About:
Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the show is set amongst a larger- than-life junkyard playground and is alive with our favourite feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks.
The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year - the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.
See, this just shows why Cats doesn't work in a movie. On stage, the actress removing her coat/fatsuit to reveal a dancing dress underneath is a way of showing the difference between her home life and her cat life. In a film, having her peel her skin off like a banana using CGI from 2004 just looks creepy and weird
Maybe in the movie she could have like.. jumped *into* the fancy outfit or something like that. It'd still be a garbage fire of a scene in a trash film but that would have been one less "what the hell?" from the audience as fat comic relief #2 peels off her flesh. :/
Okay, she definitely didn't peel her skin off. It's like taking off a coat. There was a zipper if you look close enough. There was even the sound effect of the the zipper.

Jennyanydot could've worn actual clothing like some of the other cats. I'm picturing her wearing a ton of crocheted clothing: a cardigan, a beanie, gloves, and a giant scarf. All of this would've reflected Jennyanydots's crocheting ability and teachings. It would've also been a more logical cover for her dance costume.
Even something like a large skirted dress (mid 19th century sort of thing) would be more character accurate and less creepy

One thing that I love about Cats is that while each cat sings about themselves and how they're a valuable member of society to be chosen for the Jellicle Choice, Munkustrap never sings about himself nor considers himself for it at all. It's like that scene in Pirates of the Caribbean where the Pirate Lords all vote for themselves, but Jack votes for Elizabeth. Munkustrap's song is dedicated to Jennyanydots, not him
RaggedyStar in movie each character sings about itself, that part I didn’t like. In this version at least they’re more modest, and someone else is singing about them.
Bbbb Ssss Tugger does his own song but like, that's just Tugger. Jennyanydots isn't really the "sparkly pink vest" "bragging about herself" kind of character lol
Loren Daemon in a new movie there were at least Gus and Mistoffelees who changed the original lyrics from “he” to “I”. Not that it really matters, but I prefer the old version more.
Bbbb Ssss I’m still pretty new to this musical, but I think the scene would have worked better in the movie and played nicely to his more shy attitude if they kept it as someone else (Munkustrap or Tugger) singing about him the whole time and forcing him into the limelight except for maybe after Old Deuteronomy returns.
Yeah tugger sings about himself, but he's very vain, so what do you expect?
well I'm certainly glad this version doesn't make me feel a deep, existential dread as my soul screams at the eldritch horrors within.

I love that you can see hints of Mistos magic throughout the entire show. Even after feeling embarrassed he magically opened the trunk and let Jenny out. And if you watch his hand movements in other numbers you can see him change lighting.

AGREED. I will also never forgive how they VIOLATED poor Bustopher Jones in the other movie. They COMPLETELY misinterpreted his character. Bustopher Jones is dignified.....he's proper.....he's the charming gentleman.....he's HIGHLY respected by the other cats.....he has the monocle and the spats and the rose and he walks with an air of charm and refined manners with his smile and his silver spoon. He eats well because that's what he desires as a proper gentleman (and it also shows that he is clever and resourceful to have multiple sources of food, while living on the streets). THIS Bustopher Jones would not be caught dead swimming through trash and glutting himself.....or HISSING at another cat. lol. And he's PROUD of his size....he's not ashamed of it.
And Tugger as well. I don't think the new guy EVEN BOTHERED to watch John Partridge's performance when preparing for the role.....or he would have seen that Tugger is a feline sex god who ENJOYS flirting and flexing his body at the pretty lady cats. lol I WILL say, Ian McKellan did a very nice job as Gus. That was a sincerely heartfelt performance and I felt it equalled the Gus in this movie. I also liked Jennifer Hudson's Memory. Not as good as Elaine, of course....but she, at least, put emotion into her performance.

There's only cats in the show. Cats dress up as mice and cockroaches (and a train) using stuff from the junkyard they're in. It's a more interesting idea than whatever the film was doing.
They make fun of the rich cats weight(dont remeber his name sorry bad memory) a little but not the same as what they did in the movie

I definitely prefer 98 gumbie cat, she is like a sweet, cute, and strong mother figure to everyone, while the movie made her a dumb comic relief character. And I really hated that they cut Demeter, Bomba, and Jelly's singing part and turn it into a boring solo

He is such a little kitten, a kitten who is brave enough to try to have a bit of spot-light at the start of The Old Gumbie Cat and to call Rum Tum a "Terrible bore". He's my favorite character....
In the behind the scenes, Misto's actor describes him as not being a kitten, but also not being an adult yet. I love seeing the juxtaposition, where at times he'll act very grown up and sophisticated, and yet other times will devolve entirely back into a kitten nature- Bustopher Jones ia a really good example of both sides to this. The actor does such a tremendous job portraying this in a entirely visual nature

Despite Mistoffelees being a tad but embarrassed, I noticed in the background that Jellyorum and Demeter are more kind and motherly while telling him to sit down while Bombulrina seems teasing and rude.
Nah they all look a bit rude... but isn’t Bomba kind of known for being a bit toxic sometimes? I think it makes her into an interesting and likable character.

@@coryman125 I like to think that Bustopher Jones is the inverse of RTT-- where RTT causes the younger cats of the tribe to absolutely lose it over him, Bustopher Jones is more appealing to the older cats (as seen with how Jenny sings Bustopher Jones's song); so that explains how Bomba isn't too attracted to him. Woman's got her eyes on RTT
i love how much demeter is enjoying herself during this song. for most of the musical, she's scared and paranoid because of macavity. here, she seems genuinely happy.
I like the headcanon that demeter and bombalurina are her kids, and jellylorum is her sister, which is why they are also taking part in the song

The movement Munkustrap’s actor uses is brilliant - it’s so graceful yet full of personality.

I watched this tape like a billion times as a kid and I never realized the ones on the side there are supposed to be *kittens* specifically??

You see the "adult" cats being a little more subtle and laid back, while the "kittens" are often jumping around, bouncy, poking fun at the other cats, etc. I've noticed the kittens are usually grouped together separate from the adults, probably to make it easier to identify them
I took it to mean they were playfully mocking him for needing to tell all the cats in attendance about this one hot momma cat he knows. Because it seemed obvious to my young brain that he either loved or had a crush on her.
Wow...they destroyed this song in the film. I've never seen the show, only the movie, but this is leagues better than creepy cockroaches and mice with human faces

Ok but this play has so much wholesome personality, like just the actors in the background waving and pawing at each other for no reason, or when Misto makes a mistake here the camera fucking zooms on mungo n rumple giggling to themselves about it, and when Misto goes to pretend that was totally on purpose the other cats heckin paw at him like 'you doofus'
It's worth pointing that the role lf Mr. Mistofeelees can change from play to play, as he has a very intensive athletic job.
It's quite rare seeing him sing a ton, but you can watch a recording of this same song on TH-cam with him singing it.

@Xantron in the stage show it's always meant to be the cats grabbing scrap from the junkyard and "playing" diferent parts in the songs. That applies to Gumbie Cat and also the dogs in the Pollicle Dogs song

In my mind, the official nominees are: Jennyanydots, Bustopher Jones, Skimbleshanks, Gus the Theatre Cat, and eventually Grizzabella. The rest of the cats with songs about them are just to introduce them to the audience

I love how I can watch this musical over and over again and still discover new things in the background every single time. Like I never noticed before that Jennyanydots and Skimbleshanks wave at each other when she turns around at 3:07, so cute! (Skimbleshanks is so excited throughout this in general, I love it.)

I prefer that theory that Grizzabella is his mother but she abandoned him, so Jennyandydot raised him.

Me and my daughter know this musical from start to finish..every song..every dance. Every character..so when cats came to Dallas in November..we went twice..and of course these are all different actors..they were good..but no one can ever take the place of the original on DVD..vhs..we were oh my god they didnt do this step ..or on my they didnt do this or that. But we had a great time..

hopegirl518 Ashlynn They’re actually teasing Mistoffelees at first because he was expecting Munkustrap to be talking about him. He got embarrassed after Mugojerrie and Rumpleteaser started making fun. Then they’re just joking about Munkustrap’s movements.
The only time they’re mocking Jenny is during the cockroach tattoo bit. You can see Mungojerrie pretending to come after her with a fork at one point.

Man the amount of different styles of dance you need to know for this show astounds me. I have nothing but compliments for every actor who is in a Cats performance
What possessed anyone to believe that Rebel Wilson could EVER play this role? Not only did her performance fail miserably, she's clearly too young to play this character, who comes off as either a middle-aged housewife or an old granny.
And they tried to make Jennyanydots into some kind of comedic relief instead of a motherly house cat
My headcanon for this is that when grizabella left, Jenny and jelly raised munkustrap and tugger, that's why he's a bit of a stickler on the performances and so responsible and is perfect for being the guardian/protector. While tugger became the rebellious little brother. IDK it just makes sense to me
That's a cool idea. I really like how the relationships between the cats isn't spelled out for you so you can kind of imagine your own. I always thought Monkastrap was one of Old Deuteronomy oldest children because he's often seen next to the old man helping him and talking to him in the background. They're also colored very similarly. Also I like to think Jennyanydots and Skimbleshanks are brother and sister because of the sweet way they wave to each other during her song. Even if that's not intended to be interpreted that way, it's a lot of fun to.

It’s just that there’s a long dance segment in the middle that has a part where it seems like the mating section of the Ball, and some of the cats cuddle up to each other in a way that feels kinda seхual, but in a temporary, no-strings-attached way. They’re cats, so obviously they don’t have the same social conventions around seх. If Tugger and Jenny were one of those pairs, I doubt it meant they necessarily struck up a dating relationship. After all, it’s not like the cats even have strict pairings during that part, some who were feeling up one cat would go to another afterwards. And the only cats who really seemed to actually possibly be implied to have interсourse, instead of just temporarily touching and rubbing, were Victoria and Plato, who have an extended dance before exiting offstage.
Hilariously, the fact the other cats donned costumes and learned the dance routine here shows they can do it if they *wanted* to. Then comes the Pekes and the Pollical number and they intentionally(?) screw it up at any possible chance. I think it goes to show that they have a lot of love and admiration for Jennyanydots like the motherly / grandmotherly figure that she is. Then Munkastrap gets the run around and ragged on like the big brother figure that he is. Bunch of brats. 😂

Never seen the musical in full, or in person. Recently got interested in CATS thanks to Sideways' video. And while I can't choose a favorite song, I have to say that Jennyanydots might be my favorite character. Mainly because of how motherly she is, how she's an incredible tap-dancer, and how she's just...inspiring. Seriously, her character is giving me inspiration to continue writing. And I'm glad for that.
Also, besides the tap-dancing routine being incredible, two moments really stick out to me in this. The first is how Rumpleteazer(I hope I spelt her name right), is mocking Jennyanydots at 1:01. Is just tingles with humor. And the other is when Jennyanydots sings "With a purpose in life, and a good deed to do". I could just say her singing is catchy, but catchy isn't the right word to describe it. So I'll just settle for very enjoyable.

My first musical I saw was Cats when I was 7, and I saw it in London's West End! TRUELY MAGICAL! The next day unknown to me, I got to go on a behind the scenes tour with my vacation kids' group and since I saw it the previous day (and MANY MANY times on DVD) the tour guide let me RIDE ON THE TIRE!! Ever since then I've been ADDICTED to Broadway & Musical Theatre!

Of course, CATS really isn't a slapstick musical, is it? Most of the jokes are either conceptual or strangely erudite puns (ex: 'Handel-ing pieces from the "Messiah"')
Not just that, but they took a song whose chorus relies heavily on a three part harmony and turned it into a solo for a woman who can’t sing. Same with Macavity, that song lives and dies on Demeter and Bombarlurina belting out a duet, but nooooOOoOoOoo Taylor Swift couldn’t possibly share the spotlight
