  • In this video I prove once and for all that Splatoon 2 wasn't responsible for killing ARMS. I want more people to actually play this game instead of talking about why no one plays this game.
    I will grass root ARMS. Watch me. HAPPY BIRTHDAY ARMS!

      I think it’s because no esports player wants to play a game that relies on motion controls. Nintendo should have pushed this as a casual game and their other esports series (Smash Brothers and Splatoon) as the competitive esports they are.

      @ItsMeChair1 Arms is not reliant on motion controls, the button controls are much better in my opinion. The fact you think this, is a sign that Nintendo marketed the game very poorly. The game has much more depth than meets the eye and better control than shown off.

      I hope Arms becomes like a mega man thing.
      While Mega Man 1 was very well-received, the sequel is almost universally considered far better on every front. The developers saw potential in the concept the original didn't quite live up to and expanded on the ideas established in the original.
      And Arms, likewise, has great potential! It's a unique concept and it does a lot of things really well already. One of the main complaints people had was that they got bored with it because it didn't have enough content/depth to sink their teeth into long-term.e it didn't have enough content/depth to sink their teeth into long-term.

    It's always weird seeing videos with titles like "do ppl play ARMS in current year?" When i got the game 2023 first thing with my switch and i can count the number of times there were no ppl in the lobbies in party mode on half a hand. Even when i check it out late at night, there's still a bunch of Japanese players up at that time for me to go rounds with lol.
    Sure on ranked, its much less lively but i think its moreso that as with most fighting games, vast majority of the audience isnt looking to git gud and grind. And everyone who does fall under that camp are in too high ranks to be getting matched with brand new players or setting up private matches with friends. Even still, I've found and had good sets from time to time, so it's still got life there.
    It's a real fun game. Ever since 2017 it was my mosted wanted switch game and I'm glad i finally got it alongside my switch. Already have over 100 hrs while I've of course been enjoying other stuff. It's honestly probably Nintendo's coolest IP for me personally, and despite a loud few that like to paint it as a flop, i do see a lot of support for it in response by most comments. Its also surprisingly popular with families i noticed. Looking forward to more on the next system, cause I know Yabuki and co are itching to go back.

      If I'm looking at Nintendo games that came out around launch, we're looking at Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, 1-2-Switch, and ARMS. ARMS was the lowest selling of those pre-established IPs, ontop of being a fighting game which typically sells lower unless you're Smash. Launch probably helped, but at the same time, it doesn't really matter because it.... Still sold. Sales are sales.

    I really love ARMS, I have played 340 hours of it, not that much, but more than many I bet. I have been playing alot recently. I think one of the biggest problems with ARMS was how it was marketed. The ads leaned too much on the motion controls and neither the ads nor the game describes the multiple hidden mechanics of ARMS. There is many features like restanding, ARMS (weapon) weight classes, Arm girth, and mono vs.flurry rushes that are not told or taught through the game. These mechanics (and more) are what adds depth to the game. The internet hasn't helped with this. Most reviews of ARMS say it is a shallow game. There are few sources for good info on ARMS but my personal favorites are ARMS Institute, ARMS study lab, and SNG. We need to bring this game back! Happy 7th Anniversary ARMS!

    the problem wasn't the lack of updates, or the fact splatoon 2 existed, the problem is that it gets boring for most people if they play it for more than a few hours. the problem is that the game just isn't very fun. It's not our fault we dont like the game, it's the game's fault for not being very good.

      That’s a totally fair opinion to have, but I’m not trying to convince you that it’s fun. One thing that I feel did hold ARMS back a bit was the lack of a fleshed-out single player campaign.
    Splatoon's Story Mode helped offer an experience to people not interested in multiplayer gaming while adding onto the game's lore & characters. Arm's characters are really well-designed & charming with their own goals & motives so it's a shame we never got to see that fleshed out (And another reason the graphic novel getting cancelled leaves me bitter).
    Here's hoping Nintendo gives us ARMS 2, and that we get to see more of the world of ARMS.

    • @BrettWils
      @BrettWils  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah I'll drink to that. I think one thing that they mimicked through Splatoon is how the world building is presented in the Sea Scrolls you find in levels? Like, it's cryptic and you really have to care and read through it and dig like a Souls game, but you still have a fun experience to bond with the presented characters to really get into the world. ARMS has an equivalent to those, but it's definitely more tucked away

    People have a wrong interpretation of what a "dead game" is. Just because *you* don't play the game anymore doesn't mean that no one is playing. I haven't touched Smash Ultimate in about a year, but that doesn't mean that nobody is playing Smash Ultimate.

    I used to play ARMS every weekend, even LONG after everyone kept saying it died.
    Loyal players were always there.
    I just stopped playing one weekend because i got into a different game at the time (can't remember what it was). But quitting that one weekend made me miss another, then another, until i just completely forgot it was an option to play.
    Sure enough when i did eventually remember a year+ later, there were still loyal players there to play with. And I'm sure if i kick it on this next weekend: there will still be people to play with.
    It's funny that the elitists who shout "Dead game!" are the only ones who actually owned and played actual dead games. Games now with ZERO players online, because they're games that are considered obsolete because a sequel replaced them. We're talking PS4 games with a massive userbase, STEAM games with its uncountable players: ALL OF THEM COMPLETELY ABANDONING a game.
    Meanwhile, Nintendo games only officially have zero players when Nintendo shuts down servers. Not before then. And with homebrew: not long after. Splatoon 1 was a perfect example of this: even long into the release of Splatoon 3, there were still enough players on Splatoon 1 to get consistent battles. Reason why? Because sequels on Nintendo consoles do not inherently mean "better". They're often just different, which ensure that the older title keeps its value as a game to own.
    So if ARMS ever gets a sequel? I'm sure there'll still be people on the ARMS 1 lobby until its servers are shut down.

    ARMS has a special place in my heart for being such a simple and accessible fighting game when most fighting games require learning not only which character/playstyle you enjoy, but also very complex button combos. I do think the playerbase jumping ship so fast is logical, after all the game lacked much variety and meaningful content. If the game could make a single player mode like Subspace or NASB2's campaign, then I feel like people could have had more reason to stick around.

    I’m not gonna lie, ARMS lacked the nuance and variety that games like smash and Splatoon had, I think that’s what killed it first the broad population of the the fighting game community. There weren’t a lot of moves or options to spice up the gameplay, so many matches ended up looking and feeling the same. I hope the add more possible moves and technical nuance in the future.

    • @BrettWils
      @BrettWils  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Frankly, that’s objectively not true at all, at least in terms of nuance and variety.

    • @savagetomato464
      @savagetomato464 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@BrettWils I’m sure you’re right, but techs buried that deep in the meta alone isn’t enough to fully carry an entire game. Smash has over 80 unique characters that all have their own completely unique moves and weights and entirely different playstyles to master, Splatoon has tons of expansive maps to learn and weapons with different sub and special abilities as well as the aspect of team cooperation and strategy. All arms has is 15 characters who honestly all feel the same to play outside of 1-2 unique moves and 15 maps most of which can be argued to feel samey and unambitious (I’ll give them the variety of ARMS however). Any casual specter that tries to watch a competitive arms tournament won’t see the team strategy of Splatoon, the lighting fast mind games and combos of smash, or the speed techs of Mario kart. The will simply see two people jumping, blocking and throwing punches from far away at each other, it just lacks to technical nuance to be anything more than that. Again, I’m sure it could get its footing if they add more options in the next game.

      Thing is, there is nuance to the game, it’s characters and it’s ARMS. The only thing making people miss that information is the lack of actual clarity on the real stats of everything.
      If there was a statistics dropdown menu akin to Mario Kart, that could fix the preconceptions that everything and everyone is a “reskin.”
      ARMS’ gameplay in general is also very different than a normal fighter. The reason why the fighter’s abilities are all mostly movement based is because its identity is based on movement and positioning.
      High level play tends to be very close up and quick, too. Fighting to corner the other for an easy wailing.

In other fighting games like smash, characters have so many different moves and abilities and meters and frame datas ect that it genuinely changes the way I play with every character, If I played Pikachu for 50 hours that doesn't suddenly mean I'll be any good with bayonetta. In arms, the only thing that matters to the average player is the 1-2 abilities that the char has and if theyre a heavy (mechanica, m brass, mas mummy) or not. Even though I mainly play Helix, I could still pick up any character in the game no matter how little Ive played them and be near equally as skilled as normal. If they just added more options in fights then it could be fixable, even better if they made them player specific, like giving each fighter a unique rush attack, or having each fighter punch in certain patterns (Misango only does hook punches, twintelle only does uppercuts, ect.). But as of right now to non-comp players, the game just feels like wii boxing but you get one random ability depending onj who ur playing, it just needs more man.

    I love this video! You just earned a sub! I’ve always struggled to get into more traditional fighting games, so ARMS was a huge breath of fresh air for me. I bought it a couple years after it came out, and to this day it remains one of my favorite switch exclusives. I was one of the five people popping off for Min Min in Smash, especially since she was my main in the original game!
    All this is to say, your video has sparked my attention. I don’t know what someone like me can do to bring this game the spotlight it deserves, but I’m gonna try. If you ever need some extra manpower, or an enthusiastic voice, please let me know! In the meantime, I’ll be following your journey eagerly!

      Honestly, growing the scene is really simple. We just have to get people playing. Playing with your friends, working with your local Smash/FGC scene to see if they'll let you host an ARMS side event. Getting more people into the game in person is the biggest thing!!

    i love this game so much and try to play it often! its gameplay is really fun to start but challenging to master, and i love how the technical parts come in the form of what arms you use- it feels like customizing your own fighter with your preference of playstyle and i think thats really such a fantastic concept and i love it! (not to mention the amazing character designs and how the game is just FUN!)
    i completely agree though that nintendo didn't abandon this game. so many people flat out just make fun of it for some reason or insist its a flop (it literally outsold the entire xenoblade series btw). people ditched this game and then in typical internet fashion blame nintendo for everything
    regardless i love this game so much and ill always keep playing it! id love if it got a sequel one day, but honestly even then the one game we have is amazing and something i truly cherish!

    I remember buying ARMS when I was a kid back when it came out because of the cool character designs and because I wanted to give my joycons a good use for once, but then after like a couple of days it lost my interest very quickly. It just doesn't have as much to do as Splatoon does, it feels more restrictive with its locked in camera and simple circle stages. Making an experimental new fighting game and then aiming it towards kids was just never gonna work, ARMS was abandoned because people would simply rather play something else.

      @@BrettWils Smash Bros. 64 took the platforming gameplay of classical Mario games and combined it with the popular arcade fighting game gameplay of something like Street Fighter. It was something new, but kids could figure out what makes it fun pretty quickly.
      Of course, we don't live in N64 times anymore. It's clear to see Smash Ultimate needed its gigantic roster of unique fighters and stages, as well as its several game modes to satisfy players of today. 60 dollars for a completely new IP people have no attachment to with relatively little replay value just isn't a good deal anymore when there are SO many games out there to choose instead.

    i really hope we get a sequel next console, this game is just too cool of a concept to only do once. but im not sure what new modes or content they could add exactly without it feeling like a quick side minigame, which seems tough for any fighting game in general. one thing id love is for them to do is embrace the lore, and have an actual campaign to showcase everyone and the world. its lame when the single player is just playing 1v1 matches on existing stages

    I've actually really been meaning and trying to show people that Arms can be a very hype tournament game.
    People dont tend to notice every single thing that happens during a match cuz it just looks like 2 guys punching each other the best they can.
    But the amount of strategy and thinking going on from stage picking, to arm usage is very intricate.
    Having hype commentators that can explain to the viewer whats going on and even translate some of the hype with their own is the best way to show the community that Arms is more than you'd think.

    • @BrettWils
      @BrettWils  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    10:36 I think this is your best point. It is true that Melee had absolutely no support from Nintendo and it still formed a community (though I don't know much about Melee history so I don't know how much time it took for that to happen or to what extent that's true).
    But I think some of the other stuff you say feels like you're defending Nintendo too much. You say that Nintendo gave ARMS the same support as Splatoon 1, but Splatoon was given sequels. That's support, not for the game, but for the franchise. I'm not saying that ARMS should have been given 2 sequels like Splatoon did (mainly because ARMS has existed for less time than Splatoon), but at least one sequel on the same platform like what Nintendo did with Splatoon 3 would show that Nintendo actually cared.
    Games like Melee or TF2 are a miracle, I don't think we should apply that same logic to other games. In my opinion, keeping a game or a franchise alive should always be on the developers, not on the players. Even if the support the developers give to a game is proportional to how many people play it, the players shouldn't feel guilty for quitting the game.

    • @BrettWils
      @BrettWils  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Less so defending Nintendo, and more so accepting the reality of how the company releases things. I feel like something that the two franchises will have in common on the Switch 2 is being able to have a fresh, new start altogether. As it is, Nintendo is pretty keen on getting franchises to an evergreen state on a console. A good example of this is Mario Maker 2 and how they quickly dropped support after Worlds were released. The updates to Splatoon 3 could have realistically been an update to Splatoon 2, but if you have a narrative arc to finish and it’s guaranteed money, may as well make a sequel.
      ARMS in its current state is too evergreen to get anything outside of a larger, more ambitious Switch 2 sequel.
