For my fifteenth birthday my uncle gave me 3 pounds. I duly went to WH Smith and bought Space Ritual. On a wednesday i had the house to myself. So i would change the normal lounge bulb to a red one. Put Space Ritual on my mono record player. It would be a year before i got my first stereo. Turn it up as loud as it could go and go on a 90 minute journey.... .Mum would come in from work and ask if it had been a quiet evening 😊. Happy memories
The Leeds date on this tour was the first concert I ever attended as a 17 year old. My teenage mind was blown. I was overjoyed to discover that these gigs had been immortalised on Space Ritual. 50 years later I still regard it as the greatest live album I have ever heard, and there has been some tremendous competition during that time!
Same here Steve. I was 16 and the Edinburgh gig was my first ever. Truly life changing. I've been to thousands since then, but if I could ever experience one gig again, that would be it. I need to buy a Blu ray player now!
Got it on saturday and just finished it on all 11 of the discs,it's great to hear all the shows that were recorded and listening to it just shows how good lemmy was in this band, not sure how much a difference the new remix adds to it to be honest, i just take it as a bonus to one of the greatest live albums of the 70s & a personal favourite of mine
I'm actually reading Kris Tait's biog of Hawkwind in the loo the last few days. I loved Hawkwind back in the day. I never listen to them now and I'd never buy this but if you still love 'em I wish you all the best 😉
It is a superb set. If you are familiar with the original album , the differences between the nights is clear - tracks are similar, but veer off in different directions at points. The Locarno version of Brainstorm is utterly ferocious. All the gigs are clear sounding and are a testament to the bands ability to steer so many elements into a coherent structured piece whilst maintaining the element of improvisation. Well done to Vic Maile who captured all this on tape at the time, and well done Cherry Red/Atomhenge, you have done true justice to a magnificent album! Thank you.

I spent almost two months in hospital and the road to recovery has been difficult yet rewarding. I have always had a love of music and my vinyl , cd , and blu ray albums and recordings have helped me out in dark times. After over two years of physiotherapy I want to go back to work. It is gentlemen such as yourself who have brought to a place where I now enjoy life and it is because of your reviews. Your reviews help me get up in the morning , shave , shower , exercise and start the day with positivity 😂 I must find work to be able to afford these beautiful music collections. You are so honest and up front when you review these sets. So I wish to say thank you so much for rekindling my love of music. It has been very therapeutic for me. Space Ritual is coming in the mail. Fantastic review of an amazing release, Phil! I’ve only listened to the surround sound 5.1 mix on the Blu-ray thus far and it’s simply an exhilarating experience. What Stephen W Tayler has achieved here is truly genius. It’s so damn good that I’m ready to listen to it again as soon as it finishes. The segues and transitions between songs really set the stage for this epic Hawkship voyage and it’s never sounded as present and powerful as it does here. WOW!
Great review Phil, I,ve just finished listening to all of it, absolutely amazing mastering job, I was at the Liverpool Stadium show, it was one of my first ever gigs and what an experience that was. My mum had to wash my clothes 3 times to get rid of the "funny smell". I saw the band many times in future years and they always seemed to play Liverpool around Christmas time which was brilliant. Happy Daze.
I was at the Liverpool gig, my ears are still buzzing. In the top 3 of my fave gigs. The band were regulars at the Liverpool Stadium and then after at the Liverpool Empire Theatre. I still have the original live album. 😀😀😀
this album was my 1st hawkwind back in ,76 my fave to this day. as much as i would love to have this box, i have to pass.i have the 2cd remaster which i am good with. i know i would play this box once and thats it. but it does look awesome.

i've got the two cd version and the re mix is superb my only gripe is you don't get the full version of brainstorm you get the wind of change section going into seven by seven but you need space ritual sundown vol 2 for the full version of brainstorm
Great revue a great album...the Sunderland gig is fab...I managed to get to London for the Albert hall gig...`as good as ever...also Arthur Brown was fantastic to....a brilliant evening...best to all
Looking forward to this...I got the 2CD remix of the album today MIND BLOWN! In the first few seconds I could tell the difference, things are brought to the fore that were buried way down in the mix before, especially Nik Turner's sax, it's so much more powerful, high energy, wish i'd bought the box set now!
Got the original double vinyl album from 1973 in mint condition where the sleeve opens completely. At the same time I bought a second copy to play. Here's a interesting fact. Watching a music video show in the early 70's and heard Can The Can by the great Suzi Quatro for the first time. The main riff was magical but I'd heard it before. Immediately grabbed this album and put on ''Orgone Accumulator'' and there, particularly around a transition at 4:11 in and on, is the riff to Can The Can clear as day. Check it out. Love both. Other great live albums: As It Happens by Dr Feelgood; Ricochet by Tangerine Dream; Band Of Gypsys by Jimi Hendrix; Ha! by Killing Joke
I'm looking forward immensely to this and hoping my set comes within the next few days. I have to say I thought the actually packaging of the individual discs would have been more secure and not leave them to get scratched. People have been saying there are tracking issues [jumping] with some and in one case all the discs.
I just got a copy on the strength of this review and it's fantastic! Im actually pleased that there's still some of the murk and grit left in. I was a little worried it might've sounded a bit tooo clean but that's not the case. Locarno gig has great vocals on Born To Go. Listening now...🤟
I ordered it when I read about in july, directly drom Cherry Red. But I forgot that UK is no longer in the EU, so today I had to pay €30 extra to get it released by the custom office in the Netherlands. But I don’t care, this has been my favorite live album for nearly 50 years, it will be the fourth cd version of it that I have, but now it is complete. Hope to receive it next week!
I think you may have been ripped off. You shouldn't have to pay duty on anything cominginto the UK from the EU if it's less than £135. Check it out on Google. hat said, and especially after having listened to all the disks, I'd have been happy to pay a lot more for this collection seeing as Space Ritual is not only my favourite album of all time, it's one of the first live concerts I ever attended (I went to the Blackburn concert as it was the nearest to what was my home town at the time i.e. Burnley).
@@stephenbrown318 No and yes. Up until 150€ (£135) you have to pay ‘btw’ (=VAT). From 150€ up you also have another 17% for “import rights”. But I agree that it is worth the price. Great sound and great to have all nights that were recorded. One of the Sunderland discs didn’t play well, but Cherry Red replaced it so now I can hear that one too.
One of the Best live albums of all time. Got the normal CD edition for years, a turning/touchstone point of reference in rock, psychedelic , progressive, space, cosmic, electronic, trance and science fiction. Space Ritual has never ceased to influence creative music and arts from around the globe since its release. Sad this box set is out of stock almost immediately. My copy arrived on Saturday and I've still not played it all but what I have heard, just as you point out, is absolutely superb, so much less 'busy' and much clearer. Thus far the Sunderland gig is the standout for me. I've ordered two 12 capacity CD cases to hold all the discs from this and those from the 'Days Of The Underground' boxset mainly for convenience but also to protect the discs, I really hate those cardboard sleeves. BTW, the 8th letter of the alphabet (H) is pronounced 'aitch' and not 'haitch' (check your OED) ;-)
As soon as I saw the 10CD + 1DVD set I knew I'd buy it . The album has been my number one go to, ever since I bought the original release, and, as others have said, it's one of, if not the best live album I've ever listened to and I've listened to countless over the last 50 years. My original copy has been played so often over the 50 years I've owned it, that it was great to hear a clean version;; plus, the complete recordings from the three recorded concerts were amazing. I was able to hear most of the differences between the three, and too be honest, I love them all. Amazing achievement. p.s I wish the boxed set was the same size as a 12'' album sleeve, that way it could sit with the rest of my vinyl album collection. Also, the reproduction program is smaller than the original. Apart from those very minor gripes, this is one of the best buys I've made in a long time.
After still being burnt about the 'This is your captain' selling out almost immediately I decided to jump the gun on this one. The booklet is a treat to read through and 3 live shows from the soundboards you can't not as a fan. The remix of this album is quite something. The original album was quite muddy and whilst I like that there's a lot of players doing a lot of things at once so viewing the album from a different angle allows you to hear things you maybe hadn't noticed before. The remix in a way kind of reminds me of the remix of Live Dead by the Grateful Dead (one of my absolute favorite bands). In the remix you could easily tell what each player was playing and it cut through a lot of the psychedelic fog but I think because of that you end up hearing the illusionists rather than the illusion so to speak and I think that rings true with this Space Ritual remix. That being said, even though this remix probably won't be my go to, having a version where you can hear all the instruments has actually improved my appreciation for the original because now as I'm subconsciously aware of who's doing what so overall I'd say it was a success of a remix. Great package overall I'd absolutely recommend it to any fans and even to non fans as Space Ritual is a great jumping on point in Hawkwinds large discography and this set provides you with all the tools to explore it. Thanks Phil. Got my box last week and dead chuffed. Sorry folks but I've got a small gripe. It's a pity about the lack of tour poster artwork as I know a couple of folks that could have lent sed artwork, but my main gripe is the wasted opportunity to include barney bubbles sketches of the stage layout / presentation. My Dad gave me the original 73 release on double vinyl, in a ott fold out sleeve, it's bonkers an I love it , also bought it on remastered cd so I Don't have to mither the vinyl 😂
just got the x2CD set and have ordered the full set - it seems a good buy, although on Lord of Light I prefer hearing more of Lemme's bass than Nick's sax so I prefer the older version (at the moment!) I'll give it another 100 listens to finally decide ;-) can't wait to hear the bluray thanks Phil for these reviews you should be on commission!!!!
I've got an original vinyl version of this! Not in terribly good shape, but still playable (not that I do more than once in a blue moon, really, being brutally honest... But I still love that ridiculous and wonderful cover.
Can anyone help. I've just got the standard double album vinyl 50th anniv edition. It says remastered by Ben Wilson. No mention of Steven Tyler. So is this different from the version reviewed here. Have I got the wrong thing?
One tan of rightous acid and an old cassette tape and 5.1 tirns into 20.1 Unfortunately your mind turns inside out which is a more expensive option than buying this superb edition.
Sorry to be a nay-sayer, but I call shenanigans on the all new "re-mix". The near perfection of the re-mastered version ( Discs 1 + 2 ) , be it CD of DVD-A ( The Special Edition ) , has been ruined. How can you better perfection ? Dave has been turned up to the point of saturation and over-load from the right channel, Nik has been pushed forward, which is very very good, but where on Ert is Lemmy ??? The prime example is the Canned Heat - Fried Hockey Boogie bass solo on Orgone Accumulator. It is turned down so low as to be almost meaningless. Lemmy makes a gaff at 7.05 in, which Vic ( ? ) somehow managed to piece back together on the re-mastered version, but it is interesting to hear on the all new re-mix where the gaff is left in the mix, is all that can be said. The re-mix is interesting for some new sounds bought to the fore, sometimes way way too much " Listen to this folks, I have the sliders to do it ", but overall it is annoying, and you just want "the original" back for the super twangy bass strings and warm familiarity. Toooo much Dave, not enough Lemmy. The shining star of the set is the Sunderland Locarno show, packed full of bloopers and little bass drum, but that just adds to it all ! It is truly amazing, and can be compared to the BBC Radio 1 1972 show in many ways. I can't understand why Upside Down is missing from the Brixton show, it is my fave song ??? Feel free to disagree....

I just feel whoever re-mixed it is not in tune with "the vibe". Even the VCS-3 at the start of Lord of Light has been pushed right down in the mix. I could have done a far superior job. It only wanted Nik turning up 3 notches, but I am sure Dave would disagree mightily !

@@NowSpinningMagazine Good good. All that was needed was Nik, Dik, and Del turning up, like on the BBC Radio 1 set, and it would be worth the dosh, but to mix out poor ol' Lem is unforgivable. Grrrrrrh. I even had to shift the balance control on my amp to turn down Dave. No guesses for who commissioned it all..... Having said that, Nik has been bought out quite a lot. It is Space Ritual minus Lemmy and shouty guitar/"lost in the mix" sounds pushed to the max. 6/10 11/10 for Sunderland Locarno. Lots of strange bass rumbling sounds in the middle of Born To Go though, I cannot understand what it it all is. Perhaps this was the so called "fault" in the master tape ? Some points knocked off to for using almost exclusively screen-grabbed photos from the Urban Guerilla DVD for photos in the booklet. Much better pictures from the Space-Ritual Brixton show can be Googled. Yes, i am hard to please.... LOL
Looks good but the world has gone digital. I don't own a CD player or a Blu Ray player. If it was cheaper i would buy it just because it is a collectors item. But at £100 i think i will pass.

I've got Space Ritual volume 2 on vinyl from a long time ago now that were the other concerts from the same time.
Julian Cope raved about the sound on this, still got my copy, solid addition.
volume 2 has the full un edited version of brainstorm which is only partially restored on the new re mix

had to return mine, jumped on disc 1 of liverpool gig and disc 1 of brixton.. sunderland worked fine however

After still being burnt about the 'This is your captain' selling out almost immediately I decided to jump the gun on this one. The booklet is a treat to read through and 3 live shows from the soundboards you can't not as a fan. The remix of this album is quite something. The original album was quite muddy and whilst I like that there's a lot of players doing a lot of things at once so viewing the album from a different angle allows you to hear things you maybe hadn't noticed before.
The remix in a way kind of reminds me of the remix of Live Dead by the Grateful Dead (one of my absolute favorite bands). In the remix you could easily tell what each player was playing and it cut through a lot of the psychedelic fog but I think because of that you end up hearing the illusionists rather than the illusion so to speak and I think that rings true with this Space Ritual remix. That being said, even though this remix probably won't be my go to, having a version where you can hear all the instruments has actually improved my appreciation for the original because now as I'm subconsciously aware of who's doing what so overall I'd say it was a success of a remix.
Great package overall I'd absolutely recommend it to any fans and even to non fans as Space Ritual is a great jumping on point in Hawkwinds large discography and this set provides you with all the tools to explore it. Great review by the way! Definitely will subscribe!

Thanks Phil. Got my box last week and dead chuffed. Sorry folks but I've got a small gripe. It's a pity about the lack of tour poster artwork as I know a couple of folks that could have lent sed artwork, but my main gripe is the wasted opportunity to include barney bubbles sketches of the stage layout / presentation. Fabulous album and I have the original press. I also decided to shell out and get this on clear vinyl. No regrets, lol
My Dad gave me the original 73 release on double vinyl, in a ott fold out sleeve, it's bonkers an I love it , also bought it on remastered cd so I Don't have to mither the vinyl 😂

just got the x2CD set and have ordered the full set - it seems a good buy, although on Lord of Light I prefer hearing more of Lemme's bass than Nick's sax so I prefer the older version (at the moment!) I'll give it another 100 listens to finally decide ;-) can't wait to hear the bluray thanks Phil for these reviews you should be on commission!!!!

Can anyone help. I've just got the standard double album vinyl 50th anniv edition. It says remastered by Ben Wilson. No mention of Steven Tyler. So is this different from the version reviewed here. Have I got the wrong thing?

This was an amazing album but it was always murky. This sounds like the ultimate Hawkwind.
I have hundreds of cd and albums etc knowing I could never listen too everything in the rest of my lifetime nice place to be

Sorry to be a nay-sayer, but I call shenanigans on the all new "re-mix". The near perfection of the re-mastered version ( Discs 1 + 2 ) , be it CD of DVD-A ( The Special Edition ) ,
has been ruined. How can you better perfection ? Dave has been turned up to the point of saturation and over-load from the right channel, Nik has been pushed forward, which is very very good, but where on Ert is Lemmy ???
The prime example is the Canned Heat - Fried Hockey Boogie bass solo on Orgone Accumulator. It is turned down so low as to be almost meaningless. Lemmy makes a gaff at 7.05 in, which Vic ( ? ) somehow managed to piece back together on the re-mastered version, but it is interesting to hear on the all new re-mix where the gaff is left in the mix,
is all that can be said. The re-mix is interesting for some new sounds bought to the fore, sometimes way way too much " Listen to this folks, I have the sliders to do it ",
but overall it is annoying, and you just want "the original" back for the super twangy bass strings and warm familiarity. Toooo much Dave, not enough Lemmy.
The shining star of the set is the Sunderland Locarno show, packed full of bloopers and little bass drum, but that just adds to it all ! It is truly amazing, and can be compared to the BBC Radio 1 1972 show in many ways.
I can't understand why Upside Down is missing from the Brixton show, it is my fave song ???

@@NowSpinningMagazine I thought you would be annoyed actually ! LOL. It is my fave album of all time, so I am acquainted with every second of it. I just feel whoever re-mixed it is not in tune with "the vibe". Even the VCS-3 at the start of Lord of Light has been pushed right down in the mix. I could have done a far superior job. It only wanted Nik turning up 3 notches, but I am sure Dave would disagree mightily !

@@NowSpinningMagazine Good good. All that was needed was Nik, Dik, and Del turning up, like on the BBC Radio 1 set, and it would be worth the dosh, but to mix out poor ol' Lem is unforgivable. Grrrrrrh. I even had to shift the balance control on my amp to turn down Dave. No guesses for who commissioned it all..... Having said that, Nik has been bought out quite a lot. It is Space Ritual minus Lemmy and shouty guitar/"lost in the mix" sounds pushed to the max. 6/10
11/10 for Sunderland Locarno. Lots of strange bass rumbling sounds in the middle of Born To Go though, I cannot understand what it it all is. Perhaps this was the so called "fault" in the master tape ?

Looks good but the world has gone digital. I don't own a CD player or a Blu Ray player. If it was cheaper i would buy it just because it is a collectors item. But at £100 i think i will pass.
