    I grew up with pipe smoke as my grandfather was a pipe smoker. I especially love the smell of raw tobacco. I used to go into my grandfather's cupboard under the stairs, open his tobacco jar and very much enjoy the fruity fragrance. I also used to go along with my nan to Youing's in Barnstaple to buy more tobacco for my grandfather. I used to love the fragrance in there of all the different tobacco. Seeing all the pipes, lighters and Swiss Army knives on display in the window was another delight. Great days!

      My great uncle smoked a pipe and my grandmother would frequently have some of her relatives over for Sunday dinner, after which everyone would sit on the front porch and tell stories about their "younger" days. Uncle Wickliffe would lite his pipe and I still remember the lovely fragrance, even though it was 60 years ago and I was a five year-old child. No electronic devices, just conversation and the pleasant smell of Uncle's pipe.

    Most definitely a 'Prince' pipe shape that Mr Tati has in those photos Richard. Seemed to be rather popular in the 30's and 40's in particular, but for those that prefer a smaller bowl this lovely shape has always been attractive. Happy puffing to you and the lovely Julia. Cheers

      Agreed…thats a prince

      My favourite shape, especially with a traditional small chamber - a piece of folded flake lasts ages and tastes lovely.
      Oh, that's not a Prince - the stem should be 1/4 bent and that's straight (or even curved up!).

    • @eddiejr540
      @eddiejr540 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @ …the prince is the shape of the bowl (obviously)…I’ve seen them with straight stems and slightly bent stems…there’s nothing really etched in stone with pipes, a lot is left to interpretation…but I’m no expert

    My late Father was a pipe smoker. Had a special mixture made for him at the tobacconist. Collected it every Friday. I was given a sugar mouse too. Saturday mornings was pipe cleaning day without fail! The pipe rack was hallowed ground…..

    Oh dear ! I must tell you this one, my favorite Jacques Tati is Monsieur Hulot`s Holiday. I had only seen it once back in the 1960s. then I noticed one Christmas it was being shown on Christmas day, this was I think 1992. I was spending Xmas at the house of a newly acquired girl friend , also her parents were there. Well , we were all having dinner in the dinning room , when I noticed it was time for this rare showing of Jacques Tati`s film. so I slipped away into the front room , made myself comfortable and switched on the set, I was about five minutes into the film, when they all trouped in as If I didn`t exist, and switched over to of all horrors Birds of a feather, THE CRETINS ! needless to say, that relationship didn`t go whole mile !

      @davidp4456 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ah yes, I saw that too. On BBC 2 as I recall. It had been on a couple of years earlier as well. They were a bit obsessed with French film in those days. Jean de Floret was another they liked to show at Christmas.

    I would say a Prince shape pipe as well. If you like 965 you should try Petersons early morning pipe and squadron leader by Samuel Gawith. Cheers Ron

    The pipe that has the left over gunk from the last bowl. Even though I cleaned it, I missed an area and changes the next bowl. I have slowed down and clean a little more to ensure my next bowl, is going to taste the way it should. It's a journey.

    Morning Mr Vobes, I have found the following information in reference to your search to the Pipe in question.
    (Yorkshire Pipes was a brand sold exclusively through Sears Roebuck Catalogs, as seen in this 1941-42 catalog page. They were made in France of Algerian Briar, and some of the model names were Bond Street, Royal,)
    I do hope this helps, have a great Sunday.

    Nice Savinelli! I just started Pipes about seven months ago, cigars more recently. I have been enjoying them both! People have different routines and methods for cleaning their pipes. For me, I at least do a quick swipe with a pipe cleaner through my pipe after I smoke it each time. I have a mixture of 2/3 Everclear and 1/3 mint Listerine and just barely dab the end of the pipe cleaner in that sanitizing solution before putting it through the pipe. You do need to be careful not to get any on the briar as it can take the finish off. Best wishes on your Pipe journey!

    My favourite handmade pipes are Petersons, with 965 being one of my favourite blends. If you enjoy that, try Nightcap. Fair warning: It's strong. Savinelli are definitely up there in the fancy bracket, though. Keep up the great videos!

    I'm delighted that you chose Tati, my favorite film director, as the subject matter. Might I also suggest Maigret (the versions portrayed by Michael Gabon). (isn't the similarity between Magritte and Maigret something...) I like the way you speak of the benefits of pipe smoking, reaching back to our soul, our being. Is it the pipe or the smoke, or both. Thanks again and looking forward to more. Cheers from Southern California.

    The reason I followed your channel is because you are not like all the others using all those terms and just be a 1yr newbie enjoying the smoke. Doing your own thing, which I find refreshing and I have found to be your personality. I just got my first and was looking for someone who just enjoyed what they were doing and hadn’t been tainted by the club. Why no, I don’t own a tamper (gasp) and my pipe stays lit lol

    Richard, get a small jar and put some rubbing alcohol into it. Then each time you clean the tar out of your pipe, clean the implement in the jar where the tar will dissolve. Over time the fluid will be strong enough to dilute in water with a dash of liquid soap, then use as a natural spray against whitefly and red spider mites in the greenhouse/polytunnel.

    Monsieur Hulot's Holiday was interesting in that it was apparently centred at a resort on the French side of the English Channel which was popular with English tourists. You can hear a BBC radio programme in the dining room scene.
    I haven't seen all the Monsieur Hulot films but "Mon Oncle" was amusing. It was a parody of our obsession with modern architecture & technology. Hulot stays with his brother & family. His brother is something of a social climber & has the modern house & gadgets to prove it. Mr Hulot makes friends with his nephew. 😂👍 🇬🇧 🇫🇷

    Maigret, the French police detective was famous for smoking his pipe, one could almost smell the French tobacco he would be smoking.
    The pipe shape "the Prince" is what you thought it is, and this shape is supposedly suited to French tobacco pipe smoking, getting the best taste from 'Chacom' tobacco and pipes, both of which can be purchased from British online tobacconists.
    Briar pipes, are supposed to be given at least, if not more than three full days of rest, to allow the briar to fully dry, before smoking again, and if this routine is not strictly followed can result in poor smoking qualities, not helping the smoker, neither any such guests within the vicinity. Of course a meerschaum can be smoked continuously without detriment to pipe or tobacco.
    Always keep your pipes scrupulously clean, and aired, and you'll get the best out of them.
    Inspector Maigret smokes a 'Prince' pipe.
    Hope that knowledge helps.
