A sustainable period routine is a game changer!!! I love not having to wonder if I need to buy more pads before my next cycle.

Same! It saves so much stress knowing that you already and always have all you need. Been so many times that I had like only one tampon or pad left and all stores already closed.. Sucks so much. Only wins when it comes to sustainable period products, truly!

I switched to the cup plus the underwear after watching these videos about 6 months ago. It's saved me so much money, so much stress (the only thing I get stressed about is washing the underwear as I don't have a washing machine in my flat yet) and I feel so much more comfortable. I also love not worrying about running out too. Being caught short was the worst

    • @Lolly74079

@Liz Gabriel Period underwear might be a good idea. Black pairs fully pass as regular underwear with a slightly different fabric so they can be thrown in with regular dark washing (at least my Primark ones can). If you buy them from a physical store like Primark, you can easily buy them while out with friends instead of having a parcel intercepted. You can also pair either a light or heavy flow pair with pads on heavy days if you want to reduce waste but also need to keep appearances up if she buys supplies for you.
EDIT: You're not supposed to use fabric conditioner with period underwear, I think it either wears them down quicker or ruins them. I'm not really sure which
I'm really sorry you had that awful reaction. I know some people don't like the idea of the reuseable pads due them finding the idea of having to store the used pads in their bag (one of the reasons I didn't pick them actually) or rinsing them, but calling another person disgusting for using them is completely different and horrible.

    • @lydiajoystuart4082
      @lydiajoystuart4082 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@Liz Gabriel I would also recommend period underwear. I haven't used them personally but my female best friend swears by them. They are easier to use and I believe can be washed in a washing machine. There are a couple different brands out there. I'd encourage you to do some research.
I am so sorry to hear that you were having such a bad experience. That's really tough. It's hard to hear criticism from loved ones. Also don't be discouraged about not being able to use a cup I’ve never worn a tampon and I tried to make the cup work and it didnt work.

@@Lolly74079 I recently watched a tik tok saying if you can help it, don't use fabric conditioner/softener ever. But more importantly never to use it with workout and other clothes because it takes away the absorbing aspect which is definitely why you wouldn't want to use it with a period product.

Some of the supermarkets in my town started making bundles of fruit or veggies that are very ripe, a bit beaten up or have a few brown spots, they put them in a bag in the reduced section and it's a good adea i think, better than doing nothing. You can get a huge bag of mixed fruit or veggies at a low price, and i use the fruits that are very ripe in baking or chop them up and freeze them. Same for veggies, if I don't use them up i freeze them. My country is quite behind on the sustainability stuff, we're barely just figuring out sorting our trash. But at least it's a step.

We have a cute little station that has “cutie” oranges from bags that were ripped open, and single bananas for free, a healthy snack for adults and kids alike to make shopping a little bit better. All it took was a letter to the produce manager because I noticed they were throwing away singles of fruit, and it’s a great advertisement bonus for moms shopping with kiddos

You should NOT get PREGNANT or get someone PREGNANT if you truly worry about the ENVIRONMENT or CLIMATE CHANGE. Use Daily birth control pills and protection. Saying you use paper straws or only have 1 child or drive an Electric car shows you are not being true and essentially a FAKE Environmentalist or nature lover. Do it not out of pressure but if you want to do the right thing as someone who cares about the Environment.

Instead of a bidet, I have a sprayer (imagine what you have on your kitchen sink to spray things off) that attaches to the tank. It's pretty common in other countries (e.g. countries in northern Africa) in public toilets especially. I got it online, but you can also DIY by stopping at a local hardware store. It's awesome because you can control the spray and flow very easily. So that's another option in case bidets have too little control for you haha.
I also use "family cloth" instead of TP. And it's pretty hygienic considering I spray off beforehand. So I highly recommend that as well. :)

Your second point about not tossing what you own to buy new, sustainable products was the best. It also let's you slide into a different life style or life style change despite what it is. If you start to make the conversion before completely running out, you can try the change and/ or new product then make adaptations before complete,y running out. Sliding into a change often let's you slide into financial and effort/ labor/ behavioral changes too. When you find an alternative you're happy with committing to fully, you can gift what you prefer to nolonger use rather than tossing too.

Wishing you a fantastic 2022 !

I got my first set of Thinx a couple months ago and I put them to the test. I have a pretty heavy period especially for the first 3-4 days. I tried out their super absorbant options and I tried them with no back up and it was amazing. The only style that didn’t work for me as well as I hoped were the boyshort ones and that’s because the cut didn’t work well for me and cause some leaking. Other than that loved it.
Also love the plaine Items. I’ve gotten their small hand lotions and spray hand sanitizer and they smell amazing. I like minty scents and they are great.

And remember not to order a bunch of things to be shipped to your house... because even if you order items that are good for the planet having them shipped is not.
I had Chico bags but they snagged a bunch and wore thin quickly so I replaced them with Blu Bags from RockFlower... after about 15 years I had to re-stitche a seam. I wash them after each use and they still hold well. They are a bit bigger that Chico grocery bags they are almost the size of the Vita bag. Just a better size and more useful overall.

My lunch bag every work day for a 12 hour day: two Mason jars filled with water, an apple, a ceramic mug, single size french press, two tiny containers with my plant based coffee creamer and my ground coffee, lidded container with lunch food, a container with berries or grapes, and fork/spoon/knife from the kitchen drawer. A lot, yes, but I bring everything home and wash it at night and refill for work the next day. I NEVER take disposables. This has been a financial and ethical game changer for me.

For the toothpaste tube, I don't quite understand how they are recyclable. In my area, you are supposed to clean out the containers before recycling. Is that possible with a fully aluminum toothpaste tube? How does one do that? I'm asking to know, I try to recycle as much as possible, so I am open to it. I'm just curious how that actually is supposed to work with a toothpaste tube.

I can't completely make them switch away from paper towels, either, but I just bought a couple packs of microfiber wipes that I can get the kids to use instead. Who Gives A Crap also makes paper towels! Also, I made a part-time switch to reusable "paper" towels (really they're made of flannel) in the kitchen and I honestly love them. I keep a little basket on the kitchen counter so I can just toss the dirty ones in there and then put them in the laundry when it's full. They're not suitable for everything, but they are great for a lot, and I figure that even if I use them 50-75% of the time it's better than using paper towels all the time.
