My first set of clubs my Dad bought at a Goodwill thrift store for a song, a complete set of women's Macgregor Tourney blades, and wooden woods (diver, 3W, 5W), 3i-SW). There was a small pasture out back of the house I used as my range. I mowed it with the small tractor we had, then used a push mower to clean up my hitting line and 10yd wide circles to simulate greens at 75, 100, 150 yards. Hitting from the left or right side of the hitting line increased the distance to my "greens" by 20 yards. Hitting driver caused my to go through a barbed wire fence into a "raw" pasture, populated with cattle often and some brush here and there. That is where I learned to hit recovery shots off of all manner of lies. My teacher was my Dad. He had a Fred Couples type swing, effortless and maintained a handicap in single digits. Some of my favorite memories were with Dad, hitting balls at sunset. I was 14 when Dad let me play my first round at a golf course. I shot 91 with three lost balls. Best golf tip Dad ever gave me? Know the distance of every iron with a half swing. That single tip gave me a whole different set of tools, effortlessly. Second best tip? Never try a hero shot, just hit something that finds the short grass. I'm 65 now. It is a great game. Enjoy it with friends and family.
@@tuppens2007 It depends on you, your swing. Usually, it gives you about 1/2 the distance. The ball flight is going to be lower too. Here is the potentially good point. Because a half swing travels less distance from the ground, the golfer potentially can be quite accurate (less to go wrong in a shorter swing). With longer irons, the run out may be longer. Sometimes that can be a good thing. Dispersion of your shots will tighten up with a half swing too. I like a 3 to 6 iron for my get out the super bad rough, trees, etc., for getting the ball back into play. That half swing just pops it up enough to escape and then sets down on the fairway grass and runs a bit. Do a bit of practice with this idea. It can help you, and record in a notebook your distances. Same for full shots on all irons and hybrids or fairway woods. When you KNOW your distances, the scores come down. Also, get a range finder. Don't guess distances to pins. I attack greens on the low side and safe side (more space). I never want to put the ball on the top 1/4 of the green. Downhill putts are not your friend. Good luck.
Im 40 lost the use of my dominant arm in an accident and decided to take up golf 🤣🤣🤣. I have a cheap cheap set of clubs and a sense of humour. This is going to be fun. Thanks for the tips
Went to the driving range today used some tips and was hitting 175 with my 3 wood, not to far but perfectly straight I was so surprised. Thanks@@CoachLockey
Understand you don’t have to try and hit your next shot as far as possible. If you have 300 yards to the hole and obviously cannot reach, split it up into two 150 yard shots with less chance of shanking one into the forest.
Yes, I went golfing for my first time a couple days ago after spending all summer at the range. I quickly realized 3 things: 1. Hitting on grass and different ground angles is tough 2. You do not need to drive it right to the green. I was way more efficient in just popping it into the center of the fairway and going from there. 3. golf is FUN
1. Spend a half hour at the range for every hour on the course. 2. Do not over swing. 3. Do not come up short on putts. 4. Concentrate on developing three ultra reliable clubs and learn how to control distance for each of them. You should not rely on them over the long run, but those reliable clubs will make the game more enjoyable. until you can depend on all 14 clubs. 5. Follow the rules, in particular the rule that affect other groups ahead or behind you. Playing through, divot repair, limited noise, etc. are important issues.
I recommend joining a league. Golf is a social game and it’s a great way to meet new people, play different formats, and you can pick tips up from watching various people play
Been to driving range 3 times now. Really enjoy it. Can see improvements already from the 1st visit. Im happy just being able to hit ball cleen at the moment 😅
Great tips bruh!!! I wished I knew these things when I started. The handicap thing helped me consider the areas of my game to get better…and it also helps me be kinder to myself. LOL
Golf distance : printed myself the little card to practice the irons at the Range. And i have waited too long to take a proper Training Class. Made my foundation the most enjoyable...plus I'm saving on Lost Balls so much, its accounted for already lol
3:15 to 3:55: 👍👍👍👍👍👍 THE biggest difference between people who play slowly and people who don't. And while we're at it: When the path to the next tee goes sideways at about 100 yards short of the green of the hole you are currently on, DON'T leave your bag or trolley or cart at that distance in the freaking middle of the fairway, especially on par 5s. Please leave it to the side you have to continue later anyway.
Don't cheap out when buying a pair of golf shoes. Your feet are important, and you're going to walk a lot of miles. A £20 pair from a sports shop will cause you more pain than you could imagine.
@@CoachLockey I did not. My ball was rather wet. However the group behind us had his ball flirt with the rim for a hole in one. I would have probably jumped in the pond with him Good video btw, it’s cool finding other TH-camrs in Plymouth
Great video! I would also add that you don’t need to play pro v1’s or the most premium golf balls. Pick a golf ball which will better suit your swing speed 👍🏌️♂️
I'm a high handicapper (33.7) and my goals are to try and break 100, then 90, 80. But what I found out is that you have to play every week, if don't play for more than a few weeks my scores go back up again 😂😊
Learn the game from the green to the T , especially from 100 yards in and leave the driver to last as it's the club we hit the least. Light grip pressure, swing within yourself and always video your set up and swing so when you make changes you can see them . 😊
My first set of irons was 23 years old, and I started last year. I just got a new set of Ping irons and WOW!!! what a difference they make. You might not need the latest and greatest but at least have some that have kept up with the technology today. I doubt they design new golf balls for clubs that are 20 to 30 years old.
I am a beginner myself and as someone that grew up playing baseball, I am struggling to train myself to shift my weight to my front leg. Staying on my back leg is causing me to Slice with the driver and Top with my irons. It’s pretty frustrating.
Damn, I'm watching this within hearing distance of my wife in the next room, and you just had to say that I don't need the latest and greatest clubs. I haven't looked at my wife yet, but I can feel the judgment and the eye roll from here... especially since i have a new set of wedges on their way here...😅
Thought they now allow (as of 2020) clubs to be grounded in bunkers (just not directly in front or behind the ball), and allow drops from shoulder height (rather than knee height)?
@@CoachLockeyif you look at 02:19 it looks like you could get relief just to the left of the tree and then a club from there instead of measuring where it doesn’t interfere with your swing to the right and then a club length. It’s the first reference point that matters.
The beginners that I see, especially adults, fail to get to concept of taking a divot. They fat it, and the ground then becomes their enemy. They start a futile career of trying to pick it.
Driver is not the most important club in your bag. You should not use more then 10 to 12 times your driver in a full game. Beginner will do between 100 and 120 shot in a game so its about 10% of your shot. Plus, you can play a whole game without playing your driver at all and probably get better result. You can play a par 5 with a 6 iron and get on the green in regulation. Not a good advice at all for beginner.
Why’d you just glaze over those first few things? “Who tees off first etc” those are questions I’m here for lol. Don’t ask us the questions, tell us the answers! 😂😂
Came in to this knowing nothing about golf trying to learn. Other than a few rules and don’t putt so hard he actually taught nothing just anecdotes of learning 😂
I've been to the course 4 times and could have watched twice as many tips. Here's a tip from a beginner; learn to speak for yourself, not everybody thinks the same way you do, and that's OK.
First and foremost. Repair ball marks on the DAM green. I’m sick of repairing my own plus 6 or 7 others. Second RESPECT the course. Third Control your anger. Today in a trash can I found a Titleist Volkey wedge broken in half. The golfer threw away the entire club. Now I have a 175.00$ wedge head that I will gladly re shaft and grip. Thank You. But don’t let it happen to you. Clubs can be expensive.

Number 1 beginner tip: You’re swinging too hard.🤘
I forget this often, play terribly, then remember it again and play much better
@D2theLEO bro I do that everytime I go I even wrote on my notes for next time. im always playing better after I completely ruined my game
A buddy of my told me remember 80 years old guys play these games this isn’t baseball. I’ve already loss half a dozen balls before the last hole 😂😂
Never, hit it harder
Even Jesus can't hit a one iron so

"Have control of where you put it" this man is speaking life lessons not just golf lessons
As a beginner golf, I tee off wherever looks nicest, usually a bit infront. If hit it into any obstruction i just move my ball to a nicer bit 😅.

Check out USGA rule 12.2 that's considered a penalty. Read 14.3 for proper method of drop ball knee height only.
If your clubs are more than 25 years old then you will struggle to learn
