He’s absolutely right. The dregs of British cuisine is compared to the premier of other’s cuisine to give the Brits a bad name. The Japanese equivalent to beans on toast, for example, isn’t some master plate of assorted sushi/sashimi, or a bowl of ramen, or some ridiculously expensive wagyu beef - it’s the sticky white rice and natto plenty of ordinary Japanese people are actually eating. It’s the bowl of plain old miso soup - the sad bowl, the one that hasn’t even had seaweed or tofu added.
I think it comes from the French. The only thing they have over on Britain is the cuisine of the upper echelons - the Brits were busy kicking their ass.

I'll be genuinely disappointed if this isn't a full series (Though, of course, I'd understand). This is absolutely brilliant. Just hanging out in the kitchen, drinking, making something that you genuinely care about and telling stories about how your dad used to do it, or why you do it this way, and just... Making stuff, even if it's as simple as fried beans on plain white bread. I'm sure there's not an endless supply of foods that have as much of a history for you as this, but even just hanging out and making something while rambling at a camera... I mean, you rambling at a camera is half of what got Fact Fiend going.
Also, thanks for giving me a better appreciation of beans on toast and such.

I'll be damned. I enjoyed this way more than I thought. And as an American who had the exact preconceived notions you stated, this was WILDLY educational. I grew up poor, too, so I have an appreciation for food born out of necessity. Beans on toast is in the same exact family as a fried bologna sandwich (made with cheap meat and the cheap, starchy white bread). I tip my hat to you, Karl. You've improved my life.

That reminds me of my favourite dish that our dad used to cook for us when mum was away - eggs and potatoes with mustard sauce :)
It sounds atrocious but I love it and the mustard sauce is the most primitive recipe topped probably only by scrambled eggs.
In the most basic form it's just a water with some salt, a bit of fat, few spoonfuls of mustard and some flour to thicken the sauce. If you want to be fancy you can use a broth as a base, add some spices but that's about it.
Hardboiled eggs, boiled potatoes, sauce and, bam!, you've got yourself a comfort meal :)

hey Karl - regarding the Tesco beans and all products, that are shop's brands for that matter - more often than not those products come from exactly the same factory and are exactly the same product, as the expensive ones. It's usually a part of the aggrement between shops and manufacturers - we sell your product and as a part of payment for that you provide us with your product, branded by us, that we sell cheaper. Just look at the packaging for who has made those - and that's true for A LOT of the self-branded products.
TL:DR - there is a chance, that the expensive Heinz beans are exactly the same as the cheap tesco ones.

On the two notes of things like family recipes and simple dishes that can be made by basically anyone:
I have a family recipe from my late great grandma who got it from her mom who passed when I was 3. Being a family of Swedish immigrants to the USA, well, they had to make a dish to feed 2 kids, and we settled on baked Mac and cheese, which, for anyone wondering uses 0 meat, but is chock full of protein and fat, perfect for feeding growing kids when you're trying to make a living in America. We do have other dishes, like palt, but we did leave that weird fish head thing behind.

My equivalent of this I called ”Farmer's Brown” when I was a kid. I'd buy these super cheap junky TV dinners that were sold multiple for a dollar. A maybe beef, a maybe pork, and a maybe bird, all with a mashed potatoes and veggie side. Crack them open into a large bowl while still frozen, gravy sides and all. Microwave, stir, done.
The name came from the idea that I put a whole farm into a bowl... And it looked the same going in as out.
Nowadays the only surviving TV dinner brand I used to use for it that I can find are $2 each and if the meat to soy ratio shifts any further they may be able to pass them off as a meatless entree.

Kooking with Karl is such a fun concept. I await the Binging with Babish collaboration.

I've been lucky enough to have been quite well off. Beans were always an extra option I never went for.
    I wanna try this now

As a child of Mexican immigrants in the US, I don't get the hate for beans on toast, I grew up eating refried beans on bolio, a crusty french style bread and I loved it, it's still a go to comfort food for me

This reminds me of a meal I did when I had to survive on 15 bucks for two weeks. I would buy four kilos of potato’s for 1,50, a German “jagtwurst” (hunters sausage, basically a really cheap huge sausage) for 5 bucks and the cheapest mayo I could find. So I would love on that, twice a day, for two weeks until the next paycheck arrived and I still occasionally make it as it is strangely comforting.

We normally fry up onions or other things before adding the beans.
