I have been a pipe smoker on and off for about 35-40 years. Beautiful hobby. After reading "The smoke screens: The truth about tobacco" I have no guilt for doing this any longer. This year I grew tobacco in my garden in Kent for the first time. 20 plants gave me nearly 1,5 kg of ready to smoke goodness. I had to process it, to achieve desirable qualities, but final result it outstanding. Thank you Richard for the video.
I cannot begin to explain how happy your comment made me - but it has and thank you for the smile you gave me. To know that others also grow what they want to use is somehow incredibly pleasing. Guilt has no place in an honest endeavour anyway.
My father has been growing his own tobacco for 25 years, he rolls cigarettes with it though, I now have to roll them for him as he is 89 and his fingers are stiff.. He smokes around 40 a day 😁

Great video! I have been smoking pipes on and off for 45 years, first when I was 25yrs old and somewhat during my 40's to early 50's, but now that I'm approaching 70 yrs of age, I now smoke 1-2 bowls a day and absolutely enjoy it. Nothing in this world calms me better than lighting and enjoying different tobaccos. In today's crazy world I needed something to calm me as I struggle with chronic high blood pressure and since starting up my pipe smoking about 6 months ago, my blood pressure readings have dropped markedly to a normal range. I sleep better, can think clearly, plus it's a great pastime. I can get a bit anxious and high strung at times, but when I light my pipe my shoulders just drop and I can relax. If you need a way to relax, mastering smoking a pipe can be a real lifesaver for many. Think about this: many famous pipe smokers have lived into their 90's. Works for me!

I started smoking a pipe at age 16, many laughed at me but I didn't care. I'm 71 now and still smoking my pipe, nobody laughs now and I still don't care.
I’ve been enjoying a pipe for nearly a decade. I did take a break from it but when I returned, I kept saying that I like how I am as a person when I smoke my pipe. To smoke a pipe means that you take time out of your day to slow down and take pleasure in something simple. I enjoy collecting my favorite blends and aging them. I don’t have very many pipes but I have plenty and each one is like an old friend and just like you remember meeting a person I remember what was going on when I got a particular pipe. I wouldn’t say I need a pipe but it gives me something to look forward to no matter what else is happening that day. I think that is incredibly valuable in regulating my mental state.
I never got into pipes back when I was a smoker, but I loved my self rolled cigarettes, stopped smoking in '93, but still miss it, not so much the smoking but the enjoyment of the whole process of rolling my smokes.
I 'fell' in to pipe smoking from cigarettes attempting to bypass the paper. What a pleasant surprise when I discovered the various pipe smoking forums and learned not to inhale! It only took me a couple of weeks with my Missouri Meerschaum Legend to catch on. That was a little over 10 yrs ago and I've had a blast learning and collecting. I retired, got sick, went back to smoking due to stress back in 2013-2014. I've quit cigs cold turkey for a year or more and sometimes much longer several times. Now? I am at peace.
I’ve smoked a pipe on and off since I was 15 years old, I’m now 87 and still enjoying the relaxing pleasure it brings., there are so many different pipe tobacco blends out there it’s probably confusing but you soon learn your favourite ones , I like an American style aromatic occasionally but tend to stick to just a few “English” blends {non aromatic} with just the tobacco flavour and no toppings added like cherry or chocolate but they all give great pleasure in there turn .
As a pipe cigar and cigarette smoker I totally agree cigars and pipes while different are kindred spirits. They are relaxation, meditative and a way of enhancing or escaping life or a situation. They bring calm pleasure and the enjoyment of fine quality tobacco, as well as a connection to the older ways. Cigarettes are just a quick fix for an addict and pretty much their only pleasure is in releaving the pangs of addiction for a while and are I no way close to cigars or especially pipes

Doctors are very ill informed on the topic; they are simply told when students to lump pipes in with cigarettes, and have zero research behind them when they pronounce on it. The ONLY scientific study was in 1969 by the American Surgeon General who looked at the relative longevity of pipe vs cigarette smokers and non-smokers. Non-smokers were taken as the standard at 1. Cigarette smokers only lasted to 0.8. Pipe smokers made it to 1.2! The survey is still available on line if you search diligently. The study speculated that this was due among other things to reduced stress and so on, but gave no other reason.

Hi Richard, I have been smoking pipes for over 15 years. I agree with all your musings, even the spiritual one, I think most pipe smokers try all different tobaccos over their smoking life and usually come to the one tobacco which they always come back to. I don't know if you have tried Erinmore, but that is the only tobacco I buy. I do grow my own tobacco in my garden, about twenty plants a year which subsidises the bought tobacco. It doesn't have the flavor of the Erinmore but it is the cleanest tobacco you can smoke. Keep smoking the pipe!
I smoke pipes and cigars as well and I watch lots of the pipe and cigar content here on YT but I have to say, this is probably the best "why I smoke a pipe" videos I've seen. And I've seen a lot. Not sure what it is about this one but you just nailed it. Maybe it's that your English. The English just have a way with certain things. As an American, I love to see an Englishman being unapologetically English. I think pipe smoking is a start to how we can rediscover and take back our culture that we're losing in both of our respective countries. Thanks for sharing!
I used to chew tobacco and smoke cigarettes to some degree. I smoked a pipe while in. Stuff from time to time and felt that same feeling that I was too young. I’m in my mid 50s now and I picked up a pipe last year and it really hurt my lungs even though I don’t inhale. I gave it a rest as I got sick around the same time with the flu or covid or something. I’m going fishing with some friends this weekend and I’m giving it a go again. I sincerely hope that it doesn’t cause me discomfort again as I’m finally “old” enough and I want to enjoy it for all the reasons you describe.
Hello, nice to see your video, the first time. So I subsribed immediately.... I fully agree with you in all points. I started in the age of 59 years with pipe smoking, even smoking at all. I'm smoking now for 2 years. It's a nice hobby with a lot of background knowledge. It is relaxing and I enjoy the smell of different tobaccos in meanwhile 55 different pipes. Additionally I began to create videos about this hobby to be also a member of the YTPC. May your pipe never get cold. Greetings from Stuttgart (Germany) Jürgen
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I don’t actually know any pipe smokers so watching this let me feel as if I were with an old friend sharing the pleasures of smoking a pipe. Rick-Tacoma Washington USA. Thank you! Thank you!
It’s totally not addictive, I smoke a pipe but I often go months without smoking it. I will sit in my shed on an old armchair among the spiders and the faint smell of petrol from the mower and enjoy a bowl of early morning pipe and it is bliss.

Agree. I love my pipes (especially my meers) but with a disapproving wife and two small daughters I don’t often enjoy at home. Which maybe makes each bowl that more resplendent
Congratulations, sir! You may have just produced your very own introduction to the You Tube Pipe Community. Hope you make more pipe videos as they would be very welcome in the YTPC. "Warning labels blasted all over the blooming labels...!" 😆😆 Loved that.)
Interesting to watch this. Very informative and you definitely captured the spirit of smoking a pipe. It might be interesting to do a vid on artisan pipes. 😁
Thanks for sharing this great video! I started smoking in my teens (cigarettes), but changed over to smoking a pipe about 60 years ago! You make all the valid points and I would recommend anyone who asks "why?" to check out your work! Thanks once again!!!
I started smoking a pipe when I was 17 years old, I am 63 now, I always like smoking a pipe for relaxation, I don't smoke my pipes like I used to, but I am getting back to it now, like you said a lot of men are not smoking pipes like they used to, especially here in America, witch is a shame, you're find some you tube channels here in America on men smoking pipes and it's very interesting how much some people still enjoy the pipe, I hope it starts to be a regular thing, it's also a shame that alot of stores don't carry pipes and tobacco, happy smoking...
I'm new to pipe smoking ( less than 2 months - yes that new ) my age- let's say I'm " Seasoned " still trying to get used to it , learn it - but I enjoy it 😊 - I'm an aromatic man - thanks for this vid. I'd like more pipe vids
It's so straight-forward to grow your own ciggy and pipe tobacco. The real herb has been revered and sacred to many cultures historically, because it's psychoactive but this is removed when commercially processed.
I have been smoking the pipe for 46 years and I can assure you I only smoke a Peterson spiggot pipe Peterson is the oldest pipe manufacturers in the world and they are based in Ireland🇮🇪🍀🇮🇪🍀🇮🇪🍀🇮🇪🍀🇮🇪🍀 and I absolutely love the smoke I get from it... I take my time with my pipe unlike most things in life my pipe is my constant companion wherever I go it goes but listen to Richard on pipe smoking I feel I will just bore you all if I go into everything anyway smoke a pipe enjoy life😊
I remember my grandad, great grandad, and great uncle smoking pipes. I loved the smell even as a child. I started smoking a pipe after my dad's passing 5 years ago.
I was very lucky to obtain an Antique briar pipe made by B.B.B. It has a clay lined bowl and a Hallmarked Silver collar on the stem dating it to 1909 (must have been a rather expensive gentleman's accessory when new!) When I smoke it from time to time, I think about all the world events and changes its seen. I find that link going back over 100 years has a meditative and spiritual aspect for me.
I started smoking a pipe after watching your first video about pipes. If you can pick up some Gawith Ennerdale Flake. You and Julie will like this one I love it.
Really enjoyed your video and liked your personality. You sound like a man that is deep in thoughts and use your brain, as few do these days. 😂 thanks for your time 😊
I started smoking again a couple of years ago and decided to have a go at growing tobacco as well. It's very easy if you have a polytunnel, it grows like a rocket! The problems arrive when it comes to drying and fermenting. We made lots of mistakes the first year (last year) but still ended up with some reasonably smokeable stuff, this year's crop looks to be coming on well and we are hoping for some great results, and all for the price of a few seeds and a little effort. If you want to have a go at growing it I will help just send me a message
It’s great that you aren’t addicted and while I think it’s logical that pipe tobacco is safer than cigarettes, saying it isn’t addictive is just incorrect and potentially damaging. Your morning cup of coffee is addictive to varying degrees.. to anyone reading this, particularly younger generations , please proceed with caution.
I enjoy the occasional cigar , the same with a pipe for change of pace, l had a Grandfather who was a pipe smoker,I loved the aroma,it's just wonderful,I bought a pouch of Borkum Riff because it was the only blend I could remember,my Grandfather smoked Beirs Dark but it's such an old blend I thought the tobacconist might give me a funny look and tell that it hadn't been around for many years
I enjoy an occasional bowl, would still call myself a non-smoker, and only started in my forties, thinking about my father who smoked a Falcon. Got myself one and had a go. As you say, contemplative and unhurried, which is how i try to live anyway. Thanks.
We threw all my late Grandads pipes away after his death in 1995...Some of them were gorgeous looking pieces and very interesting style's.R.I.P , Grandad, 1910-1995.
One thing about pipe smoking that is so different from cigarettes is that pipes last, sometimes generations, whereas a cigarette is discarded and quick, and tastes horrible. My pipes are old friends…..or new ones as I ordered a new one today 🫢
It really is sad that they ruin your tins that way. Here in america (for now at least) they still have the beautiful art and brand logos, most unadulterated. I keep at least 1 empty tin of each blend i smoke. One day when i have a house my study/library/smoking lounge maybe will have them all mounted up around the ceiling line
Ah! Lovely to see you smoke a pipe. If ever you are in Hampshire ( Basingstoke area). It would be a pleasure to have a smoke and chat. I have some American tobacco for you to try. :) I have a TH-cam channel with only a few videos at the moment. Some with smoking a pipe :). Take care. Jason/ Basingstoke
Thank you for this video, I took up the pipe a few years ago… still experimenting but love my beauties from Peterson, Ser Jacopo and Mark Tinsky. I’m found of the burley and dark cavendish blends…..
Had a great little shop here in Bangor north wales, but sadly closed now. It had many big jars full of different bacco. I have a brand new pipe that i bought for show to leave in the Daimler i had at the time, but have been thinking of using it instead of smoking roll-ups, but i have no idea where to get pipe bacco any more, or what I'd like.
Thankyou for another great video. I have entered the world of pipes at the age of 69 and am loving all the Different aspects that you have wonderfully explained. Like you not every day but when I fancy. In a nut shell, if the politicians tell you to go that way, then do the opposite.😂
I have a Peterson's tankard pipe inherited from my dear father. I'm smoking it while watching this video. I did not know they made their own tobacco. Thx
Well said. I agree with everything you said. I can go a week without nicotine and have no problem at all. I have not found it to be any more addictive than chocolate or pizza. But every time I smoke a pipe I love it.
I enjoy my pipe with fruity flavoured tobaccos and look forward to showing the few mini pipes I have. The best part is relaxing and conversing gently over a bowlful with you 💚💙💜 🚬 hmm no pipe emoji!
The nicotine from a cigarette hits different and I don't like it. I use snus every day and it's a pouch with tobacco you put under your upper lip. Very addictive and I find pipesmoking addictive as well. But I enjoy it so I will continue.
I’m 35, Ive smoked cigarettes for 23 years. I wouldn’t recommend cigarette smoking to anyone, purely because the ‘tobacco’ is extremely low quality and worst of all, impregnated with all sorts of additives, some of which are much more addictive than nicotine and obviously harmful when inhaled. I personally have definitely consumed far too many cigarettes, which is starting to noticeably affect my health, so I recently decided to try pipe smoking. If I think back I’ve not really derived much pleasure from cigarettes, especially considering the addictive cycle they put you in, while also having a somewhat caffeine like effect on the mind. The real problem with cigarettes is it’s very hard for most, to maintain a moderate consumption of them, due to the aforementioned reasons and their nature of being very quick to smoke. I think you could spend a lifetime smoking a few cigs a day and see negligible health effects and maybe some benefits. In contrast pipe smoking really is an absolute pleasure in every way. The meditative state it promotes and the tobacco probably also creates, is exactly what our society needs. I also feel the same about cigars, which I also enjoy a couple of times a week. Pipes and cigars put you in a contemplative and relaxed state, where you can really think, exactly where the powers that be don’t want you. They want you scared, anxious, angry, confused and reactionary. It also seems pipe tobacco and cigars, probably have some physical health benefits consumed moderately. I’d would thoroughly recommend trying pipe and cigar smoking to anyone, especially if you’ve been told you’ve ‘got anxiety’ or ‘ADHD’ or suchlike.
I have been smoking cigars since I turned 18 and pipes since I was around 21, and now I am a few short months off of 28, I don't smoke cigarettes and I have come to the conclusion after nearly 10 years of smoking quality tobacco that quality tobacco isn't addictive in any way. A couple of years ago I got really busy with work and for a whole year I simply forgot to smoke, could a cigarette smoker do that? I don't know what chemicals they put in cigarette tobacco but it is clear to me that those are the reason for addiction. I hope that in the future our government being the UK government finally sees reason and once more allows the people to pursue what ever hobbies and interests and habits ( which aren't clearly immoral or harming others ) they want without being molested by their laws and taxes.
Over the years I have found that tobacco/nicotine is habitual rather than addictive. But I guess everyone is different. Been smoking more than 40 years on and off but never tried a pipe. Maybe I should 🤔
Oddly enough, I spent ages a couple of weeks ago looking for a number of pipes I had acquired over the years from goodness only knows where or why and can't find those either. I did find one whilst looking for something else, but no luck yet with the others. Not that I intend to start smoking a piipe though I love the smell from one, but if I did I think I'd use it for coltsfoot - the tea made from that, if one has need of its healing properties, is easier though.

No, similar concept to Cigars- the smoke lingers in the mouth and exhaled. Like cigars, if you accidentally inhale it, you start coughing.

I think pipe smoking is a start to how we can rediscover and take back our culture that we're losing in both of our respective countries. Thanks for sharing!
I love that Peterson Early Morning! Welcome back to the enjoyment of your pipes!
Hello,
nice to see your video, the first time.
Greetings from Stuttgart (Germany)
Jürgen
Hello sir 😂 greetings from Austria 🇦🇹🔥☁️☁️☁️👋

I just found your page. Exelent video.
I really found it near to how I think about smoking pipe. Thanks and really hope fore frequent videos.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I don’t actually know any pipe smokers so watching this let me feel as if I were with an old friend sharing the pleasures of smoking a pipe.
Rick-Tacoma Washington USA.
Thank you!
Thank you!
do you smoke? if so, any preference on tobacco and pipe?
It’s totally not addictive, I smoke a pipe but I often go months without smoking it. I will sit in my shed on an old armchair among the spiders and the faint smell of petrol from the mower and enjoy a bowl of early morning pipe and it is bliss.
Do you inhale while smoking a pipe ? I like smoking cigars but do not inhale obviously ..
No, I just draw it in to the mouth using the breath method
@@JosephStealin ok, thanks and all the best in these insane times , freind
Very eloquently put. 38 year old american viewer from Louisiana. Just getting into it.
I started pipe smoking around 3 years ago and absolutely love it - its so nostalgic - I think I was born into the wrong age 😂
If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend a documentary called "Father the Flame".
It’s a great video if you can get a copy
I'm new to pipe smoking ( less than 2 months - yes that new ) my age- let's say I'm " Seasoned " still trying to get used to it , learn it - but I enjoy it 😊 - I'm an aromatic man - thanks for this vid. I'd like more pipe vids
Great video, you are 100% right. Smoking aa Pipe is the best thing. Thank you.
ps…I bought my first pipe at 16 and I’m now 71! Great years!
Like a Japanese tea ceremony
great video and presentation. i'm currently trying to switch from cigarettes to pipes.
Started smoking a pipe two days ago!
A lovely and thoughtful video on pipe smoking
I love my pipes…my James Upshall Dublin is my favorite followed closely by my Dunhill billiard👍
Posh!
@@bingbong7316 …not really…the Dunhill I bought used…hahaha
You have excellent taste.
Pipe smoker here. Enjoyed watching 👍🏻🍂🔥💨
His is a most delightful reflection. Thank you.
Fantastic video! Hope to see more pipe smoking content 😊👍💨💨 Take care!
Sounds like a plan
Thank you for this video, I took up the pipe a few years ago… still experimenting but love my beauties from Peterson, Ser Jacopo and Mark Tinsky. I’m found of the burley and dark cavendish blends…..
Love my pipes. Current favourite tobacco is Burberry, by Planta. Chocolate and Pistachio aromas. Curent pipe is an old Marxman 'Morroco'.
That Condor moment … a pipe dream!
I have entered the world of pipes at the age of 69 and am loving all the
Different aspects that you have wonderfully explained. Like you not every day but when I fancy.
In a nut shell, if the politicians tell you to go that way, then do the opposite.😂
I have a Peterson's tankard pipe inherited from my dear father. I'm smoking it while watching this video. I did not know they made their own tobacco. Thx
Smashing video, you ry ol geezer!
Thank u. ❤️
Well said. I agree with everything you said.
I can go a week without nicotine and have no problem at all. I have not found it to be any more addictive than chocolate or pizza. But every time I smoke a pipe I love it.
Excellent video, explains the great joy of pipe smoking to a T.
Excellent video!
Only if there was some alternative habit like this which provided a much needed calm which didn't damage the health.
Drawing, writing, working out, or pretending to be asleep in a room full of people
I enjoy my pipe with fruity flavoured tobaccos and look forward to showing the few mini pipes I have. The best part is relaxing and conversing gently over a bowlful with you 💚💙💜
🚬 hmm no pipe emoji!
I’m interested in knowing what fruity tobacco’s you enjoy smoking if you don’t mind sharing.
Great video I love my pipe's glad to have you as a brother of the briar ❤
Thanks for the video, just starting my journey.
What was the name of the book and author that you mentioned about the tabacco industry.
I decided to give you a "like" as soon as you mentioned Jacques Tati. Aside from that I do like the way you have presented your thoughts.
The nicotine from a cigarette hits different and I don't like it. I use snus every day and it's a pouch with tobacco you put under your upper lip. Very addictive and I find pipesmoking addictive as well. But I enjoy it so I will continue.
Very informative Richard. Thanks for sharing
The vents are to be kept clear of tape. Whole point of the idea. Supposed to keep the smoke cool.
Thanks for making this video. 🤙 I always wanted to go clay pipe hunting in the fields and water ways of the UK
"The lovely Julia"...so sweet, Richard.
This video, much like smoking a pipe was very relaxing. Thank you 🙏🏻
Very nice! Thanks for your video:)
Spot on. Keep preaching!
Over the years I have found that tobacco/nicotine is habitual rather than addictive. But I guess everyone is different. Been smoking more than 40 years on and off but never tried a pipe. Maybe I should 🤔
I remember seeing clay pipes with designs that resembled a ships figurehead. They intrigued me, even though I never smoked.
I seem to remember the 'high' from a pipe of Balkan Sobranie being similar to a mild joint, but I now try to take more care of my health.
Ah yes Balkan Sobranie my go to blend many years ago, but it disappeared from the market sadly .
Gawith Hogarth American blend cherry, is my current go to blend!
I smoke a pipe because I love the taste and aroma from tobacco, plus I like nicotene.
I have smoked my pipes since my mid 20s I’m now 68
I have decided to read that book
