    I’ve been natural 3 1/2 years and my hair is beginning to pass bra strap length. I have my hair in a low manipulation space buns with the end’s tucked that’s covered with a satin scarf covered with a Bennie 99 percent of the time. I only uncover my hair for 2 hours on wash days because I know I will be applying that moisture back into my hair that day. My goal is healthy waist length hair. Thank you for sharing.

    I’m not tryna come for you, just provide some honest constructive criticism-there’s a LOT wrong with this method. I don’t want anybody new on their natural hair growth journey to come across this video and get discouraged. This is an example of protective styling taken to the point of being impractical and unsustainable.
    1. “tertiary” protective styling isn’t necessary unless you’re in inclement/harsh weather conditions. The scalp is skin and needs air flow to thrive. Putting your hair in twists and/or an updo (depending on length) is sufficient.
    2. The goal is not to hold onto moisture as long as possible, the goal is to regularly replenish your hair with moisture. Natural hair thrives when it’s washed and conditioned every 1-2 weeks and when products with long lasting moisture/protection are applied. Grease is an effective sealant for slowing down moisture loss and protecting hair from daily wear and tear. Most women with long natural hair broke their plateau with these simple methods, without keeping their hair under wraps 99% of the time.
    3. It is possible your hair isn’t growing at this stage because of buildup, an unhealthy scalp environment, or ineffective products, and not because you abandoned tertiary protective styling. I’d look at tweaking your wash day regimen if you’re noticing slower hair growth or a loss of length retention.
    4. The hat may work for you, but it’s not realistic to give that advice to other naturals. Your natural journey is meant to be enjoyed, you should never sacrifice looking and feeling good about your hair for the sake of growth. At the end of the day, as women our sense of style and beauty still matters to us. Few people are going to be okay with constantly wearing a “bummy” look to work, school or social gatherings, nor should they be. You can be stylish and take pride in your hair while retaining length.

      I’m glad you mentioned this. The biggest reasons I went natural in the first place was so I could wear my natural curls, coils and fluff in all of its glory everyday. It’s a huge Afro now and it’s so beautiful but I felt like I had to twist it, put it in braids or tuck it away based on what I was seeing other people say (I don’t like way twists/braids styles look on me really. Other people can rock it but it’s not my preference although they are nice protective styles). I am also aware that location does play a big role too. But I wanted to grow my hair while wearing it out in an Afro. I spray it every day to fluff it back up to a fro and go or a high puff. It looks so good on me but I worry because a lot of people say that it’s not a good way to grow your hair. Idk what to do lol

      as long as you’re seeing length retention and breakage/knots aren’t too big of a problem, I don’t see what’s wrong with continuing what works for you. online chatter can lead us down a path that is totally incompatible with our hair and lifestyle.
      I will say that I like to keep my hair twisted a lot of the time and Ive see extra length retention that way. But it’s important to enjoy our hair so I let it out when I feel like it. that usually looks like keeping it twists or updos most of the week and wearing it out 1-2 days in the week. Some weeks it’s more like every day and that’s perfectly okay.

      @taylorqueen4931 the answer is to do what you like! If you value wearing your hair out as the afro you love, then do that :) my advice is for the people in my situation: girls with my hair type who want longer hair but have found their hair to be stuck. If your hair is still growing while you wear it the way you like, then you have nothing to worry about ☺️✨

      I’ll concede to your point about the scalp needing air, because there’s mixed research on that.
      About my second statement, I really think you misunderstood what I wrote. I never said you can over water natural hair. My point was exactly the opposite, the best way to keep hair moisturized is to regularly replenish it with water. Your hair can’t hold onto moisture if you’re not giving it that, and the hair needs regular wash days to be fully replenished. Moisturizing hair in between washes is not enough if your hair is only being washed infrequently like once a month.

    When you say wearing your " hair out" do you include twist out, braid out? Bc for me those styles are also protective styles, and i have seen women growing their hair to waist length

      My scalp won't let me be great. I need to shampoo every 7-10 days. I know those mini twists are going to tangle with the constant wetting of my ultra-fine hair!!

      @@marleyhill34I have scalp issues as well, but I’ve started using aloe vera juice in a spray bottle to cleanse my scalp while in mini twists. With that, I’ve been able to stretch my wash days to once every 3 weeks.

    • @rosam674
      @rosam674 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      The necessity of tertiary protective styling depends on how desperately you want to grow your hair. IF having your hair out is more important to you then you have to give up on the prospects of more length retention. You can't have it both ways for some curl patterns.

      I disagree, for most people’s hair protective styling and updos are enough. Wrapping up the hair constantly from the elements is not necessary unless you have extraordinarily fragile/damaged hair or live in super harsh climate. The scalp needs to breathe.

      I hear you. You can mix it up by pulling it up and wrapping the majority while leaving cute bangs out. Even doing that a couple days out the week will make a difference. Also, keeping it wrapped more at home and making sure your hats have silk lining. Make the regimen work for you.

    What’s the point of having protective styles if you never wear your hair out. This doesn’t feel right to me. Why is it that other races of women can wear their hair naturally and it will grow, but black women have to put it away in a protective style in order for it to grow?

    • @nethaniapierre8149
      @nethaniapierre8149 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      1.) Our hair isn't like other races of hair and it doesn't act like any other race of hair that I know. At the end of the day you can wear your hair out in a protective style like twists or braids without extensions if you want. The whole point is just to minimize breakage (which involves protecting the ends of your hair, being mindful of the tools you use etc.)however you can. And protective styling helps with that. Of course if you don't want to do that, that is fine. She is just showing what worked for her AT the time. 2.) Remember (she said )when she went natural there was not that much info on how to take care of type 4 hair. She had to figure out how to break her growth plateau herself and she's sharing it since we want to know.
      3.) Some black women have no problem wearing out their hair and growing it while some find that wearing out their hair often tends to cause unnecessary breakage. No head of hair is the same. Whatever works best for you and your hair that will help you reach your hair goal is what matters. I understand where you're coming from though.

      Ok so! I came back from the "ready your commenting fingers" video, and I want to apologize! It wasn't right to come for Cocoa under this video as she is just trying to help other 4c girls who struggle with length retention, by sharing what worked for HER.
      I will say that I did genuinely feel frustrated with my hair at the time of this comment because I wished I could just wear my hair out and retain length at the same time.
      After some research and introspection, I realized how black hair is different for a reason (going off on a tangent here...) African hair evolved to be coily to protect our scalps from sun rays, but also in a way the breakage is beneficial: If the afro got too big and long, there would be less airflow and our scalps would overheat. For people of African descent, for the most part, our hair was made to be braided and twisted, and it was made to break when worn out, for our sake.
      I also noticed that other ethnicities don't wear their hair as it grows out of their scalps, and some also have protective styles. Indian women, for example, also wear their hair braided most of the time due to the thickness of their hair, and so do Middle Eastern women. So its not just black women who protective style for their hair's health.
      ANYWAYS sorry for the long paragraph but I am sorry Cocoa!

    Thank you! How often did you wash and redo your mini twists? Did you wash while in mini twists? Also you did wear your beanie when working out (if you workout)?

    • @cocoainkyoto
      @cocoainkyoto  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I washed them once a month and redid them once every 1-2 months. Going 2 months to redo them is definitely too long so I would recommend every 3-4 weeks if you can manage.
      I don’t work out in the beanie because I sweat too much, so for times like that (and like summer), I’ll just stick with my secondary protective style 🙂
