About:
Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the show is set amongst a larger- than-life junkyard playground and is alive with our favourite feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks.
The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year - the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.
The younger ladies are attracted to Rum Tum Tugger but the older ladies...Bustopher Jones.
Haha, maybe that means something. Young people are attracted to sex appeal, older people are attracted to manners and someone who can provide.

Theory: Bustopher Jones was the Jellicle Choice in a former life. He was a starving stray, like most of the tribe, and was reborn to a wealthy owner. So now he represents the promise of a new life to all these younger, hopeful cats and that's why they adore him rather than envy him.

I knew a cat like Bustopher Jones. He was very dignified. If you petted him wrong he would hiss or try to bite and then
lick his fur back into place. It's as if he was telling us "My fur must be just so and so".
My old cat, Mufasa, was the most dignified but gracious and gentle cat I knew. Unlike Jones, though, he was lean (oh, and we were never rich) XD

The musical: Bustopher is a respected figure because he is a cat who is well-fed, and who doesn't go hungry, unlike many of the cats in the Junkyard who probably don't have families to take care of them. They all see Bustopher as a legend, and even Munkustrap obviously respects Bustopher.
The movie: Bustopher is a joke and will most likely be used as a comedic character and will not be sophisticated or respected, and he and Jenny will be reduced to nothing but comedic relief.

The Musical:
Bustopher Jones is considered a smart and respected cat because he has not only one, but several consistent sources of food. For alley cats, or cats belonging to middle class families, he seems like an upper-class businessman, and many cats respect and admire him.
Jennyanydots may seem fat and lazy during the day, she's an extremely hard worker that takes care of not only other cats, but also even mice and cockroaches. She's kind, generous, and if she's strict it's only out of her care for her hosuehold.
The Movie:
Oh? These characters are overweight??? Hmmmmmm we DID need some comic relief!

Unpopular opinion: James Corden was perfect as Bustopher Jones because Bustopher is meant to be an aristocratic fat-cat in the literal sense. And I say this as somebody who hates James Corden with a passion. Having Bustopher scrounge around in bins for food is not just subverting this particular trope but is also a very feline thing to do.
Rebel Wilson meanwhile was miscast as Jennyanydots because Jenny is meant to be a hard working and motherly cat that looks after all the animals, not an unamusing, lazy, fat glutton that munches on CGI anthropomorphic cockroaches.

The actor playing Mistofeeles does not stop to amaze me. He does not look like an actor in the costume playing his role, he IS the cat like it is his true identity and all the cat's manners are natural for him. It is clear that he simply enjoys the role, like he can finally be himself.

Waldo Does Games the sad thing is that James Corden is actually really talented, but this is a terrible part for him. It’s like the people who cast him have never heard him sing before.

Bustopher in the musical: a noble gentleman who is proud of his weight because it shows how important he is, in general a cat that everyone respects and admires.
Bustopher in the film: a glutton who literally eats junk and just wasn't cut because the producers saw an opportunity for comic relief and fat jokes.

Okay one thing: the difference between Bustopher and Grizzabella is that Bustopher didn't reject the Jellicles. He doesn't seem to live with this rowdy pack of alley cats anymore (if he did at first) but he still attends the Jellicle Ball and seems to treat the other cats with respect. Grizzabella on the other hand, rejected the other Jellicles completely to run off to seek fame and fortune, only to return when she fell on hard times. That's why they have trouble accepting her back - not because she left to become the Glamour Cat, but because she rejected their family, only to come back begging for help. Bustopher might be richer than the others, but he's still a Jellicle, so they're proud, not upset. Grizzabella abandoned them, so they take a while to accept her back.
Agreed, like his song implies "He's the cat we all greet as he walks down the street" he's still a very present part of the Jellicle community despite his aristocratic life. As with all of the older cats (Shanks and his trains, Jenny helping different parts of the community) he has his own life to live but still makes time for the others which as you layed out is the difference maker.. in comparison to Griz who seemingly ran away from it all.
But there some cats have home. Actually a lot of cats.

It honestly just occured to me that that's why he's sharing that information. So the other cats know where to go when hunting's hard up. OMG that seriously just makes so much sense. Feral cats do go to places they know they'll get handouts when they want an easy meal or can't find prey. My town is filled with people that feed strays. Damn now I get why he's so respected he's pretty much telling them where their version of food pantries are. 🥺

Everyone talking about how excited Mistoffelees is around Bustopher-as they should-but my heart melts when Munkustap salutes him at 0:49.
Bustopher Jones reminds me of one cat I knew. There was this cute little tortoiseshell tabby girl who’d come around to my house in the evening. I’d give her some kibble thinking she was a stray or something. She kept coming back at around the same time. Almost like clockwork. I noticed she started to put on some weight and I was worried that she was pregnant, but I couldn’t catch her to get her checked out. Then, one day when I was feeding her again in the evening, one of my neighbors was taking a walk and asked me if she was my cat. I said no. Turns out, she’s been making the rounds and mooching food from other people’s houses. The neighbor I mentioned would feed her in the morning, and a couple other houses would also feed her at different times! That same neighbor eventually took her in as their own and she’s still there.
Also, a fat cat is probably quite unusual for the Jellicles. They are alley cats - food wouldn't come consistently, even with the Magical Mr. Mistoffelees.
Loren Daemon Actually, if you look further into it, most of them have owners outside the junkyard. Munkustrap, for example, has a ring on his collar for a leash, meaning his owners take him on walks. Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer openly state quite a few times they have owners ("And the family would say, 'It's that horrible cat!'"). 🙂

He seems like the cat that would walk over to a conversation, sit, and you would swear he was listening and understanding everything.
Someone pointed out that Misto is an adolescent yet he acts like a kitten.
Then someone mentioned that you can point out the kittens because they are all on fours.
What if, an adolescent cat, can go on all fours and two since he is between a kitten and an adult
Makes sense as I believe Quaxo i.e. Mr Mistofffles is supposed to be only a little older than Victoria, who is the eldest of the kittens. So, his attempts at acting all precocious while occasionally falling into kitten habits is understandable.
I don’t think Bombalurina gets why Jennyanydots finds Bustopher so alluring, but she respects them both enough to just go along with it.
Bustopher deserved so much better than he got in the 2019 movie. And the sad part is, James Cordon wasn't even a bad casting choice; if the character had been treated with more respect, he could have nailed it

I often imagine the real-life cats that TS Eliot likely knew who became basis for the felines in his poems , then the characters in this show. For Bustopher Jones, I picture a stately Tuxedo cat who with who would wander through the neighborhood, meowing at backdoors and porches until the residents and/or business proprietors came out to feed him leftovers and share treats with him 'til eventually he grew into a big round chonker of a cat. Yet despite his extra weight, he still carried himself with the grace and dignity of a well bred aristocrat.
Jellylorum was the name of one of TS Eliot's cats.

It's crazy how, after the 2019 tragedy, you can look back on this version and think "Man .... Cats is so dignified!" Yeah, they're hopping and rolling about in leotards and face paint, but the performers still maintain a dignified poise that comes natural to them as dancers but also works in character for the cats. Meanwhile, 2019 was just "How can we make Cats even more uncomfortable to look at??"

The big man himself. I like that he's not the typical pompous rich buffoon, but he's actually a genuinely nice guy. He also has a suit, a monocle, and a cane, which automatically makes him incredibly classy and awesome.
Am I the only one who suspects Bustopher Jones and Mr. Mistoffelees/Quarxo are related, at least in this portrayal? They have very similar coat patterns and Mr. Mistoffelees was oddly attentive to him.

At the Humane Society where I volunteer there was a black and white cat who was quite chubby. His name was Drake but I called him the Bustopher Jones cat.

Most of these guys are actually dubbed. They got the best dancers to do the show and the best singers to dub over the singing, including our beloved Mungo & Rumple
@@LisaMurielBrandt The majority of jemima's part was dubbed over due to jemima having an accent, (her " real " voice can still be heard here and there). Mungojerry and rumpleteazer are actually voiced by the actors, there was a dub recorded (which is credited) but it was not used for whatever reason.
Bustopher Jones is a smart, wise and experienced cat. He is seen as an icon figure by the youger folks, whilst also very well respected by adults and seniors alike.

In the musical, the vibe I got was that Bustopher was the cat who turns up at these clubs and everyone feeds him little bits off their plate, or the cook puts out a saucer of milk and some choice niblets for him, and it's a running joke that he's just as much a member of the clubs as all the humans.

The musical: To the Jellicles, Bustopher Jones is an incredibly successful cat. He's the St. James Street cat, so even though he's (probably) a stray, he goes around to all the posh restaurants and gets the kitchen scraps from the cooks every single day. He has a lot of good, fancy food every day without having to work for it (i.e. he's not a "commonplace mouser"). Essentially, he's the idle rich.
The movie: Ha ha James Corden is wearing a fat suit.

After reading a lot of the comments, I finally had an epiphany. And I've seen this musical live and the 1998 movie quite a few times. It never dawned on me until now, that Munkustrap is introducing Bustopher, Jennyanydots, and Skimbleshanks as cats that have BEEN to the Heavyside Layer, as examples for the kittens and younger Jellicles. "This is what happens when you come back to a different Jellicle life. It's always better." Someone below said Bustopher could have been a starving stray before. Now he has wealthy owners and plenty of food.
"RumTum Tugger", "Macavity" would be songs to introduce cats who interrupt the Ball, so you know who they are. And Gus's song I see is a way for Jellylorum to remind Old Deut that there is another older cat who needs his attention and should be chosen.
I need to know who, *who*, looked at Bustopher Jones and thought "hmmm yes the ideal person to play this character is *James Corden*"
