    Many have missed what I said at 1:30-1:35.... The first swing counts because I made a "Stroke" at the ball by definition. Therefore the ball is now In Play. There is no penalty for re-teeing the ball when it is In Play and lies in the Teeing Area. I'm now hitting TWO!! 👍

    • @JohnVDenley
      @JohnVDenley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ah-ha, yes that's exactly what I was about to pop into the comments to ask!! LOL
      I am glad I did not create any more shame by asking...
      However, I think it's correct that if I address the ball and accidentally knock the ball off the tee with my club, then that's not counted as a stroke, however, what if I do that and I knock the ball out of the teeing area?? I think this is still "no penalty" because the ball is not "in play" until a player makes a swing "intending to hit the ball off the tee". Interestingly taking a swing and missing the ball completely counts as a stroke and that immediately puts the ball "in play" so after that, if you knock the ball off the tee by accident then it IS a penalty and presumably if you do NOT replace the ball on the tee (given that the ball is now "in play"), then its s 2 stroke penalty like it would be out on the rest of the course??!

      Good shit bro....I've re teed hitting 3 as have many of the ppl I've played with over the yrs. I've done exactly what you did off the initial shot attempt countless times and teed it back up hitting 3...1 stroke penalty...more times than not I had too much swing lube involved thus my 15.4 index.
      Side question....what if you're teeing off and your ball hits an object....tree, ballwash...etc... comes back and rests on the tee box. Same rule still in effect?

    • @g.hacksaw7054

      Yeah cause you intentionally misrepresented it.

    • @JayRobertsGolf
      @JayRobertsGolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JohnVDenley It sounds like you are almost there. If you swing and miss completely, you've made a "stroke" and it counts. The ball is in play and still within the Teeing Area. Since the Rule already allows you to move the ball anywhere within the Teeing Area (even if it's "in play"), there is no penalty for further accidental movement. Furthermore, if you played the ball from it's new location after the accidental movement within the Teeing Area, no penalty for Wrong Place because the Wrong Place would be anyplace outside of the Teeing Area. Hope that helps? Nice scenario 👍

    • @JayRobertsGolf
      @JayRobertsGolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@riptorn8399 I'm very familiar with the too much swing lube issue hahaha.
      Same rule still applies. It doesn't' matter if the ball leaves the Teeing Area and then re-enters. As long as the ball is "in play" and at rest within the Teeing Area, tee it up and hitting 2! I appreciate the comment 👊

    Now that we are aware of this rule, we might think about teeing the ball up about 1 yard behind the tee line. That way, if you nick the ball, it might still stay in the “tee box” and you can re-tee.

      LOL

    • @ra1der5
      @ra1der5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just clarifying; it depends on what you mean by “nick the ball”.
      The definition of a “stroke” says: “A stroke has not been made if the player… Accidentally strikes the ball when making a practice swing or while preparing to make a stroke.”
      So, if you’ve addressed the ball and nicked it during a waggle, but you haven’t actually made a stroke at the ball; well, you might get some ribbing from your “friends”, but you can re-tee and swing away without penalty.

    • @Randsurfer

    I've been playing for 59 years, including in several State and one National tournament, and I never knew you could re-tee the ball as long as it stayed within your original teeing area. But then again, in all those rounds of golf, I can't recall ever seeing a ball stay within the original teeing area. But it was still a cool video.

  • @michaelhaddock8636
    @michaelhaddock8636 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This answers a question that I have wondered about for a while:
    When playing foursomes (alternate shot) if your partner plays an air shot on the tee are you allowed to re-tee the ball to your preferred height before you play your shot? It would seem the answer is 'YES'.
    We sometimes discuss the possibility that where you have a low handicap player partnered with a high handicap player there might be circumstances (a long carry off the tee for example) where the best strategy would be for the high handicap golfer to play a deliberate air shot to allow the low handicap player to then play the tee shot.

    Great video but unfortunately your statement at 1:57 of the video is misleading. You say that “if you fail to get out of the teeing area,”. Some might think the option to re-tee only applies if your ball never left the teeing ground boundary (as demonstrated in the video, great shot btw). But in fact, it does not matter. You might tee off, hit a tree, ricochet backwards and come to rest in your teeing ground. You may still re-tee anywhere in your teeing ground without penalty. I submitted this same scenario to the USGA a few weeks ago and they confirmed the option to re-tee without penalty, anytime your ball comes to rest within the boundary of your teeing ground. Thanks for the video. I have subscribed and look forward to seeing more.

"general area".... can't say I've EVER hit a tee shot and had it remain in the teeing area... I HAVE hit some doozies though... I once purposely laid up to the forward (red) teeing area - "general area" - because I was afraid of a roughly 240 carry over water to a Par-3... hardest hole I've ever played... college golf tournament... Day 1 hit a driver (me = short hitter, early 90s) 250 yds on a rope to 8 feet above the hole on a severely back-to-front sloped green. 4-putted from there for a double. Day 2, got scared of the water, laid up to the red tees, giving me about 160 over water. Chunked next 2 balls into the water before hitting green and 2-putting for a quintuple....

I went through the with the shot, caught it near the bottom edge of the driver face, but overall hit a pretty satisfactory drive.

      Hey Garethb, no issue with hitting a moving ball here. Under 9.1, if the ball at rest begins moving after the player has begun the stroke or the backswing for a stroke and the player goes on to make the stroke, the ball must not be replaced no matter what caused it to move and instead, the player must play the ball from where it comes to rest after the stroke. That is one rule I really didn’t know…and I've seen it happen. Would this also include a player taking a swing and a complete miss? I would think it would, how do you determine if it was intentional ( if the embarrassed player says it was a practice swing ).

    • @JayRobertsGolf
      @JayRobertsGolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it would! If a player makes a stroke at the ball and misses it, the ball is in play but they can still re-tee anywhere in the Teeing Area and they'd be playing their 2nd shot. While it's not included in the definition of "stroke", if they have addressed the ball before beginning their stroke, I think it's safe to say there was intent there unless they stop the swing before reaching the ball, or if unable to stop, deliberately miss the ball.

    Never knew about that one.
    I’ve always found it surprising that Tour pros never seem to take advantage of the “2 club length rule” on par 3’s. They just hit from the tee markers. Those guys are in between clubs all the time. If the yardage from the markers puts you in between say a 7 and an 8 iron, instead of trying to hit a hard 8 iron, just move back until you reach your 7 iron yardage and swing normally.

Most shafts are about 45 inches today right, add maybe another 3 inches for the head and you could potentially move back 96 inches, which is 8 feet or roughly 2.5 yards. I guess after doing the calculations, it doesn’t matter all that much. If you’re 170 yards away and end up pin high or 2.5 yards long or short, rarely will that make a difference.

They just jam the tee in a corner as a way of “maintaining” the tee box (i.e. so people arent hitting from the same spot all the time)…or in a some idiotic attempt to make the hole more “challenging” they just stick it somewhere that you are basically aimed directly into trees. People dont realize the amount of thought that goes into a setting up a course…local course just drop the markers in the ground and go on with their lives (I’m sure theres a little more thought than that, but they clearly care more about the course maintenance than the playability).

      Hey Javier- In stroke play, if someone plays a ball in front of the teeing area, you have a responsibility to inform them that they did to protect the field. They would get 2 strokes and must correct their mistake by playing another ball from within the teeing area. They would be hitting 3. In Match Play, you can choose to ignore it (no penalty to them) OR, you can cancel their shot and have them play another ball within the teeing area. They would still be hitting 1

      If the ball was in the Teeing Area and you swing and miss, the swing would count because a "stroke" by definition has been made. The ball is in play and can be re-teed anywhere inside the Teeing Area if you wanted to.
      If you teed the ball in front of the tee markers (outside the Teeing Area) and you topped it backwards like I did into the Teeing Area, you would get a 2 stroke penalty in stroke play for playing from outside the teeing area. You must then correct your mistake by playing a ball from within the Teeing Area and hitting 3. No penalty for playing from outside the Teeing Area but your Opponent would have the choice to cancel that stroke and make you play again from within the Teeing Area. They would be wise to not cancel and have you play on if you topped it backwards lol

      I made a "stroke" by definition at the ball with the first swing so that counts as 1. No penalty to re-tee. I'm now hitting 2.
      As an interesting point, it doesn't matter if the ball remains in the Teeing Area or leaves and returns to the Teeing Area (example: leaves Teeing Area, hits tree, and comes to rest back in the Teeing Area). All that matters is that the ball is in play in the Teeing Area. When that happens, it can be re-teed without penalty.
