The Secrets of the Serge Paperface with Ben Carey

  • After his short residency Ben Carey gave a talk at MESS about his time on the ultra-rare Serge Paperface. In this extended 100 minute talk Ben will take you through the Serge both it's functionality, design and history.
    Ben Carey is a Sydney-based saxophonist, composer and technologist with interests in contemporary classical, interactive, improvised and electro-acoustic music. He studied saxophone at the Sydney Conservatorium (2005) and the Conservatoire de Bordeaux (2009), and completed a PhD in interactive music at the University of Technology, Sydney (2016). Ben’s recent research and practice incorporates equal parts composition, performance and the development of musical software systems. Ben has previously lectured in music technology and contemporary music at the University of Technology, Sydney and the University of New South Wales, and has been award scholarships and grants from the Australia Council for the Arts (2008, 2016), the Ian Potter Cultural Trust (2008), the Marten Bequest (2007) and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music (2002-2005).

    So much to learn from this video. I've watched it three times over the last couple of years, and have gained more insight into my Paperface system.

    Fortunately, by the time this one was built, the black epoxy was no longer being applied to the modules. The same cannot be said of my earlier (1973) Serge!

    not much of a sound after 1'43" put into it. not a great ad for serge and any feeling accomplishment. maybe after 100s of hours of tweaking we'll find something useful coming from all the effort.
