@@alexojeda9048 He probably means because they were never big in America, and that's the place all bands measure success by. Despite those sales figures (which i find surprising they sold that much actually) they were never a household name here, just a cult following. Personally i found them cheesy and pretentious, they tried way too hard to be like a Pink Floyd type of thing but it came off like a parody.

@FatalPies I love both of them. Transcendence is such a great album. But really you can't compare them. Midnight was a light tenor when Geoff is a baritone singing in a high mix. Add James Labrie in his prime and you have my top three singers--and bands. Though John Arch is a close fourth.

It's gotta be! No, no it's not, it's very different . . . OMG OMG OMG, WHO IS THIIIIIIIIIIS???!!!!" I was very happy I glued my very-blazed ears to that boombox through several other songs (with more than a few other folk close by, doing the same) to finally discover who it was. So exciting! my second year of college, I listened to the complete O:M album everyday, all the way through, at least once. It wasn't new, it'd been out for years, but during high school a friend turned me on to QR, and all their albums up to that point (Empire) were fantastic, but O:M just kept itching my brain. Musically I adored them... Geoff's voice, Chris' lyrics, and Chris n Michael's dueling (and duoing) guitars. I'd never known an act so complete since Prince, and the O:M album had a storyline that still resonated (and still does, today). It broke my heart when the original band split up for assorted reasons, because (as pointed out) they weren't well recognized. I was incredibly disappointed when silent lucidity lost to REM for Grammy's that year because QR so deserved the recognition... they were several sweet deft steps above other heavy metal and hard rock bands, their fans knew it, but more of the world needed to acknowledge it. I'm still heartened to come across the odd Rolling Stone listing that will mark QR or O:M or Geoff as one of the Best Of all Time, and can only hope each time they do, someone else gives them a try.

Not really true. Chris wrote most of Hear In The Now Frontier and it was easily their worst effort at the time. Chris came back for Tribe in 2003 and nothing special came out of those writing sessions either. The magic was gone. He knew it and went on to play for Jerry Cantrell and fly planes.

Thank you for recognizing Geoff Tate and Queensryche, I grew up with them and tried to get other to understand that this type of singing is so rare, so rare that it may never bee heard again in our lifetime. I take nothing away from all the great vocalist such as Freddie Mercury. Geoff had such a depth and richness with so much range that it is only today with technology and social media, people see what I saw 25 years ago.

I don’t know how underrated Geoff was as a singer or Queensryche as a band. I believe they were just a musicians’s band.
They were far too gifted and nuanced for the average fan to understand or appreciate. Those who played an instrument had them on Rushmore...where they belonged.
It’s the ultimate compliment to them when someone says, “I just don’t get it.”

Not really. It's a lovely song but as far as a Tate standout and a song deserving of a vocal analysis - especially compared to many other better Tate performances - it's not all that. This is the popular pick...sorta like people going to Iron Man as a Sabbath must, when there are much better examples from the artist.

@@stevej.1428 beg to differ, it's from the album when his voice reached peak in maturity before he started to lose it and in the song he exibits not only great range, but great control as well and versatility, and a tone power he hadn't shown yet. In these older songs it's pretty much falsetto and head voice, with a few exceptions. Sure the high pitches are impressive, but his voice is so much more than that

I saw him sing Operation:Mindcrime in Portland last winter (2019), in a 700-person venue. He sang to the audience like it was an arena, and it was crazy because he was, like, eight feet from us. The guitar player looked right at me like “Holy s-t I’m playing Operation:Mindcrime onstage!” Dude’s enjoying the good life and Tate nailed the entire album. Chris DG’s highs are sadly missing but his voice is professional as it was when I saw them in 1991 and 2005. He still has that voice!

Everyone automatically jumps to Operation Mindcrime as Queensyche's song writing and recording pinnacle, which is fair, but as far as Tate's vocals are concerned, Rage For Order was his. His range was never better and his ability to emote from softer subtle to scream at the drop of a pin and without a hint of slide that even the best vocalists will use to hit notes properly and on key no matter where it was is unparalleled on RFO.
