and, only if you actually need a replacement, buy a sustainable, durable alternative, always checking of it can be bought second hand, borrowed, gifted or so.

    Such a positive approach, my family are so resistant to my eco friendlier suggestions because 'Eco warriors' in the media can put a lot of shame on people just following the 'norm' but all I want is to be part of the solution not the problem. Being Eco friendly doesn't have to be an all or nothing idea, small steps in the right direction are still steps in the right direction.

    My son is now 13. When he was born in 2006 we lived in London and I used Terry nappies. The liners unfortunately you flushed or went to landfill but the nappies went in a bucket and were washed when full. The nursery was fine with using them and I supplied a wet bag to bring used nappies home. When I bought them, I kept the receipt which the midwife signed, I sent to the council and I was sent £50. Which helped with washing. Finally I get there are busy parents but my partner and I were full time police officers at the time working g 10 hour days and it wasn't hard at all. When my son was out of nappies we used them as flannels, rags etc. So much cheaper and more ethical. X
