I love how they got Tugger just...so right?? He maintains his posture and swagger but proudly defers to Old Deut. He stays back there the whole time, keeping his distance but it's very clear that underneath all that he loves his tribe and his leader (who's probably his dad also). He's not the one at the front of the pack, leading the others and being responsible (no no, he'll leave that to Munk) but he's still a leader and he contributes to the song, taking the fun bits where he gets to sing about how much of a player old deut is. The exaggerated yet completely sincere bow is just sooo good. Everything about this is awesome!
I like to think that Tugger knows that if he got closer the kittens might get distracted, and he also knows he usually commands all the attention wherever he is, so he decides to stay back as to not take any respect away from old Deuteronomy.
But notice, when Old Deuteronomy was taken and Munk had no idea what to do, it was Tugger who spoke up and told them what to do to get their leader back.
Is that technically Mr Mistofeles? Since he has the white arm cover and leg covers isn't this technically Quaxo still? They are played by the same actor of course and look pretty much the same/similar. But Quaxo has these arm and leg coverins that Mistofeles lacks. I think I saw somehwere that technicaly Mistofeles only really "appears" at the start of his song in his shiny coat and without the leg or arm coverings and whenever the actor is on screen before that he is a chorus cat named Quaxo.
@@emmakreuk9918 in the west end version, you'd be right, but in the broadway version he is just mistoffelees thoughout. i think (could be wrong) that it was filmed in london, but if you watch carefully, misto/quaxo does seem to do some magic (opens the car boot in jennyanydots' song, senses grizabella and old deut first, etc) so i would put my money on this version being misto the whole way through.

This number is already so cute because of how even the oldest cats are reduced to adoring kittens around Old Deuteronomy, but what really gets me are Munkustrap and Tugger's expressions. They just love their giant family so damn much--Munk shows it more overtly while Tugger is more reserved with his affections, but you can tell how much they mean to each other during their duet. In summary, love is stored in the cat.
But DO notice....Tugger ALSO bows and shows deep respect for his Dad. And when Old Deuteronomy takes his place, it seems like Tugger moved to stand on Dad's other side a bit closer.....he and Munkustrap proudly standing by him as the two eldest sons.
oddly enough, when tugger spots old t, he's looks a lot more enthusiastic to see his father than munkustrap does, probably because munkustrap is the responsible older sibling who's trying to impress old t while tugger is the young sibling just vibing
Love and family really is front and center, the original cast of West End did SUCH a good job defining the subtle dynamics and every cast has carried it on proudly ever since, adding their own spin. I love how it also shines through when Demeter unmasks Macavity. She is the only one who realizes the danger, because she would recognize Macavity anywhere. And the skittishness, distrust and nervosity that made the other cats look at her peculiar sometimes (apart from Bombalurina), saves the day here. She overcomes her fear because she cannot stand by and watch Macavity hurt any of the kittens that flock around the fake Deuteronomy, and jumps on his back. That of course brings later the retaliation as he tries to kidnap her - but here the family reacts instantly. Skittish wreck or not, she's one of the Jellicles now and they won't let Macavity take her. Both Munku and Alonzo are VERY adamant ^^
I love how tugger even despite his huge bravado and hyper sexualized over confidence vows so happily to old deuteronomy, just goes to show how much this cats love and respect him
I also like that, even while praising Old D, he also cheekily reminds Munkustrap that Deutoronomy is nonetheless in decline, and that either he or Munkus by implication will have to step up and take his place eventually. It's an early sign that Rum Tum is more concerned for and focused on the welfare of the tribe than he lets on.
I ADORE that Cats totally plays you for a fool at one point. You see Rum Tum Tugger and think he’s going to be a total disrespectful brat to Old Deuteronomy. Then you hear him be mad impressed at how many mates he had. Or that excited smile and point when Old D’s on the way. And Tugger even gives him a respectful bow. I was just so nicely surprised by that and it made me love Tugger’s character far more.

after seeing the cats movie twice, i must say, with all due respect to dame judy dench, that the way they portrayed old deuteronomy there was like... she is the leader, praise the leader. but now, seeing old deutoronomy here, he is portrayed as a father, who they all adore, and the amount of joy and love in his eyes just sends me..
I completely agree! I'm actually not bothered that they made Old D be played by a woman, I'm more upset that they made Old D so different from how the character is supposed to be. Old D is supposed to be a parent-figure to all the cats, they all adore Deuteronomy, and Deuteronomy loves them. That's how Old D is supposed to be, a cat that guides the other cats, and whom the cats respect, and love at the same time. Old D isn't some god or divine creature to the other cats, Deuteronomy is simply a very wise cat who has their love and respect. And I completely respect their decision to make Old D a woman in the movie, I just wish that they actually kept the character how it's supposed to be.

It's fun to watch Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer up on the car through most of this song. I only just started watching cats in the background and am currently searching for Mungojerrie in different songs. He's great! Drew Varley is totally underrated in this movie.

That small and slight nod of Tugger at 1:36 toward Munkustrap is just so...perfect. He's saying Deuteronomy is old and declining but the slight nod says that the statement is not made to offend. Tugger still holds immense respect for Deuteronomy and defers to him. It's such a small thing but it adds such depth to the moment. In my opinion at least.

I love the moment of tension when Tugger is just standing there posing while all the kittens rush to greet Old D who previously purred around Tugger. And then Old D straightens up and looks at him like "You've got something to say about my decline?" and Tugger just bows and later is the first to come up with a plan to save him.
this song gets me every time, not only are the voices absolutely angelic ensemble, but just the way they respect Old Deuteronomy and react to seeing him just pulls my heart strings every time ❤️
i have a theory that Old D is Munkustraps and Tuggers daddo cause like, look at how similar their manes/fur looks around their heads also i feel like when Tugger and Old D greeted each other they had similar mannerisms. like Tugger bowed extravagantly while Old D made extravagant hand motions like how Tugger would say "Yes, hello, don't worry, your favourite is here."
Well in the official cats the musical page, I read that Munkustrap is Tugger's older brother(I like to believe its true). And with Munkustrap having a few same features with Old Deuteronomy, and as the song says that he might have a lot of wives before (Man, Old D got some skills) I believe your theory might actually be correct
Yeah I've always headcanoned Munk and Tugger as brothers. Like at the end shot, Old D, Tugger and Munk are all on the dais, as if to say they're all sort of the same kind of cat royalty. Like Old D and his two favorite sons.
Munkustrap is like the crown prince and Tugger is the rascal second son that wants the family line to continue as much as possible. He’s just REALLY good at it.

I just wanted to come back to this because this movie was my childhood. But seeing Ken Page brought tears to my eyes. RIP Page, you were our Deuteronomy and you made this musical memorable.
Told my mom Ken had passed away and she responded with "was he old?" HIS NAME WAS OLD DEUTERONOMY, MOTHER. Glad he was able to live a long life doing what he loved RIP Ken 💙
This is such a soothing song. Its beautiful. And I like the oh so subtle shift in the brother's dynamic here. In Tugger's song, he was front and center and Munkustrap was hanging back. In this song, I notice Munkustrap sends Misto to get Dad....then he and Tugger are singing together and then Munk goes to greet their father, but Tugger still shows him deep respect as well from the back with a bow and a smile......and he is standing with his dad and Munk by the throne. And I DO notice how Mr. Mistoffelees was the one to help Old Deuteronomy onto the stage like a good son. I love how Deuteronomy acknowledges each of them specifically. He greets the other cats, but he touches Munkustrap's hands.....he bows to Mistoffelees and then he proudly acknowledges Tugger as well. You can SEE the pride in his eyes. And Munk guides him to the throne. CLEARLY these three are favored.
I swear I was a the brink of tears when I heard this song, those angelic choir voices and the way they reacted when Deuteronomy appeared really tugged at my heartstrings. ^^;
I have two criticisms of the filmed version of Cats: The editing of certain numbers so there are jump cuts and the casting of Sir John Mills, which ultimately led them to not be able to film Growltiger's Last Stand.
Such a highly underrated character is Etcetera!!🥰🥰🥰😍😍 At 2:37 she projects some of the most natural feline gestures that the most affectionate ones display. She points her paw forward and the way she tilts her head in the oh so adorable way and nuzzles the way cats do when they love you and want your attention...she was always a pleasure to watch in any scene I could find her in.

I just love how all the cats praise him and admire him like he's the best father ever, even grandfather, makes you wonder how it would be to be in his shoes. To be someone beloved, respected but not with fear, but admiration and like a parental figure with nothing else than love and care for his cats.
Old Deuteronomy has a grandfather feel to him. And I like the way Skimbleshanks is like a father to most of them. Like the small interaction between him and Mungojerrie at 2:32 I love all the small relationship moments like that you see in the background
I 100% think that Skimble is Rumpleteazer and Mungojerrie’s father or grandfather. There’s just so many cute interactions it’s hard to not think they’re related lol
Some of the small details in this are amazing! Like when Old Deuteronomy comes in, Munkustrap is trying to create a barrier to keep the kittens from crawling over their big dad (which fails but it seems it's all in good heart as they're all smiling and enjoying themselves). All the adults go on their knees like kittens while he climbs the stairs (implying they all respect and love him as much as the kittens and still garner that same happy and protected feeling as they did when they were young) The Implication of touch between the tribe of Jellicles, how Old Deuteronomy and Rum Tugger both share that solace moment of swagger and pride before Rum Tum Tugger gives his bow. It's so well thought out and planned and not to mention the harmony and melodies in this are absolutely stunning. This is gotta be one of my favorite songs as well as my favorite moment in the movie simply because there is so much care put into how the acting is played out.
I really love how all the chaos that might have been going on before basically disappears at this point. Everyone is so calm and gentle because they love their leader so much. Even brothers Munkustrap and Tugger seem to get along so much better here because they’re in agreement about how proud they are of Dad.
what a beautiful entrance for an old beautiful soul. This is the power of music, it can make you feel epic emotions for a character you've never laid eyes on. and then when he appears, it feels you with a warmth. He reminds me of my grandfather so much.

I love it how true all of the cats are portraied. I knew a cat who was the chief of the house and even when he was very old - 21 years, walking very unsteadily after three strokes, the other three cats always let him eat first and took great care of him.
Ken Page's performance as Oogie Boogie is incredible no doubt...but I adore his Old Deuteronomy...He brought such a warmth, charm, and wisdom...he is...he was such a talent. Rest In Peace Ken... Enjoy the Heavy Side Layer.

Awe, at 3:10 Old Deuteronomy wanted RumTum to come in and give him a proper hug. But RT was being "cool" and was like "later dad." But then later, after almost all hope is almost gone and Mr. Magic Mastapholies brings him back, they finally touch/ have their hug they didn't have here. ...I'm starting to realize this play is actually REALLY good.
Idk why but i kinda feel like this is the most elegant and beautiful character entrances of anything I've ever seen. How it's built up to, the music, the way RTT and Munkustrap speak to each other about him. Chills. Really great piece

It's fun to watch Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer up on the car through most of this song. I only just started watching cats in the background and am currently searching for Mungojerrie in different songs. He's great! Drew Varley is totally underrated in this movie.

Of course Tugger, being the hyper sexualized one, would mention Old Deuteronomy's numerous wives, but the way he says it shows pride and respect. You get the feeling Tugger wishes he could be like that underneath that over confidence he displays. That small and slight nod of Tugger at 1:36 toward Munkustrap is just so...perfect. He's saying Deuteronomy is old and declining but the slight nod says that the statement is not made to offend. Tugger still holds immense respect for Deuteronomy and defers to him. It's such a small thing but it adds such depth to the moment. In my opinion at least.

I love the moment of tension when Tugger is just standing there posing while all the kittens rush to greet Old D who previously purred around Tugger. And then Old D straightens up and looks at him like "You've got something to say about my decline?" and Tugger just bows and later is the first to come up with a plan to save him.
I just love the smile Munkustrap gives when he sees Old Deuteronomy arriving at 2:25 ! He just seems so happy and relieved he's there

Well in the official cats the musical page, I read that Munkustrap is Tugger's older brother(I like to believe its true). And with Munkustrap having a few same features with Old Deuteronomy, and as the song says that he might have a lot of wives before (Man, Old D got some skills)

Yeah I've always headcanoned Munk and Tugger as brothers. Like at the end shot, Old D, Tugger and Munk are all on the dais, as if to say they're all sort of the same kind of cat royalty. Like Old D and his two favorite sons.
Munkustrap is like the crown prince and Tugger is the rascal second son that wants the family line to continue as much as possible. He’s just REALLY good at it.

As of the end of September 2024, Old Deuteronomy showing up at the end of the song is bittersweet and chilling to me.
Told my mom Ken had passed away and she responded with "was he old?" HIS NAME WAS OLD DEUTERONOMY, MOTHER. Glad he was able to live a long life doing what he loved RIP Ken 💙

This is such a soothing song. Its beautiful. And I like the oh so subtle shift in the brother's dynamic here. In Tugger's song, he was front and center and Munkustrap was hanging back. In this song, I notice Munkustrap sends Misto to get Dad....then he and Tugger are singing together and then Munk goes to greet their father, but Tugger still shows him deep respect as well from the back with a bow and a smile......and he is standing with his dad and Munk by the throne. And I DO notice how Mr. Mistoffelees was the one to help Old Deuteronomy onto the stage like a good son. I love how Deuteronomy acknowledges each of them specifically. He greets the other cats, but he touches Munkustrap's hands.....he bows to Mistoffelees and then he proudly acknowledges Tugger as well. You can SEE the pride in his eyes. And Munk guides him to the throne. CLEARLY these three are favored.
I swear I was a the brink of tears when I heard this song, those angelic choir voices and the way they reacted when Deuteronomy appeared really tugged at my heartstrings. ^^;

I have two criticisms of the filmed version of Cats: The editing of certain numbers so there are jump cuts and the casting of Sir John Mills, which ultimately led them to not be able to film Growltiger's Last Stand.

Seeing Ken Page reprise this role in 2004 and the audience applauding at his first appearance was phenomenal.
Such a highly underrated character is Etcetera!!🥰🥰🥰😍😍 At 2:37 she projects some of the most natural feline gestures that the most affectionate ones display. She points her paw forward and the way she tilts her head in the oh so adorable way and nuzzles the way cats do when they love you and want your attention...she was always a pleasure to watch in any scene I could find her in.

I just love how all the cats praise him and admire him like he's the best father ever, even grandfather, makes you wonder how it would be to be in his shoes.
To be someone beloved, respected but not with fear, but admiration and like a parental figure with nothing else than love and care for his cats.
Old Deuteronomy has a grandfather feel to him. And I like the way Skimbleshanks is like a father to most of them. Like the small interaction between him and Mungojerrie at 2:32 I love all the small relationship moments like that you see in the background
I 100% think that Skimble is Rumpleteazer and Mungojerrie’s father or grandfather. There’s just so many cute interactions it’s hard to not think they’re related lol
Some of the small details in this are amazing! Like when Old Deuteronomy comes in, Munkustrap is trying to create a barrier to keep the kittens from crawling over their big dad (which fails but it seems it's all in good heart as they're all smiling and enjoying themselves). All the adults go on their knees like kittens while he climbs the stairs (implying they all respect and love him as much as the kittens and still garner that same happy and protected feeling as they did when they were young) The Implication of touch between the tribe of Jellicles, how Old Deuteronomy and Rum Tugger both share that solace moment of swagger and pride before Rum Tum Tugger gives his bow. It's so well thought out and planned and not to mention the harmony and melodies in this are absolutely stunning. This is gotta be one of my favorite songs as well as my favorite moment in the movie simply because there is so much care put into how the acting is played out.

I really love how all the chaos that might have been going on before basically disappears at this point. Everyone is so calm and gentle because they love their leader so much. Even brothers Munkustrap and Tugger seem to get along so much better here because they’re in agreement about how proud they are of Dad.
what a beautiful entrance for an old beautiful soul. This is the power of music, it can make you feel epic emotions for a character you've never laid eyes on. and then when he appears, it feels you with a warmth. He reminds me of my grandfather so much.

I love it how true all of the cats are portraied. I knew a cat who was the chief of the house and even when he was very old - 21 years, walking very unsteadily after three strokes, the other three cats always let him eat first and took great care of him.
